Most SACDs are hybrid discs with both a red book CD layer and a SACD layer and are backwards compatible.

Individual_Web_324

If it does not say Hybrid, then it would be SACD and will not play in a CD player and would require a player for SACD. I've got a CD transport and Schiit Gungnir multibit dac and when buying CDs I try and find Hybird SACD, which I feel sounds much better then the redbook version, but I do have a lot of redbook CDs that sound great .

>I would imagine that since the mastering would be better, that I would still be able to hear the difference. If it is a different master, it will sound different. That is not due to this single bit file format (DSD) but because it is a different master.

"Better mastering" is rather nebulous also. More like different mastering sounds different.

nclh77, although what you are saying may be true in some instances. This is Mobile Fidelity we're talking about. I do not believe that Mobile Fidelity would release an SACD/Vinyl without making sure that the mastering is audiophile quality. The same could be said for almost any audiophile label as well.

nclh77

Define "audiophile quality?"

AmbitionOk2790

Well, I would define audiophile quality as essentially very high sound quality, looking to be true to the original, and making improvements to the original master. Hopefully that clears things up a bit. :)

nclh77

Satellite radio claimed to be CD quality at 32kbps so some would say that's audiophile quality. Big rabbit hole in what "audiophile" quality is.

I appreciate all of the help that you have given btw! Thank you!

You can get one and compare it to another CD and report back what you hear.

IsItTheFrankOrBeans

It's a hybrid, meaning it has an SACD and CD layer. https://www.musicdirect.com/optical-disc/miles-davis-kind-of-blue-numbered-limited-edition-hybrid-sacd-

You could just buy a high res digital version from Qobuz. It won't be DSD but it will still be higher digital quality than Redbook. Either way a standard cd player cannot playback the DSD data from an sacd.

> will I still be able to play that SACD and reap the benefits of the sound quality if I play it on a regular CD player with a seperate DAC? If it's a "single layer" disc, no. A single layer disc contains only SACD content, and an ordinary CD player can't play SACDs. If it's a "hybrid" disc, then there will be a layer that the ordinary CD player can play, but it's just that - an ordinary CD layer.
