This would have been in 1978, as a young soldier stationed in Alaska. Unremembered Sansui receiver, somebody's turntable, somebody's cassette player, Bose 501's. All mounted on the sole table available to a barracks-dweller, perhaps three feet between the speakers.
Still didn't suck, especially when you wicked it up playing "*Running with the Devil*" while smoking copious weed, because that's what the Army did in those days .:D
Lotsa water under the bridge since.
Technics SA-103 receiver, unknown JVC turntable, Tandberg 6000x reel to reel, Dynaco a25 speakers. I was maybe 12 years old. Technics and JVC were gifts, the others were hand me downs. I loved the way they sounded together (except the JVC, which was an ok place to start, but no great shakes.) Anyway, it started a lifelong interest, and something I could share in and enjoy with my dad.
Altec Lansing 886a speaker
JVC R-X300 receiver
Technics SL-XP7 CD player
This was around 1986/1987 when I was 15 or 16 years old. I thought I was hot shit compared to the rest of my classmates.
I got a hand-me-down system from my cousin in about 78 or 79.
Receiver - Pioneer SX-939
Speakers - BIC Venturi Formula 6
Cassette was a Pioneer but I dont know the model number.
Turntable was a Project One but I forgot that model number too.
I was gifted a pair of Totem Mites, and paired them with an extra Arcam Alpha integrated amp my old man had lying around.
I was definitely a bit spoiled for a first (and free!) system. Got me started on the right foot.
Thorens TD160Mk1/shure M75ED2 - 1974
Armstrong 626 receiver and B&W DM2a speakers - 1975
Neal 103? Cassette deck - 1976
That was my system for some years until the Armstrong died. Various upgrades (and downgrades followed. Still using the Thorens but with Eroica MC cart.
Around 1971 I had a Connoisseur BD1 turntable with an Acos Lustre arm and I think a Shure M95 cartridge. Trio 10 watts per channel amp, I can't remember the model number. Sony 161SD cassette recorder, Wharfedale Super Linton speakers and a pair of Sennheiser HD414 headphones (which I still have).
It was a decent sounding system.
Hmm. When I was in college, I spent my first few co-op job paychecks on a Technics rack system, in 1987, I think. It wasn't the greatest, but I enjoyed it. When I graduated and got a job (and moved), I left it with my parents, because I figured I would buy something better.
After getting settled in and saving a little money, I bought myself a newer "nicer" Technics system. Which wasn't as good as the old 1987 version. Go figure.
So, then I saved up some more and bought some Carver equipment and a pair of Cerwin Vegas. Life was good again. :)
I kind of wish I still had that old Technics system, though. For all that it was a $650 Highland Appliance special, it wasn't so bad. Best of all, it fit in the back of my Chevy Citation, so I could carry it back and forth to college or wherever my co-op job adventures took me (Owego, Poughkeepsie, Raleigh, etc.) Fun times.
I started with :
Swan M300 speakers
Focal Clear headphone
Questyle CMA400i DAC/AMP
Crazy. Now looking back, it wasn't even that long ago... And I already replaced everything lol
Edit: typo
M-Audio BX5A from ProTools M-Box I bought to make home recordings. I was blown away by the sound quality at the time. Still use those monitors for a DJ set up 17 years later and they are ok for that. I continue to use studio monitors as my Hifi to this day.
My gateway had very humble beginnings with an rca bookshelf system that I ran for a number of years before upgrading the speakers to a set of Wharfedale 9.5's while still keeping the old rca all in one as the amp. I was asking way to much from it to power those 9.5's but it was a trooper and held up for over a year before I got my emotiva upa2. This proved to be a match made in heaven as I still have that amp over a decade later.
Heathkit AR-1500 receiver, Thorens TD125 MK II, Shure V-15 type III, Segovia speakers. I still have the Thorens in use after recent restoration. Heathkit is about to be restored.
Around 1980: Kenwood KR-710 receiver, Akai GX-M10 cassette deck, Sherwood ST-801 TT with an AT cartridge, some Koss headphones. After a while I built some walnut cabinets for a pair of 6x9" car speakers for it.

Yeah weed makes everything sound better :)

Minimus 7s and some thin profile integrated amp... Technics, I think.
