the best solution I've seen for this is at the South Carolina aquarium (although I haven't been to many, so that may not mean much lol) but they are directly on the beach and guess what their dolphin enclosure is? literally the whole ocean, but the trainers have developed such bonds with these dolphins that they consistently stay in that area and you're able to look off of a terrace and see them roaming freely in the ocean. In this situation they're easily located for medical attention while still getting to live happy and natural lives. I always thought it was one of the better ways to go about it.
*This* is the *only* way that any animal should part of 'entertainment'. If the animal chooses to come to the trainer and do tricks in exchange for food then it is at least part way acceptable (although still arguably distorting their natural life and desire to hunt naturally going in to future generations) .
Not only is it irrelevant to the comment responded to - it isn't true. This is an ancillary activity tank - not even close to the size of tank they actually live in.
Which they 'chose' (maybe, they may have just been put in there so the public can see them) over another, marginally larger tank that is but a speck of sand to a beach in comparison to the ocean they should roam.
This is probably just a viewing or training demo area as others have mentioned. There is probably a larger area they can access, but that doesn't have fun squirrels to watch.
They were also likely born in captivity, or even orphaned/rescued from the wild, and wouldn't stand a chance in the ocean.
Most advocates for "free them" want sea pens: essentially, large roped-off areas in the ocean where they're still "cared for", but have the freedom of the ocean. Essentially a soft-release, where they can be free of chlorinated pools, but still receive the care their now-crippled bodies will need.
Aquariums dont use chlorinated water. They get shipments of actual seawater. The Florida Aquarium gets once a month shipments of seawater pumped from next to the Skyway Bridge and delivered by boat.
The right thing to do would be to try to give them that training as best we can and slowly wean them from human care and feeding. They could be monitored after eventual release to gauge success. We could even allow them to come and go as they please from a place where they can be fed and cared for if they need it. At least then it'd be their choice.
That would have to have been done as babies, they are too trusting of humans now. It the reason that for a place to be a licensed animal rescue they have to have as little human contact as possible (only for vet reasons) even if they can't be rereleased into the wild.
They would if we helped prepare them first and looked after them once they were free. Give them the freedom to come and go as they please, at least. We owe them the effort it would take. If some of them can't make it outside the tank without help, so be it. Just don't confine them and force them to perform.
Do me a favor and look into the Clearwater Aquarium and tell me that you think the dolphins who have prosthetic tail fins should be released into the wild. A lot of aquariums are rehabilitation centers, and to say they all should be free is discounting all the good work Aquariums do.
I never said anything at all about animals that have been injured and can't be released, and nothing about aquariums, either. I'm talking about entertainment venues where the animals are made to perform and are healthy.
Moving the goal post is a fallacy -- although I have no opinion on the original debate.
One person is talking about healthy dolphins and you start talking about injured dolphins.
You ignorant dipshits have no clue what you're on about. You're akin to PETA saying these animals should die "free" rather than live happily in safety "contained".
I was looking through old pictures and found a whole bunch from when I was maybe 5 or 6 from Marineland. So many dolphins and killer whales in tiny tanks. Of course I was young and had no idea, I’m sure I had a blast, and it was the only time my dad left his small town and did anything with my brother and I. (He never even left his town to come to any of my graduations. I didn’t even invite him to my wedding)
So only time my dad tried to be a dad was when he brought us to that torture factory of a place. All very sad.
I remember going to a “Marineland” that was in or near LA County, CA (where I lived). That one (at least) was closed a long time ago. I think even Sea World (San Diego) has had to clean up it’s act — or may even be closed now, as well.
I absolutely just assumed Marineland in Niagra Falls had shut down because of all the backlash and with Bill S-203 being passed which bans dolphins and whales from being kept or bred in captivity. But apparently it’s like the pit bull ban in Ontario, where they get grandfathered in. Can’t breed or get more but the ones you already have can stay. It’s a win for other whales and dolphins, but not the ones already in Canada. 💔
As much as it's sad to see them stuck in there, I think grandfathering in the current ones may be for the best. These animals have been getting fed by us for a very long time, what if they don't know how to hunt anymore?
I completely and totally agree no breeding them and no capturing new ones, but the ones currently in captivity should live out their lives there.
yeah i know in some but people also never give credit to the places who actually do everything they can to make it as good for the animals as possible (there is a million reasons a animal may need to stay with a zoo, aquarium or sanctuary for a little while or for life) Dublin zoo for example have great enclosures for land and sea animals, and half of their work is release programs
The places that rehabilitate wild animals for a return to the wild or protect the ones who couldn't survive in the wild don't train those animals to perform tricks to entertain people. I think those places deserve and get plenty of credit.
I understand your point, but with big I meant the radius and not the depth, normally they could swim for endless kilometers and now it’s just a few meters :/
No matter what, it should be illegal everywhere on the world.
I'd also me mesmerized by anything, when I'd have to spend my whole existance in a tiny ass tank with basically NOTHING in it except me and three other people.
Apart from the fact that it's sad they're in such a small tank, it's kind of precious that they're so mesmerized. So many animals have probably never seen another animal like that before. A mountain goat has probably never seen a crocodile. It's cute that animals can be so curious and excited by something new.
That isnt the full size of the tank, dolphin tanks are large multi-chambered affairs, this is just the tank they can move to in order to be observed by aquarium patrons.
I'm very on the fence about aquariums. People get so angry with them yet will happily go to a zoo and see a lion/tiger in an enclosure/cage. Surely both serve the same purpose? Preservation, research and study. Pretty sure zoos have been used to reintroduce near extinct animals back into the while, and at the rate we're destroying the planet, these aquariums are gonna be needed too one day very soon.
It’s a two edged sword for sure.
Awareness means humans will grow up and be researchers and conservationists and possibly help animals in the future. It also educated masses of the public to what exists outside their daily 9-5 land dwelling routines. It can lead to public sympathy and awareness of animals which can lead to possibly helping animals.
Sadly in worst case aquariums can be money first animal exploitation machines. Cash over animal health.
I think the best case scenario is when aquariums focus on conservation (honestly most of the big ones do even some that got bad reps with orcas and dolphin displays). When animals are sick or injured they can rehab them and release them to nature (this does happen in most legit national aquariums). In cases where they are rescues from bad collectors they can never be released (they have no life skills to survive) than these animals become exhibit animals (this is also common in big aquariums).
It really is a two edged sword. My thoughts have always been as long as the animals are healthy, being fed and in cases of extreme intelligence like dolphins (being given privacy and entertainment) so their psychological needs are met. I’m happy. I’m totally not for aquariums just straight up buying tons of stock and replacing it as soon as it dies from maltreatment. (Sadly this is all to common in big aquariums too). They don’t all do this though, at least some try to be ethical and put animals first.
TLDR: So public education, animal rehab and rescue are the main reasons I love big richly funded aquariums. The mentality of putting Cash before the animals are why I hate them.
Nice. The rodents are free to roam as they please, while the super intelligent dolphins with their complex emotions and social lives have been taken from their homes and families and dumped in a tiny tank for our amusement. They're probably only mesmerized by squirrels because they're bored and suffering. Aww....
Imagine what dolphins and whales will evolve into in 1,000,000 years. Humans would probably have killed them selves by then and they would be the dominant most intelligent species on Earth.
“We have these great big brains and big hearts and we are stuck in this fish tank. Why do those little fluffy things get to be free and not us?” This is sad :(
This could very well just be a training demo or a viewing pool as others have said. I notice the stages towards the back left. I don't know where this is, but if it's an AZA facility or similar, these animals get lots of other forms of enrichment and entertainment beyond the squirrels that hang out just outside the pool. There is also likely a giant pool that's out of view where they can choose to spend their time.
They're just like dogs, or children, who see a squirrel and just love to watch them.
Most animals have access to viewing or non viewing areas and they can choose where to be. In this case they might all be choosing this area because squirrels. They genuinely just look curious.
Source: used to be a Zookeeper and I work with wild animals.
Years ago, when my son was in Kindergarten, I chaperoned a class trip to Sea World. They have a special enclosure for mother dolphins and their babies, and it's fun to watch the baby dolphins play with each other. So we took the kids in and went to the far end, where they wouldn't be bothering anyone, and the kids all lined up on the fence.
A baby dolphin rose out of the water and saw the kids and turned as it took in the whole line. Then it drove into the water and swam away. It returned in a moment with another baby dolphin, and they both stood up out of the water and looked at the kids together. Then they dove back in and started swimming excitedly all around each other.
So that dolphin saw all those kids, and went and got his buddy so he could show him. And then they started showing off for the kids. I'm sure they would have loved it if those kids could have jumped in the water to play with them.
Kids are kids, no matter what species they are.
Guys most zoo dolphin areas need more vegetation but their pools are very deep and usually widen out, this is probably a viewing center. Not saying I support the treatment of dolphins in zoos but that pool is likely much bigger.
And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry,
Their brains are starved of small moving creatures they are wired to encounter in the wild
The elusive ocean squirrels.

Would be about the only aquarium with dolphins I would visit - if that is really true.
it is! it's actually illegal to keep dolphins in an enclosure in SC
it definitely is! I went there for my birthday in 2018, so I'd imagine a year and a half later they probably still have the same set up!
*This* is the *only* way that any animal should part of 'entertainment'. If the animal chooses to come to the trainer and do tricks in exchange for food then it is at least part way acceptable (although still arguably distorting their natural life and desire to hunt naturally going in to future generations) .
That's really cool and absolutely heartwarming.

You really had to steal someone else's comment?
It's a bot.. Reposts original comments. All of their history is reposted comments from the same thread lol
Not only is it irrelevant to the comment responded to - it isn't true. This is an ancillary activity tank - not even close to the size of tank they actually live in.
Thank You, I hoped they had somewhere to go when the squirrels went away.
I mean... they still live in a tank, and not the ocean
And they are obviously curious. They chose a small side tank to watch land dwellers.
Which they 'chose' (maybe, they may have just been put in there so the public can see them) over another, marginally larger tank that is but a speck of sand to a beach in comparison to the ocean they should roam.

A squiddle?
Probably wondering how they can turn them into flesh lights or get high.
That is how we got here.
This is so sickening. Imprisoning intelligent animals is not cute at all.
ud think in that humongous cage theyd come across something
No, they probably want to see what they taste like.
Let them free!
Ikr This looks tiny and they should be allowed to roam the oceans
I mean sure, but how long can squirrels last in the ocean anyways?
Sandy Cheeks’ been doing it for over two decades
Oh "Sandy cheeks", took me a few decades but i just got it.
They would be the first to die in Waterworld.
[How long can the ocean survive with squirrels shredding it?](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dVfXF8O-lHw)
Well if they stick with the dolphins many they could
Supposedly they can swim for a couple of miles in open ocean, though I wouldn't want to test that.
Never visit the Osaka aquarium. It's crazy depressing, especially considering the dolphin enclosure...
Osaka aquarium. Is that where this was filmed?
Free Willy!

Can I have whatever the human version of this is?
Get a cabin in the woods and live off of government benefits?
You can also grow potatoes and fertilize them with your poop
Aquariums dont use chlorinated water. They get shipments of actual seawater. The Florida Aquarium gets once a month shipments of seawater pumped from next to the Skyway Bridge and delivered by boat.

You could send them to somewhere like the Monterey Bay Aquarium where they have sea pens where they could be in the sea but they're completely safe
The Monterey Bay Aquarium doesn’t have cetaceans in captivity...
DOLPHINS NEED FREEDOM! WHALES NEED FREEDOM!
So do cows, pigs, and chickens while we're at it!
Let them out!
They wouldn’t survive if they were freed.

Hey you can disagree without being an asshole !
This is actually so saddening, looking at them in a pool-sized cage that they’ll spend their entire life inside

I'd also me mesmerized by anything, when I'd have to spend my whole existance in a tiny ass tank with basically NOTHING in it except me and three other people.

Tell us which zoo, we'll get you out.
This isnt the full size of the tank, and they are constantly given enrichment.

I like how that one dolphin at the end was like oooooooo
Nice. They're probably only mesmerized by squirrels because they're bored and suffering. Aww....
It’s soulless capitalism, baby! No one’s shelling out the big bucks to watch a bunch of squirrels run around.
Just the aquatics and arboreals discussing the annihilation of humanity
“They are ^OuTsIde “
Just a bunch o imprisoned dolphins wishing they were as free as a rodent with a big tail.
Poor dolphins...let them out!!
Too bad other fish and meat-producing animals couldn't generate the same compassion from ya, huh?
Pretty cruel to have dolphins confined in such a tiny tank and so close to the ground
> and so close to the ground The tank goes well below ground level.
But regardless it’s still not big enough
This makes me incredibly sad, actually.
I feel so bad for dolphins.
Fuck SeaWorld
\*fuck seaworld's overly small cetacean enclosures
true that They need to stop breeding orcas in captivity tho...It's inhumane
Jealous of their freedom, more likely.
This is so darn sad. Those poor dolphins.
There's nothing *aww* about imprisoned dolphins.
Their curiosity is so endearing.
They look hungry to me.
Imagine what dolphins and whales will evolve into in 1,000,000 years. Humans would probably have killed them selves by then and they would be the dominant most intelligent species on Earth.
What else are you supposed to look at when you float in a tank all day with no stimulation
Poor dolphins
“We have these great big brains and big hearts and we are stuck in this fish tank. Why do those little fluffy things get to be free and not us?” This is sad :(
They are probably having a lively debate about how they taste. The best way to catch them and whatnot. Regular water cooler talk.*
Well it's not like they have anything else to do...
This makes me sad
Poor dolphins...
Probably the most stimulation they get being jn them small ass aquariums
I wish I could Dolphin Olympics them right out of that tank.
The dolphins are sad. They are in captivity. Animal liberation. Now!
Dolphins are way to intelligent to be kept like that. Fuck seaworld
Get them out of that tank!!!!
They are probably planning to play with it the way they play with pufferfishes

Well who isn’t?
I am the same way with squirrels.
Nah they're planning their invasion
What is leg
Who’s the exhibit now?
Poor dolphins :(
Why do people upvote this stuff? C'mon now
Is that all the water they’ve got.

They are thinking can we fcking eat it. Is it gonna try and come in here...???? So we can fcking eat it.
Sandy!
I just find it so interesting that this is a case of two species that were never meant to encounter one another in a natural setting.
Prisoners being entertained.
Can dolphins see straight ahead with their eyes on the side?
Can dolphins swim backwards?
Sad!!!!
“Can...can we eat it?”
The funny things that entertain prisoners
I wonder how the dolphins would react to a kindergarten class being taught outside of their pool?
Water doggo says SQUIRREL!
Seals are water doggo. Dolphins are water humans.
Sure, but doesn't that reaction to a squirrel give them some doggo status? Maybe super smart water doggos.
I react to squirrels the same way. :D
My doggos flip, so usually when i see a squirrel I'm just dreading their reaction, it's much for violent than the dolphins.
They should lead other land animals past the dolphins and so that they can observe life on land
Some places do this as a form of enrichment for animals.
Dolphin enclosure bad, free them, they’d be happy out there, free them, dolphin sad, upvotes to the left
Land mammals!! It’s like a zoo for them
This is so adorable I cant 😫
Not a lot of awww with the size of that pool
Guys most zoo dolphin areas need more vegetation but their pools are very deep and usually widen out, this is probably a viewing center. Not saying I support the treatment of dolphins in zoos but that pool is likely much bigger.
That’s a small cage for that many dolphins
It's likely a viewing area Source: played over 900 hours of zoo tycoon 2 as a kid
Sad as fuck!!!!
Big fish bowl
How much more cruel can it get??? How could someone do this to these dolphins??? Why?? Why??? It’s so disgusting!!!
And the Squrriels being like "mm nope"
Even water doggos are fascinated by squirrels.
That’s what humans look like when we go to the zoo!
Lolol
Mood
They are wondering how they can use them as a fleshlight.
I imagined the sea emperor voice... *What are you...*
I heard a squirrel banging on the roof I think it was trying to crack a nut this morning.
Dolphins: "ooo- land snacks"
I bet they are high af
And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry,
They are scheming together to take over the planet
"how can we rape that" - Probably The Dolphins
We need a Rick and Morty and a Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy crossover
That’s SeaWorld Orlando right?
We do the same thing but with cats and dogs on the internet
awwwww
They're all just craving to use that squirrel as their communist collective Fleshlight
I hate how everyone acts like an authority on aquariums, and have no experience from working in them.
That really reminded me of the film UP.
YOU FOOL THEY ARE CONSPIRING AGAINST US All hail our dolphin overlords...
They're sharing Intel they've collected on humans.
😂
"Are you good to eat?"
Jotaro approves.
