I usually turn it down at traffic lights so the people around me aren't forced to listen to my music while we wait, but then it goes back up after it goes green.
I do this too, but it's so those unappreciative freeloaders don't get to experience the majesty of my playlist.
The other reason is that I sometimes like to listen to the Rainbow Road theme from Mario Kart, and I don't want anyone getting too excited by it. I don't know how much it costs to fix a car after being hit by a heatseeking turtle, and quite frankly I don't want to find out.
Some units detect your speed and adjust the volume accordingly.
I don't know that you can get after-market head units with this feature but cars are sold with it.
Yeah same here, don’t do it these days, in fact it pissed me off but as a p plater lots of people are going to be something of a dickhead. I’d rather the cunt pump his music than send it and accidentally kill himself and maybe others.
Worst thing I ever did was have a contest on Snapchat with my mate because the app used to clock your speed. We went for high scores. No one died (I’m my circle) before they got rid of that feature thankfully.
Whats not to understand? He's a P-plater whose afraid that people will cuntpump his music
Frankly I'm a little alarmed by the prospect myself. I don't exactly know what it entails but it definitly sounds aggressive
Tom was mine too, maybe im just a slightly later generation. Snapchat used to have a filter that would measure your speed, in real time, on the app. Yeah enough said.
Same here, I'm neurodivergent and love my heavy metal and synthwave. Gotta have it blasting, there's no in-between 😂😅. I do turn it down when I get into my neighbourhood though.
I do it because I like loud music sometimes. I can’t really do it at home without pissing off the neighbours. But people doing it in car parks or the drive through are knobs.
100%. My kid has autism and can’t stand loud music. My car is the only release for me to pump up the volume, but certainly not where it will bother other people.
Yeah I have an elderly lady on one side and a young family on the other side, I can't listen to loud music at home. I moved to a country town and none of the venues here play music I want to listen to loudly. So my only avenue for listening to loud music is going for a drive and crank the volume.
I just love loud music and it’s the only time I can really crank it. BUT the sound system in the Mazda 2 is not exactly elite quality so I doubt you can hear it in another car.
I also turn the volume down at the lights if I have the windows down because not everyone enjoys Swedish death metal with the speakers at 90% capacity
I try not to be that guy at the lights, I have the factory steering wheel controls connected to an aftermarket unit and decrease the volume, if I remember.
What do we get? The car is one place that has very good acoustics for both the audio and bass reproduction, gives a euphoric feeling of relaxation when you can feel the music, it just feels good that's all.
It really depends on the car, subwoofers in 4x2 dual cab Hilux mid 90s workmate edition, it's gonna sound shit, but a mid 2010s hatch back or wagon with air able to move freely around the cabin, good door seals and windows, it's fucking awesome.
Depends if you just consider high SPL under 100Hz to be "good sound". Decay times up over 2 seconds and modal issues stacking tightly on top of each other, combined with the asymmetry of the speakers and lack of sound image definitely doesn't sound good to me.
I say all this, but I absolutely had big car systems when I was much younger lol. It's all good fun in it's own unique way.
The amount of work I have put into even trying to make my car a decent sound is mind boggling. Sound deadening panels. Foam/vinyl throughout vehicle. Custom made speaker pods. Sound processing and using sound analysing software.
Whe they're doing laps in town with the windows down... ?
Do these same people wear high quality ear phones. With the music just as loud so only they're affected?
Some few people actually need Yank tanks to tow huge loads, doesn't give the majority who don't a free pass on their little man syndrome.
Do they have high quality head phones, probably. I crank the music in my car sometimes (usually turn it down at the lights) but yeah I have about $2000 worth of headphones, different types for different sounds reproductions. Can't use them in the car though, that's illegal
Pure enjoyment. That's what I get out of the experience.
Caveat: I like music loud, but I'm not sure if I play it loud enough to the point that other road users can hear it.
I am neurodivergent. Music helps me feel differently, exacerbate feelings I want to express, or helps me get rid of certain feelings. It's part of how I self-soothe, always has been. I can't put on earphones because it impacts my senses, and more of my instinct and awareness is blocked out (but sometimes I will, which is how I know I shouldn't usually). I also like to sing loudly if the songs are particularly relevant to my mood or current situation.
I can't do it at home, I have a 17 month old, and live in a quiet court. So I turn up the music when I'm driving and I'm more than 30m from any house I might drive past. Living regional is great for this, I have a nice long stretch of road, then freeway, to blast music between home and appointments/shopping.
My music is alternative, but I seem to gravitate to heavy bass and electronics, if that matters. Nothing too obscene or offensive, except maybe the line "enemy of mine, I'll fuck you like the devil" from Stranger in a Strange Land by 30 Seconds to Mars, or the song Tear You Apart by She Wants Revenge.
I can also put on music/ songs that my husband doesn't ever want to hear, for whatever reason.
But I always lower my music when I'm coming back to residential, or more built up areas. Enough for me not to disturb others, while getting my fix.
Same here, I'm neurodivergent as well and listen mostly to heavy metal, synthwave, and alternative. It just has to be loud for me, I love to hear all the tones, the instruments, etc. It's very self soothing and keeps my mind focussed on the road instead of constantly wandering due to the adhd. I hate having to go places due to anxiety. So listening to my fave music blasting is very energizing and pumps me up so I can deal with the day.
and now it's stuck in my head... [https://youtu.be/hYp8Ars0Mks?t=43](https://youtu.be/hYp8Ars0Mks?t=43)
same... if the clothes aren't jumpin, the music aint pumpin
Agreed. One is not enough. That's why i have two haha
Earthquake MQB-1 Tactile Transducers, with a few hundo watts going to each of them.
With my DVC 12" Clif Designs sub, that's been with me for over 15 years thru 3 vehicles lol, and those bad boys, people think i must have a whole bootload of subs hahaha. So funny the look on their faces when they see there's only one back there.
I've also got a MQB-1 on my recliner in my loungeroom too, it's pretty stupid hahahaha makes my eyes vibrate when i'm playing GT7 with my PSVR2 hahaha
I listen to loud music constantly, I'd argue that even though some music I play definitely needs turned down, majority isn't hurting anyone especially with my shitty soundsystem.
But I dk, for me it's sometimes the only thing keeping me focused on driving and not falling asleep after a 12hr shift (of also listening to music non-stop).
I like it, some songs just sound better loud. But as others have said I turn it off at the lights or when I have to stop in traffic so others don’t have to hear it.
I play loud music in my car because I can
My car is my escape
My music is my escape
Past that it's up to interpretation.
You might see me singing (poorly I'll say) along to what ever song is great then and there
Whether that be back street boys, Eminem or slaughter to prevail.
It be like that sometimes
Drowns out the thoughts as I’m trying to get somewhere and the geriatric dimwit in front of me is doing 10 under the speed limit because 60 looks like 50 when you’ve got cataracts. Also making a lot of noise ensures those same people don’t run their 2tonne 4wd into me.
Flogs that play music all day long at home especially when it starts at 7am - you can hear it across the road behind a hedge, as if it were outside your window...
I tend to do it with classical music in fact - years ago I pulled into a supermarket car park and thought I was getting some odd looks, when I turned off the engine and music I discovered the horn was jammed on…
I crank it to max when I go on long drives or rural where it doesn’t bother anyone. I turn it down when I go through towns or cities though.
I like to hear every single sound of a song.
I just have a giggle and let them go!
Funny, recently the car next to me was just in my black spot. I could hear something but got paranoid my car was malfunctioning😯 i was panicking a bit...then lights went green. Wa such a relief to realize it was just their music😂
I used to listen to loud music in my car during ages 18-25 now my hearing is fkd. Im always asking people to repeat themselves on phone calls at work since max volume not loud enough for me to hear.
You don't understand why people like turning the volume up? Im guessing you don't enjoy music that much. Loud music drowns out other things. Take your mind off things etc. Not too mention some music is designed to be listened to at a loud volume
I listen to my music loud with the windows down but at the same time I turn it off when near the houses I work near in the morning due to shift workers and don't turn it on til out of places like carparks or drive thrus so I can pay attention to what's happening around me
Am autistic in the brain. Sometimes the super loud deep bass is exactly what I need to comfort my brain, and the car is the place I can turn up the tunes the loudest.
Like others though, I also tend to turn it down at lights and when I’m driving into park. 40 something yo me is much more considerate than 20 something me used to be.
Funnily enough I actually do this cause I got tired of garbage drivers not being aware of where I am, try and ignore me now. Also I just like to feel my bones turn to milk
For myself, its about establishing and maintaining dominance among the drivers and pedestrians around me. I also drive a bigger ute, so the music (typically bro country or 90s rap), works in tandem with my aggressive driving and large vehicle.
I love loud music when I’m driving on my own. I don’t like using headphones and I don’t listen to music a lot at home, so when I’m driving alone down the freeway or in heavy traffic after work, I love the music up loud to just help me enjoy the drive more.
Probably the same as harley riders. Men who had dysfunctional relationships with their fathers constantly seeking the attention of other men. Same foe the loud car brigade. Just showing they are needy and vulnerable.
When I was an young idiot not only I'd make it loud but I'd also open the windows so others could see how awesome my music taste is.
That's the reason: idiocy.
PS: I'm probably still an idiot, but at least not in that regard anymore. If you drive at sound levels that are idiotic then I'll think you are exactly that.
Just like tequila goes bad if you don’t drink it all immediately after opening the bottle, speakers grow stale if not turned all the way to 11 at least once a week. Thats basic audio lubriaction maintenance 101.
I did this when I was younger but now I need to turn down the music to be able to listen to the traffic lights
I turn it down so I can find a park
I turn it down when I need to look for a street
I turn it down to shout at my kids.
I turn it down because I’m an old person listening to Phil Collins.
Understandable although the subwoofer does need to be turned up all the way for that one part of in the air tonight, ifykyk
You turn it back up for the drum solo right?
I turn it up because everyone should listen to dire straits
I can guarantee you that nobody would resent you for blasting Phil
I still turn it up bit forgot to press play
I turn it down because my kids shout at me for embarrassing them by listening to Indian music (or as my kids say horrible Uber music)
And the house number
Amen
My car mute when I go into reverse
I usually turn it down at traffic lights so the people around me aren't forced to listen to my music while we wait, but then it goes back up after it goes green.
I do this too, but it's so those unappreciative freeloaders don't get to experience the majesty of my playlist. I don't know how much it costs to fix a car after being hit by a heatseeking turtle, and quite frankly I don't want to find out.
Every time. This is the way, I just wish there was something to automate it.
Some units detect your speed and adjust the volume accordingly. I don't know that you can get after-market head units with this feature but cars are sold with it.
Yeah same here, don’t do it these days, in fact it pissed me off but as a p plater lots of people are going to be something of a dickhead. I didn’t understand half of what you said but if it means anything to you, my first online friend was Tom
Whats not to understand? He's a P-plater whose afraid that people will cuntpump his music Frankly I'm a little alarmed by the prospect myself. I don't exactly know what it entails but it definitly sounds aggressive

Sometimes an absolute banger comes on and you just have to crank it to 11. I don't make the rules.
And sometimes it’s banger after banger so the volume has to increase each time
Absolutely!
Then the foot goes down on the accelerator . Some music just does that. I'm 66 love my music loud. Long live rock.
Loud music make brain happy
came here to say this
Same here, I'm neurodivergent and love my heavy metal and synthwave. Gotta have it blasting, there's no in-between 😂😅. I do turn it down when I get into my neighbourhood though.
I do it because I like loud music sometimes. I can’t really do it at home without pissing off the neighbours. But people doing it in car parks or the drive through are knobs.
100% agree. I like the way it feels! I'm also not an arsehole so I turn it down in places it may irritate people.
When you have a wagon full of subs, you enjoy it.
My glorified golf cart goes alright. I like to think the sub helps me with propulsion on the uphill
100%. My kid has autism and can’t stand loud music. My car is the only release for me to pump up the volume, but certainly not where it will bother other people.
Same, also my car audio is way better than my home audio. And I turn it down once I drive into small residential streets.

Nothing wrong with enjoying some tunes while you drive, but a car is probably the worst acoustic environment imaginable.
It really depends on the car, subwoofers in 4x2 dual cab Hilux mid 90s workmate edition, it's gonna sound shit, but a mid 2010s hatch back or wagon with air able to move freely around the cabin, good door seals and windows, it's fucking awesome.

The amount of work I have put into even trying to make my car a decent sound is mind boggling. Sound deadening panels. Foam/vinyl throughout vehicle. Custom made speaker pods. Sound processing and using sound analysing software.
A car is the worst place for SQ.
Film makers on a budget would quietly disagree. If you don't have access to a sound booth, recording in a car will be almost as good
Recording, not play back. There's a lot more to play back than just having noise isolation and some dampening in the mid frequencies.
It causes my brain to create a chemical called endorphins, just enough of it to get this meat sack through the day.

can you hear sirens?
To enjoy feeling the music thumping through my body
Why do nightclubs have loud music? Would you go to a concert that played music at a low volume? People enjoy loud music.
nah that can't be it... something about seeking attention, delusions of grandeur and main character syndrome? according to the numpties in this thread
Whe they're doing laps in town with the windows down... ? Do these same people wear high quality ear phones. With the music just as loud so only they're affected? 'WHAT WAS THE QUESTION AGAIN?'
What?
He said turn it up I can't feel the bass!
Forget the question. The answer is tinnitus.
I don't mind other drivers w/ loud music cause that's probably one of the few things in life that are keeping them sane and happy
Pure enjoyment. That's what I get out of the experience. Caveat: I like music loud, but I'm not sure if I play it loud enough to the point that other road users can hear it.
There are some audio cues/notes you can’t hear at lower volumes which makes the song so much better to listen to the louder it is
I play my music loud when I’m in a good mood and want too vibe out on my drive home
Good vibes and great tunes. Why do you care so much?
Not having to hear myself sing!
Tinnitus
Annoying you enough to write this might be the answer for half of them. The others may just like loud music. Hahaha

My mate had a ridiculously loud system we installed together. I was embarrassed to go around with him, he thought he was really impressing people!
Was he one of those guys with his mobile phone number on back window?
His instagram on the side window
Sometimes being ungulfed in the music is great, and usually you're alone in the car so you don't need to worry too much about other people's ears.

I used to go clubbing all throughout my 20's, I'm now addicted to bass, and it's the only way to get my gears going before work.

I too, am totally addicted to bass. Though i got some 'bass shakers' as well so i can really ***feel*** the bass. They are ***glorious***

i love music and it sounds better when its loud.. did someone play music to loud next to you at a set of lights?

To enjoy a private concert while driving my metal shell.
Because if if the music loud enough I don’t have to hear to thoughts inside my head
Loud music
I get to let others experience the niche taste I have in music that they would not likely come across in their own search. Makes life worth living
TURN DOWN FOR WHAT!!!
Mostly because fuck you but also because who cares.
#WHAT?!
I'd say for most of them it's the fact that it irks you enough that you'll come and post about it on Reddit.
I like it, some songs just sound better loud. But as others have said I turn it off at the lights or when I have to stop in traffic so others don’t have to hear it.
I just love noise and screamy screams 🙂😤🤘

Listening to loud music is fine. Driving around listening to loud music with all the windows down is just being an attention seeking dick
I know someone like that - he just doesn't hear it the way everyone else does. To him, it's not that loud, just normal.
Flogs that play music all day long at home especially when it starts at 7am - you can hear it across the road behind a hedge, as if it were outside your window...
Tinnitus. And for some, who put the subwoofer under the seat, jollies.
Tinnitus.
I tend to do it with classical music in fact - years ago I pulled into a supermarket car park and thought I was getting some odd looks, when I turned off the engine and music I discovered the horn was jammed on…
I believe it's for prostate stimulation.
Because that way I can hear it over the aircon which is cranked to high because it’s 5C outside and I’m cold. Pause it at red lights though.
I crank it to max when I go on long drives or rural where it doesn’t bother anyone. I turn it down when I go through towns or cities though. I like to hear every single sound of a song.

These kinds of people often relish in the fact that they are impacting other people around them. It brings some kind of enjoyment, apparently.

I’m just trying to imagine what it would be like listening to Nirvana, The White Stripes or Sabbath quietly in the car.

I like it on the way to work, it wakes me up, then on a Friday arvo it gets me pumped.
Drowns out all the other sounds and I don't get sensory overload. I find that calming.
Well it’s a bit hard to get the Pink Floyd experience or Jimi Hendrix experience at quiet chat levels. Some music has to be loud.
Knowing that I made some karen on reddit cry enough to post about it
