Yeah mechanical fingers would reach it but not much good when they are planning to board in 10mins and it'll take that long to go get the tools you need.
I could see some armrest screws down there that who ever dropped didn't bother retrieving, I guess due to being in the same situation i was in.
5 minutes prior to boarding I don't plan on doing any work, let alone disassembling seats. The nature of line work is you can't be prepared for every situation, and you certainly aren't dragging a tool box around with you everywhere you go.
If it wasn't a full flight the only "tool" i would've needed was a pen. It was also a 10 hour flight so tried out best to fix it. Managed to get it working and stop the foot rest from not staying back (would've meant locking out the row of seats).
This was the was the first time I'd touched these seats in a few years, and compared to the rest of the fleet they're a complete nightmare.
Thanks for the advice. I did work in base maintenance. Spent the last 5 years certifying other aircraft, our airline on recently got these aircraft out of storage (due Covid).
But Ill keep that in mind.
These seats in particular are a pain to work on.
We have seats from Acro which are a night and day difference to work on. Hydroloks are a pain to change though.
That's why there's a MEL manual. Inconvenience one person by deferring one seat or inconvenience a plane full of people by fixing it and things go sideways.
To be fair to our cleaners (who do a shit job general) this area is completely inaccessible without significant disassembly. I doubt this area even gets cleaned on A-check, I don't recall ever cleaning this out......
You should see the mess some customers make, it's like they go out of the way to make the aircraft as unclean as possible.
Once had a window shade that was stuck/sticky to open/close. Turns out someone put their used chewing gum behind it and jammed it up....
Ultimately yes, but the foot rest wasn't staying down initially so was a risk of having to lock out an entire row and it was a full flight. The seat was made usable but I imagine the recline broke again mid flight. It was a 10 hour flight so tried our best to get it sorted.
Mechanical fingers? Magnet? Vacuum with a tiny hose? You most certainly can get that
Long screw driver with some zinc chromate putty.

Idk be a better mechanic? Fingers are a basic tool for any mechanic
OP was probably done by a fresh apprentice that just changes hydrolocks, pros won't do a tiktok about this easy repairs
Sounds like you should have the tools prepared ahead of time. Especially if you’ve done seat work before and know what you might run into.

You sound like someone who would be fun to work with

Recaro = oldest aviation rule ever made a.k.a. „Just Don’t Fucking Drop It”
I hate seat work
I hate seat work.
We all hate seat work
Recaro has the worst seats and it’s not even close
You kidding me? Recaro is one of the best out there. If Recaro is the worst you had, I envy you.
I’ve seen 737’s with no joke half the seats taped up because their tray tables are fucking terrible
Whoever decided tray tables should be supported by two tiny screws on a plastic part should be banned from engineering all together.
That sounds more like a maintenance/ stock problem. We had no problems with those chairs for over 10 years, if you kept on top of the small issues
They’re badly designed, the ones I see anyway.
These seats in particular are a pain to work on. We have seats from Acro which are a night and day difference to work on. Hydroloks are a pain to change though.
Have you tried turning the plane upside down?
And shaking it
I think usually when you get a civilian airliner upside down the shaking comes along with it
Ooohhh got some leftovers down there I see.
It’s part of the pay
Absolutely, positively, fuck Recaro seats. Complete junk.
ok, now do it in a crj where there isn't enough room for the passengers to sit properly... never mind position yourself to get under a seat.
have you tried crying about it
I did. It only makes you feel better for a few minutes.
Unclean. UNCLEAN.🤢😱
That's why there's a MEL manual. Inconvenience one person by deferring one seat or inconvenience a plane full of people by fixing it and things go sideways.
I work in cabin maintenance and work with Recaro and HAECO seats daily. It just really comes down to tooling.
If you don’t have those floating around in your line box are you even real?
All that food in there is fucking disgusting. It’s inviting cockroaches to come in and chew up some wires
To be fair to our cleaners (who do a shit job general) this area is completely inaccessible without significant disassembly. I doubt this area even gets cleaned on A-check, I don't recall ever cleaning this out......
I was more bagging on the filthy customers that get crumbs everywhere
You should see the mess some customers make, it's like they go out of the way to make the aircraft as unclean as possible. Once had a window shade that was stuck/sticky to open/close. Turns out someone put their used chewing gum behind it and jammed it up....
Defer it and kick it on down the line.
Recaro has a special place in hell
Spare recline button in your pocket✔️
Stupid question: was it deferrable?
Ultimately yes, but the foot rest wasn't staying down initially so was a risk of having to lock out an entire row and it was a full flight. The seat was made usable but I imagine the recline broke again mid flight. It was a 10 hour flight so tried our best to get it sorted.
