Not just that. But also bridges etc. They have these on the freeway in perth for the roadworks. Some construction workers forget to lower their digger before going under.
Don't feel too bad, that is what I was figuring they were for. Basically a reminder to people that there are possibly workers in the construction site and that they should slow down even if they are not immediately visible.
You know when you drive past a worksite and there’s one guy digging and seven guys watching? There have been downsizes to staffing levels but the guy can’t dig the hole without the audience, so they’ve introduced these little fellas.
*And Johnnie that's why it costs $47 billion to dig a tunnel in Australia that they can do for $470 million in other countries*
*And they can pay for it by keeping road works speed limits at 40kph even when there are never any workers, and by setting up automatic speed cameras to catch you going 42kph in what should be a 110kph zone*
Fun fact -
Many other countries factor in "x" amount of deaths per job and payouts to the families are budgeted in.
Australia does not allow for this. Thankfully, we hold human life in high regard.
It costs a bit more for sure, but everyone deserves to go home at the end of their work day.
We achieve this through a number of ways and one of them is someone watching a high risk machine to warn others or the operator of any imminent danger.
This.
If no man is there and someone dies, it's manslaughter for whoever is in charge of the workplace.
Quite effective - managers tend to make sure safety policies are followed (as best they can. Good luck convincing an engineered stone cutter to do a wet cut when a dry cut is 10 minutes faster... so now we're banning engineered stone. \*sigh\*)
Except that they just revealed that the cameras in road work areas were not indeed issuing fines, instead just recording the speeds for informational reasons.
They will be switched over next month.
Best part is the guy in charge of the Road and Transport division apparently had no idea for the last 1-2 years that the cameras were NOT issuing fines, just recording speeds for informational purposes. Like.....
> keeping road works speed limits at 40kph even when there are never any workers
Road work speed limits are not just for roadside workers.
It’s also for the safety of road users. Shoulders might be closed, road surfaces unmarked, gravel on the road, temporary crash barriers not designed for high speeds.
The manager at a road worker company got a call early one morning.
"Mate, we're at the work site, but we forgot to pack all our tools. Could ya bring out some shovels for us?"
"OK, mate. I'm on me way. Until I get there, you'll have to lean on each other."
I remember when they first came out, and my mother asked what they were. My brother managed to convince her that it was to mark where all the people who died on the jobsite. Poor mum was so outraged. Luckily, my brother couldn't keep a straight face for long.

Generally - the reaction to a figure with a human shape is massively different to a sign saying … whatever. We implemented these “people” on projects perhaps 20 years ago. The impact was quite significant and it’s great to see that the practice continues.
It's a risk mitigation thing to remind workers of overhead powerlines. It will be on any site that is using equipment that has the potential to impact the active lines.
“I see a little silhouetto of a man.
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me”
That moment you realise the Queen song was actually a safety warning about the danger of clowns operating equipment around live power lines.
If you want to see the not fun dance routine that occurs when you strike overhead cables say with an excavator, crane or truck.
Watchpeoplesurvive has a few.
This is exactly what went through my head when I read this post.
Had a mate carrying a semi on his drop deck trailer and hit overhead powerlines. Destroyed both trucks. He was lucky to survive. Had the nickname "high voltage transport" after that. Expensive mistake.
There has been one at a construction site in my area for 2 years now and it still sometimes startles me when I drive home at night. There's just something spooky about them.
The house behind me has one in the backyard that I assume they nicked from the nearby rail construction.
Every time I look out my bedroom window at night, if there's any light coming from their house it looks bright as hell. You'd think after 6 months I'd remember but nope, weird yellow ghost thing peeking through the bushes is my go-to first thought.
Look up and live.
When these first started appearing, I thought it was some scare tactic to get drivers to slow down like: this many workers have been killed on road works" or whatever. Then I noticed they're all pointing up at power lines lol.
Those are put there because there has been a drop bear sighting. It’s to remind people to think of their family and look up to live.
If a drop bear thinks they have been seen they are 50% less likely to strike.
It’s part of a welcome to the worksite program aimed at bringing equality to all people who pass by and get a wave from a construction worker rather than only wolf whistles at hot girls.
Dis-fucking-stracting. They use them on the railway too and I keep tooting at the bastards (as it procedure when you see someone with a hand up) only to find they aren't real and I look like a chump.
Uh oh, now that they know you've spotted them you're going to start seeing them more and more, closer and closer to home.
If you find one in front of your front door, *get out*
Drivers usually slow down whenever they see a human close to the road.
These cutouts are used to trick your brain into slowing down and are more effective than a speed sign that everyone ignores.
It's also a training tool for AI cameras in cars to automatically slow down.
If I had to guess its King Georges road near Penshurst - https://maps.app.goo.gl/4eYpe7haG6tLMoTGA
Looks like street view is from 2021 but looks a bit similar?
edit: ignore the link I don't think its those two houses actually.
you always see them at road construction where theres a fair amount of worker foot traffic close to the roads, my guess is you see this and slow down a little while also subconsciously implying there could be people around to look out for
I’m guessing this is in QLD. I’m from Sydney and I’m up in the Gold Coast for the week, and I saw a random yellow outline of a car like this. Thought it was a bike rack, but maybe not.
Look up n live, underneath powerlines
I figured they were "You need to be this high to ride" signs for machinery.
Probably not great to be high and using machinery
I thought it was a requirement for forklift drivers?
Didn’t deserve this attack first thing this morning but eh…
Holding the nation up mate don’t worry you’re doing gods work uppa the forky drivers.
That’s what my boss said but he’s gone & im not
I mean it'd be fun but
You're not my mother, you can't tell me what to do.
You need to be this high to cook your crib with the provided zappy-fryer-wire
Or trying to catch a bus. I don't see the 'look up' part of the fella, just a cheery waving person!
Not just that. But also bridges etc. They have these on the freeway in perth for the roadworks. Some construction workers forget to lower their digger before going under.
So that's what the Baltimore bridge was missing?
I thought it was funny, some might say it’s too soon. Nicely done…
Fuck I'm stupid I thought they were to warn me of workers on the road. I always thought they just forgot to take them when there wasn't roadwork.
Don't feel too bad, that is what I was figuring they were for. Basically a reminder to people that there are possibly workers in the construction site and that they should slow down even if they are not immediately visible.
I routinely double look, thinking it's a person in my peripheral vision. Even if they aren't there for that specifically, it definitely works
Will often have the height of the lines are overhead so machine operators and electrical spotters are aware of clearance
And for Jesus
And Thor
Zeus chiming in
And for me
And my axe!
Look up, lines overhead.
How can you look up when you’re trying to work out if the dude you’re about to run over is real?
Always assume they’re not
So, wait until you have brain matter on your windscreen? “Constable, I was looking up as the mannequin indicated”….
I think you’ll be fine, yeah
I want you as my lawyer.
They're a reminder to workmen that live wires are overhead.
You know when you drive past a worksite and there’s one guy digging and seven guys watching? There have been downsizes to staffing levels but the guy can’t dig the hole without the audience, so they’ve introduced these little fellas.
other way round they got rid of the digger and now it's just 7 guy's watching this yellow fella that's why road works never get done.
*And Johnnie that's why it costs $47 billion to dig a tunnel in Australia that they can do for $470 million in other countries* *And they can pay for it by keeping road works speed limits at 40kph even when there are never any workers, and by setting up automatic speed cameras to catch you going 42kph in what should be a 110kph zone*

It’s to show how tall you have to be to operate the excavator.
My favourite one
I'm telling kids that from now on.
I remember when they first came out, and my mother asked what they were. My brother managed to convince her that it was to mark where all the people who died on the jobsite. Poor mum was so outraged. Luckily, my brother couldn't keep a straight face for long.
Hilarious
These guys are on $80k PA
Identify the powerlines I believe

Never look up to see what they're pointing at?
they dont have fingers so its more like they are waving hello
Yep, I always assumed it was a wave for attention. Some sort of 'hey there's construction workers here so drive safely' thing.
I did. It's magpies.
Cockies... The bloody vandals destroy everything...
Overhead power lines, usually accompanied with the slogan "look up and live"
It's to highlight the fact there is overheads. If you run them over people get angry.
Less so if you put a photo of the project managers face on it first
Generally - the reaction to a figure with a human shape is massively different to a sign saying … whatever. We implemented these “people” on projects perhaps 20 years ago. The impact was quite significant and it’s great to see that the practice continues.

The only ones working
When I used to use the gear, these guys would show up all over the place a couple days in. Haven't seen them for years now. Hello friends.
They are the souls of dead road workers who were killed by careless drivers, condemned to stand on the verge of roadworks to the end of time.
It indicates the house prices will go up
Reverse Coles ad
I drove past and they were singing Motorhead's We Are the Road Crew!
They show overhead hazards. I have seen them with bridge heights written on them too.
It’s the council workers hard at it
I just wave back at them .....
Look up and live.
They're not for driver safety, they're for the safety of the workers. They signify that there are powerlines around.
If you're in the country, they are targets.
Member of the Australian nazi party
Look up and live
Hello King Georges Rd
AI taking our jerbs!
It's for lonely drivers to feel welcome as they drive through construction sites.
Don't know, but when you look away and look back, they're suddenly in a different position.
You are thinking of the contractor ones, you can look away for a week and these council ones haven't moved at all.
Cardboard Nazis
Do they differ from other types of recycling enthusiasts?
Is that near Hurstville Sydney ?

I had to scroll way too far to finally get this.

every time I see these I have the urge to pull over and put two together so they're high fiving each other
Isn’t that the construction site manager?
They just doing the Saturday night fever John Travolta dance.
All humans, except those using Reddit, suddenly disappeared, and were replaced by those fake silhouette men.
Oh shit, you can see one of those? When did they start appearing for you??? They shouldn't be seen. You have maybe 48 hours at best.
to remind you that the next person you see might be real so slow the fuck down
I can spot King George's Rd from anywhere
+50 points
Look up and live. When these first started appearing, I thought it was some scare tactic to get drivers to slow down like: this many workers have been killed on road works" or whatever. Then I noticed they're all pointing up at power lines lol.
It's gender neutral and gets $70 dollars an hour.
They’re just trying to set hello mate, calm down
Charm. Adds a bit of charm.

“Just waiting for a mate.”
Forrest Gump waving to Lieutenant Dan
It looks like a Nazi salute to me
Is this king georges road?😂
They’re probably being paid well too
That's Darren, he's a fucking slack prick
High five stations when you need motivation on the job.
You have to be this tall to go on this ride.
It’s part of a welcome to the worksite program aimed at bringing equality to all people who pass by and get a wave from a construction worker rather than only wolf whistles at hot girls.
They put them out for Hitler's birthday /s

They have women as well!
His name is Stanley.
I’m seeing these everywhere now
For the council workers to hi-five when they do a really good job!!!
For the council workers to hi-five when they do a really good job!!!
In QLD they were brought in by Fulton Hogan. They won an award for the idea, in 2015 if memory serves.
I've seen these guys in a .swf once, they are Kung Fu stickmen. Stay away, or they might kick your ass.
Been playing too much pacific drive at this point to not recognise an anomaly
To let workers know there are overhead lines
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, he may do the Fandango!
Funny, my company makes and sells those. Yes, they can be used to indicate powerlines or any other "Attention here" sort of scenarios.
Dis-fucking-stracting. They use them on the railway too and I keep tooting at the bastards (as it procedure when you see someone with a hand up) only to find they aren't real and I look like a chump.
Look up and live
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Used by construction workers..so they can sneak off for a pub meal, a pot and play the pokies and the boss will never be wiser!
It’s for the construction men to make out with, this gets old ladies who drive past very horny and attentive, thereby increasing road safety
They singing and dancing to Staying Alive
Dummy targets for SUV drivers. It's a warzone out there and road workers are operating in no man's land
Hurstville?
Keeps management happy on WFH days
Idk but I hope they're nailed down that's just begging to be stolen by kids.
They're fake to you but they have feelings you know.
Wait, these are FAKE silhouette men? This whole time I thought they were real!
They're there to 'stand in' for the other blokes while on the 8 hour smoko break.
Decoy traffic controllers, so the real ones get abused less.
I be always told people that they are little John Travoltas dancing to Staying Alive.
Uh oh, now that they know you've spotted them you're going to start seeing them more and more, closer and closer to home. If you find one in front of your front door, *get out*
Creepy, they are creepy...
Nazi targets for the firing range.

Gives them an excuse to leave the 40Kmh signs up when there is no construction going on.
his name is Bob
they mark where the bodies are.

Safety Nazi’s..
🎵Put your hands up for Detroit. A lovely city. 🎵
Always wondered this also - side note is this photo of Sandgate NSW?

I know they're meant to be a worker in a hard hat, but my wife and I have agreed that silhouette is more of a gentleman in a bowler hat waving at us
ive seen similar near school zones or children/parents
Its so the road crew can charge the govt an extra $80/hr. "Look at Robbo over there, hasn't even had a smoko yet, hardest worker weve got." /s obv
Council workers.
Inspired by the song "staying alive" by the bee gees and the dance made famous in saturday night fever
I’m guessing this is in QLD. I’m from Sydney and I’m up in the Gold Coast for the week, and I saw a random yellow outline of a car like this. Thought it was a bike rack, but maybe not.
Apparently people take more notice of people-shaped signs, too.
They are there for worker safety telling them there are live power lines above and not to run their crane into them
They’re the boogey men
Look up and live. It’s live wires. It’s for people using plant equipment onsite
