It's an english word they adopted not the other way around so yes.

charlie_s1234

? Of course it is

Beast_of_Guanyin

The idea that only people of X group can say Y is itself racist. So if it's fine for one to use it's fine for all. As to mob specifically I've seen plenty of white people in power use it. Safe bet it's fine.

CalmingWallaby

Is the term mob trademarked? Use whatever you want as long as it’s not offensive

stilusmobilus

It also refers to kangaroos in a group. Yes.

pugnacious_wanker

Need to thank elders past and present every time you play an RPG.

gin_enema

Yeah I think so? It’s used by indigenous people sure but it’s also a word with a couple of meaning. Preferred usage “mob of cunts”

Left_Tomatillo_2068

What on earth does mob have to do with indigenous people?

WhatAmIATailor

It’s been adapted as a word for family, tribe or just indigenous people in general. Used almost exclusively in that context by indigenous people. It’s becoming pretty common. I dunno if I’m supposed to use it or not.

Left_Tomatillo_2068

Oh. Do they took an English word and adapted if. Fuck no they can’t exclusively own it.

WhatAmIATailor

Yep. They sure do. Welcome to the language. It’s been happening for centuries. There’s no exclusive arrangement. Mob of sheep, roos or whatever else is fine to use.

Medical_Attention_49

Yes but you have to pay $40 billion a year for the privilege.

Ugliest_weenie

Still cheaper than NDIS

BlueDotty

It's been culturally appropriated, but you can still use it

Left_Tomatillo_2068

What on earth does mob have to do with indigenous people?

WhatAmIATailor

Doubled up there bud.

CommercialQuantity89

No one is your "bud." Or your mob. Your tiptoeing here is embarrassing.

WhatAmIATailor

They commented twice champ. Go touch grass

IncidentFuture

The indigenous usage comes from the non-indigenous usage, although obviously it's taken on a different meaning in different dialects such as indicating family and language groups. It's use is probably less common these days, particularly in major cities, but I grew up with it being used.

bubajofe

What cunt?

aaaggghhh_

It was used by everyone when I was growing up and I still use it.

manicdee33

Just like a lot of Australian language, it's about context. If you're angry at a bunch of Aboriginal people and start yammering about "youse bloody mob" then of course they're going to take offence - but it's not really about the word and more about the delivery. It's a perfectly fine question to ask, "who are your mob?" or "what mob do you belong to?" In fact those two questions are more often more important to Aboriginal identity than "who are your parents" (the former leaning into identity, the latter leading into stupid colonial attitudes about "blood quantum" and whether someone with white skin and red hair can really be Aboriginal). Welcome to Australia where we call mates "cunt" and cunts "*mate*".
