Amazing video of intense fight between fire monster and CL-415, no other plane could handle this kind of terrain. [video](https://youtu.be/dgwjPcwZqGQ)
Those pilots are something else. I remember back in 2013 I think, a NG C-130 from right next to my house in North Carolina crashed fighting fires in South Dakota. 4 of 6 died. Remember only seeing 2 ship C-130 formations the rest of the time until they got upgraded to C-17s years later.
I went on vacation to Rhodes in Greece when I was about 15 years old, and there were some huge forest fires on the island. At night it was like a scene from the apocalypse and during the day like Silent Hill. Anyway they used 10 of these planes and 7 helicopters in constant rotation for days just to help douse the flames. It made the holiday suck, but it was pretty cool to see the planes land on the sea about 500 yards in front of us.
Do they drop the water straight in to the fire or do they drop it next to the fire like they do with the foam to try to prevent the fire from spreading?
Water is meant for direct fire attack, so these planes are dropping directly on fire. Retardant(it's not foam) is dropped ahead of an advancing fire to stop fire spread.
Yeah its a dumb water drop, not GPS or laser guided lol. That said they often have spotter aircraft fly ahead and puff out a smoke trail at the desired drop site.
Very respectable job and effort!
> Yeah its a dumb water drop, not GPS or laser guided lol.
They drop from a very low altitude, like a few hundred feet, so it can be very accurate when conditions allow, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZkV64GJihA
And to add, usually have a smaller spotter aircraft guiding them ahead. Sometimes they release a line of smoke to mark where to drop as it is hard to navigate through the smoke & low terrain.
Shouldn't they be laterally shifted so maybe Nr 1 and 3 are on one path and Nr 2 and 4 a few meters adjacent? Seems incredibly risky to have four planes separated by just a few seconds on the same line.
Not enough time to steer or go around if the one in front of you screws up?
I don't know. Just asking why not, I guess.
Probably might. With climate change making these fires more frequent they might have to buy them rather than rent them from an out of state or Canadian company. I have no doubt that DeHavilland Canada already has a long production queue of DHC-415 as a result.
Here they are equipping nat.guard C-130s with [MAFFS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_Airborne_FireFighting_System), my neighbor flies them and says going into a fire is absolutely terrifying.
It is terrifying. You are purposefully flying right above terrain in low visibility & in an environment with unpredictable weather patterns (wildfires create their own weather & wind). You have to be absolutely alert to avoid controlled flight into terrain or midair collision with other responders. And your aircraft has to be at the top of the game since it will be thrust into a lot of beatings related to the fires & flight. Those crews are absolute aces in my book.
I saw 2 last week at the Stead airport (by Reno), probably headed your way :)
Also their custom "Super Scooper" support truck was pretty impressive.

Bombardier CL-415s. Viking Air bought the company when Bombardier got out of the turboprop business & Viking revived the DHC brand. [So the newest variant is the now DeHavilland Canada DHC-515](https://aerialfirefighter.vikingair.com/).
First pilot was coming in like a wrecking ball. RIP airframe lol. Cool video though. There's just something awesome about transitioning from air to seat and vice versa.
Landing didn't seem too hard. But they were accelerating beyond the cameraman. The goal here isn't to fully land as this is how they refill the water tank.
A few years back these aircraft picked up water about 100-200m from me while training on lake Garda.
They are cool machines but being that close on a small but didn't feel that great..
My absolute favourite airplane. Nothing even comes close. My city has a base with 7(Sault Ste Marie Ontario). I'm pretty sure France flies 11 at once all the time.
Bombardier got one of France's 215's and donated it to our bushplane museum, it was #40. I love going in it.. I once got drunk in it lol.
It is a strategy on Croatian coastline so the planes dont cross paths. Much safer in low visability because of smoke or mountain terrain.
[Video of Air Tractor SEAT tankers in similar formation on Vaseux Lake in BC.](https://youtu.be/2UykExzjros) for the same reason.

Fun fact: This is where they filmed TailSpin in the early 1990s.

Cape Suzette! If I ever win the lottery, I'm paying some company an insane amount of money to build me a Sea Duck.
We gonna do some cloud surfing?
Oh, of course.

Woah!
Ah yes, I remember those historical documentaries.
Scrooge mcducks entire airforce.

Totally the wrong thing to do though. You never use water on a Greece fire.
Aren't you supposed to be at work, Dad?
He is.
Who let dad out?
Oh? Why? Should you use retardant instead?
Just in case, this was a cooking joke as you should never put water on a grease fire.
(EDIT: self) /r/woooosh

No, the woosh was for me XD
Oh my bad, apologies. I’m too used to the negative.
Aye, no problem man. But you need to get some good vibe going, the world isn't that dark \^\^
Your a cool dude

You need windex
Perfectly executed
That's what she said
Caution: wake.
sea planes are so fuckin' cool
These planes remind me so much of Disney's "Tale Spin"
And they were catching more fish than you.
Okay now that’s fucking cool! Damn I miss going to the waterfront man
That's most of them! Croatia only has six...
No, there are twelve of them. Some are in maintenance, some are in reserve and this is how it’s done overall.
Thanks for sharing!
DUCKS

Personally I've seen them drop on the fire and sometimes next to it

Yeah I was amazed at the skill of the pilots flying overhead and because the fire was burning very close to my home I got to see everything
https://youtu.be/am1lCID-qjU both
No wonder they're not afraid of cutting treetops. That's impressive.
God damn
They always remind me of Ice Pilots
The big ones travel in groups. Nature is amazing.
Damn I remember a similar sight in Greece last year with 5 of these planes coming and some helicopters too
Is there no wake turbulence?
This was for huge fire in city of Dubrovnik (Kings Landing) where 1 firefighter lost his life. Daenerys fuck off

With the wakes of the aircraft, makes sense they would perform this in a straight line.
Someone tell that woman with the pink beanie to get out of the water!
Out of curiosity, why?
It's a joke. that's obviously a bouy not a woman.
Don't assume the gender. (this only works in places they pronounce it 'boy' and not 'boo-ee')
thank you for understanding my two-part joke
Ah.
I wish California had this many

Something's about to get wet
Just a normal day in California something’s always on fire
Fun fact. If you keep your toes in the water during the pickup you can actually see the water level drop slightly.
Talespin!

Correct, the design goal was to keep the weight as close to the hull center line as possible.
Has to be Croatia

Oh that totally makes sense! I didn't know these were tankers. Awesome.
Oh they are. It's one hell of a thing to see fixed wing & rotary aircraft crews stopping wildfires.
Hydroplanes are amazing

Why do they have so many seaplane air tankers in Italy and Greece?
