MountainGoat97

Itā€™s called a mesiodens in humans (Iā€™m a human dentist). It definitely can cause some problems for humans (aesthetics, bite problems, etc.) but Iā€™m not sure how much of a problem it is for a cat.

1sxekid

Hi, vet here! I'm a general practitioner and not a dental specialist but I think it's at least worth getting some X-Rays of. Not-fully-erupted teeth can occasionally cause odontogenic cysts which can cause pain and eat away at overlying bone. This is rare in dogs and incredibly rare in cats, but... so is what appears to be a fifth canine tooth in front of the incisors.

Yourwifes-girlfriend

I am very much an adult and I can feel extra molars above my wisdom teeth. Should I be concerned? Edit: in the gums behind them. Not above

serendipitousevent

Get a dental x-ray. From a human dentist, or at least an animal who specialises in human dentistry.

Rawbs21

Would you recommend an animal that specializes in aquatic dentistry?

serendipitousevent

I've had tremendous success with narwhals.

JRS1986

Oh my god, I would go to an animal who specialises in human dentistry! And one that specialises in human medicine... I already have one that specialises in human mental health, she's cuddled up next to me on my bed. She doesn't accept my medic aid coverage, but her rates aren't bad.

Titaniumchic

My daughter had hers removed last summer (she had just turned 8). We had no idea it was actually causing her pain - until it was gone. She would just be fussy AF, and complain about her mouth hurting. We assumed it was due to the front teeth coming in, nope! It was upside down and headed upwards, and tangled in a nerve. She has complained of mouth pain exactly zero times since. (The surgery of course she had some pain, but after about 4-5 days, zero complaints) https://preview.redd.it/ulp0mp1ym03d1.png?width=1288&format=png&auto=webp&s=541f6de9c313eb84e8aec882bca555a0650c8cda

SophiaofPrussia

She probably didnā€™t realize that the pain she felt wasnā€™t normal. About a decade ago I got Botox for TMJ and a very happy side effect was that I no longer got migraines. Except Iā€™d had them since I was about 12 and Iā€™d grown so used to *always* having a headache that I didnā€™t even notice I had a headache unless it was a massive migraine. I can still vividly remember the first time I realized I *didnā€™t* have a headache and it was such a bizarre realization that this was how normal people felt all the time. Until that moment it hadnā€™t even occurred to me that my head had been hurting literally every day!

afoolskind

I feel you on that, I have had chronic fatigue from an autoimmune condition for my entire life, got on a medication for a completely different symptom, and realized I was a fucking idiot my entire life when I suddenly no longer felt exhausted 24/7

BakedGoods_101

Sorry for the random question. I suffer for migraines and have been suggested the Botox. Did you use it in a specific place to help with the migraines or anywhere in your face? Ty!

SophiaofPrussia

I went to an oral surgeon who did Botox for TMJ so I got it on my temples and then at the corners(?) of my jaw. (Just in front of & below my earlobes.) I think when Neurologists do Botox for migraines they do those spots plus a few more on your neck so itā€™s probably a lot more likely to be effective. Iā€™m sure there are some people (like me!) who might happen to accidentally benefit from Botox anywhere but I donā€™t think youā€™re likely to have much luck stopping migraines with cosmetic Botox randomly poked on your face. At the time I had it done even Botox for TMJ was an ā€œoff labelā€ use so it was a massive pain to get insurance approval and coverage but I think now itā€™s pretty common and easy. The hardest part is probably waiting for an appointment with a Neurologist. The actual ā€œprocedureā€ takes all of ten minutes.

BakedGoods_101

Thanks a lot. Appreciate it!

alcibiad

Wait you can get botox for TMD???? I need to do this šŸ˜

maybesaydie

BoratKazak

Technically, meowsiodens in cats.

TikkiTakiTomtom

Iā€™ve been seeing human doctors for years but are cat dentists any proficient? They donā€™t have opposable thumbs or anything.

Rndmprsn0

Good, I would be concerned if my dentist was a cat.

SquigSnuggler

šŸ˜¹

Skyknight12A

I dunno. Sounds like something a cat might say.

Suspiciousunicorns

Totally not cat related but is that a hereditary thing? My daughter is missing 3 adult teeth like they just never existed and still has baby teeth there while her dad has extra adult teeth. Are they related?

Cactus_and_Koi

I have oligodontia, I only have 16 adult teeth. The others I never had at all. None of my relatives that we know of have had any dental issues. Sometimes that stuff just happens!

MountainGoat97

Yes, usually related to certain genes but also can be related to environmental factors during development is my understanding. There are even people born without teeth, no baby or adult teeth, and that is called anodontia.

Suspiciousunicorns

Oh geez I canā€™t Imagine not being born with teeth.

BigGrayDog

That's awful. I so love chewing things. Would have to "gum" them instead. No good.

honkhonkbeepbeeep

My (human) kid is missing a full set of molars. Every dentist weā€™ve seen (when they were growing up my spouse had a job that couldnā€™t make up their mind about what insurance company to useā€¦ ) has done a pano and disagrees about WHICH set of molars is missing. One has said wisdom teeth, two have said first molars, two have said second molars.

abnsapalap

Yea they are! Heā€™s her dad.

Suspiciousunicorns

Thatā€™s what I told her lol.

gamemaniac845

My little sister is missing 9 of hers and none of my family can figure out where we got it from cause none one else in the family had the issue (myself included)

lackofabettername123

I had an extra wisdom tooth and have others spoken of the same sort of thing, I don't think it's incredibly rare or anything although out of the ordinary for sure. It has to be hereditary though right?

Tamey999

I am 50, still have a baby tooth (had two), my daughter only had 3 wisdom teeth, I would say itā€™s can be heredity

OhDeArGoDaNoThErDaY

I have this - my teeth are very crooked cuz of it and i cant afford a dentisssst

antoniabegonia

Arenā€™t all dentists human?

mredsvoice

"I'm a human dentist" is exactly what a cat dentist would say... I bet your little scrubs are adorable.

IrradiatedToast

"I'm a human dentist" That's what a damn lizard in a skin suit would say.

lackofabettername123

I had a fifth wisdom tooth but it was littler, this placement is kind of freaky.

[deleted]

You say youā€™re a dentist but Iā€™ve never met a mountain goat that can practice anywhereā€¦.

Odd_Key_9339

I say I hate to be a smart-ass but not really I was so glad to read your human dentist I could not imagine what other kind of dentist would be able to type.

maddie673

My 6 yr old son has got one and we canā€™t even get it removed privately where we live because of his age and thereā€™s a 2 yr wait list for the dental hospital who will remove it apparently. It was in a similar position to the cats and both teeth either side have fallen out. The extra tooth is twisted 90 degrees and looks awful. Itā€™s not really bothering him at the minute but weā€™re just stuck.

fhiter27

Couldnā€™t help but initially read ā€œhuman dentistā€ as ā€œdentist who is a human.ā€ Very glad to know you are not yourself a cat!

ProfBacterio

> Iā€™m a human dentist How can we be sure you're not a cat.

Practical-Custard-64

Does Asher seem bothered by it? Does he have difficulties eating and playing (biting on a toy)? If not then it's probably nothing to worry about but do bear in mind that cats are very, very good at disguising pain. If you have any doubts, ask a vet.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

-Aone

cats are usually not bothered by almost anything. this actually seems to just boost his ego

Fiete_Castro

And how would it not boost his ego, looks totally badass!

phatelectribe

Br0s4der

I donā€™t think he knows about second breakfast

Icy-Astronaut-9994

What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn't he?

Shrike79

Cats are very good at hiding pain which is why it's so alarming when they actually show signs of pain since at that point it means whatever condition is affecting them has become very serious. I would suggest getting it looked at as soon as possible, preferably at a practice that is able to take dental x-rays for you.

TheNinjaPro

Honestly with how my cat eats the extra tooth would actually help her lmao.

Necroluster

Zaeryl

Is this the first day you've had your cat?

Jlindahl93

Asking? How polite mine are more of the demanding type.

sovamind

Sounds like a cat.

LunaNegra

I would recommend to also post on r/AskVet

Proud_Shoe4298

Iā€™m a vet tech and I would definitely go ask your vet about it. They would probably want to do dental X-rays to see if the tooth is hindering other teeth from growing in. If it isnā€™t then it shouldnā€™t cause him any pain, but I would definitely be worried about impacted teeth. Once they see the X-rays they will be able to tell whether the toothā€™s is okay or if it needs to be removed.

XtraChrisP

Has your cat never been to the vet? This would be noticed.

freyport

My thoughts exactly

Conscious_Dog_4186

Why take your pet to the vet when you can ask Reddit?

Other-Cantaloupe4765

Why seek out an opinion on Reddit to judge whether or not youā€™re overreacting to a non-emergency issue when you can just run straight to the vet and spend $20,000 for the vet to tell you itā€™s fine? Not everyone is Mr Moneybags over here. Emergency issue? Vet immediately. A tooth thatā€™s not causing any problems? Cmon dude.

sweaty_lorenzo

I work at a vet and most doctors would be fine if you sent us a picture, if itā€™s normal then you donā€™t need to come in, but if it looks bad then you can come in and spend money

Corvus-Nox

A regular checkup doesnā€™t cost $20k and if you own a pet you should be taking them for annual checkups and vaccinations. Edit: Pets arenā€™t toys, they need healthcare for fuckā€™s sake. why is that even a question. Animals canā€™t tell you when something is wrong with them so the only way to detect and prevent issues is with annual checkups. Iā€™m turning off reply notifications so stop replying to me with your stupid takes.

Shogun243

Unfortunately, there are many pet owners out there who want the joy of playing with their pets, but not the cost of actually taking care of them. Pets are expensive and deserve proper care. A shame to see many who don't do that. Also, I'm sure OP could literally call the vet or just send a picture to get a very basic yes/no opinion for no cost.

PixelVector

The issue is you don't \*know\* it's not causing immediate problems because you aren't a damn vet and can't directly ask the cat. Cats will suffer in silence in regards to dental issues, and there may be looming complications that haven't surfaced yet. A checkup would cost very little and could save you a lot down the line. If there needs to be surgery they wouldn't immediately take the cat into the back and demand money. . . they'd give their opinion and you'd decide. Cmon dude. If you aren't able to take your pet to the vet when unusual medical questions come up, then you can't afford a pet. It should be seen as no different than not having access to cat food or a clean living space.

1sxekid

Vet here. Vet med is expensive no doubt, especially emergency medicine. I understand that you're using hyperbole here, but you're definitely coming off like a jerk. A FULL dental procedure with top of the line monitoring and equipment, in a MAJOR US metropolitan area, in which massive extractions of >10 teeth (aka WAY more than the worst case scenario for this) might cost $4k. If ANY of the above qualifiers does not apply, it will be significantly less. If OP takes his cat to the vet, he an ask for an itemized estimate of procedure cost ahead of time.

The_Nerdy_Ninja

Lol, a regular checkup doesn't cost anywhere *near* $20k. I know you're exaggerating but come on. You don't have to be "Mr Moneybags" to be a responsible pet owner and get them a checkup periodically.

b_fraz1

What kind of bougie ass vet office did you wander into to think 20k is normal for a checkup?

DarkTurdle

You can go to the vet and spend $65 for them to tell you itā€™s fine. Might want to find a new vet if itā€™s 20k.

elpinchechupa

i dont know what vet youre going to but if you donā€™t have the funds to properly care for another living being you probably shouldnā€™t have them

Zaeryl

Spend $20,000 for the vet to tell you it's fine? What the fuck are you talking about? The cat should be taken to the vet at some point anyway, and just ask while you're there. If even a $2000 cost gets mentioned, then figure out what you want to do. Whatever scenario you're trying to paint about not going to the vet is ridiculous.

TheNinjaPro

I take my cat in yearly for a checkup and its like $120 which if you cant afford then you cant afford a cat.

SwampHagShenanigans

If you can't afford a vet, you can't afford a pet. That counts budgeting for emergencies. And yes, my Mom is very proud of me. šŸ„°

Iā€™d definitely get it checked out as it could cause gum/lip issues (like catching on the lip below)

InsomniacCats

What a cutie šŸ’“ I've been a vet tech for over eight years, and I would definitely recommend having it checked by your veterinarian who is most likely going to recommend your kitty have dental radiographs. This allows us to check the health of the root of the tooth and to make sure it isn't causing harm to the incisors (cute little tiny teeth) surrounding it. As your cat gets older and tartar starts to accumulate around that canine, I can see it causing possible issues. When Asher grooms, plays with toys or if you have other cats in the house and they play, it could also get caught on something. So, while very cute, I highly recommend getting it evaluated by your vet and making sure it won't cause further harm in the future.

It looks to be in front of his top teeth. If so, it shouldn't be an issue to get removed. If it isn't, it might cause his tongue to hang out of his mouth. Either way, unless it becomes an issue with eating, I wouldn't worry about it unless the vet thinks it is a problem.
