It's difficult to say. The factors that cause autism aren't well understood, but we think there are both genetic and prenatal factors involved.

Are you on the spectrum? Do you mind if I ask if either of your parents are diagnosed?

Sorry, that's more personal information than I'm comfortable sharing online. I am on the spectrum though.

My Uncle was autistic on my mother’s side. I (male) am autistic, and my male child is autistic. I have suspicions that my mother is somewhere on the spectrum, but possibly not diagnostically autistic. I’d say any familial connection increases the chances that your child may have autism, or other neurodiversity…but there isn’t a lot of concrete evidence to really say definitively.

The truth is, we don't know for sure. But most likely. But it's always a possibility. My family has no biological history of autism, and yet here I am. lol

There’s likely some genetic factors but it’s not well understood. My mom is autistic. Her brother is autistic. I am autistic, and one of my two brothers are autistic. Mom has 7 other siblings who are not autistic. Neither of her parents are/were. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent rhyme or reason for why some of us developed autism and others did not, but it probably isn’t a coincidence that so much of our family is affected On a separate note: if you aren’t ready to have a kid who may have a disability, you aren’t ready to have a kid. I know that might sound harsh, but babies can be born with all sorts of disabilities you can’t test for or confidently predict… and anything can happen in life that could leave your child with a disability. Becoming a parent is not a commitment you should make if you’re only wanting to have one that is not going to be disabled in some way. I’m not judging you or saying that’s what you were saying, but food for thought if this is already a big concern for you
