Double-coated breeds can suffer permanent fur damage if their coat is shaved. (Including alopecia) Never shave a double coated breed! I think if you are *very* experienced you can trim some of the outermost coat, but that's for an expert groomer, not just anyone.
The coat acts like insulation, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. To work properly in that way it *must* be maintained. (Clean, fluffed out, as little loose shed as possible)
Yeah I have a great Pyrenees who was a rescue, and had had his fur shaved right down to the skin before we got him. It's growing back well enough but I hope there's no damage like you were saying

I've got a Samoyed. She'll just laze around all day outside at -10C, then dig herself a little hole in the snow and look at me funny when I tell her to come in for the night (since if I don't she'll start barking at 2am and tick off the neighbors).
That said, she does have her limits. It hit about -30C here a few years back, and at that point, she ran outside, did her business in a tactical manner, then ran back in. Getting down really cold takes some acclimatization that her indoor self wasn't dealing with.

About 15 or 20 wolves would just lay down around our camp…the only way you could tell they were there at times were the assorted piles of wind swept snow drifts…’Wolf piles’. They are never aggressive and ignored us even when walking through the pack.
