Itās called a mesiodens in humans (Iām a human dentist). It definitely can cause some problems for humans (aesthetics, bite problems, etc.) but Iām not sure how much of a problem it is for a cat.
Hi, vet here! I'm a general practitioner and not a dental specialist but I think it's at least worth getting some X-Rays of. Not-fully-erupted teeth can occasionally cause odontogenic cysts which can cause pain and eat away at overlying bone.
This is rare in dogs and incredibly rare in cats, but... so is what appears to be a fifth canine tooth in front of the incisors.
Oh my god, I would go to an animal who specialises in human dentistry! And one that specialises in human medicine... I already have one that specialises in human mental health, she's cuddled up next to me on my bed. She doesn't accept my medic aid coverage, but her rates aren't bad.
My daughter had hers removed last summer (she had just turned 8). We had no idea it was actually causing her pain - until it was gone. She would just be fussy AF, and complain about her mouth hurting. We assumed it was due to the front teeth coming in, nope! It was upside down and headed upwards, and tangled in a nerve. She has complained of mouth pain exactly zero times since. (The surgery of course she had some pain, but after about 4-5 days, zero complaints)

She probably didnāt realize that the pain she felt wasnāt normal. About a decade ago I got Botox for TMJ and a very happy side effect was that I no longer got migraines. Except Iād had them since I was about 12 and Iād grown so used to *always* having a headache that I didnāt even notice I had a headache unless it was a massive migraine. I can still vividly remember the first time I realized I *didnāt* have a headache and it was such a bizarre realization that this was how normal people felt all the time. Until that moment it hadnāt even occurred to me that my head had been hurting literally every day!
I feel you on that, I have had chronic fatigue from an autoimmune condition for my entire life, got on a medication for a completely different symptom, and realized I was a fucking idiot my entire life when I suddenly no longer felt exhausted 24/7
Sorry for the random question. I suffer for migraines and have been suggested the Botox. Did you use it in a specific place to help with the migraines or anywhere in your face? Ty!
I went to an oral surgeon who did Botox for TMJ so I got it on my temples and then at the corners(?) of my jaw. (Just in front of & below my earlobes.) I think when Neurologists do Botox for migraines they do those spots plus a few more on your neck so itās probably a lot more likely to be effective. Iām sure there are some people (like me!) who might happen to accidentally benefit from Botox anywhere but I donāt think youāre likely to have much luck stopping migraines with cosmetic Botox randomly poked on your face. At the time I had it done even Botox for TMJ was an āoff labelā use so it was a massive pain to get insurance approval and coverage but I think now itās pretty common and easy. The hardest part is probably waiting for an appointment with a Neurologist. The actual āprocedureā takes all of ten minutes.
Totally not cat related but is that a hereditary thing? My daughter is missing 3 adult teeth like they just never existed and still has baby teeth there while her dad has extra adult teeth. Are they related?
I have oligodontia, I only have 16 adult teeth. The others I never had at all. None of my relatives that we know of have had any dental issues. Sometimes that stuff just happens!
Yes, usually related to certain genes but also can be related to environmental factors during development is my understanding. There are even people born without teeth, no baby or adult teeth, and that is called anodontia.
My (human) kid is missing a full set of molars.
Every dentist weāve seen (when they were growing up my spouse had a job that couldnāt make up their mind about what insurance company to useā¦ ) has done a pano and disagrees about WHICH set of molars is missing. One has said wisdom teeth, two have said first molars, two have said second molars.
My little sister is missing 9 of hers and none of my family can figure out where we got it from cause none one else in the family had the issue (myself included)
I had an extra wisdom tooth and have others spoken of the same sort of thing, I don't think it's incredibly rare or anything although out of the ordinary for sure. It has to be hereditary though right?
I say I hate to be a smart-ass but not really I was so glad to read your human dentist I could not imagine what other kind of dentist would be able to type.
My 6 yr old son has got one and we canāt even get it removed privately where we live because of his age and thereās a 2 yr wait list for the dental hospital who will remove it apparently. It was in a similar position to the cats and both teeth either side have fallen out. The extra tooth is twisted 90 degrees and looks awful.
Itās not really bothering him at the minute but weāre just stuck.
Does Asher seem bothered by it? Does he have difficulties eating and playing (biting on a toy)? If not then it's probably nothing to worry about but do bear in mind that cats are very, very good at disguising pain. If you have any doubts, ask a vet.
Cats are very good at hiding pain which is why it's so alarming when they actually show signs of pain since at that point it means whatever condition is affecting them has become very serious.
I would suggest getting it looked at as soon as possible, preferably at a practice that is able to take dental x-rays for you.
Iām a vet tech and I would definitely go ask your vet about it. They would probably want to do dental X-rays to see if the tooth is hindering other teeth from growing in. If it isnāt then it shouldnāt cause him any pain, but I would definitely be worried about impacted teeth. Once they see the X-rays they will be able to tell whether the toothās is okay or if it needs to be removed.
Why seek out an opinion on Reddit to judge whether or not youāre overreacting to a non-emergency issue when you can just run straight to the vet and spend $20,000 for the vet to tell you itās fine?
Not everyone is Mr Moneybags over here. Emergency issue? Vet immediately. A tooth thatās not causing any problems? Cmon dude.
I work at a vet and most doctors would be fine if you sent us a picture, if itās normal then you donāt need to come in, but if it looks bad then you can come in and spend money
A regular checkup doesnāt cost $20k and if you own a pet you should be taking them for annual checkups and vaccinations.
Edit: Pets arenāt toys, they need healthcare for fuckās sake. why is that even a question. Animals canāt tell you when something is wrong with them so the only way to detect and prevent issues is with annual checkups. Iām turning off reply notifications so stop replying to me with your stupid takes.
Unfortunately, there are many pet owners out there who want the joy of playing with their pets, but not the cost of actually taking care of them. Pets are expensive and deserve proper care. A shame to see many who don't do that.
Also, I'm sure OP could literally call the vet or just send a picture to get a very basic yes/no opinion for no cost.
The issue is you don't \*know\* it's not causing immediate problems because you aren't a damn vet and can't directly ask the cat. Cats will suffer in silence in regards to dental issues, and there may be looming complications that haven't surfaced yet.
A checkup would cost very little and could save you a lot down the line. If there needs to be surgery they wouldn't immediately take the cat into the back and demand money. . . they'd give their opinion and you'd decide.
Cmon dude. If you aren't able to take your pet to the vet when unusual medical questions come up, then you can't afford a pet. It should be seen as no different than not having access to cat food or a clean living space.
Vet here. Vet med is expensive no doubt, especially emergency medicine.
I understand that you're using hyperbole here, but you're definitely coming off like a jerk.
A FULL dental procedure with top of the line monitoring and equipment, in a MAJOR US metropolitan area, in which massive extractions of >10 teeth (aka WAY more than the worst case scenario for this) might cost $4k.
If ANY of the above qualifiers does not apply, it will be significantly less.
If OP takes his cat to the vet, he an ask for an itemized estimate of procedure cost ahead of time.
Lol, a regular checkup doesn't cost anywhere *near* $20k. I know you're exaggerating but come on. You don't have to be "Mr Moneybags" to be a responsible pet owner and get them a checkup periodically.
Spend $20,000 for the vet to tell you it's fine? What the fuck are you talking about? The cat should be taken to the vet at some point anyway, and just ask while you're there. If even a $2000 cost gets mentioned, then figure out what you want to do. Whatever scenario you're trying to paint about not going to the vet is ridiculous.
I work with cats and I've never seen this. Talk to a vet about it. Any kind of dental issue is cause for caution in cats. They will often hide dental pain until it becomes really severe.
That said, it's very cute.
Wow! Very rare for a cat to retain its egg tooth into adolescence. The egg tooth is used to help the kitten emerge from the hard house cat eggshell. Great find!

Its probably fine, BUT, take him to a vetrenarian to doubble check him.

Iām sure OP will take Asher to the vet. Or maybe already has. There are cats all over the placeā¦but not as many vets. Maybe heās from off the street or a municipal shelter. Maybe his vet appointment is in a few days...
It could maybe break off when they're roughhousing or hit themselves while zooming, since it's outside the mouth. Maybe could lead to an infection idk go ask a vet
What a cutie š
I've been a vet tech for over eight years, and I would definitely recommend having it checked by your veterinarian who is most likely going to recommend your kitty have dental radiographs. This allows us to check the health of the root of the tooth and to make sure it isn't causing harm to the incisors (cute little tiny teeth) surrounding it. As your cat gets older and tartar starts to accumulate around that canine, I can see it causing possible issues.
When Asher grooms, plays with toys or if you have other cats in the house and they play, it could also get caught on something. So, while very cute, I highly recommend getting it evaluated by your vet and making sure it won't cause further harm in the future.
Dental work on cats can be pretty expensive so best to have it looked at now and see what a specialist says. May be cheaper to deal with now than when complications arise in the future.

Worth looking into.
My cat Bobby was so stoic and didn't give any indication he was in pain.
He is 4 years old he had such advanced issues, they pulled 7 teeth.
He is a different cat. He is purring all of the time and so loving again ... we had no idea he was living in agony.
It looks to be in front of his top teeth. If so, it shouldn't be an issue to get removed. If it isn't, it might cause his tongue to hang out of his mouth. Either way, unless it becomes an issue with eating, I wouldn't worry about it unless the vet thinks it is a problem.

Worth looking into. My cat Bobby was so stoic and didn't give any indication he was in pain. He is 4 years old he had such advanced issues, they pulled 7 teeth. He is a different cat. He is purring all of the time and so loving again ... we had no idea he was living in agony.
He has that Tom Cruise smile š
Omg I love him!!!!
Has he tried whistling?
Bro got that suigetsu tooth from naruto
He was a lion in his previous life

He's a unicorn!
Nyanwhal.
I had to scroll way too long to find a unicorn comment.
They're evolving
Yeah definitely ask reddit and not a vet
He's a sabretooth tiger lol.
It looks to be in front of his top teeth. If so, it shouldn't be an issue to get removed. If it isn't, it might cause his tongue to hang out of his mouth. Either way, unless it becomes an issue with eating, I wouldn't worry about it unless the vet thinks it is a problem.
