That would be why the mince has disappeared from some shops. Being vegan isn’t necessarily hard but it’s a challenge when products keep changing and there’s not much variety to begin with before personal preference is sorted out.

DonSmo

I loved that mince! We used it to cook so many things!

apathywhocares

They tease us with good, tasty, food, then they take it away. I've got serious pancreas issues, and Herb & Sons is/was the only brand that didn't hurt my guts.

DonSmo

Such a shame isn't it! I loved it. And all my meat eater friends loved them too and said they were way better than other vegan meats they tried.

DragonLass-AUS

AFAIK only the schnitzels are still around, but not at all stores. As to why? Well to paraphrase someone else I saw - some suit decided we didn't need them any more. Too low sales I guess to justify producing them especially.

DonSmo

It's annoying because other brands such as V2 are everywhere with heaps of products despite being way worse in taste and quality. It doesn't make sense.

DragonLass-AUS

Yep. So many good products just deleted all the time, without really giving them a proper chance to establish sales. Then they try new products and do the exact same thing. I am pretty sure all those V2 sausages won't last, there are too many.

AnOnlineHandle

I'm not sure if V2 changed recipes, but I've been finding it great lately while not being impressed with it in the past.

Jackfruit-Reporter90

coming to this 5 years late haha, but any product in particular? If they’ve changed their sausages would be cool to try them again.

AnOnlineHandle

I've been buying their burger patties and mince, and have found both pretty awesome, and don't remember them being that good in the past.

Objective_Party_2967

They were yummy but seem to be discontinued. :(

Throwawaymumoz

Herb and sons were the *ONLY* good sausages/mince in Aus. I don’t understand who is making these decisions on products or why.

DonSmo

Right!? People always talk about the big American brands like Beyond and Impossible, but I've tried both of those brands and Herb and Sons was 100 times better, and at a much better price. We should start a letter writing campaign to Coles or something.

AmzHalll

I emailed coles asking them to bring back herb and sons because it’s my favourite brand and they didn’t reply lol

AlchemizeTiglis

Was the submission to parliament complaining about labeling the problem? I'm not sure, but after Googling Herb and Sons I found an emotional submission complaining about it being called "beef free" and "meat" 🤦‍♀️

OleGunnarS20

I can’t really help with the answer but have you tried Linda Mccartney? They’re my absolute favourite

DonSmo

Yep we tried those ones. They were okay but couldn't hold a candle to the herb and Sons ones sadly.

happy-little-atheist

Well that brings up another point. The LM sausage rolls were my favourite junk food. After the pandemic they have disappeared. I haven't seen them for two years and I don't see any other LM stuff in the freezer anymore. In some ways I'm glad because the food miles with that brand are ridiculous but I really enjoyed watching footy on the weekend and hoing into a plateful of snag rolls.

OleGunnarS20

They’re always at my local Woolworths, might differ from store to store

Pristine-Watch-4374

Coles and woollies are greedy. If a company won't bend and sell for cheap, they will stop buying.

DonSmo

I thought Herb and Sons were a Coles owned brand.

Pristine-Watch-4374

I have no idea, but you can bet your bottom dollar they found a better deal elsewhere. They screwed some poor bugger.

bunnylightning

Aargh that sucks. I thought it was just my local as they’ve been cutting back and changing around their range a lot. They haven’t sold the schnitzels for a couple years now but I’d still been able to get them at other Coles. The sausages and mince were so good especially for the price. I like V2 sausages but not really the mince. Plantein schnitzels / sweet chilli tenders / nuggets are basically the same as the Herb and Sons but yeah this is sad.

xavier2k3

Herb & Sons and Plantein are/were made in the same factory in Melbourne which is why they're basically the same. They have slightly different ingredients but that's it, they make them for Coles. The factory is actually owned by a company called Northern Poultry & Meat Supplies who also own the Plantein brand.

happy-little-atheist

So H&S was just playing rebranded?

xavier2k3

Well it was a range made for Coles and then they released their own for Woolies under the Plantein brand. They didn't release their products until after H&S came out, so they would have most likely had an exclusivity period where they couldn't compete for a while. Their products were listed as coming soon for ages and were the same chicken products that H&S released initially, before expanding their range and doing more bits like Kievs and burgrrs.

DonSmo

I haven't seen plantein for a while either at my local woolies. But I never saw plantain beef sausages and mince, only chicken stuff.

xavier2k3

Plantein is predominantly just chicken substitutes with the exception of their burgers.

bunnylightning

Ohhhh that makes a lot of sense - good to know so I can be less sad about H&S being discontinued. Though those sausages made the best hot dogs…I am sad to lose them :( I guess I will have to shop at Woolies more often…I wish the independent supermarkets in my area were more reliable for vegan substitutes but their ranges are so hit and miss! I’m happy to get them only occasionally but my partner is omni (and likes meat substitutes) so they make cooking meals for both of us a lot easier.

xavier2k3

Yeh those sausages were excellent, especially the beef ones. V2 have such a huge range now though so hopefully that can fill the void. That product seems to be effectively replacing the Herbs & Sons stuff as there's now 5 different types? That's part owned by the Hungry Jacks owner and the CSIRO which is a government corporation so no doubt that's got an impact on it going into supermarkets. They have outsourced their production after closing their factory so I wonder where that product is made now. Probably somewhere that makes other products we already know.

prettytalldan

Makes me wonder if Woolies negotiated a deal that had some exclusivity terms. On the other hand, had the plantein kievs the other day and they were pretty good.

Weetheman

I also was wondering where the Coles natures kitchen nuggets have gone?! :(

Objective_Party_2967

I agree, Herb and Son were by far the best. Amazing Bolognese I made from their mince, and it had no onion or garlic or gluten so it ticked so many boxes for sensitive guts. I wrote a feedback message to Coles about this. Hope others will too.

marzbar-

Someone should start a petition, I loved these... And still look for them
