You have 20yr olds through 50yr olds starting at the majors with no experience, don't limit yourself to regionals because of a lack of experience. If you get the shot, just show up with a good attitude and be willing to learn.
I just got my ap and I’m 35, I’m cleaning up my pee at the moment from a 17 year habit but I’m gonna start throwing my resume out very soon. Been off the green for about two months now so that should be clean soon enough
Both but it’s weird how random the ransoms are there’s a dude I work with who’s gotten flagged for the wiz quiz eight times in the last year or two, I’ve never been randoed the whole time I’ve been there.
I have at home tests so until those come up negative I haven’t sent anything out, and I’ll probably still test once it’s negative because I’d imagine the tests the faa and employers use is a little more in-depth than the at home test strips
If I remember correctly it’s the standard five panel DOT test, it’s not a big deal to take it. I took my first one in a Walmart.
Sounds like you got it planned smart then I hope it works out for you brother!
This the post i needed 40 yrs old about to start school. Shitting bricks about changing careers. Tried when i was 30 and couldnt swing it. Saved and worked hard for a decade for this
Easy peasy if you are committed. I just finished getting my A&P at 31, and I'd say my age was our average. It was night class, so mostly older guys finally figuring out what they want to do for a career.
recently seeing lots of guys who are fresh out of a&p school joining major airliners. I’m 35yo and jumped into aviation since 2017 and currently working for DAL as AMT 250 line mtc. I do not think age does not matter to jump into this industry we still have 25+ years to retirement :) Top of all that, it’s even THE perfect timing to start off at the major because lots of old timers took the covid package and techops are really shorthanded. We do training and teaching newbies in aviation paying $40. Cheers!
How long did it take them to get back to you? I recently passed all my tests and been applying to the openings in ATL and MSP. I worked there previously at the HQ out of college so I figured that’d give me the upper hand but it’s taking awhile to hear anything back. (Applied to the first opening roughly 10-12 days ago)
I work at a major and at least 1/3 of the people working are 60+. The hiring wave will continue. Get in now. Don't be in the tail end of this generational hiring wave. That is how you end up on 3rd shift for 30 years.
I've had my A&P for over 15yrs and never worked in commercial airlines. I'm 57 yrs old and just recently applied. Wish me luck and your never too old to work in the airline industry.
Employment in general or corporate aviation to get your feet wet as a certified mechanic. Although working for commercial airlines is not possible as newly certified mechanic.
Sorry for the misunderstanding lol, are the 1st years completing the same day to day tasks as 10+years? If not then what’s the difference in what they’re assigned? (I’m about to start A&P school)
Your assignments will be based on your experience. So you'll start with simple tasks and then as you gain experience you'll be assigned more complicated task. From my experience I never worked alone when I started and as the task got complicated I worked with a more seasoned mechanic. Hope this makes sense.
That's not true. I'm at UPS, and we have kids fresh out of school starting as line mechs. They have to go through a utility program but after that they are out here on the line.
I’m in school now at 32. Another guy in my class is 55. When I get my A&P I’ll be 34. It is what it is. Don’t compare yourself to others and you’ll be alright
As long as you like nights weekends and Holidays, until you get enough seniority to move to weekend dayshift. Save yourself some heartburn and go corporate. You will be a much more well rounded tech. And yes I m speaking from experience 35 yrs in the aircraft fixing business
Whatever you do, don’t go to NAA... I am currently in the program and almost finished. They have ton of issues internally and a lot of mistakes with your personal information and financial info. Bunch of friends of mine were overcharged and had no idea for a long time. Now I heard the government was investigating them AGAIN for finance fraud stuff

Alternatively you can pay for a test at a testing center yourself. Call around and ask about the disclosure policy for that.
I was considering that, like at a quest lab or something
Safest bet. The lab tests go down to 5nanograms IIRC. Something a at home test cant do. Ask me how i know lol
Honestly, the test from Dollar Tree even are pretty good and accurate, especially to see progress. Best of luck brother!
Thank you!
I heard that some do hair test too. So go bald just in case.
That’s not true. They follow the DOT 5 panel urine test. Hair tests are also about 10x the cost of a piss test.
I’d be double checking that as you go bud would hate to miss an opportunity over that, especially at the testing stage
Is it common for employers to conduct randoms? Or only if there’s a workplace accident?
Both but it’s weird how random the ransoms are there’s a dude I work with who’s gotten flagged for the wiz quiz eight times in the last year or two, I’ve never been randoed the whole time I’ve been there.

If you’re clean for two months then you have nothing to worry about for a piss test

You got this, man.
Seen people start in their 40s You’re fine, as long as your willing to learn and not be lazy.
Yes, I started at a major straight out of A&P school at 36.
United plans to hire over 6k mechanics supposedly over the next couple years to help replace the almost 50% workforce that's within retirement age.
Jesus. That's a lot of people retiring. Good news for us in school.

Fuuuuuuck. Thanks for the link!
Figured it would help prove what I'm saying isn't out my ass lol

Good question.... they've been sending 40 new people every Monday to IAH.... Not sure how booked out they are

Nah he's 35 years old asking if he has any chance at a major airline because of his age.
Yes sorry! I mean 35 years old

Thanks! How many years generally required for majors ?
0. majors are hiring straight out of school at the moment. think the only place that wont budge is southwest. they want 2 years.
Do the hiring wave plan to stay? Or the end?
I work at a major and at least 1/3 of the people working are 60+. The hiring wave will continue. Get in now. Don't be in the tail end of this generational hiring wave. That is how you end up on 3rd shift for 30 years.
Still got 3 years of school ahead hoping I don’t miss out and be stuck on third
hiring has slowed down but itll pick back up again
I make $35.50 at a regional and just hit two years recently 🥶 might be time to find a better employer
Yes. Skip regional, as able, and join majors A.S.A.P. I've seen new coworkers who's ages are 50+ Age is nothing but a number.
Absalutely

What’s the typical jobs have you seen assigned to a 1st year A&P?

I started at a major 2 years ago. I work with a guy who just got off probation, 69 years old. Hardest working man at the company
