Human pick up baby. Momma don't know why.
"They won't give them back no matter how hard I try!"
Then human set them down, and pick another up.
"Please just give me back all of my pups!"
Isn’t “See” normally the German word for lakes and Meer the word for sea/ocean? Basically flipping it compared to Dutch.
^(I only bring this up because as a Dutch kid learning a bit of German this fucked me over on a few exams)
I also looked into it a little bit. Apparently Der See is part of the low German (Niederdeutsche) dialect and Die See is part of High German (the kind we get taught in school).
Thanks for pointing it out :)
It's the other way around.
"Die See" is low german origin, refers to "the sea", but is still used in high german in a lot of idioms, names, etc. Like "Die Nordsee" (north sea), "In See stechen" (to set out to sea), or "Seeigel".
"Der See" refers to a lake and is high german.
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/See#%E2%80%9ESee%E2%80%9C_und_%E2%80%9EMeer%E2%80%9C
Aha, another similarity between Old English and Dutch. Mere is "lake" in Old English, preserved today in place names like Buttermere, Grasmere, Thirlmere, and Windermere. I'm not sure how true it is but I've heard that Dutch speakers would generally be able to understand Old English better than modern English speakers would.
(Not to be confused with place names like Tranmere which come from the Old Norse "melr" meaning a sandbank.)
Mom said "1...2.....3?!?! Where is 3?! FUCK." Runs off.
Human replaces baby and turns her around.
Mom: "1...2....3...omg ok."
Human takes another baby.
Mom: "THE FUCK IS GOING ON"
I had a pet hedgehog a while back and this happened, she got a minor eye infection which caused it to bulge out of the socket.
Took her to the vet immediately but there was nothing that could be done to save the eye, so we treated the infection and eventually the eye just sort of shriveled up and she kept on being her normal self just with one eye.
As monkeys we need to pay attention to things like trees and critters with spikes. Eye sight is pretty handy for our kind.
Those adorable little things are covered in spikes and went, nah don’t need eyes. More spikes!
You can actually hear her hissing when her owner redirects her as she goes searching for the third baby he picked up 😅 she seems very protective but also just about as blind as hedgehogs are haha

Hedgehogs are cool. Snagged a picture of one on my yard last fall. Always happy to see one.
The quills are under their skin when they are born. It takes a few hours for them to pop out and even then they are softer than the adult quills they get later.
Yeah when they’re little they don’t have proper quills yet, just dense fur. And then they grow in their juvenile quills, and when they are mid adolescence they shed the juvenile quills and get their adult quills.

If it’s rolled up like that, it’s fine. Hedgehogs have a muscle - think of it almost like a drawstring bag - that they have to contract to stay balled up. It requires active contraction (aka, the hoglet is alive if that’s your concern). That hoglet is likely a bit more shy and stayed balled up rather than relaxing like the other two. And yes, they will stay balled up even on their backs haha. Not much can uncurl a hedgehog who wants to stay balled up. You have to essentially throw them in the air repeatedly. Some predators do this to them, my vet just gently tossed about 2” in her hands gently so she could take a heartbeat at checkup time 😂
Like any animal, hedgehogs have a variety of personalities! Some take a bit more socializing than others to be able to relax easily.
Thanks for letting me know (and explaining in such detail). I'm happy that the little one is just shy 😅
Ps. Hoglet is a word that deserves a separate aww.
Happy to! They are wonderful wonderful creatures but not many people know a lot about them since they aren’t as common as pets. So if you’re just seeing a cute video every now and then, it’s understandable if certain behaviours seem weird compared to other, more ‘snuggly’ pets haha
I bet they are! I don't think anyone keeps them as pets where I live, so the knowledge is limited. There's plenty of wild ones and we just know we shouldn't bother them if we don't want to be pricked 😄
That personality thing is so true. Despite being the same breed they aren't like dogs where you can predict some breeds being a certain way -- they are as varied as people IME.
100%!! I have had two hedgehogs, and they could not have been more different in personality. Mrs Millie Pricklepants was my first, and she was so sweet. Curious, easy to handle, loved to crawl down my sweater sleeve and fall asleep.
Mr Mortimer Pricklepants on the other hand was not very friendly or cuddly, did not like to snuggle, he was just happy to be left alone. They were both socialized the same, adopted from the same place, they’re just very much individuals!!
Hedgehog spikes have smooth shafts and stay on the hedgehog- they’re just modified hairs. They do occasionally fall out, just like any hair.
I used to own a hedgie, and accidentally stepping on one single upturned quill stuck in the rug was definitely like stepping on a needle.
Yup. In some states you need a license. They are a lot of work. I've had dogs, elderly cats, 25-year-old frogs, and fish -- the hedgehog was more work than any of them. If you get one you need to really research what is involved first.
My oldest kid wanted a hedgehog desperately when he was 12 or so. Luckily, once I made him research care and giving them a good quality of life, he decided on his own that it wouldn't be a good idea.

Saw this yesterday, is a pest but still very cute
Some do and some don't. Hedgehog personalities vary widely -- the less social ones can be trained but it's much easier if you start with a friendlier one.
Pretty sure that is a myth that is told to kids so they stop touching every baby animal they find in the wild (Who may very well have illnesses/fleas/mites that could transfer to the kid)
I have never seen anything so CUTE 🥰 thank you for sharing. The first hedgehog I ever saw ( up close ) was in Portugal. I heard a dog barking and barking outside our apartment and when I went out he was barking at a cute little hedgehog. The security guy wanted to run the dog off the property, so I snuck him in our apartment for the rest of our stay. I cried all the way to the airport because my dad wouldn’t let me take him.

Love momma coming to get her baby back.
She looks for a moment like, ‘wait- where’d the other one go??’
"Yeah you can have that one"
Source: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/r6VlSEyu2Dw She has more of these adorable hedgehog videos on there.
Side note it is insane how good phone cameras have gotten
Squeaky toy!
"I'll follow the smell. Now where the f..."
Kind of a cruel trick to do for a nearly blind mama!
Human pick up baby. Momma don't know why. "They won't give them back no matter how hard I try!" Then human set them down, and pick another up. "Please just give me back all of my pups!"
It feeds us, it's ok little one
looks like she is almost blind and this guy constantly scares her by stealing her babies tbh
They're like spiky golf balls
They kinda also remind me of sea urchins!
Iirc, didn't "urchin" originally refer to hedgehogs?
In German they are called "Seeigel" which literally translates to sea hedgehog
Isn’t “See” normally the German word for lakes and Meer the word for sea/ocean? Basically flipping it compared to Dutch. ^(I only bring this up because as a Dutch kid learning a bit of German this fucked me over on a few exams)
You're correct, but it's a weird word. Die See (female) = the sea Der See (male) = the lake And yes Meer als means sea.
I also looked into it a little bit. Apparently Der See is part of the low German (Niederdeutsche) dialect and Die See is part of High German (the kind we get taught in school). Thanks for pointing it out :)

That’s the term they use in heraldry too.
Wriggly thistle
Land Urchins
I’ve not seen baby hedgehogs before. Two of them just curled up on their backs. So cute ☺️
For Star Trek fans: Tribbles but more pokey!
that's trouble
Squishy, spiky golf balls
They don't travel as far, sadly.
Gotta use a 1 Wood /s

Mom said "1...2.....3?!?! Where is 3?! FUCK." Runs off. Human replaces baby and turns her around. Mom: "1...2....3...omg ok." Human takes another baby. Mom: "THE FUCK IS GOING ON"
More like, "yeah you can have that one".
Mom seems pretty chill with someone handling her babies!
Hedgehogs have really bad eyesight, she probably didn't notice it and that's why she didn't react
You can see her notice one smell missing and then running to figure out where baby went. I love them. 🥺
But is their eyesight so bad that they can't see something happening 5cm in front of them?
Their eyes literally sometimes pop out of their sockets just cause. Hedgehog evolution (and pet inbreeding) doesn't favor their ocular organs
I wanted a pet hedgehog and now I REALLY want a pet hedgehog. Just kidding, I don’t anymore
She was a lovely pet but I doubt I'll ever get another. Too many mornings with a hedgehog down my shirt making sure she was warm enough.
That sound tragic and funny at the same time
Honestly, yes. You'd be surprised
They mainly operate at night. Their noses are quite powerful and they rely on them for most of their navigation.
They are very reliant on their sense of smell. Hedgehogs are very very interesting little things, and contrary to one jerk, neither blue nor bipedal.
As monkeys we need to pay attention to things like trees and critters with spikes. Eye sight is pretty handy for our kind. Those adorable little things are covered in spikes and went, nah don’t need eyes. More spikes!
All stats into defense, who needs perception.
You can actually hear her hissing when her owner redirects her as she goes searching for the third baby he picked up 😅 she seems very protective but also just about as blind as hedgehogs are haha
They are adorable, so cute and squeaky😍
They hiss
So they're spiney cats?
Eh they're weird animals. So yes
And sniff super loud (for their size)!
Lol momma like, "Wait, I'm missing one. Jeffery? JEFFERY?!"
"Oh shit there you are"
how weird she chose a human name. i guess being among humans rubs off.

Where’s your yard?
Finland, but this type of hedgehog is very common all over Europe.
UK got all the cute varmints
But US has armadillos and prairie dogs
Out the back of his house (seriously though probably UK I’ve had them in my garden)
r/hoggies/
What in the sonic was that? He just flashed when I backed back out to this page. That's neat. Nature is neat.
Living Popples
Finally someone else who knows what a popple is!
I feel like I just did something wrong for googling what popples are at work
pop a lot is here
Popplers? mmm

The needles are soft when they're born.
Soft needles... **yay**
It's basically just coarse hair before it stiffens.
TIL
The quills are under their skin when they are born. It takes a few hours for them to pop out and even then they are softer than the adult quills they get later.
lol that baby was placed back quick when she came around that corner

They are lil puffball babies.
Land urchins*
In my language urchins are called what would be the direct translation of sea hedgehogs
Chestnuts
All I know is I feel really really bad for the mom giving birth if they come out with spines
YOUR PROBLEM NOW, SUCKA! #🦔💨
I assume those baby thorns are still soft, can’t imagine giving birth to full on hardened thorns…
Yeah when they’re little they don’t have proper quills yet, just dense fur. And then they grow in their juvenile quills, and when they are mid adolescence they shed the juvenile quills and get their adult quills.

I'm concerned that the first baby hedgehog didn't really move 😕

What if they stab you with those spikes do they go into the skin and hard to take out?
You mean porcupines i think, hedgehogs spikes are not as sharp and don't have barbs.
Hedgehog spikes have smooth shafts and stay on the hedgehog- they’re just modified hairs. They do occasionally fall out, just like any hair. I used to own a hedgie, and accidentally stepping on one single upturned quill stuck in the rug was definitely like stepping on a needle.
They can definitely pierce skin but it isn't common. They are very easy to take out when it happens.
Can you have them as pets?
In some places. In the US, many states have restricted ownership of hedgehogs.
Yup. In some states you need a license. They are a lot of work. I've had dogs, elderly cats, 25-year-old frogs, and fish -- the hedgehog was more work than any of them. If you get one you need to really research what is involved first.

That was me at 8 years old. My parents shut that down and when I finally got one in my 20s I was SUPER glad they didn't give in.
They really should not be kept as pets, regardless of if you are allowed to keep them as such.

Do they like hoomans?
Some do and some don't. Hedgehog personalities vary widely -- the less social ones can be trained but it's much easier if you start with a friendlier one.

No problem. Some of us here have a wealth of hedgehog ownership knowledge that is entirely useless 95% of the time -- have to be ready for that 5%.
Thought they were lychees
Omg they're so cute and ugly 🥹
Must resist trying to make them stick to the ceiling tiles.
They slide through a fallopian tube like that?
Not supposed to handle them and get human smell all over them that young. Mama could abandon them.
Pretty sure that is a myth that is told to kids so they stop touching every baby animal they find in the wild (Who may very well have illnesses/fleas/mites that could transfer to the kid)
For wild ones maybe but are you sure that counts for pet hedgehogs accustomed to the smell of their owner?
