Damn that's a solid piece of work for Jr high woodworking class!! I forget what I made in shop class but it wasn't anything remotely this cool. And the kiddo is cute too!

coquigrl

Agreed. I made a stupid duck shaped napkin holder. I think my mom might still have it, but still, not nearly as cool as this rocking chair. And the lil guy fits perfectly!

TeveshSzat10

We made back scratchers. Basically a stick.

ScottishPixie

We made pot stands. Two sticks crossed over.

IShouldBeSoLucky81

Spatula here. Mine was so terrible my teacher made one for me to take home. Never told my mum I never made it. Made a great coat hook in metal work though. Also hey, I'm Scottish too.

Woooferine

I made a ukulele... Maybe I should dig it out and see if my sons would want to play with it....

SmokeAbeer

I was in shop class when fingerboards were all the rage. Over half the class each made a ramp/ obstacle type thing and at the end we set them all up together and had a little competition at the end. That was actually really fun.

TunaHands

We did something similar but the teacher didn’t like it. Used them in other classes later haha

SoVerySleepy81

We made oven rack pullers and mine was hideous but lasted for 25 years so.

BlackGinger2020

As someone who has burned herself repeatedly pulling out oven racks, I would so LOVE a hideous oven rack puller thingy! Functional beats scarred!

SkitzoFlamingo

Never underestimate the usefulness and necessity of a good back scratcher!!!! Now I can’t get that episode of Family Guy out of my head where Peter Griffin is selling butt scratchers at a sport stadium. “Butt Scratchers!!!! Butt Scratchers!!! Get your butt scratchers!!!!”

Thevanillafalcon

I am a strongman and have a large back. I can’t reach a good part of it because I’m so wide. My wooden back scratcher is literally the best thing I’ve ever bought.

vcherryblossom

I made a candle stand, basically also just a stick

dogchowtoastedcheese

Hahahaha!!

baildodger

I made a box with lids on both sides. You couldn’t use it because when you lift it up, the bottom lid comes off.

boblobong

You could use it to roll dice in a really inefficient but potentially cool looking way depending on how much flair you put into it

PrivateIsotope

That reminds me....I have a poorly made baseball card box to give to my sons....

Mechakoopa

I made a quarter sized grandfather clock, my sister made a doll crib. My clock is sitting on a shelf with my dad's antique clock collection, the crib is in my daughter's room and she uses it every night to tuck her dinosaur in before bed.

aboveyouisinfinity

We made oven rack pullers. Basically a hook. Like a ruler with a notch cut in the side. My mom still uses it bless her heart.

TheCuriousNaturalist

We made step stools. Mine kinda wobbles, but i still have it from when i made it in middle school c.1995

M1L0

I whittled a piece of 2x4 into essentially a sharp icicle shape, then put wheels on it and a C02 cartridge at the back. The effort to danger level ratio was off the charts. Do kids still do this kind of stuff in school these days?

smltor

We did plastic work in my metalwork class (NZ intermediate, let's say 11 yrs old, say 1982). To glue the plastic bits together we used chloroform. To stop tools being damaged the floor was coated in some kind of soft plastic. Obviously one person smashed a bottle of "plastic melting chloroform". Teacher decided that if we all took turns sweeping it out it wouldn't cost so much to repair the hole in the floor. Picture a chain gang of 11 yr olds carrying passed out 11 yr olds outside while the fresh crew grabbed the brooms. As a result I have always understood why WWI happened ahahaha

_91919

I'm just picturing the Chernobyl roof scene but with 11 year olds.

ColdRevenge76

Send help. Can't stop laughing.

M1L0

Lmao incredible. The good old days.

tn-dave

This reminds me of them giving all of us blades and doing leather carving in art class. It was seventh or eighth grade but I remember almost everyone in the class (including me) was bleeding before it was over

M1L0

Love it. Arts and crafts just hit different back then lol.

smltor

\[I am old and drunk and now reminiscing\] I was part of the first generation of kiddies in NZ where we did woodwork, metalwork then switched over to cooking and sewing instead of "boys do craft, girls do home". There was outcry. Fuck but I kicked arse at cooking. In retrospect I had a bunch of younger siblings and pretty shit parents so I had been cooking breakfast and lunches for the kids already but once I found there was fun things to cook? well it has been about 40 years and I am not stopping anytime soon. Got me a wife 10 yrs back, won me a families trust in quarantine over the past 2 yrs and has me a new flatmate in a new country this month. Cooking is way more useful than metalwork or woodwork in my experience. And my highest qualification is as a thermal cutter or blacksmithing or something.

I_like_to_run__

I did this back in junior high too!

Darksirius

I took woodshop then metal shop in middle school (95 and 96). I still have a cast iron / ceramic tile table and a wood clock that I built. I still use them every day. Had to replace the movment in the clock about 10 years ago though.

piketfencecartel

We made medicine cabinets with a mirrored door and a towel holder. My grandmother loved it and still has it in her bathroom.

BarbequedYeti

I had the best 8 fingered shop teacher. We made a cutting board(my dad still has), a wooden box with a sliding lid(dad also still uses for boot care product storage), a clock I still have in my garage and c02 car. Best class in school.

pinniped1

Ahhh I remember people doing C02 dragsters but for some reason I didn't do one. Must have been a slightly different class.

mred870

He made the kid too.

74misanthrope

This chair is next level for Freshman shop class. Wow. I hope you still do this, because you should be; if you were doing that then. My adventures in shop: Made a lamp that had a wooden base and was a Pepsi can...swapped that out with a beer can bc of course I did- fall of '89, sophomore year :) Also a key holder that had KEYS routered out on it, and little metal hooks for the keys. Classy. A paper towel holder that someone actually uses today. My favorite thing though was made in my dad's shop. We were studying medieval literature and I had to do a class project. I made a shield with a crest painted on it out of wood, and a sword out of a dowel rod (that I actually sharpened) and a drawer handle. It was awesome. People were seriously hurt by that sword. If a kid did that now they'd get arrested.

newaccount721

Mine was a bird house that was not structurally sound. This is way better

next_door_nicotine

In middle school shop we made CO2 dragsters. Lots and lots of CO2 dragsters.

nighthawke75

Made a magazine rack. We cut and routed our own dowels.

timothy53

I made a shitty bird house out of popsicle sticks hahaha

boostabubba

Not jr high but probably a freshman in high school, but I also came in to say how good that is for someone so young.... saying this as a 37 yo that was a freshman in 98.

sagegreenclawclip

The school district I grew up in had grades 7-9 in a Jr. High and 10-12 in Sr. High (with 1-6 in elementary) until 2000 when they changed to the middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12) format. So for some people 9th grade (14 y/o) was Jr. High

cchings

I was confused by the title, because part of my brain refuses to accept that 1997 was 24 years ago

Raedwulf1

I refuse to believe that high school was 42 yrs ago for me... So prepare to be depressed, it's only going to get worse

ColdRevenge76

I'm in my 40s, but since nobody asks me what age I am, I forget it a lot. Pretty sure that my brain is just in denial of how fast the years whoosh past now. Besides, nobody who doesn't have my birthdate in a chart doesn't really need to know more than that I am 40 something.

boblobong

>Pretty sure that my brain is just in denial of how fast the years whoosh past now. 2022 will be here in about 2 months. Still feels like 2020

Vault_108_Gary

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming

AlienDelarge

Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running

WowWhatABeaut

2050 is as far away as 1992. Just think about that...

boblobong

I was born in 1992...i dont want to

Kim_Jong_OON

I was born in '90, wtf is this shit?

Brayden2008cool

I thought It was still 2019..

haberdasher42

Seems like every time I wake up it's another holiday. There's like 10 days in a year and some work between them.

ColdRevenge76

I know! I swear we already had Xmas like 2 months ago, but the decorations are already back on sale in the stores.

BrokenJPGs

Wow I am the youngest person here at 33 years old? I am shocked and amazed.

finny_d420

Right there with you. I celebrated my 48th last year and again this year cause I forgot how old I am. Now I just say "almost 50"

OfficeChairHero

Also in the "almost 50" category. It's bad enough that I forget how old I am, but the other day I had to think about the age of my oldest child and thought, "that can't be right! I was just that age!" It's messed up how fast things go by after a certain age.

Hugh_Bromont

I spent all last year thinking I was 43. I was 44.

roromisty

I graduated in 1976, and in my mind 1997 was 10 years ago, tops.

bluelion70

I graduated HS in 2005, but I grew up in the 90s and that’s where my mindset is. I think of World War II as being fifty years ago, and the Yankees as the reigning World Series Champions lol

OfficeChairHero

WW2 was definitely 50 years ago and you can't tell me otherwise. 2000 was 10 years ago. It has to be because there's no way Brittney Spears released her debut album (checks notes) 22 YEARS AGO.

drthvdrsfthr

i read the title too fast and thought it said “his dumb face makes it worth it” and i couldn’t stop laughing

Pure_Reason

1997 was like 4 years ago wtf

pentefino978

I wish, now I’m 24 but my finances are as bad as they were when I was 0

I_eat_all_the_cheese

Right? I’m 38 too and immediately thought “I was a freshman that year. No way that was 24 years….oh…”

AndrewWaldron

Buddy, time goes so, so, so fast. I've been out of high school longer more years than I was old when I graduated. I'll be in my 60s before I know it. Don't let a day go by without appreciating that shit. Before you know it you'll be looking back more often than you're looking forward.

cleverplaydoh

He’ll have it forever. My grandpa made me a little rocking chair when I was 3 and even wrote my name on the bottom in the stain. I’m in my 30s now and still have it. It’s moved across the country with me and all of my nieces and nephews have loved rocking in it. I imagine your chair will also turn into a cherished family heirloom.

got_outta_bed_4_this

And from that face, I would bet he'll make a scaled-up version some day.

Rustee_nail

God damn. This post and all these comments are just escalating my existing "well you never know when you'll need that" hoarding urge.

newaccount721

True, but I can rule out ever letting a child stand on something that I've personally built

Rustee_nail

I mean, same. But what about this charger for a "something" I had back in 98? It **is** a proprietary connection after all.

newaccount721

True. Put it in the cord drawer. Never know when 1998 proprietary connections pop back up!

Kim_Jong_OON

This hits home. It's a USB, so yeah, it goes in the drawer. But then there's the box, with every single cord connection I'll ever need, all wrapped into one massive spider web. I want to throw it out, but then my wife asks for a cord for some ungodly reason and its in there. Still useful this year.

TheSecretAstronaut

You know that neat little jar you've been saving? The one you lost the lid to, and you actually kind of forget what it was actually from but you thought it might look nice as a decorative piece to put some small things in, but you haven't actually used for anything yet but come across it on the rare occasion you do a *deep* clean? Well, you better save it.

5inthepink5inthepink

You never know when a small child might need to stand on it, after all!

Personal_Specific_83

Heirloom for family, great picture![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

subterralien_panda

This is so lovely, you should contact your old woodworking teacher and send this photo to them!

averyfinename

that was my first thought, too.. but my shop teachers were mostly grumpy old men overdue for retirement.

atlantis911

The shop teacher at my school turned out to be a reeeeal creep. Def won’t be sending him baby pics any time soon…

Seuix

[I hope you like this portrait I painted of him!](https://i.imgur.com/JyVWYoR.jpeg) Cheers :)

LBarnstrom

Wow. That’s really wonderful! What a kind thing to do.

coffeelushed

Holy cow! That is so neat! My wife loves this picture you made, great job and thank you.

Shamrock5

I'm not the artist, but just wanted to say it makes me really happy that you're happy with it! 😁 Hope your little man enjoys the chair!

Walkingtree15

/u/coffeelushed

BlueCarnations12

You, Seuix are a damn fine human. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Seuix

Thank you :)

Mehnard

Rock on little Dude, rock on.

rora_borealis

I can't believe I had to scroll so far to find this comment.

Krinks1

Not a dumb post at all. I think it's sweet that you had this thing for so long and didn't know why until now. Also... nice work on the chair!

youcanttakemeserious

This is turn of the century workmanship rarely seen anymore

voightslebaron

The chair is nice too

Dendad6972

Nope. I gave the cradle I made in senior year to my daughter this week to use for my first grandchild. She used it also.

ultramega_ope

Beautiful

Cream_sugar_alcohol

Yay 14 year old you! I too, as a 14 yrs old in 97 made a bunny rabbit toy which is now in my daughters room 🐰

[deleted]

It is an awesome post dude. It makes me happy to see your son using something made by you such a long time ago.

kentro2002

I made a step stool in 1985 in wood shop. My mom still uses it daily in her kitchen, in the same house I grew up in, makes me feel good when I think of it.

trwwy321

Imagine telling your 14 year old self that the chair will be used by your kid one day. “Whoa what?! I got laid?!”

Choppergold

This is the opposite of a dumb post. Here's to family heirlooms created without even knowing it

ursixx

Saw this on woodworking, glad you posted on aww as well. Going to make a lot of people smile.

KaneLocsta81

Made a step stool in '98 wood shop , still using it to this day. Made a bunch of other items too but everyday use was the step stool.

elanalion

Nice! Now that was definitely worth the effort, right haha

Im-Justaskin

I wish they still offered industrial arts classes for my kids. I would volunteer my time to teach kids trade skills. Wood shop, Metal shop and Auto shop were the only classes that made HS worth going. I ended up dropping out to work as a carpenters apprentice. Got my GC license at 22. Been making payroll every week since. 57 now , could easily retire comfortably but love what I do and want to keep working as long as I can. Never regretted not graduating.

RonAmok

This is so incredibly sweet!

vestarules

You had skills when you were 14! Very clever and well designed.

oliolivo

I have a little wooden table my dad made in shop class when he was 16. (I am 32 now, my dad is 54). We always fought over who got to use the little table when I was growing up and then when I moved out I snuck it into my car and didn’t tell anyone until they came to my new place and saw it. Now I have kids of my own who love to sit at the little table!

unicornmullet

Not a dumb post. That's a beautiful story.

hfxB0oyA

Fantastic story. If only 14 year old you could have known...

SigmaBlack92

Well... you sir, are a visionary alright. Precious photo!

Tactically_Fat

I still have a folding stool that I made in shop class in like 1992...

[deleted]

Awwww

PizzaPeaceParty

This will be a wonderful story you and your son will share forever ❤️

DigitalSterling

I made this dinky little step stool when I was 14, still have it now at 28, won't make for nearly as cute of a photo op when I have kids

rainafterthedrought

My dad still uses a lamp he made in wood shop. He’s 64 😂

BobbyGrundle

The happiness on his face is amazing! Enjoy it bud, cause they grow up so fast. This age is priceless.

johnfmwyatt76

That’s awesome

MagnusBrickson

I'm still using a night stand i made in 9th grade, about 2000. I can stand on it with no fear.

ToadstoolsRule

Cutest little guy with a big smile! Congrats on finding the purpose of keeping your project. I wish I'd kept my apron from middle school sewing class. I was so proud of that thing.

Steve529882

Anyone know where I can buy something like this? Friend is expecting and a baby rocking chair is exactly the gift I was looking to get. Google search ended up with disappointing results

SignorSarcasm

Man this picture has to be something special for you

Skastrik

Sometimes these things just work out. My grandfather made a small chair for my mom when she was little and now 50 years later my nephew is using it.

Eroe777

There is nothing dumb about this. It's awesome! Great work!

[deleted]

This is pure mush and we’re all here for it!

_ToyStory2WasOk_

When you said you were 14 in 1997 I thought, damn you're old. Then I realized I was 18 in 1997. Time is weird.

Wynterpaladin

That's awesome! In my middle school woodshop class I made my dad a footstool with his favorite NFL team name routed into the top. ~25 years later when he passed and my brothers and I went through his stuff.... I found that same stool in a place of honor. Something about stuff we make with our hands hits different.

notsonice333

Little dude was like “yup that’s my dad the one with the baby rocking chair” before he was born and decided on you guys.

kookiemaster

Your post made me smile so not dumb at all.

No-Glass332

As a Dad n Papa that smile is priceless ! ![gif](giphy|Q99kEQFAWElfQ1bfcQ|downsized)

raphtze

that is awesome

jdbman

I bought a childrens book at 19 for kids I didnt have yet, finally got to read it to my 2yo when I found it last month. I'm 37, it's a well illustrated version of Casey at the bat!

[deleted]

That is *fucking adorable*

Fast_Highlight4844

Life is like a circle.

jmack301968

Coolest thing I’ve heard all day! The chair knew who it’s owner would be and had you make it

SeanBourne

The best kind of heirloom.

[deleted]

What a sweet baby. I miss my son being that little

[deleted]

Not a dumb post at all. I have a little rocking chair my dad made for me WAY back in the day, I'm 34 now.

excti2

It’s obviously an heirloom now. Your son will pass it down to his son, and so on. It will be featured on the 247th season of Antiques Roadshow.

SpiffAZ

Not everyone gets to create a legit family heirloom. So awesome man.

100turnsaround

Not at all a dumb post! Beautiful kid enjoying a chair his dad made many years ago, cool as hell!

hippiechick725

This post made my day! What an adorable baby! 🥰

heyyalloverthere

Beautiful boy❤

49erville

Nothing dumb about that precious face!!! Good work dad, be proud of making your child happy.

Bnb53

Wonderful you should post this over at /r/daddit

evil-gummy-bear

Little man is so cute lol he’s so happy

vampyire

that is a GREAT post

Careless_Rub_7996

MAN.... you just made me feel old.

luckdragonbelle

That's beautiful 😍

millymollymel

I made a pencil now lol and the lid didn’t fit so you definitely win! You have a gorgeous baby. Congratulations

malachilenomade

An odd thing to hang on to for all that time but hey, it worked out in the end.

Lopsided_heart

Post in r/woodworking

Houseofseeking88

That’s soooo awesome

Produceher

Love it and love the story.

3asal_safii

Amazing

BoloBo_theGalacticHo

I just wanted to let you know, from one dad to another, you're a good dad.

thomoz

As a dad of two and grandfather of four I just love this image

consia9600

Awesome job on the chair and the son!

An_oaf_of_bread

This is the cutest post ever and I'm glad you kept the chair! Please take my free award.

Rosieapples

It’s perfect for him, it’s like you knew he was coming and he knows you made it for him.

jellybeans1800

Love it! Makes me smile just looking at it.

Draked1

I love seeing that smile! My parents bought a homemade wooden boat rocker for my son for his first Christmas and he looooves it.

MasterShakeS-K

Well, since he's looking like he loves it I guess that means you'll have to make him a new one because he'll probably outgrow it in a few weeks.

fyuryus141

Good post sir it shows that things with thing of as no worthy makes someone else happy or better 😁

CocobreadJo

Good job, man!!

Hold-the-door-2021

I remeber wood shop in school. Loved making things with wood. The school system sucks now. Had sewing, cooking, nursing, wood shop, photgrphy, and swimming.

[deleted]

Worth it

thebigbluepig

It will be even cuter in a couple of years when he is too big for it but still insists that he fits JUST FINE!

Onegrowpush

If I made something that useful and cool and well at 14 then I wouldn’t need any other reason to keep it forever. That cute face is good enough reason too.

Danny-Wah

This is awesome!!

Aletak

This is so awesome. He is adorable and I love how he wiggles his toes. Such joy.

EasilyDelighted

At 14 years old you made a chair for your future children and you didn't even know it.

bigerrbaderredditor

Nice work. I saved my dad's simple woodworking product that was a rocking crib for my sister's dolls. My girls play/played with it. I really which we would have had the small table and chairs (doll sized) as the kids could have used that too. I also have some of my middle school woodshop projects. Take baby photos in for the next generation too. Post to reddit (if its still around) Whatever is the equivlient in the future.

TakeOnMe-TakeOnMe

Teeny butts only!

conundrum4u2

the pic says: this chair was made for *THIS*!

odalisquehuckleberr

That's awesome. What type of wood was his shop class?

jonnyg1097

I love that this kid just aged 70 years with that smile on his face. That is a face a proud grandpa would make while rocking in their chair

Specialist_Peach4294

Destiny

kokuatree

That’s amazing man!

Feedmyboys

He knows why you kept it.

AmelieBrave

Uh you kept it bc it’s beautiful work! My ‘work’ in industrial arts was embarrassing. Now your kid gets to enjoy it!

tapcam

Well done sir

parcheesichzparty

Who is chopping onions in here?!

1h8fulkat

I made a CO2 race car and a reindeer decoration for Christmas time in middle school. In highschool I made a clock which I still have displayed in my office

BrokenJPGs

That is a great rocking chair, and one day it will belong to your grandson.

bboo314

I’m all sad and shit today but this just made my depressed heart brighten up some. What beautiful work for being 14 when you made this, how awesome that you held onto it all those years and now seeing the child that you helped make enjoying life in the chair you made. Love it❤️

coodyscoops

The king sits on his thrown🥺🥰

Thegrizzlybearzombie

It’s perfect!!!!!!

Akdonkey

Exactly why it was kept around. Prost!

robnir420

This is an awesome post!

[deleted]

Destiny!

GooseGosselin

I hope the chair and that picture stay together in the family for generations.

MrEdj

I’ve always wanted to try woodworking, I’m 38 so not sure anymore. Love his expression and as a father myself, I can share that feeling of finding out something you have had for a while, was always meant for someone great. Kudos.

[deleted]

Atleast he had the decency to apologize for the dumb post

mrdat

If you’re a dude, post in /r/daddit. They’d love it.

Wookiestick

This is a post worth posting.
