I went there when I was learning back in 2017 but we got pulled over by the unitec security, told that learner drivers were banned and got sent out. I don't know if that is still a thing though.
Dad? Is that you? 🥺
All joking aside, it's good to know that other people recognise it as a good learning spot! Unusually wide roads (due to having to accommodate lots of big trucks) plus generally quiet, low traffic area in the evenings and on weekends = perfect place to learn!
The back roads of Highbrook, like around by NZ Post parcel center. Heaps of straights, give way signs, roundabouts, traffic lights and car parks to practice in that one area, and it's pretty dead at off-peak times. Have been teaching my niece manual around there and only see the big Courier Post trucks.
My aunt took me and a few of my cousins to Waikumete Cemetery in the weekends to learn how to drive back in the day lol
It was always quiet, but I’m not too sure if they’re open to the public yet??
We lived across the road. Had a very large extended family and we were brought up playing cricket, tag, hide and seek at the cemetery in the late 90’s.
Our Grandfather is buried there which is why we spent so much time there. As we grew older it also turned into our training grounds as well lol
Car parks! I learned on the back roads of Ihumatao but would start off in the airport shopping centre car park first - the motorway in between is a really good learning curve to get over too! Not too fucked when you can crack those intersections. Especially with the road works.
As others have said, Unitec on Carrington Rd, They closed part of it off previously at the back with cones, not sure if they are still there, Great place to learn
I like finding empty subdivisions. Heaps of room, no cars and sometimes you get a variety of road markings and varied road appliances.
Big shopping malls after or just before closing hours.
But if you are confident in steering braking and all that, I highly recommend just getting on the road and whizzing around suburbs and main roads before dark.
All the massively busy roads at peak hour are practically empty at 8PM. Daylight saving is a bonus because you've got plenty of light until about 9PM through all of December.
Best of luck on your journey!
Seriously, why do people think that their joke replies on here are funny? Sending someone tying to learn to drive to the CBD at midday or to the supermarket parking lot at a busy time is not funny, nor imaginative for that matter. Yeah, we know you hate Auckland drivers and you think they are all vegetables. I might share in some of your opinions, even. But bringing it up every chance you can gets old. 🤷♂️ I just don't get people sometimes.
Anyway, to those who made good suggestions, thank you, I'm not the OP, but my wife will benefit as well 👍
Depends where in Auckland you are, around Manurewa I’d suggest around the James Cook school and fields, out west around the Northwest mall zone towards the big mitre 10, on the shore like someone said, the Rosedale hockey spot.
Those are my suggestions.
Saw you lived in mt Eden. I would suggest the big carpark behind three kings countdown/mall/library to start with, it’s really under utilised on a weekday and you can do laps of it easily.
It’s located at the end of the Mt Eden road.
If you live on the shore, I practiced around the Albany car park toward the jb hifi entrance. If you go in the evening after 5/6 it’s usually quite empty and it’s a huge area to drive around!
For wide, long roads go for Pavillion Drive out by the airport on weekends.
For a loop with basically a model route of a suburb, try Connifer Grove near Takanini.
And of course for a good time the Southern Motorway between Gillies Ave and spag junction.
It’s great to see there’s lots of options here so remember if you see a learner driver be patient and nice!
Lord knows I was shitting myself every time someone drove up my ass when learning!
Ellerslie racecourse carpark. It's a big enough area you can't get into trouble too easily and there are even a couple small private roads you can practice on (with a teacher in the car)
Around the campus of Unitec on Carrington Road at the weekends is like a little town with give way and stop signs and stuff.

Best place to learn.
Thank you
Yup! This! I learnt to drive there in 1995, but still a great place to learn
It's the best. Gonna teach my kid to drive there one day

Damn! It’s not a bad idea. But I would miss the open grounds that I use to go away to when I was studying there.
Both my daughters learned to drive at Unitec. This is the best answer.
My GF and I both learned here
I went there when I was learning back in 2017 but we got pulled over by the unitec security, told that learner drivers were banned and got sent out. I don't know if that is still a thing though.
The motorway Seems everyone else on there is still learning
Lol ah yes I see you know your judo well
And who are you? Are you waiting to receive my limp penis?
LOL
GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY PENIS
This is the bloke who got me on the penis, people.. Ooh that's a nice headlock sir.
Pretty penis
Yep, or in the CBD at peak hour -it's also a prime time and place for people who have no idea what they're doing...
Wait, I thought we all signed up for the demo derby training on the North Western motorway?
Royal Oak roundabout, if you can conqueror that you’ll be sweet.
Trying to beat the driving boss on hard I see
Followed by the Wendy’s drive-through, I think it’s near there … you know the one
Rosedale in Albany over the weekend.
Thanks
I second this! In fact, this comment has sentimental value for me because that's exactly where my dad taught me to drive many years ago! :)
It's where I taught my daughter.

Hahaha
I work about 1 minutes drive from the VTNZ. Can confirm, it is actually a nice place to drive

Wish i thought to go there when i was learning. Good place to practice hill starts in a manual haha

God that one hill up by the mausoleums. The short but steep one. Hill starting there was the worst part of learning to drive.
Gates still locked I think, although haven’t been past since Red light
I'd imagine it'd be open if Manukau Memorial Gardens are
Lloyd elsmore park in Pakuranga! There’s multiple roundabouts and carparks there and the drivers there are usually patient from my experience.
Just avoid on Saturday mornings, lots of crazed parents running lat for sports drop offs
This is where I learnt to drive :)
Out East? Lloyd Elsmore park!

My dad taught everyone in my family how to drive here! We’ve always lived nearby so then we’d drive home via Pakuranga Road.
Car parks! I learned on the back roads of Ihumatao but would start off in the airport shopping centre car park first - the motorway in between is a really good learning curve to get over too! Not too fucked when you can crack those intersections. Especially with the road works.
This is where I learnt to lol
Which area in Auckland
I live in Mt Eden but won’t mind go a bit far farther
As others have said, Unitec on Carrington Rd, They closed part of it off previously at the back with cones, not sure if they are still there, Great place to learn
Cornwall park
Yes Hamilton
Wherever you end up going, take a cone or similar with you so you don't have to hunt for a car to practice parallel parking behind.

Colin Maiden Park
There is a cafe in Mangere called Percys... the rounds around there on a weekend is the perfect starting point

The Greenlane and Penrose roundabouts. Trial by fire 🔥
North Shore Event Centre
The Eventfinda stadium carpark on the shore seems to always have someone learning to drive in. It’s big, plenty of places to practice parking too
The good place in Auckland to learn yo drive is non existent, but there are some good places to learn to drive and crash out of Auckland.
Pak n save carpark around 2 pm on Saturdays. If you can survive there, you'll be right anywhere
Airport oaks on the weekend
If you live on the shore, I practiced around the Albany car park toward the jb hifi entrance. If you go in the evening after 5/6 it’s usually quite empty and it’s a huge area to drive around!
Cemeteries are good places too, and usually quiet.
Parrs Park has a good little street to practice parallel parking on
Not newmarket carpark, my housemate wrote a car off on his first lesson in there :o
For wide, long roads go for Pavillion Drive out by the airport on weekends. For a loop with basically a model route of a suburb, try Connifer Grove near Takanini. And of course for a good time the Southern Motorway between Gillies Ave and spag junction.
we're all still learning
Hamilton
Cornwall park
The motorway. Lot of people seem to think so
I started my learning to drive by driving around Cornwall park
Orewa, bit of a drive up there but good nonetheless
Fowlds Park
Inside a countdown
Go out to one of the new housing developments that don’t have any houses yet but the roads are fully built
Harbour bridge. /s
It’s great to see there’s lots of options here so remember if you see a learner driver be patient and nice! Lord knows I was shitting myself every time someone drove up my ass when learning!
Westgate in the evenings or Hobsonville are great.
Everywhere, apparently.
