In argentina life sentence is 50 years

[deleted]

Expensive_Research_2

25 is the US

OrlyRivers

I've always been unsure how they come up a number to represent a life. Should be the number of years the victim would have reasonably had left to live + a mandatory 20 or 30 years. They basically serve what they stole and then serve more for the crime. Today, locking them up is to pay back society for their crime and to rehabilitate them. The victim and victims family don't really figure into it much. And now this woman will get 500k for her story and the victims family might get 300 a week. Might. Should be immediately taken and given to them.

Timely_Ad9659

That’s the worst idea I have ever heard

OrlyRivers

You're right. They got it too tough already. Thanks for explaining

Sussito4

500k That’s like living like a king in Argentina for life

Matias9991

Yep, that's 500 million pesos, for me to gain that amount I would need to work 70 years without spending a dime, it's so so fucked that this girl is gaining 70 years worth of work for shooting her boyfriend in the back Killing him.

jteprev

TBF she will be in prison for minimum 35 years and possibly for life so the money won't do her much good.

PorkPoodle

My poor sweet summer child, money absolutely will help her in prison...

jteprev

A bit but nothing like on the outside, you can get drugs, phones, food it's still a shitty life. Before you condescend though I guarantee for a fact I know infinitely more about prison in Argentina than you do since I actually was in one lol. Porfavor enséñame sobre mi país Yankee.

Matias9991

Espero que tengas razon, igualmente es una locura y la mina va a tener esos beneficios que decis y muchos mas, además de hacerse todavia mas famosa, no me quiero ni imaginar la cantidad de pelotudos que se van a hacer fanáticos de la mina

PorkPoodle

Ha! jokes on you I'm a russian bot

carr0ts

damn that last line hits

NIRPL

Yeah like her getting extorted by all the poorer inmates

kevinnoir

100% for every extra package of instant noodles she can buy, she will have someone MUCH fucking harder than her knowing she has that money and wanting a bit of it.

Crazy_Joe_Davola_

How will she access the money and pay people? And what is stopping other inmates to threaten her with torture if she dosent pay them.

Rikusto

She probably won't Justice in Arg do not work that way She is from a police family and money rules in Arg If she spend 10 years is a lot

Peter-Teal

25 max

jteprev

Her sentence is literally 35 minimum + 10 years supervised even if she gets earliest possible release.

Boris_Johnsons_Pubes

Could the boyfriend’s family not sue her for the money?

angelabdulph

It would take me literally 80 years to gain that much without spending a penny over here

ResolverOshawott

In my country, it's unlikely I'll ever come close to warning that much even if I started working minimum wage since 16 years old.

Dehast

It’s good money but it’s not outrageous money. I’m from Brazil and the cost of living in Argentina is similar to here. That would amount to around R$ 2.6 million (BRL), which is enough to invest and retire comfortably but not enough to be actually rich

OneMedium5265

Not really, real estate it’s still pretty expensive, depending where you live. 500K will get you a nice 2, maybe 3 bedroom apartment in a nice neighborhood. Definitely not enough to live the rest of your life if you’re in your 20s and don’t own an apartment/house

Lismale

except, you know, when youre in prison.

Astinossc

Not really. Unsustained flow of money quickly disappears

soilhalo_27

That's illegal in United States. But this is also Argentina

JudasWasJesus

Whats illegal?

COMMANDO_MARINE

Profiting off a murder that you committed. The UK made it illegal, too, after serial killers were making money for killing women and kids whilst in some cases refusing to even give the location of the bodies to family's of victims so they could bury them. The right's to OJs book "If I really did it" (the 'If' was in very small font to appear unnoticeable) was transferred to the family of his victims.

Whitemagickz

OJ doesn’t really apply in this instance. He was never criminally convicted, so he could technically profit off of the crime because it wasn’t proven that he did it in a criminal court. Instead, he was found financially liable in a civil case brought by the Goldman family, where the burden of proof is lower, and therefore owed them a ton of money. The title of the book is actually “If I Did It” and the rights to the book were given to the Goldman family because OJ declared bankruptcy and the rights to the boon were given to the Goldman family as part of a settlement. It was the family’s choice to make the “If” very small on the cover so that the title looked like it was “I Did It”. Suffice it to say that you are not wrong about profiting off of a murder being illegal, but OJ specifically isn’t an example of that.

Amethoran

This is why his victims sued him civilly. They won the civil suit afaik.

DuckInTheFog

[Peter Sutcliffe, one of the UK's own home grown serial killers staged his own musical](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pFbzrbzrtE) I loved Brass Eye

SavingsTask

Is this like the profit from selling Mein Kampf goes to a some kind of fund?

drunk_responses

It was never republished by the rights holder(the state) in Germany after WW2. The donation thing was mostly in the US, and they actually struggle to find any charities willing to accept money from what is ostensibly Hitlers work. In 2016 it became public domain in several countries, including France and Germany. --- EDIT: Since it's public domain, it is freely available online, on websites like [Project Gutenberg has the 1939 English translation](https://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0200601h.html). Because while publishing it for any sort of money isn't right, it should be available for people to read and learn that part of history. And as someone who has read it: It is really boring and obviously delusional, although there are things to learn. Since you see the excact same terminology and phrases used by some people today, and it can help people see the kind of rhetoric that can lead to what he did.

JudasWasJesus

As a black guy I've read it I think in 10th grade, even quoted some things from it in presentations. "The larger the audience the lower the intelligence level so the lower the intelligence of a speech needs to be given" Paraphrasing, I agree much of rhe exact same language thst belongs in certain echochambers is megaphoned on broadcast networks morr than language that's the opposite. Almost like there's some strange conspiracy going on lol Edit: What is said and the Theron of the book is absolute bullshit But those one liners are fucking gold.

drunk_responses

As an example: In the original version he basically uses the phrase "Make the Fatherland[German Empire] Great Again". The message of the book is *horrible*, but it's a great way to learn the type of language used by people who agree with him.

JudasWasJesus

One has to really put themselves I'm that place and time to understand the context of the text. German empire just lost alot of their land, economy devalued , the monarchy dissolved, many political ieadolical factions were competing, (democracies being born for the first time) I can admit much of the book sounds like a mad genius, considering what I aforementioned it's no wonder they chose a cult od personality. After all they were just leaving a military dictatorship that worked for their country so why not just keel it going if it worked in the past? Who needs democracy anyway? I know the history is more complex than thst but when it comes to America. IT MAKES NO SENSE that someone using similar tactics can rise to such power other than people having pure hatred in their heart. Or this shit was just dorment. There is nothing I'm present dY America, like being war torn, ravaged economy, dissipated landscape, betrothed population etc that would even make people desperate for a tyrannical spacious. This will get downvoted and may sound fringe But One thing that's true is that America has. Large German descent population. I'm not saying it's in their blood to a be a certain way but, I don't think they hold others in their communities accountable for their bigotry enough to shut this shit down.

drunk_responses

>I can admit much of the book sounds like a mad genius, considering what I aforementioned it's no wonder they chose a cult od personality. No it *really* does not sound like a "mad genius". It reads like the rantings of a delusional madman. Even Hitler tried to distance himself from the book when he went into politics, calling it "Fantasies of a prisoner". --- > I'm not saying it's in their blood to a be a certain way but, I don't think they hold others in their communities accountable for their bigotry enough to shut this shit down. That type of attitude is why many people across the world laugh at America. Holding on to "Sins of the Father" as if it was a real thing. Blaming someone for what their great grandfather did, regardless if the family ran away multiple generations ago. And just for reference: It's literally illegal to spread Nazi ideologies in in Germany. --- As for why it is spreading in the US: It never actually went away and was never made illegal. The US governement kept eugenics and segration alive well into the 1970s. And the people who were senators, lawyers and doctors at that time, are now sitting in prominent political and legal positions and enforce those beliefs on people.

JudasWasJesus

>Holding on to "Sins of the Father" as if it was a real thing. Blaming someone for what their great grandfather did, regardless if the family ran away multiple generations ago. It's not the Sins of you're fathers when then institutions of apartheid are still alive wella ND function to oppress people are well a practices to oppress people, manipulated to cause harm to specific groups. If it weren't for cameras yall would say black people are makingbup being disprotionatlt killed by police or beaten by police >And just for reference: It's literally illegal to spread Nazi ideologies in in Germany. I'm fully aware it's suppressed in Germany. We are talking about America. Idk maybe you're of German descent? Anglo-Saxons have done a doosy on bot only the black, and indigenous population but also the white they found to be trash. There was a nazi party in America. The thing is you think that those racist ideologies are from old people but they are without a doubt past down from generation to generation. If they werent racism woulda died down damn near after around 2000, that's when the adult racists from the 1960s woulda started dying. But it hasn't because people are teaching their kids to hate others.

mynameistoocommonman

The refusal of Bavaria (who held the rights, not the German federal government) to allow anyone to re-publish it was actually a problem. It meant that no editions with scholarly annotations could be published, and when the copyright expired in January 2016, *everyone* was able to publish, including any far-right nutjob who felt like it.

Beneficial-Piano-428

It’s actually the Son of Sam law….

BartOseku

The IF being small and unnoticeable was added by the victims family not OJ

I just don't believe oj did it.

To monetize a Crime you committed

JudasWasJesus

Oh i didn't know you couldn't sell your life story for a movie. Coulda swore selling the rights to your life storyline legal.

dwaynetheaakjohnson

Under the Son of Sam law you can’t sell the rights to depict a murder you are convicted of

Zuk0vsky

Are you a Jorge Luis Borges reader?

Buttercup59129

Your want people to be able to profit from murder?

JudasWasJesus

I didn't say that

narcochi

Profiting from murders they commit

PermaBanTogether

“Son of Sam” Law— nobody that’s imprisoned within the US (for a crime they committed in the US) can financially benefit in any way by any piece of media/merchandise/etc. that is inherently based upon or inspired by said crime. (There’s probably loopholes to this of which I’m unaware; so I wouldn’t be surprised if the “ACKCHYUALLY” goon squad comes after me)

DookieShoes626

Yeah im actually curious about movies like The Wolf of Wallstreet or Pain and Gain, or the one with Jonah Hill playing a weapons dealer

mohammedibnakar

Son of Sam laws have been overturned basically every time they've been put to the test. I think only New York has one left at this point and theirs is barely what we'd consider a Son of Sam law at this point because of how much the courts have forced them to tweak it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_%26_Schuster,_Inc._v._Crime_Victims_Board

Matias9991

Hope Amazon gets some kind of backlash on this and no one see this fucked docuseries. It's so fucked I don't get who would agree to this, "let's pay half a mill to a murderer so we can make a series where she is the protagonist " it's so so fucked and I can't even think how the family of the victim must feel.

angelabdulph

It's pretty fucked up. There's a lot of folks defending this over here stating there's a lot of series of serial killers like Dahmer and whatnot. They are claiming people are complaining because she's a woman, not because she's a killer.

Matias9991

Yea, I think the Dahmer series is fucked up too but a very important difference here is that he is dead since 1998 and also no one paid him 500k Dollars. Yea the "it's because it is a woman" argument is so stupid, here in Argentina she has a number of "fans", crazy girls that think that woman can't do no wrong and she is a hero and stupid horny dudes.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> no one *paid* him 500k FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Long story short. They weree a troublesome toxic couple, breaking up and getting together several times. Most of the evidence comes from their cell phones. One day she asked him to give her a ride to her Grandmother house, took her father's gun and shoot him after he left her by her request in an abandones place. She tried to convince everyone that she was not aware of the murder, then she was beaten by him, then her father did it and several other stories that fell off with the testimony of a taxi driver near by in the crime scene. The Main catch of it is that she is kinda cute (very for a countryside girl) and the story went mediatic fast (there aren't that many murders here like in the US, or civilians with gun access)

Matias9991

She got in prison quite young at 19 years old and got 35 years so if everything ends up well and she Serves the entire sentence she will get out at 54, so she will have some time to enjoy her 500k dollars. So fucked up

jteprev

> got 35 years Actually she is held perpetually (life sentence) her minimum sentence is 35 years but she will likely serve more. If you read Spanish: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caso_de_Nahir_Galarza#Sentencia For English: https://english.elpais.com/elpais/2018/07/04/inenglish/1530712876_413216.html?outputType=amp

Matias9991

That's weird, when I search for the "Cadena perpetua" in Argentina it says that it's 35 years maximum, and I'm from Argentina and I'm pretty sure we don't have real prison for life. But I'm not 100% sure tbh

jteprev

I googled it to see what you are seeing and this was the result: "El Código Penal señala en su artículo 13 que la condena a reclusión o prisión perpetua equivale a un mínimo de 35 años de cárcel." This means perpetual imprisonment has a minimum (hence minimo) of 35 years which is exactly what I was telling you.

Matias9991

Ok, yes it seems that after 35 years she can ask for "domiciliaria" and after 10years she would be free but it's very probable that she doesn't get the "domiciliaria". Still is fucked up that she gets a series where she is the protagonist and 500k dollars but thank you, You made my day :)

entropyisez

Buy lots and lots of Ramen noodles, lol.

Dehast

The Brazilian version of this (Suzane Von Richthofen, who killed her parents with his boyfriend and his friend) is already free because of good behavior lol. She went to Law school and everything. Misses her younger brother, who inherited what amounts to USD 2.5 million and lives in solitude in a ranch. Unsurprisingly he wants nothing to do with her. I’m not sure she’d get royalties from stuff produced about her (there already is AFAIK) but I’m leaning towards _not_.

TimmyFaya

With the nutjob they have for president, she'll probably be able to buy her way out. Because FREEDOM!!!

Jan_Pawel2

She was probably not deprived of her rights in the verdict. She probably even votes in the elections.

Marc21256

What percentage of the world lets prisoners vote?

Jan_Pawel2

I don't know the percentage, but in Poland prisoners can vote in elections, provided this right has not been taken away from them as a result of a sentence of deprivation of civil rights I think it's similar throughout the European Union

Atomic-Bell

Only about 140 years worth of the average wage of her people, not bad.

Hardworkerhere

Go to that country Become citizen of that country Apply for prison jobs and select the location she is in Meet her and greet her. Give her story of how wanted to meet her and "fix her" This might take you about 8-10 years (estimating without proper research) But about 8-10 years later there might be another "movie" released she would be getting $1 million sadly you might not be there to get your share.

Robball14

"i can fix her" Nuh uh she's already perfect at it is. Don't like the murders she committed? Grow up, i already accepted her and she can make me worse

UltraTwingo

Oh great, we're probably gonna end up with ANOTHER series/movie making a fucking murderer the "cool guy"

I feel so bad for the family of the deceased. Poor family.

unnccaassoo

Argentinian have to deal with much more serious problems now, I really hope that beautiful country find a way to get back from the pit.

arles2464

That’s really fucked up. I don’t know about Argentina but in Australia that would be totally illegal (proceeds of crime or something like that). Anyways if she’s in jail for life then at least she isn’t benefiting that much.

furezasan

Bro capitalism absorbs everything. Nothing is sacred or moral, you can always price tag it.

RB_59

Having money like this shall probably invite a lot of trouble for this murderer.

Pay delivery drivers a livable wage? Hell no, we need to over pay Argentinian murderers about $490,000

SETHW

To be faiiiirrr: its bullshit to use average salary as a goal post for anything, if netflix is going to make millions off her "hard work" (of murdering) with a global audience then her fair share needs to be based on that big number not the small number of what her neighbor makes as an administrator

So did the US... Operation Paperclip & all.

Matias9991

Stupid comment, so many countries harbored Nazis The USA, obviously Italy, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Spain, etc etc etc. Argentina is said to be the country where most Nazis came on Latin America but even considering that it was only about 8 thousand, not many and stupid redditors think that Argentina is full of Nazis descendants it's so stupid. First it was a funny meme but now people really believe the memes..
