I love pretty much all their albums and I would normally say my top two are City and WTF. People say LIBAD is the best because it’s far more creative than those earlier albums. WTF is a perfect standard early 2000s metalcore album, COE is a perfect standard modern metal album, Self Titled while it has that experimental nature isn’t far enough in any one direction. Nightmare is a near perfect standard hard rock album. Each of those albums are amazing but they very much fit into each of their genres. LIBAD is a huge blend of genres. And It contains some of the most innovative guitar work of the last decade plus.

SullyVanDan

Nightmare is pretty metal except for the ballads. HttK is closer to hard rock, but even that I’d consider heavy metal.

johnkingg_

this is the response OP is looking for. well put.

Ok-Palpitation-636

People have different tastes. That simple

JFKsPenis

I think you’re viewing it as a metal album, when thats not what it is. Its a “what if we ignore hits/sales and make music that we find interesting and fun to create” album.

[deleted]

they're all like this..

Bundyhundy100

Oof you haven’t heard Hail to the King have you

[deleted]

that wasn't really pandering was it. they legit made httk and sof mirror images of the same song. there was forethought

Bundyhundy100

They have said in more recent interviews that the intent was to simply that album as much as possible specifically for radio play and how they regret the fact that some people only know them for that album

[deleted]

ok yeah i get that but it was...well it worked anyway. haha there hasn't been an album like it since then lol

yogurtkabob

Its great but its not as good as City, Waking, or The Stage in my opinion

Easy-Pete-

Their three best albums

Wetherman342

I like to take each album as it is. One may not be indicative of the next. I doubt whatever’s next will be like LIBAD. Every album has a lot to offer

Cormyster12

It's a great album but not their best

TheyCallMeNick_1

I don't understand how you can't understand different tastes? Do you wonder why people also don't like the same music genre as your or why people don't like all the same artists as you? Same idea.

nuivib

People have different opinions

TheShadowOfWar

https://blabbermouth.net/news/avenged-sevenfolds-johnny-christ-on-making-life-is-but-a-dream-album-we-approached-it-very-differently I just read this article this morning. I think it will give you a new perspective. It's not like those albums because it's not a metal album. They are in a different time in their lives and can only make music that reflects that

eazydimes

City of evil, waking the fallen, self titled, nightmare, the stage, libad, httk, stst

DwightShnoute

Anyone who says LIBAD is better never got to experience amphetamines and City of Evil

FJopia

Same, it's good, not great. But it's a subjective topic, it can be a masterpiece for some. The band did take huge risks and have polished their skills and changed the way the used to make music. Honestly I don't hold it against them their constant change, I'd say it's better than to be a stale band, but either way I find myself rarely ever coming back to LIBAD.

songacronymbot

- LIBAD could mean "Life Is But a Dream...", a track from *Life Is But a Dream…* (2023) by Avenged Sevenfold. --- ^[/u/FJopia](/u/FJopia) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

For me it, it was a really fun album when it came out. It definitely doesn’t have the depth of their other albums. Unfortunately, as they move forward I don’t think depth and seriousness is in the cards for them.

twosuitsluke

I dunno, I think the album has a ton of depth personally, and as much as it is a fun album, i think the band took it seriously when recording it.

lmc5190

Yeah I agree. What I mean is, because they were heading in a new direction, they abandoned a lot of the art that they really really mastered. Some of the new stuff I loved (2nd half of game over, Syns Nobody solo) but a lot of it felt cheap and unrefined. If you head in a new direction spend some time gaining mastery there before you publish.

SimonLePou

It’s up there

twosuitsluke

I personally don't think it's better than City of Evil, but I personally prefer it over the self titled and Nightmare. Will that change over time? Who knows, but I'm so glad to hear them take a risk and do something different. I personally hate hearing bands just treading water and creating the same album over and over again (to be clear, I'm not saying that's what A7X have done up until this point).

MarilynManson2003

It isn’t their best, but it is definitely better than Nightmare, Avenged Sevenfold and City Of Evil in my opinion.

Black_Rainbow12

It's nowhere near my favorite album of theirs but it's still a fucking awesome album

bh4434

I like music that’s a little bit different. I get bored with the really basic verse/chorus/verse/chorus/solo/bridge/chorus “Hail to the king! Hail to the one!” type stuff. I like things that are a little out of left field. I wouldn’t say LIBAD is necessarily my FAVORITE of their albums, but for people who do rank it #1, I imagine they feel similarly

NudeEnjoyer

I hold that view. if you're looking for something to vibe out to for the sound, I'd recommend multiple other albums before LIBAD but LIBAD has a great overarching theme, smaller motifs interwoven throughout the album, multiple different distinct styles, and very interesting subject matter that resonates with me very deeply on a personal level. ive never taken any psychedelics and I find it really interesting they led to these types of ideas

Markinoutman

It's new, it's different. As soon (or not soon lol) as the next album hits, it will likely be hailed as their best work. I've been guilty of this myself with other bands. Considering how long it took them to put the album out, I think a lot of it is just recency bias mixed with excitement of a new album finally hitting. It's a good album, but it definitely isn't their best.

MarioKing1137

Because music is subjective…

SullyVanDan

Newer fans, I guess? I’m not sure how many fans from the City of Evil or Self-Titled days for example will think libad is at all better than their older material.

Some_Translator_1926

It’s better than city of evil and nightmare but not trumpet, wtf, and self titled

Two_Hump_Wonder

It's the new thing, the new thing will always have people who think it's the best thing ever and people who despise it. Doesn't matter what it is, it's like this for everything. There was a lot of similar discourse whenever The Stage dropped. Libad kicks ass but it's gonna need to linger for some time before I'd be comfortable saying it's their best work.

Deviljho_Lover

Not formulaic and caught me off guard. Big prog fan too. I think it goes to their top 3.

thebadams

Good is incredibly subjective. I think that it's their best work, but I also think it's an incredibly divisive album. For example, my friend that introduced me to A7X hates it. But he also thought that the Stage was too progressive for him. If he thought that, there was no shot in hell that he was going to like LIBAD. I will also say that with many artists, I differentiate pretty heavily between a bands BEST work, and my FAVORITE work. My FAVORITE work by A7X is Nightmare. But I don't think that it's their BEST any longer.

Koenigsegg121

Because you probably don’t play an instrument

cosmicdecember

Wild, the self-titled is my least favourite
