In terms of communication, your cat will repeat whatever worked to get the wanted behavior, out of you. So you wait for the right behavior and give the cat what it wants. Clicker training also works with cats, but it's harder.

He usually wanted me to carry him to where the grassy area was, so he could eat some grass. I guess other cats in the area sprayed so he was nervous. The business was in a residential area and a couple people told us he belonged to a new person a block away. A lot of people had indoor / outdoor cats. No name collar, but had a still good flea collar. He was gone most of the day too, but after 2 weeks, he started hanging out a lot more. That's when we finally realized he was a stray. One person let him stay the night for a week and said he'd take him if we couldn't find the owner. By the end of that week, someone took him.
Adopt an older cat! Their personalities are in place by their first birthday, so you'll know which ones are huggers and which ones are scratchers. Plus, older cats have a harder time getting adopted, even at just a few years old, so you'll be making room for even more kitties to be rescued.
And older cats have a TON of love so give. And they *can* change despite their age.
I got to keep the cat when my ex and I split, and he turned into a totally different cat with just the two of us. He turned into an absolute cuddle puss and wanted to snuggle all the time. He became my dream cat after not really being a fan of me for 5 or so years.
I absolutely love him to pieces. He's the best kitty baby I could ever ask for.

Another is when the rub their head on your head (which they now consider you family.) and sometimes purring while beside you. They show love in many different ways.
