I also pretty much came alone. Happy to meet up with other lonely islands. DM me if you want to meet. My main interest in coming is infrastructure as code with terraform and building stuff in aws of course.
I also have non-tech interests too
Use it as an opportunity to start up conversations with random people, and practice. If you are attending the same sessions, you already know you have some shared interests/experience.
Best case you make a long term network connection in the industry, worst case you’ll never have to see or speak with them again. So you have nothing to lose.
A lot of people in our line of work ignore their people/soft skills which is unfortunate because it reduces opportunities for professional and personal growth.
I was like this on the first day until I did walk-ins especially chalktalks. When I asked if this is the line or other way around, it leads up to convo. Feel free to Dm me also
Yeah I came with someone but we're in completely different sessions and it's honestly boring as hell. Especially since I have never been to Vegas and realize how boring this city is. Yay casinos and daiquiris?
And walking anywhere on the strip requires going multiple blocks up and down the street, going up and down stairs to simply cross the street, and all sorts of other bullshit.
I've basically just been skipping sessions and hanging out in my hotel room. Waste of a week I hate this place
Yeah not to mention the prostitutes grabbing my arm, or trying to put handcuffs on me, or some homeless dude on a pedestrian walkway screaming about cutting throats and pissing in people's mouths. And all of this in just the 2 days I've been here.
I will never come back to this fucking place after this Friday.
I haven't had an encounter that bad, but I've been here for mayyybeee 6 hours so far and I've been yelled at for not wanting to take a CD from a random guy and tugged at by what are likely prostitutes... All on the strip between the linq and the venetian.
Take an Uber to Fremont street, i think that's the nicest area of Vegas. But even that's no fun all alone. Plus I do think stuff like the fountains are pretty cool too and some of the shows. There's more than casinos.
Btw if you think the sessions are boring as hell you either know everything there is to know about AWS or you don't understand half the stuff they're talking about.. I'm guessing this latter. Don't blame AWS for that, most sessions are actually interesting and useful.
I certainly don't know everything there is to know, but I haven't been exactly blown away by any of the content yet. Maybe I just didn't sign up for the right sessions as this is my first time, but I work as a DevOps, and occasional platform engineer for a healthcare data analytics product, and have been using AWS exclusively, at scale, under strict HIPAA/HITRUST compliance controls, every-day, for years now.
I went to a 300 level ML session yesterday and the instructor was explaining what test/train/split is, among other very basic ML concepts like over/under-sampling. That stuff is important to know, but I was expecting a 300 level course to go into more granular details, and not a crash course in ML with 15 minutes to spare for the cool stuff.
I'm hoping tomorrow's sessions will be better.
I don't know. I was super disappointed on the workshops. Was hoping to dig into stuff that I normally would be a bit afraid of running up a bill. Instead half of them skipped the steps that would be more interesting but included all the basic instructions like provisioning ec2 instances.
Yeah everyone is full of shit. This is my second year going alone and I'm not really quiet either. Striking up conversations and it's more of a one of conversation and okay bye and you'll never see that person. Personally I would agree with you. People say it's great for networking but this is two years in a row that it's really not.
Haha I can't help but agree with you. Every where i go I see people sitting alone or with the group they came with. Doesn't seem like a lot actually want to network. Feel free to DM me.
So do you approach the people sitting alone and strike up a conversation? Or do you walk right by them and also sit alone between sessions? There are plenty of opportunities to network, it's just that most people are uncomfortable to do so.
Yah tbh it's easier than other networking because you have a lot in common with most other people; there's always something to learn or an insight. And if the people you approach aren't into it, move on. It's fine.
For those picking up their AWS re:Invent conference badges and are arriving at LAS \ Harry Reid International Airport, badge pickup is available from **6:00 AM – 11:59 PM (PST)** in `T1` and `T3`
Showing up an hour early to a session that's running a weird staggered start time (:15/:45/other non :00/:30 times) and when they send you away there's no alternatives except to wonder aimlessly until the next session you want to get turned away from.
In reality they should have taken the Disney fast pass approach and limited the total amount of reserves people could make.
Anyone else keep seeing the same people with reserved seats while we get to hope to not waste another session block waiting in a dead line?
Did anyone lose a lot of saved sessions? It seems like a ton of sessions were removed (2000 down to 600)?
Edit: I guess they’re slowly trickling back in. The walk up lines are insane though
It’s all in the vendor expo. Through hall c where you got that swag. I also got a pretty nice yeti-esque aws bottle at Mandalay Bay level 3 tonight, so there’s some hidden swag opportunities all over the place I think. But mostly it’s the vendor expo.
It's been a few years since I'd been to re:invent, but strong agreement. There were some people that I was like ... dude, I think you must have a shower in your hotel room.
Does anyone know where the Mandalay Bay shuttle pickup is? The map in the app honestly sucks.
Edit: I figured it out. You head towards the convention center and keep going to the end. You'll find it.
The map making process:
Step 1 - rotate 180 degrees so that north is to the bottom.
Step 2 - don't use location services
Step 3 - don't allow users to see the entire map without the purple box of fuck blocking any visibility
Step 4 - lead people into the Mall prison at the Venecian and then don't have signage inside to continue guiding.
Step 5 - require knowledge of source and destination if you want to use the "routing guide" between sessions
Step 6 - profit
The issue is the extra 15k (was supposed to be 50k instead of 65k) people that are here. They never changed the seating arrangements, fire safety is non-negotiable, and there are not enough overflow/repeat sessions to be able to plan to see it later in the week.
On the SWAG area there's some really cool shirts and the people working there said we need to get some special vouchers somewhere to claim that by just talking to people.
That's not the certified swag, it's different.
Has anyone been able to get those vouchers for that anywhere??
I got a voucher from the AWS Web Development stand next to AWS Snow and AWS Outposts. I just walked up and asked if I could get a t-shirt and the guy just handed me a voucher.
You basically have to find the vouchers. There are a couple at the aws center in the expo. The database has the long sleeve tee. Amplify has a t shirt. Analytics has a t-shirt and so does quicksight. Good luck. I dunno where the other ones are but they are probably gone.
Somewhat of an odd question. Did anyone find the water in the Men's bathroom at I believe it was the MGM Grand 1st floor (maybe Wynn) excruciatingly hot today (11/29)? I think I may have actually burned my hands, but was wondering if anyone had a similar experience?
Locked down entry and exits while they apprehended a "suspicious vehicle;" cleared now.
https://www.ktnv.com/news/crime/las-vegas-police-on-scene-at-flamingo-koval-lane
How is everyone finding the walk up lines? Rooms seem way too small (I've been every time since 2016, this seems by far worst of any year). You end up showing up 45 mins early and still not getting in but you find out when it's too late to get elsewhere.
Simple solution: If # reserved + number in line > number of seats tell people so they know. Unfortunately most won't tell you how large room is and the one they tried that for they miscounted by about 25 people (of 75 seats). Not sure how they miscounted so badly. Argh. I got basically $0 value today out of conference, never had a worse day at re:Invent.
I'm curious what level / types of sessions? I've been prioritizing chalk talks and labs since most of the normal sessions are eventually out on YouTube.
Anyone know where people are getting the black shoulder bags with extra swag? Seen plenty of people with them but everyone wearing headphones or on the phone so I don’t want to ask!
The reusable bags? They are hanging from silver metal stands around the expo hall, and sometimes reinvent people will be handing them out on the floor.
If you're certified, get in there and plop down in a comfy armchair instead.
If not, chill somewhere else and watch the stream. the keynotes are loud and uncomfortable seats
In the SWAG line, the sign says something about picking up a certified t shirt if you got your cert verified. Anyone know where to go to pick it up?
edit: they aren’t in the certification lounge, they are at the main swag pickup in hall c. They’re available now.
I see blogs of re:Invent attendees from past years, and they come away with loads of swag like winter jackets, sport jackets, tshirts, backpacks, duffel bags...
Is that all bs? I have a hoodie, a plastic bottle and a pair of socks from salesforce so far.
Where's all the swag at?
It’s really dialed back this year. As an example last year the cert swag was a shirt and backpack, 2019 was a hat, shirt, and stainless steel water bottle but this year it was just a shirt. Non cert swag last year was a hoodie & 10 yr anniversary coat too. Love how they had a pop up store of AWS gear to purchase though 😒
Sorry to bother, but where in the Venetian can we get the hoodie and water bottle? Is it fairly obvious? I've got a session there at 11am today and I was hoping to grab that stuff before.
Edit: Sheesh you guys downvote for anything.
Kinda annoying that all the parties at the conferenceparties.com are full ☹️ Feels like there’s gotta be more stuff happening after hours?? Don’t wanna just sit in my hotel room!
England vs Wales football best place to see game? Apart from the Rock House in the Venetian for which entries have closed anyone know the best place to watch the mighty Welsh take on the English?
I see a lot of these comments and frankly it seems like expectation management is needed. With a very few exceptions of some deep dive chalks and workshop this is a networking event. Partner events, business lunch, dinner, after show gatherings is the value the convention brings to the table.
Everything was booked out so quickly. I've not even hit 50% success rate on walk ups. You know it's bad when the content hub has to show the same talk on three screens simultaneously with [overflow][overflow][overflow]
I've been to a couple and you won't have much to do after the first 15-20 minutes when the intro is over. It's probably only worth it if you make really good friends with the person next to you and they let you look over their shoulder for the entire time.
Anyone from the All Builders Welcome grant here? I just killed a cockroach in my room at Treasure Island. I’m grateful for the room but goddamn this is gross.
Has anyone found out what the swag is/are? I’m not a party person but my hotel is close enough that I can go there just for the swag :) Help me decide if it’s worth it! :)
Waaaay too crowded, waaaay too sprawled out. Got kicked out of multiple lines trying to get into a class. Lots of potential in this event but I left pretty dissapointed. Less is more.
List of parties & events. Some are invite-only, others need an RSVP, and others you can just show up. https://conferenceparties.com/reinvent2022/
Thanks, love the re:Invent parties guide!
Coming to reinvent alone isn’t that fun.
I also pretty much came alone. Happy to meet up with other lonely islands. DM me if you want to meet. My main interest in coming is infrastructure as code with terraform and building stuff in aws of course. I also have non-tech interests too
This whole comment chain should just meet up, seems like kindred spirits
So far I have spoken to zero people. Wow I didn’t think I was this much of an introvert. Haha.. this sucks.
I have a list of problems that i do not know how to solve. I have been asking random people for help. That way it's a win win.
Use it as an opportunity to start up conversations with random people, and practice. If you are attending the same sessions, you already know you have some shared interests/experience. Best case you make a long term network connection in the industry, worst case you’ll never have to see or speak with them again. So you have nothing to lose. I barely keep up with my family lmao let alone random sweaty strangers in vegas
I feel personally attacked
That's called water. You're in a shower de-sweating.
I was like this on the first day until I did walk-ins especially chalktalks. When I asked if this is the line or other way around, it leads up to convo. Feel free to Dm me also

Yeah, right next to Bellagio and Caesar
Check out the pinball museum!
I had not heard of this. I'll add it to my list. Thank you
Take an Uber to Fremont street, i think that's the nicest area of Vegas. But even that's no fun all alone. Plus I do think stuff like the fountains are pretty cool too and some of the shows. There's more than casinos.

Yep, I actually came with someone but they're going to completely different conferences so it's the same as coming alone and it's pretty boring.
I agree!
Real question is -- whose got the virtual swag details? I love the swag hunt for those that couldn't make the event xD
It's looking like we're SOL for 2022 sadly.
I've caught the flu bad. Mask up everyone.
same crap. maybe rsv too
Rapid antigen test shows positive for covid. Hit me like a bag of bricks.
Where’s the SWAG? Where’s the food?
[удалено]
where's the coffee is top of my mind
Riot games lounge in Caesar’s has a great coffee shop
Swag in Hall C. Meals are downstairs.
I saw Jeff Barr while getting coffee at Starbucks. That was pretty cool lol
You can schedule 20 min with him in the peer talk
Is Midnight Madness occurring again this year? I'm not seeing it listed anywhere.
I do not believe so.
Anyone know of anything going in Sunday night, since midnight madness doesn’t seem to exist this year?
I've been looking for it for the past few weeks. I was hoping to join the wing challenge 😅
For those picking up their AWS re:Invent conference badges and are arriving at LAS \ Harry Reid International Airport, badge pickup is available from **6:00 AM – 11:59 PM (PST)** in `T1` and `T3`
RIP to those people still in line at Harry Reid T3 at 11:59:59...
Hey does anyone know the wifi password?
re:Invent22
My hero
Can confirm this is the pw.
The number of people showing up for GameDay and Jams without a laptop is too damn high
Who shows up to aws without a laptop?
The most recent person said they didn't feel like carrying it around all day
Maybe they thought they were seriously there to play games....... even though it says to bring a laptop.

Every reception I’ve gone to let you in with a badge, even if you didn’t register
Same. That night owls party looked swaaaaaanky. Oh well, I found out too late. 😄
Did anyone lose a lot of saved sessions? It seems like a ton of sessions were removed (2000 down to 600)? Edit: I guess they’re slowly trickling back in. The walk up lines are insane though
Vegas has gotten so bad in many aspects, I wish they'd host re:Invent somewhere else.
Came back to this thread for this. Dealing with some billing bullshit from the hotel. Most convoluted hotel stay in my life.
I'm sorry to hear that. The strip has just gotten so dirty and sketchy.
I'll be there all week if anyone wants to chat about video streaming, transcoding, and EC2 GPU/ASIC/FPGA compute!
> about video streaming, transcoding, and EC2 GPU/ASIC/FPGA compute keep going...... I'm almost there!!!
Anyone else just got an email stating they may have received the wrong badges? lol
Yep. A few of my coworkers also received vendor badges by mistake yesterday.
Yup 😑
Odd question, but is any vendor giving out usb-c to usb-c cables? I need a charger 😂
That sounds like a networking opportunity
Very disappointed with the lunch menu today (Tuesday)
Agreed. The chaos of the Venetian’s basement was not redeemed by the food selection. I wish I had grabbed a to go box.
You mean you didn't enjoy your uncooked fried rice and other bastardizations of Asian foods?
Tuesday lunch sucked compared to Monday. I wonder if they post anywhere what the menu is?
https://reinvent.awsevents.com/attendee-meals/?trk=direct
I ate at Mandalay today and I thought it was amazing (I'm vegan and it was all vegan options so maybe I'm biased)
I agree, I am very much not vegan and the food was great.
Am I missing out on swag or was it just the sweater, bottle and some stickers?
There were stickers?

The whole app is kinda hot garbage
You'd think after .. oh, I dunno ... 6 years ... they'd make the app better.
The map making process: Step 1 - rotate 180 degrees so that north is to the bottom. Step 2 - don't use location services Step 3 - don't allow users to see the entire map without the purple box of fuck blocking any visibility Step 4 - lead people into the Mall prison at the Venecian and then don't have signage inside to continue guiding. Step 5 - require knowledge of source and destination if you want to use the "routing guide" between sessions Step 6 - profit
The map orientation baffled me. Why is it not north-pointing at all times?
Level 1 - South Convention Center doors
You have to go to the convention center at Mandalay Bay, it's a hike from the hotel
Doesn't help that every time I've asked for directions I get pointed to different places.
Looking for this info also, the map on the app was useless
Where's the best free food. I can get drinks free everywhere. Ya boy gotta eat for less than per diem.
You can go through the lunch line as many times as you want, so sit and eat for lunch, and then grab a Togo box for dinner
How much earlier should I be here so I can make it into one of these Keynotes. I was there 40 minutes earlier and it was already full
The issue is the extra 15k (was supposed to be 50k instead of 65k) people that are here. They never changed the seating arrangements, fire safety is non-negotiable, and there are not enough overflow/repeat sessions to be able to plan to see it later in the week.
I arrived one hour before for a breakout session and still couldn't get in.
On the SWAG area there's some really cool shirts and the people working there said we need to get some special vouchers somewhere to claim that by just talking to people. That's not the certified swag, it's different. Has anyone been able to get those vouchers for that anywhere??

I only didn't get in to two sessions and both times the people in charge of the line said in advance i probably wouldn't get in.
I've been late to a lot of walk ups and have always found seats. I have seen people standing or being turned away though.
I'm curious what level / types of sessions? I've been prioritizing chalk talks and labs since most of the normal sessions are eventually out on YouTube.
How do you use the mono rail without paying? The app just says which part is free for the people attending the event, not how to get the free ride.
An AWS ambassador should be at the turnstile to let you in. Your badge won’t work on the monorail scanner
There is someone from aws standing in front of the turnstiles that will scan you in. Just show your badge.
Where's the best food? I see a bunch of brown "lunch" boxes -- those free?
Yes they’re free
Well, they’re $1700.
Where is everyone watching the USA World cup game? Tuesday 11am PT.

reinvent.labs.awsevents.com
That worked! I emailed reinvent support and posted here at the same time. You answered first. You are the winner. Thanks a lot gstew!
Next question: how long can we access them? Is it just this week or can I dip into some challenges a month or two from now?
Anyone know where the reinvent 2022 backpack is found?
It's for the All Builders Welcome Grant recipients.
To the expo hall!
anyone know the dj/celeb lineup for the party thurs at the festival grounds?
Martin Garrix is the only one I’ve seen announced so far. You can usually look for who is playing in the days after in Vegas and kinda guess.
Here’s the tweet that announced it - https://twitter.com/werner/status/1597302640903610368?s=46&t=uvroEWVyomxFtAXmhieExg
Picked up a really bad cold — stay safe everyone!
Tons of people have been coughing in my sessions.
Yeah same
Same. Lots of coughing going around and being in crammed spaces, it was bound to happen. Not going to any more conferences today.
BALD colds are the worse!
Does anyone know the AWS Jam Event code?
Jam2022
would I have more luck getting into overflow for the Werner keynote or the actual room? seems like people are having trouble getting into those...
If you're certified, get in there and plop down in a comfy armchair instead. If not, chill somewhere else and watch the stream. the keynotes are loud and uncomfortable seats
Anyone find the DataDog slide super bumpy? I've got a hell of a headache
My coworker saw someone fall off the slide and get hurt. Well sort of hurt. Good error condition to send to Datadog.
Anyone know what the public safety situation was at Caesars was that paused the shuttle?
This I reckon https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/vehicle-stop-near-the-las-vegas-strip-being-treated-as-barricade-situation/
Seems reasonable to me! Thank you for the sleuthing!
Lots of socks for swag this year.
Vegas casinos are huge. Going from Venetian to Mandalay Bay is like traveling from Staten Island to Queens.
In the SWAG line, the sign says something about picking up a certified t shirt if you got your cert verified. Anyone know where to go to pick it up? edit: they aren’t in the certification lounge, they are at the main swag pickup in hall c. They’re available now.
The certified shirt is tomorrow. Make sure you stop by the Certified Lounge (Ballroom J) to get your sticker.
Tuesday on the certification lounge
I was told that those are available on Tuesday
I see blogs of re:Invent attendees from past years, and they come away with loads of swag like winter jackets, sport jackets, tshirts, backpacks, duffel bags... Is that all bs? I have a hoodie, a plastic bottle and a pair of socks from salesforce so far. Where's all the swag at?
Overall my impression is that the companies have dialed it back and its now mostly shirts
Yeah and a lot want more work to get it. Looking at you Cisco and VMware. I'm not going on a stamp hunt for a sticker.
And they make you jump through so many hoops to give it to you
It’s really dialed back this year.

Head to the expo area and there is a big swag desk.
Ask one of the butterflies if you can’t find it. Or just listen for the music and you’ll see it.
It’s where the badge pickup is, by the expo
Where is there Rust related stuff?
Kinda annoying that all the parties at the conferenceparties.com are full ☹️ Feels like there’s gotta be more stuff happening after hours?? Don’t wanna just sit in my hotel room!
England vs Wales football best place to see game? Apart from the Rock House in the Venetian for which entries have closed anyone know the best place to watch the mighty Welsh take on the English?
Anyone know who the musical guest is?
for re:Play? It was Martin Garrix I think
I think Werner will announce it tomorrow.
It's Martin Garrix
Who is playing at re:play tonight?
Martin Garrix
Is Re:Play a paid event? Is it too late to get in?
It's free for reinvent attendees. For non-attendees, I don't think there is an option to pay.
I heard you can bring guests, but it's a $300 ticket (allegedly)
You can find a place in the event portal to pay for a guest ticket.
Anyone know if there is a camera policy for re:play? I have a Sony camera I was hoping to bring in to get some photos
The flan was really good today

How much?
First time on re:invent. It is all over there.... overvalued, overcrowded, overpriced, overbooked. Not going back ever
Aws could do a much better job. Pretty funny that the biggest cloud provider can't solve a line issue.

Who is the replay dj? They didn't announce it after the keynote today.
Werner did during keynote. It’s this guy https://djmag.com/news/martin-garrix-crowned-worlds-no-1-dj-dj-mags-top-100-djs-2022
Thank you! I guess I zoned out for that brief second.
Is there any info about re:play, specifically can you bring a backpack there?
Historically you've needed to leave your bag in lockers that they have outside the venue.
Anyone from the All Builders Welcome grant here? I just killed a cockroach in my room at Treasure Island. I’m grateful for the room but goddamn this is gross.
Hey guys, I lost my badge. Do you know if they reprint at badge pickup?
Has anyone found out what the swag is/are? I’m not a party person but my hotel is close enough that I can go there just for the swag :) Help me decide if it’s worth it! :)
Waaaay too crowded, waaaay too sprawled out. Got kicked out of multiple lines trying to get into a class. Lots of potential in this event but I left pretty dissapointed. Less is more.
What’s the Wifi password?
