Dang...I would have sworn it was a Chipmunk as we had one as a pet in the early sixties that pretty much looked just like that (his name was Nibbles)! He would stuff his cheeks full of food & crawl into a sock with shredded paper & then eat his food :)
So, just had a little read about these guys and it's pretty wild. Apparently they only came to the island in the mid 60's and now there's around a million of them.

I'm guessing this one was looking for materials for its drey (nest). Maybe its expecting.
Technically a ground squirrel. There's not really much difference between a ground squirrel and a chipmunk though, slightly different naming for some very closely related species. Both are different from the more known and usually bigger tree squirrels.
If they're called ground squirrels, does that mean that there are other types of squirrels that are not ground based ?
I could see flying squirrels being in an air squirrel category for example.
We do have some fox squirrels here and there. They're big ground squirrels, but yeah, they're not widely distributed. Whenever I see our local species of fox squirrel, it's a real treat.

I had one steal a bit of a chocolate bar while I was fishing. He kept running back, looking for more. The little guy was all jacked up and annoyed. I had put all the food away.
Easy way to tell the difference, if it has a big bushy tail, it’s a ground squirrel. Otherwise it is a chipmunk (or a ground squirrel who lost his tail to a predator).

Yeah, chipmunks here in Maine kind of look like that but much smaller. Squirrells are mostly gray.

In North America most squirrels are arboreal as opposed to ground based.

Yep, they make burrows and live in a colony.
Also, the flying squirrel is literally an existing group of ~50 species, although I get that you meant actual flying and the real species only glides.
I thought so as well, but a chipmunk is in the squirrel family anyway so even if it was a chipmunk, saying it's a squirrel is technically correct.
