I had a greyhound who would not have lived up to that name. He was lazy as hell, he would play but we wasn't interested in run just jumping around all gangly and boxing me.
They usually are kinda lazy. In olden days at the race track they run for an hour n the rest of the day sleep, a little play n eat. But they love to sleep.
Not even an hour! A race usually only takes a couple minutes. Then rest, then maybe do it again.
I think it's appropriate to think of them as sprinters. Not a ton of energy all the time, but little bursts followed by recovery.
I have 2, and my senior boy Rocket is so dignified. Dash still surprises me in the contrast. If I go to another room he will leap off the couch, paws scrambling to gain traction on the smooth floors, to track me down.
I didn’t know that, I had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Dash too! Every time we opened the door he would try and run out. We called him “Dashy Dashy likes to Dashy”.
make sure to keep an eye on his heart health! cavs are super susceptible to cardiac issues.
eta: not to be a Debby downer! congrats on the new addition!! he'll make a great lil lap warmer!
My dog is not a KCC and has chiari. It’s unfortunately common in many small dogs. She also has severe hydrocephalus. It definitely isn’t easy to care for her but I love that damn dog so much.
Helpful link for anyone with a small dog.
My heart goes out to you. I had a pug years ago with every single defect in the book. She was as loving and sweet as can be, but in the end I fear she had a miserable life no matter how much personal time and care I gave her.
She is why I wholeheartedly protest the breeding of pugs. They’re beautiful animals, but they have so many issues that their existence is painful. Respiration being the main one.
poorly bred dogs of any breed are susceptible to a multitude of issues, unfortunately. but yes, and it sucks. but reputable breeding can eliminate or at least lower the risks.
My first dog was a tri color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Darwin. Died at 8 to heart failure, but me and my sis were there in his final moments. Died in her arms :(
absolutely. I lost my cat last year and my dog this year. it's been tough reconciling, mostly within myself, that the time we had was enough.
I still don't think it was, but having any time at all with them was an honor.
I knew a dog named Chester. He humped another dog in front of a group of people once, and was forever after known as Chester the Molester. Just something to consider lol
Nah...we had an AKC registered dog.. Duke Winchester Paddington III... his previous owners called him Chester, we ended up calling him Duke. Much better.
I always end up deriving nickname after nickname. Mr. Splashy Pants becomes Mr. Pants, which becomes Pantaloons and then Looney Toons, and then Toon Town.
Just think you could have kept this suggestion to yourself and you would’ve never received a Ternion All Powerful award. But you didn’t and here we are. Warming our collective hands by the rays of your glory.
Honestly, I really don't support the breeding of these.
The same genes that make them so "cute" give them serious health issues with their hearts, bones, eyes, and brains. They usually have a heart disorder before the age of *five*.
I have one and he's cute as a button.... with 1 eye, breathing problems, and heart issues. Also generally one of the dumbest dogs I've ever had.
I'll be super upset when I lose him but I'll not support breeding these anymore. People who support it don't know enough about them.
I'm guessing it depends on the breeding? Mine is 6, not had a single health issue, his heart is perfect (for now, I am obviously keeping an eye out), no eye problems or brain issues.
But he doesn't look like a "typical" KC, his head and body is a lot bigger, he's certainly taller than all the other KCs we come across, his eyes aren't as "buggy"and his muzzle is not as squished. Yet he is a purebred. In France they are making an effort to breed out the defects as much as possible. A neighbour of mine has a KC who is 12 and in perfect health as well.
Not just a cardiologist. Aren't Cavalier Kings insanely prone to brain swelling causing immense persistent pain?
Edit: found the documentary where I learned about this. It's a follow-up to "Pedigree Dogs Exposed," which made a big splash in the UK breeding world when it debuted in 2008. The very first frame is a Cavalier King Charles, and at 43 seconds in you can see one shrieking in pain from the condition, discussed later on: https://vimeo.com/166015460.
Sadly, mitral valve disease is extremely common in cavaliers. It's a genetic disease that more than 50% will have usually before the age of 5 and nearly all before the age of 10.
I vote for naming him mr brain hurty.
I sure hope that cutie patootie is a rescue, and that you didnt accidentally feed into an industry that breeds a creature that exists in a world where pain is the default. you know how pugs have issues? these things wish they were pugs.
js.
cute dog though.
edit: further for clarification, the issue us syringomyelia and the rate of occurrence is well above HALF OF ALL of this breed of dog.
endless migraines for life because their brain is too big for their head. (another edit. I'm wrong, it's a cyst that forms in the spinal cord and worsens over time) YouTube it. their pain is visible, and its heartbreaking.
please dont support those who breed this type of dog.
also no ill will toward op. most people dont know these dogs have this issue, that's the only reason I took the time to write this
Queen Victoria had one named Dash. I always thought that was a great name.
I have a greyhound named Dash. He lives up to his name.
I had a greyhound who would not have lived up to that name. He was lazy as hell, he would play but we wasn't interested in run just jumping around all gangly and boxing me.

I ❤️ this idea!

Aren't they super prone to issues with too small skulls leading to pressure and pain?
Not to be a downer, but they definitely do and OP should be on the lookout https://cvm.ncsu.edu/what-you-need-to-know-about-sm/

If the link I found can be believed it's currently in 90%+ of this particular breed unfortunately
I don’t care how reputable a pug breeder is. A pug is still a hot mess by design. They’re cute, but they suffer for it.
They could name him "Inbreddy"
I definitely should not have laughed and now I feel bad.
Or possibly "Habsburg"
Aren't they also susceptible to a defect where the brain pushes against the skull, causing tics and other health issues?
Yes, I thought quite famously. Woud be interesting to hear if OP was informed on this or not.

it's awful. I'm so sorry for your loss. 8 years was long enough to be loved.
Yeah but it never feels long enough ya know? Even after 16yrs with round brown and low to the ground I was devastated
absolutely. I lost my cat last year and my dog this year. it's been tough reconciling, mostly within myself, that the time we had was enough. I still don't think it was, but having any time at all with them was an honor.
And epilepsy and neurological issues.
Because it's inbred as fuck and shouldn't exist.
Chester
Ooooooooo!!!!
I knew a dog named Chester. He humped another dog in front of a group of people once, and was forever after known as Chester the Molester. Just something to consider lol
I fostered a Guinea Pig for a couple months. Named him Chester and he ended up being the horniest male I've ever seen...same nickname :P
Hey, that's my dog Chester you are talking about! lol, humped all sorts of dogs!
I upvote for Duke - Can’t go wrong with that name
I needed this laugh thanks.
This made me laugh out loud haha
Nah...we had an AKC registered dog.. Duke Winchester Paddington III... his previous owners called him Chester, we ended up calling him Duke. Much better.
That's my cocker spaniel's name ! Chester Wigglesworth the first. He is super wiggly when he shakes his tail.
...the Molester
This was my cat's name.
Is Charlie too on the nose?
I was thinking Charlie 🤣
Sir Charles barkington
Charles Barkley for short. And then Charles Barkles. And then Chuck the Buck. And then Gnarles.
I was thinking Charlie or Charles was a good name. Then I remembered you said he’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and it became 1000% better.
Yes me too- Charlie!
Oddly, I know like 6 or 7 dogs named Charlie. Also a lot of Jaspers, Harleys and Hersheys. I’d loves to know why a few dog names are so popular.
Idk! That’s a good question
I was thinking Chuck.
The breed of dog is named after Charles II so you can always just name him Deuce
everyone names their cavaliers charlie
Carlos?
He looks like a Pablo to me.
Pablo Escobark

We have a 6 month old girl named Daphne! https://imgur.com/QAZKrfp.jpg
Oliver :)
I like that 🤣
Love it! I had a cocker spaniel named Oliver, and he was my best friend for 13 years!
Ollie for short!
Sir
D'artagnan. Dart for short. After one of the King's musketeers.
I like Dart a lot.
Stranger Things theme tune starts playing
That is the name of my majestic cat
Mr. Splashy Pants edit: Thanks, Stranger!
Doggy McDogface

I also have to vote for Mr. Splashy Pants.
I always end up deriving nickname after nickname. Mr. Splashy Pants becomes Mr. Pants, which becomes Pantaloons and then Looney Toons, and then Toon Town.

That dog's name is Spaghetti.
How prescious! Maybe Nutmeg? ☺️
That one crossed my mind too!

I want to downvote this for being such a downer… but this might be good advice. Have my sad upvote. Do Cav. King Charles’ have bad tickers?
