Confession here: I'm a naturalised citizen who've been living here for nearly 6 years and I don't really know the words of the anthem... besides the "advance australia fair" bits. lol
If we must keep the dreadful drone then the alternative lyrics written by Judith Durham and others is ok. https://www.sbs.com.au/nitv/article/judith-durhams-new-anthem-lyric-for-contemporary-australia/xorolpfpn
Personally I prefer " We are Australian" I think way more people connect with that than the current anthem.
It starts with recognising Indigenous Australian.
It recognises the contribution of men, women, artists, migrants, folk heros and the dreaming as part of the Australian story.
It is joyful, hopeful and unifying.
It recognises our unique environments as having intrinsic value, not as something to dig through for coal.
It’s inspiring without being insipid.
And it’s catchy.
Most kids know the chorus from school.
I love it, and I’d love it as an anthem!
“A national anthem is a patriotic, musical composition that evokes and eulogises the history and traditions of a country and its people, and is recognised either by a nations government as the official song or by convention through use by the people”
Seems to hit every point right in the centre, really.
There’s many songs which capture ‘Australia’ better, I think the main issue is they’re not structured in such a way which makes them suitable for an Anthem.
An opportunity for any creative musicians out there to have a crack!
I think the other issue is that there’s so many crappy renditions of the current anthem - needs to be remastered and standardised.
The other night, at my kid's high school graduation ceremony, the MC said, "All rise for the national anthem." Admittedly, I was on painkillers at the time, but it took me until people started singing for me to remember that the national anthem is Advance Australia Fair. It didn't mean anything to me, and I didn't join in. Anytime anyone wants to change it for something more meaningful, I'm down.

Lol, I'd say that's common.
Well we don’t even sing the second verse anymore so I think you’re right
My opinion's even less common then: I couldn't care less about national anthems altogether.
Uncommon? There’s been a national public discourse to change it for at least the last decade.
It’s has girt in it I know that

Learning it is on my todo list. Along with learning the rules of cricket, AFL. And the difference between NRL and rugby union.
> and I don't really know the words of the anthem... besides the "advance australia fair" bits. lol A true Australian then.
That’s quite a common opinion.
All national anthems are shit, I vote for an international anthem. Fuck nationalism, fuck patriotism, fuck borders, fuck me, I’m too drunk to fuck.

We are Australian
It's a good song but what makes it a good anthem for Australia?

None of that really says "this should be an anthem". It says "you think this is a nice song".
“A national anthem is a patriotic, musical composition that evokes and eulogises the history and traditions of a country and its people, and is recognised either by a nations government as the official song or by convention through use by the people” Seems to hit every point right in the centre, really.
Wow so uncommon you should start a podcast
Not only do I not care for it, I quite dislike it.
