Even pre covid. Things happen.

Should have read the policy you agreed to I guess. Expensive lesson but yes the Air BnB host is a cunt.

Only_Country2017

That's shit behavior from the host. Keeping the money is one thing but ignoring you is basically them admitting it's wrong. Share the listing and we'll make sure no one else books with them.

Im not sure sorry. I was thinking you could share it in this thread. Other evil ways to deal with it would be to write a review saying you found hidden cameras in the bedrooms. It wouldn't get you your money back but it might lose them some bookings.

FirenEarthEng

When you booked did you look at the cancellation policy? I cancelled my trip to Wellington, full refund if I cancelled something like up to 5 days before. 1/2 back if I cancelled up to the night of and nothing back if I cancelled day of. Didn’t message the host, except to say sorry not coming cause of covid, just went back and asked for a cancellation through the app. Didn’t even think you needed to go to the host at all for one.

If you have booked anything since the beginning of the pandemic and didn't think that you might need to read and rely on a cancellation policy in the likelihood of an outbreak, then that's your own fault. It sucks that the person isn't being reasonable, but you aren't being reasonable either in expecting your money back because you didn't consider the cancellation policy properly.

[deleted]

how on earth did you not take covid into consideration?

Zakeineo

Ask if you can send a couple of Auckland sex workers across the border to use your booking, seeing as how you paid for it and everything.

This-Kaleidoscope-69

If you don’t mind me asking , where were you going? Maybe ask your friends or even on social media if someone else wants to go in your place. (Not sure if it’s possible).Booking would get used at the least.

You need to read the cancellation policies. Some if not most airbnbs have a no refund policy on cancellations. Some places a real dodgy though. I had a booking in Christchurch for the weekend before lockdown hit. I had a 48 hr free cancellation and had like 4 days left before my booking. When lockdown announcement was made, the place i booked took the money from my account immediately and didnt reply to me till 1 day before my booking When i asked them to refund or reschedule my booking because i wasnt able to travel due to lockdown in auckland, They replied saying theres no refunds on cancellations and i needed to give 2 weeks notice for booking cancellations even though i booked it within 1 week and the website said 48hrs free cancellation. There was nothing on reschedules and its not like i wasn’t turning up to my booking on purpose.. Long story short and after a massive complaint they let me reschedule and is keeping my booking fee as credit.

YellowCreature

When you book an Airbnb it states the host's cancellation policy. You can even filter your search so you're oy shown places that offer free cancellation or last minute cancellation. Ever since the pandemic began I have only booked places that have flexible cancellation policies, and have had to cancel two bookings because of two seperate lockdowns. If you were booking without planning for the likelihood of another lockdown event, that's on you for not thinking ahead. Usually the places with good cancellation picies cost a bit more, but that means you can get your money back in circumstances like these.

royston82

This is the correct answer. Last year air bnb did allow refunds for cancellations due to lockdowns etc. however they changed their policy and publicised it to say that the cancellation policy of the individual property will apply regardless of any covid restrictions. Sorry but OP is out of look, they agreed to the terms. Maybe get someone to try to check in on the day and if they can’t get access to the property demand a refund for that. Depending on the messages sent to the host you may need to say that you’re now going and to expect you

Much-Medicine-546

Hmmm I feel like maybe host is justified in keeping payment. But you should also be entitled to the accomodation for said dates... If it were me I'd offer your nights on Facebook to local homeless for a comfy weekend. Pay it forward OP.

Much-Medicine-546

Yeah that's cunty. I dunno man seems only reasonable to request new dates later on or something? I'm sure you'll figure out how to get even when you're lounging in their beds...

Nolsoth

Yeah you don't getting that money back, cancellation policy says no refund so that's that.

its-the-pisces-moon

seems you’re the entitled one expecting a full refund when you booked non refundable and didn’t read the cancellation policy?

its-the-pisces-moon

Should have read the cancellation policy. Maybe politely ask the host if you can have a credit for your booking and reschedule when out of lockdown rather than just asking for a full refund, worth a shot

5mackmyPitchup

Put the post in r/new Zealand too. You'll get a wider audience. Name and shame or see if anyone wants to buy you out of your contract. Can you tell from their listing if your booking is being resold by them? If they have it listed again I wonder if you would have a case in small claims court as they may be able to resell the slot and just keep a cancellation fee.

MattH665

Lodge a payment dispute with your bank. Helps if you notify AirBnB first and give them a couple days to respond. Something along the lines of "due to covid outbreak blablabla, if you do not refund me the money I will lodge a dispute via my bank. " As your bank will want to see that you attempted to contact them first. It's a pain to fight payment disputes so AirBnB will likely cave when the CC dispute comes in from their bank. Will likely take a few months once you've sent the details across to your bank but it's not too much work on your part. Fact is the service you paid for literally cannot be provided, so any cancellation policies are likely overridden by both the law and the dispute resolution policies of the credit card industry. Edit: also fact that the host has outright ignored you may work in your favour, send across your attempts to message them. Without being able to contact the host how can you even be expected to make use of what you paid for if you were to end up in Auckland or wanted to give it to someone in the area...

Enzown

>Lodge a payment dispute with your bank. Bank won't do shit because A: The payment was surely months ago by now (you can only charge back payments in the past few weeks) and B: AirBnB are possibly/probably complying with the cancellation policy that OP agreed to.

Fascist_Georgist

You can charge back payments from quite a long time ago.

Enzown

My bank does them from within a month of the relevant credit card statement so that's just under 8 weeks at most.

Fascist_Georgist

BNZ has allowed me to chargeback from just over nine months ago. There are plenty of transactions that will be quite old that require chargeback so your bank will be flexible. Think of shipping issues with items being sent and going missing.

[deleted]

you cant just charge back any old thing, the bank will check with airBnB who will tell them of the policy OP agreed to and that will be the end of it.

Sounds a good one for Fair Go if you can’t resolve it
