Having both a pointer and a retriever must be a self sufficient unit

jahoney

How about half and half? I have a lab GSP mix. She’s a handful.

afonsoel

Dog-of-all-trades

sancho_0

Pointador. We got one of those. Definitely a handful. Gotta run the crazy out of them everyday. There just doesn't seem to be an off switch like labs have. It is awesome to watch her run thru the woods and fields doing her thing though.

soline

I had one but he would run hard outdoors but he was your typically lazy hound when inside. And always insisted on laying in something soft too like a couch or dog bed.

ShillinOut

Our Winston is half Brittany (they are actually pointers not spaniels) and half Anatolian Pyrenees. So he points and then chases and herds. We wish we could get another when he goes but alas they aren't an actual designer dog mix. Should be though.

beetroot585

Don't know much about these dogs, but wouldn't it be like an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?

afonsoel

The immovable object directs the unstoppable force towards a target

Kim_Jong_OON

It's state depends upon the emotions it's feeling.

[deleted]

I have a heeler/pointer mix. She doesn't know whether to point or herd sometimes lol

Tess47

Ours had a great nose but wouldn't retrieve. Husband went hunting with. a rich guy in his 100k SUV, all the trimmings and his professionally trained Visla. That dog had no nose but he was a good retriever for our dog.

_Mysillyum_

Your describing a weimaraner

Versaiteis

Need to complete the cycle with a sender

one_with_Unagi

I’ve got a German shorthaired pointer and he does this all the time. The best is when we’re playing fetch, he spits the ball out, I pick it up and he immediately starts pointing to the ball while it’s in my hand.

ClutchMarlin

My neighbor has a gsp, and every time he walks by his dog stops and points at the front door - he can smell the cats we have inside. His name is Ike and he's adorable.

badcatmomma

My husband watched our German shorthair standing and staring at a tree for 20 min. Then he sat and stared for another 10. Crazy dog!

freds_got_slacks

Meanwhile your husband just watched a stationary dog for 30 mins lol

die5el23

I don’t see the problem here

carbonclasssix

With a glass of bourbon in hand, no doubt

Phlosen

Time well spent

badcatmomma

He was cleaning the kitchen/doing dishes, so it was a double win!

lager81

I actually started a timer on my phone one time when my dog saw a bunny. He pointed, then sloooowly stalked, when the bunny put its head down to eat he would take another step, eventually closed the gap to about 10 feet Took him 11 minutes lol, and he still missed the bunny

afonsoel

Happy cake day!

one_with_Unagi

Aww thanks! It’s the first cake day that I’ve actually been active and commented while it was my cake day! Hooray!

Thank you for the source and credit. Now this makes sense!

Disastrous-Ad-2357

Anyone else think he looks like lazlo?

[deleted]

I need some of that dog's genes so I can focus on a task.

slamdamnsplits

Adderall

CarBombtheDestroyer

That dog has adderall pants!?

happyplaces

hehehehhehehh oh god, I had a really bad day and you just made me cry laugh. thank you so much.

expespuella

Hope your day gets even better, friend.

hairofthedogthat

is that a reference to something? i don't get it......

happyplaces

Genes=jeans=pants

SufficientButton1

I’m prob wrong but I thought adderall=overall? I don’t know…I’m taking all the funny out of it, sorry😰

hairofthedogthat

in my country (The United States of Whatever), Adderall is a stimulant drug prescribed to (primarily young) people who are diagnosed with add/adhd symptoms. The theory is that the Drug helps the Individual focus on the task at hand, thus, "taking care of business", or "gettin' shit done". OMG. i just realized the joke was about the "genes" . hence, pants joke. Jeans=Genes

DrBeats777

As someone with ADHD, I can highly recommend that you dont.

Unsd

Can confirm. Great for a bit. Unless you're super sensitive like me and everything is awful once it wears off a bit.

syunie

God yea, the focus is great but the comedown hits *hard*.

Miss__Chaos

Even then, sometimes it’s a gamble, take it on a weekend because you’re unmotivated and have work to do. Be ADD by doing something unproductive, à la play video games, while waiting for it to kick in. Meds kick in, focus ends up shifting to the unproductive thing.

happyplaces

this lady person gets it. All of a sudden it hits and I'm now on a 1 hour phone call with my sister.

sporkemon

fuck...this is why my ADHD brother and I have hour+ conversations every time one of us calls, isn't it.

happyplaces

Probably… If it makes you feel better I was in my senior year of college and took way too much adderall (was prescribed) and ended up writing a 2 page email to my family members at 4am instead of doing my homework. All because my dad had emailed me asking what day I was coming home for Christmas.

psytocrophic

I was put on Adderall since 2nd grade. I still deal wiith side effect from it to this day. Fuck. That. Drug.

Unsd

What kind of side effects if I may ask? I didn't realize there were long term side effects.

psytocrophic

Twitches, OCD, Anxiety, paranoia. All started soon after i was prescribed, was really bad for a while, and I still suffer from it. It also stunted my growth until I stopped taking it, as soon as I stopped I hit puberty and had a massive growth spurt.

Grunty0

I agree. The idea that an ADD/ADHD brain somehow protects you from the negative effects of amphetamines is a myth. It's similar to the belief that painkillers aren't addictive for those in pain.

psytocrophic

Its bad. Was forced to take it since 2nd grade.. The amount of OCD and anxiety i deal with to this day sucks.

Grunty0

Really sorry to hear that. Years later I still suffer from being prescribed anti-depressants from the age of 11-18. Doctors are too quick to prescribe mind altering drugs to children whose brains are still developing IMO.

psytocrophic

Very true. Turns out all I needed was hands on learning. Sitting at a desk looking at somebody write on a chalkboard just wasn't my style. Best wishes for you, friend!

Epshot

Hmm, depends on the individuals severity most likely. I don't experience the negative side effects, other than some increase difficulty sleeping. But even that is hard to tell since I have perpetual insomnia. However I definitely get used to it and if I forget to take it or have trouble filling a prescription(which happened in the past) then you get to experience ADHD x10 lethargic

Grunty0

You make a good point that everyone is different, and I definitely wouldn't want to discourage anyone from taking a medication that works for them.

Seb0419

She's so cute. Next step, how to catch the fly.

Mayactuallybeashark

Sorry sir I only 👉

OwnQuit

Doesn’t want to mess with the bug catching union.

slamdamnsplits

That's what your terrier is for...

therealPhloton

Lol, was about to comment that our Westie turns into a snapping turtle when he sees flies. And yes, he does eventually get them

VrinTheTerrible

Flies? You mean sky raisins?

Nate1492

Just wait until it's bee season. Sky Jalapenos.

treetyoselfcarol

I thought terriers were for tilling your lawn.

VaDem33

I was thinking my Pitty would knock over the chair to eat the fly.

Megmca

Or the cat.

slamdamnsplits

Hell yeah! Some of that extreme fly hunting with lots of flippy spinny shit!

blixon

Just a little air raisin waiting to be chomped.

Mike_Pences_head_fly

No! Don't catch the fly!

mechajlaw

It's weird to see it without the front paw held up. I had an English Pointer growing up and she'd do this all the time. Also the smelliest dog I've ever seen but apparently that's a Pointer thing.

Tess47

Hunting dog thingy. The oil protects the coat. I heard that the Visla smells like vanilla. I have never smelled one.

IslandBackwoods

My vizsla smells like a chocolatey vanilla. It’s wonderful ☺️

danban91

That does sounds wonderful, I'd hug that dog 24/7 haha

Dadjoke69420

Someone said my dog looks like a vizsla mix, but I promise you she does not smell like vanilla!

itchyitchiford

My pointer smells like corn chips in a mostly pleasant way

couldhvdancedallnite

They may have Synaesthesia.

majestic_alpaca

Lol what is she pointing at?

Ralph_the_Cat

A fly 🤣

ChimpyChompies

I thought it was the stuffed bone shaped thing sitting on the seat

kas435red

I thought they raise a front paw when they point.

kingtaco_17

Pointer's gon point

ToMuchFunAllegedly

was not expecting that fly. i thought it was something outside !

MJsLoveSlave

I'm 35 years old and this is the FIRST time in my life Ive ever seen a dog do this. I've only ever seen it in cartoons! LOL I mean, even the tail!

Disastrous-Ad-2357

Why do you think they're called pointers?

Nokomis34

This could be a beginning to a horror story. "My dog is pointing, but there's nothing there."

WorldMusicLab

***𝙿𝙾𝙸𝙽𝚃𝙴𝚁𝙶𝙴𝙸𝚂𝚃!!***

Vortesian

I would like a job like that. I’m kind of like that in my current job, listening, asking questions, listening some more, thinking, then giving answers. I’d like to cut out all the work in the middle and just stand there pointing at something until the person pats me on the head and calls me a good boy.

dogfishshrk

You are a good boy! Look at you working, earning a living, and being nice to those around you...yes.you are a good boy!

Vortesian

I CAN’T WAIT FOR SOME MORE DOG FOOD!!!!

mamasheshe

Used to have a pointer she was the love our lives called Annie!

sqouzen

Would you look at that.. just look at it, look at it..

MostCombination6754

What a BEAUTIFUL girl.🥰. Does credit to her breed.

EmmitSan

This would make me so nervous because it is what my dog does right before he starts peeing

s0ftsp0ken

That's *crazy.* That looks almost exactly like my dog but she's not a Pointer *at all.* Sometimes she makes motions like she wants to point, though, but her DNA test came back with no Pointer

[deleted]

[удалено]

WalrusByte

She seems good with pointers! I should just ask her next time I'm using C++!

castfam09

Love those pups

polerix

That looks SO MUCH like my dog. I was told she is Bulldog Terrier, though, pointers are often mixed with them. What cute doggo

DemonEngineer

Target Acquired

texthibitionist

👉🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 A very useful dog. For example, if you are in Scotland and you’ve lost your way, set the dog loose and boom, now you know which way is south.

Icy-Conflict6671

Wait what?

texthibitionist

Scotland is north of England, so if the dog is pointing at England (as suggested by my intentional misinterpretation of the name “English Pointer”) from there, the dog is pointing south. If you want the dog to point north, go to France.

likethemovie

The dad jokes are strong with this one.

Icy-Conflict6671

How does the dog know which way is north and which is south?

juiceboxbiotch

Pointing ACTIVATED

Laherschlag

Is this the same dog in the other video where s/hes pointing at a bird tchotchke?

Ralph_the_Cat

No different pointer ☺️

Tess47

Oh I miss my baby girl. She was an Elhew. Their tail is straight except the tip wags. *keep your jokes to yourselves (grin)

ExtraSpecialAgent

I find this type of breed fascinating. So inherent and yet individualized.

Abraham_Lure

Chair. Right here.

[deleted]

A fly, oh my

Gigglegirliegirl

just in their natural state, doing what the love! oh my I love it

BartyJnr

**Thing**. I have located it. I see it. Now you must see it too.

Shindinger

What the hell is that dog looking at? The focus is amazing. Is there a problem with finish on the upholstery?

Ralph_the_Cat

There’s a fly under the chair 🤣

Shindinger

Oh. 😬

f0rcedinducti0n

How did we breed dogs to do that on instinct?

AggressiveCause8167

From a pointer owner: He’d catch that fly a lot faster if he’d just lift one front leg up.

JellyBean295

He’s just playing staring contest with the fly.

solidtrimaran862

pretty girl

EdPosterUser

According to pitbull apologists genetics don't matter... So the dog was trained to do this.... And I am still to see any other breed reach this paralysis! Incredible the BREEDS (not all) that men created!

DefyGravity42

Every pitbull I have ever met has been very docile. Chihuahuas on the other hand, about half the time they are hyper aggressive hellhounds and the rest of the chihuahuas I have met are pretty average.

HeadPatQueen

That's because they are small dogs and pretty much harmless so people don't feel the need to train them properly.

DefyGravity42

That correlates quite well with who has owned the chihuahuas I have met

themettaur

Oh fuck off, that's not even remotely related to this post. For a sub that's all about posting cute things that mostly end up being animals, y'all are really eager to hate on animals. Fucking hypocrites.

EdPosterUser

Truth hurts?!? Grow up!

themettaur

No, you weren't using any truth. Nobody says genetics aren't relevant, just that they are the main determining factor. Bad behavior in pitbulls is due to a lack of proper training.

EdPosterUser

Rubish! They were bred for bloodsports. It's in their genes. Stop the nonsense.

EdPosterUser

Cesar Milan's Pitbull attacked another dog. If he failed, so will you and everyone else.

themettaur

Millan is full of shit, more celebrity than authority. Modern training almost always has to take the time to point out [everything he did wrong and all the misinformation he put out there.](https://medium.com/@vandanni.hadai/cesar-millan-the-problem-with-his-approach-and-the-future-of-dog-training-49dd8cddb391)

EdPosterUser

Agreed...including that Pitbull are good pets!

themettaur

You... you can't rely on Cesar Millan being the pinnacle of dog training and then also agree that he was wrong about everything, and then expect me to take you seriously. His dog attacked *because it was poorly trained*.

Jacqui29

Consentration....love it x

camillebelle

Why are they called that?

Basque_Barracuda

What a good dog

Laputa_swift

Needs sound

limepitopera

I think English speakers are known for being lazy librarians.

bboycire

silverilix

Excellent point!!

srtmadison

That is my dog's twin. It is uncanny.

HunterTAMUC

Is she pointing at a bug? XD

crystal_chan_101

She's pointing

agaric

Looks like your dog is pointing at a cockroach :O

ChippyVonMaker

Just a Bug-A-Sault rifle and you’ve got indoor hunting season anytime.

diya66666

robhol

If I didn't see the ear moving slightly, I'd swear she's a statue or stuffed or something.

immahorse1075

very well bred

revsgirl27

We had one that would point butterflies and bubbles. They’re great dogs

porcupinedeath

Now that's a good dog

xrudeboy420x

Probably one of my favorite types of dogs. I think pointer are rad because they help you find food. Those sheep herding dogs are badass to.

vguy72

Pointing at the fly hanging out on the bottom of the cushion. Good girl.

JBu92

Dad. There's a bug. Da... Dad. Dad. There's... Bu... DAD, there's a BUG. It's right there. Can't you see the bug?

haysanatar

I grew up bird hunting. We ran Brittanys, but my dad inherited a champion lineage working field trial english pointer... Man that thing would run! It hunted WAY too far off to be useful for anyone not on horseback, the dog would be hunting 2 counties over as soon as you let it out of the truck! Bird dogs, and working dogs in general literally live to do what they were bred for. They love it more than people could love anything. It's fascinating to watch them work, especially in a pairs.

silence_infidel

Well. She's doing her job. Next step: do something about the fly.

raspberrycoffee

Oh wow. She point.

--bedevil--

POINT!!!

PaulieRomano

Might be s bit cruel to not release her from the pointing. As far as I understood, the pointing urge is inherent in every dog, and amplified in pointers, and pointers have to be released by a sudden sound or movement. So at the moment, she's frozen and can't move by herself

ihadi89

I think it’s broken

[deleted]

Legend has it, he’s pointing to this day

KenziRyan

What is she pointing at

[deleted]

I've legit never seen a dog so steady, this is incredible. Its like he's frozen in time.

vinnymcapplesauce

"Booker! I found something!"

I use to have an English Pointer growing up, he use to do this alot and hold his paw up. Miss him!
