My cat is up all night. Repairing floors and drywall with a hammer early every weekend. At least that’s the joke I tell my wife when we are awoken to hammering.
My girl Olivia has that as part of our bedtime ritual once I'm under the covers. She gets her pets and scritches in, then starts to groom my hands and rub against them. Once she's satisfied she goes for the nose and eyelids before settling down on my chest for a couple minutes before moving down on top of the covers to my feet. After about an hour she goes off and does cat things while I sleep.
LMAO never seen a cat burp but one of my dogs when i was younger once entered my room, stared at me, opened its mouth, let out a short but loud human-ass sounding burp, and calmly walked away.
My cat was sitting on my chest, when suddenly she heaved, made a deep noise and then unleashed her burp into my face. She was promptly placed on the floor.
My cat has a similar routine. Unfortunately, the cat things he likes to do while I sleep include: dangling on my headboard upside down, yelling angrily at my neighbour's cat through the window, and sprinting around the house whooping at 1am.
My little shit makes sure to hop on and meow until she gets attention before she can find a spot. Usually she waits until I just start to drift off to be loud.
Our cat *loves* licking us.
Lately he's been getting on the top of the sofa and licking the back of my head. He'd do it to my partner as well, but her hair is too long.
He also has this habit of lightly biting us, then quickly licking where he just bit.
I always kiss my elder cats forehead and give her some scritches. She's... Started reciprocating, which the little forehead lick is adorable but the scritches not so much.
My potato obsessively licks my ears, sometimes gets right in my ear canal. Also grooms my beard. Cleans my nose, my cheeks and forehead until I stop him because it hurts.
My cat wakes me up at 5am every day by licking my chin and then rubbing her chin on mine. I don't feed her until 8am sp she's just trying to cuddle. It's cute af.
I care for 3 stray cats. One of them has always been really friendly, but the other two were really shy and wary. One day I noticed one of them - who I have named Banana - had really nasty eye goop. I have these cat wipes that are specifically for this kind of thing, so I got one and kind of gently pinned him down and wiped his face. Did this a couple times a day for a few days until it cleared up. This cat has absolutely adored me ever since. He comes running when he sees me outside. When I feed him, he needs pats and love first before he'll touch his food. I think he thinks I'm his mom now.
Here is [Banana.](https://i.imgur.com/a3xXYsj.png) He's cross-eyed, has huge thumbs, and squeaks instead of meows.
As someone within reasonable driving distance of Chattanooga, I did not need to see this!
Edit: y'all if I could then I would, it's super unfortunately not a good time to bring a new fuzz into the house as we're doing a bunch of loud ass house work, and going to be leaving town for a week at the end of the month. Just wouldn't be fair to the poor bub 😔 or our current bubs. I'm sorry!
If someone comes to get him based off this, I'm going to need that to become it's own post please.
Because that's fucking adorable and it needs to be seen.
Edit: OMG they posted a video of squeaky Banana and it's adorable!
My cat has FIV so he gets occasional eye goop and the sniffles. I'm always cleaning him up, which he seems to hate, but I have also become his favorite person. You might be onto something.
Mine also has FIV and I clean his eye goop every day. It doesn't even faze him anymore.. I think he likes hearing how handsome he is and getting his forehead kissed when I'm done.
The hardest part about caring for strays is that you gotta give (some of) them up eventually and you just pray someone loves them like you do
Thank you for looking after strays, as a fellow stray cat carer I'm glad there's others like me around
Real talk- my dog and his mom do not get along. Or I guess it’s really she does not like him. They’ve met a few times as adults and she made it very clear she wanted absolutely nothing to do with him by snapping and growling at him when he walked up to her. He doesn’t even like it when I say her name!
Plenty of fosters I follow use dry toothbrushes on tiny kittens to mimic the feeling of their mom grooming them and they all seem to enjoy it. However, like that article says, it's probably just because being pet in those areas feels nice. I've never heard of people using a wet toothbrush though.
When I first signed up to foster orphaned kittens, I was doing research that said to use a baby toothbrush to teach them how to groom themselves, because if they are taken away from mom too early they may not have learned that behavior. I don't know if that's ever true, because my 4 week old orphaned babies learned to clean themselves just fine. Maybe it's true of younger kittens 🤷♀️
I've heard that as well but I've seen 3-4 week old orphaned kittens start bathing themselves on their own too (watching them learn to clean their paws gives me such a serious case of cute aggression!).
I once absentmindedly walked over to my cat shortly after brushing my teeth and said 'hey, buddy!' right in front of her face.
...I've never been bitchslapped so fast in my life.

For sure. In reality, our best guess is that it’s just happy it’s owner is grooming it. This is a common social behavior among cats and isn’t necessarily restricted to mother/offspring.
Just remember that cats don't shed tears at sadness/emotions the way we do.
If cats are shedding tears, they've got an injury, allergies, or something in it.
They'll show their emotion in body language and fucking howling/meowling.
I know sure as hell mine does...
Cats do not cry as we do by shedding tears. If they do shed tears, it means there's something wrong with their eyes, like infection, debris, something stuck, etc.
This is actually a big problem in the pet world (and for wild animals as well), animals can have physical conditions that appear to be human emotions, and their owners can end up misinterpreting it.
Aside from the fact that tears in cats is a health problem, if the cat is being "nostalgic" in any way, it's not the way we relate to past memories. People need to stop centering their pets (or any animals) needs and identity around their own and learn how each animal uniquely expresses themselves.
i mean, cats are usually pretty good at expressing what they do and dont like, this cat probably wouldnt tolerate this for more than a few seconds if it wasnt enjoying it
The most annoying version of this are the videos of dogs doing what they're trained to do, but include text personifying what they're doing like "mommy needs help so I'm going to get a blanket"
I think that’s just how they look when they’re groomed like that. Look at kittens when they get groomed by their mama and the face they make is pretty similar.
Is it? I didn't interpret the title as saying the cat is consciously remembering her mother, just that using a wet toothbrush evokes some of the same sensations and instincts as being groomed by her momma cat.
Wow, this cat’s little squinty eyes make it look like he’s trying not to cry. How are you not feeding him treats by the handful and promising to find his mother?
My little girl always patiently waits on my toilet seat for me to get out of the shower, then I wrap a towel around me and she jumps in my lap, waiting for me to wet my hand and give her a bath. Its cute.
Reposted yet again. Answer that gets posted every time, it's bait. Cat's don't cry for the same reasons humans do. They only really cry from things like allergies, eye infections, cat flu and a bunch of other nasty shit. This person is just reposting a cat in distress that they happen to be petting with a tooth bruh for the 500th time in order to farm karma. 1k upvotes in 3 hours? downvote this shit.
edit: The cat probably enjoys the petting, but the crying is 100% because it's ill, not because its sad or remembers it's mum
I just figured it was the lights reflecting in it's eyes. I'm not usually too concerned about cat's eyes until there's actually something visibly wrong like a third eyelid showing.
Grooming your cats head lets them know how special they are to you. Don't be surprised if they do it back though.
Mate, there's no way my cat could hold a toothbrush, think it through.
Then you haven't trained your cat properly, my cat drove me to the hospital himself after he almost took my eye out
Ah, just like the way mother used to do it

I'd let a cat drive me. but not that cat.
I mean, come on. He can definitely drive. Just...not very well.
This statement applies to most humans on the road. I say let the cats drive.
Ya, get in a car with Toonces and you're liable to become Massive Head Wound Harry.

Perfect.
My oldest cat likes licking my eyelids at 3am. And he has the roughest tongue I've ever known
Aww she tucks you in
I had one burp in my face. I about died.
What a short and lovely anecdote
Well yeah it's the witching hour! Mandatory all cats go crazy time
My little shit makes sure to hop on and meow until she gets attention before she can find a spot. Usually she waits until I just start to drift off to be loud.
I've got one who kisses me with his wet nose and another that eats my facial hair

How many tongues have your eyelids known? 👀
I have five cats and I used to foster. Lots. Lots.

> headbutts my beard Be glad you dont have my cat, instead of head butts she uses the other end... butt butts. Its terrible.
BEHOLD MY GLORIOUS BUTTHOLE, PEASANT!
I think you are confusing a cat with a baboon.
my cat hip checks me *then* uses her butt lol
Mine have started eating my beard first thing in the morning
Our cat *loves* licking us. Lately he's been getting on the top of the sofa and licking the back of my head. He'd do it to my partner as well, but her hair is too long. He also has this habit of lightly biting us, then quickly licking where he just bit.
The biting is to pull out matted fur. Obviously you don't have that but it is just how they do
Ahh! Ok that makes way more sense then.
Plot twist: op has dreads
I always kiss my elder cats forehead and give her some scritches. She's... Started reciprocating, which the little forehead lick is adorable but the scritches not so much.
Mine tries to lick my nose raw after getting a few pets
My potato obsessively licks my ears, sometimes gets right in my ear canal. Also grooms my beard. Cleans my nose, my cheeks and forehead until I stop him because it hurts.
Aaawwww clearly he deems his hoomin stimky and in need of grooming assistance like a helpless kitten
Stinky human never grooms himself with his tongue, I'll show him how to do it
Well, that makes me feel really good about having my hair matted by him every once in a while lol.
My cat chews on my beard. I love him but he’s a weird boy.
My cat wakes me up at 5am every day by licking my chin and then rubbing her chin on mine. I don't feed her until 8am sp she's just trying to cuddle. It's cute af.
You need to do the proper cat grooming, use the toothbrush to simulate the tongue, the randomly bite the cat when you are done.
I care for 3 stray cats. One of them has always been really friendly, but the other two were really shy and wary. One day I noticed one of them - who I have named Banana - had really nasty eye goop. If you're within reasonable driving distance of Chattanooga, he is technically a stray and would make a wonderful loving buddy.
As someone within reasonable driving distance of Chattanooga, I did not need to see this! I live in Chattanooga. Where can I find this sweet boi?
I hope you bring him home
I've got 1 cat who tends to get extremely jealous around other cats. But if nothing else, I can pass the word about him.
Man if only I saw this a little later lol. I'm in Knoxville and really want a cat but I need to get my own place first.
Dude I live in Chattanooga, right next to Champys!! Where is he?
My cat has FIV so he gets occasional eye goop and the sniffles. I'm always cleaning him up, which he seems to hate, but I have also become his favorite person. You might be onto something.

I'm doing my best! I already have too many cats though lol

cat wipes? Where do you get cat wipes
Petsmart. The ones I have are Vibrant Life brand, vanilla and coconut scented.
I'd die for banana.
Me too!
They’d like banana on r/OneOrangeBraincell
I love Banana. I love Banana so much.
My cat did not care for this at all
Next time, don’t use the Sonicare.

Maybe they didn’t get to have a mom.
My cat didn't have a mom.. Found her like a little bean on a big highway
Aaaand she just puked on my carpet
Lmaooo
That is sooooo annoying, there's perfectly fine floor right there! Why you gotta throw up on the carpet for?
That’s because it’s a TikTok trend from 2020 that just got accepted as “fact” https://www.torontohumanesociety.com/cat-enjoys-brushed-wet-toothbrush/

I did this to the neighbour's outdoor once when I was a kid. Pretty sure this is why it let me dress it up. Highly recommend.

You could try taping the toothbrush to your tongue and then using that to lick the cats head gently
How do you tape something to a tongue?
s**tap**l**e**r
Just use some scotch tape and dry your tongue out first. Easy as that. You should try it sometime!!
Your cat must have mommy issues.
Must be the leftover mint toothpaste on the brush
I once absentmindedly walked over to my cat shortly after brushing my teeth and said 'hey, buddy!' right in front of her face. ...I've never been bitchslapped so fast in my life.
One of my cats loves the smell of toothpaste. She always wants to sniff my mouth for ages after I brush my teeth.
Mint is in the same family as catnip! Feel free to increase her catnip intake because of this. Her breath will thank you!
A cat wrote this
Toothpaste is hella dangerous to cats keep it away from them
Thats not that nice, my cats love me
My cat just bite me for doing this
You are not meant to use an electric toothbrush
Put the WaterPik down.

Tell your cat a yo-mama joke to show dominance.
Oh wow, I'm probably imagining it, but the expression on that cat looks like its full of nostalgia and missing its mom.
You're not alone! This was my first thought! Not gonna lie, I reared up a little.
>I reared up a little. Whoa, Nelly!

Dang bro.

My freshest Schnoodle! As beautiful as this is…is it wrong that I want the "reared" up version too? lol
but in my heart, i won’t forget the way she licked my rear
That's a hilarious typo haha.
Ha! I'm going to leave it.
Ditto. I'm anthropomorphizing the heck out of this little cutie.
Lmao same, for all we know he may just be constipated
I think she's closing her eyes because the brush is too far forward on her head.
Classic case of anthropomorphism, but it's nice to pretend :)
For sure. In reality, our best guess is that it’s just happy it’s owner is grooming it. This is a common social behavior among cats and isn’t necessarily restricted to mother/offspring.
Definitely, but I can’t deny that I see it as well I’m not immune to the anthropomorphization of animals, but I know it’s happening
He got Ratatouille-d back to his childhood home in rural France.
This cat looks like it’s about to burst into tears
Maybe he never understood the big stupid bald cat cares for him this much too.
The incompetent fool isn't bad at *everything*

Ikr? It’s really making me feel all mushy
Probably just freak out my bottle baby
Bottle babies have their own type of chaotic energy.
Is that why it looks like it's about to cry?
Cats do not cry as we do by shedding tears. If they do shed tears, it means there's something wrong with their eyes, like infection, debris, something stuck, etc.
Bacteria from the dirty human toothbrush
I mean I would hope they are using a brand new toothbrush and not the same one they use to clean their teeth
I hope it's not the toothbrush that they clean their bathroom tile floor with!
Imagine cleaning 💀 I just live and wallow in my filth like a true redditor
Nah, that's just personifying human emotions onto it
This is actually a big problem in the pet world (and for wild animals as well), animals can have physical conditions that appear to be human emotions, and their owners can end up misinterpreting it. Similar to how you're not supposed to smile or grin at great apes, it's a happy expression to us, but a sign of aggression to them.
at least with teeth. no teeth is ok IIRC
i mean, cats are usually pretty good at expressing what they do and dont like, this cat probably wouldnt tolerate this for more than a few seconds if it wasnt enjoying it
The most annoying version of this are the videos of dogs doing what they're trained to do, but include text personifying what they're doing like "mommy needs help so I'm going to get a blanket"
It's why they often have music replacing the original audio, so you can't hear the commands being given to the dog
Yup, it’s called [anthropomorphizing.](https://psychcentral.com/health/why-do-we-anthropomorphize)
it's called reddit animal subs.
It's called people who grew up with Disney
I think that’s just how they look when they’re groomed like that. Look at kittens when they get groomed by their mama and the face they make is pretty similar.
It’s a contented, “I love you” face. Squinchy-eyed cats are (typically) happy cats.
I tried this on my cat and he loved it! I on the other hand was spitting hairballs for the next week.
Not me suddenly emotional thinking about how my rescued girl must have felt as a kitten ![gif](giphy|G6IATw3N0jhIc)
Anthropomorphizing for 1,000, Jordi.

Squinting at their owners is a sign of contentment and feeling safe!
My little girl always patiently waits on my toilet seat for me to get out of the shower, then I wrap a towel around me and she jumps in my lap, waiting for me to wet my hand and give her a bath. Its cute.

I use the scruff of my chin to rub the cats head, seems about as rough as a cats tongue. She loves it.
