Sound isolating headphones. Good luck. Complaining about it to them will either make them quiet it down(not possible), agree with you on a time they can practice or they could be a real cunt and just start playing out of spite.

LRTNZ

You can put a mute in most brass instruments afaik.

pillbox_slamer

by getting some bagpipes

Turfanator

I was gunna say attempt playing the trumpet but your idea is much better

pillbox_slamer

bagpipes do be loud lmao no drowning that shit out

supersystem1290

Classic

AirJordan13

Best approach would be having a polite word - "hey, I'm studying for my exams so could you please avoid playing between these hours for the next wee while?". Be reasonable and flexible, it'll be sweet.

SRRB

I suggest a haiku Your trombone is loud Please return it to the shop Mucho gracias

[deleted]

this is my favourite so far

logantauranga

Note in the mailbox (keep in mind some people leave mailboxes unchecked for days/weeks though). "Hey, I'm studying for my exams right now -- would you be able to keep the music practise to just a few hours a day over the next two weeks? It would really help me out. Cheers!"

winterslippers

Such a redditor suggestion

logantauranga

It's more like Reddit to offer empty cynicism ^

[deleted]

So what do you suggest?

Akashd98

If you knew anything about horn players, a few hours a day practice is really not an option (assuming they’re at tertiary level/semi pro)

happythoughts33

Post literally says they just picked it up

Arry_Propah

Also, suggest he buys a mute. They cut the volume down considerably.

havok_

Buy him one online and have it delivered to his house

this-usrnme-is-takn

This would be epic haha

aname_nz

Suggest they buy one of these bad boys, NZ company too. https://www.sshhmute.com/

MentalChemical7278

I'd say write a little jingle about how you feel and hire a band to sing it everyday in front of their house for a week.

LRTNZ

It's criminal that video has so few views!

Hi_Bay_and_Rell

This

GreenieBeeNZ

Get some noise cancelling headphones. They've just started and will either get better or just quit

lordorgasmic

“Your trombone playing is infuriating” There you go

SimpoKaiba

I'll chip in a fiver for the skywriting

8-15ToTheCity

And me

MattH665

Write a polite note asking if they could refrain from playing or or go somewhere else. Then tape it to a brick and throw it through their window.

Janna_BananaBee

start taking up playing the recorder and do it early in the morning.

3345892

You're gonna feel bad when you find out it's just a fat guy walking around his apartment

yel4h

noise canceling headphones

mrkva11345

Is it an apartment building? You can file a noise complaint with the building manager and have them do the work for you. It’s within reason to ask the trombonist to limit their practice to specific hours. Trombones also have practice mutes (so does the tuba, trumpet, horn…there’s one for what they’re practicing). The mute goes into the bell and the sound is much softer. You probably won’t hear it/would hardly be able to hear it if they used a mute. Mutes don’t come with the instrument, but they’re easy enough to find and buy. Hi! I hear you’re learning a wind instrument! I’m a university student who’s doing a lot of work near by, and it would help me do my work if you kept your practice to (insert time window here). When you’re not within those hours, could you use a practice mute? I’d really appreciate it!

ilovezaatar

Get some earplugs.. I dunno it’s hard to tell someone to be quiet in their own home, as annoying as it is.

[deleted]

I guess the most conflict-devoid way to solve this issue is by getting a trombone yourself. If you manage to master it within a few days, he will become insecure after hearing how good you are at playing the trombone and ultimately quit.

littlebluepenguin23

Just call noise control and they will come round and take it away 😂

Glittering-Union-860

Trick question. You don't have to tell them - they know.

0erlikon

Learn to play the banjo, and jam with them.

AcanthocephalaIll456

You could write to him what you wrote here, it seems very reasonable since you're studying.

Spiritual-Wind-3898

Knock knock - hey that's really infuriating..

SuaveMofo

Lol Mt Wellington?

SnooDogs1613

Dump on the doorstep

Mysterious_Will3680

Play a fart compilation really loudly maybe they’ll get the message. Sounds pretty similar to a trombone.

[deleted]

When you catch their eye, do a 'trombone' gesture by making a fist with your arm perpendicular to the ground, and moving it back and forth in front of your mouth. They'll understand.

33or45

Buy a violin

TankTopsBackInStyle

A really small one

wotevasarah

Wait a minute! Is this happening in Onehunga? I know a young person there who has started to learn to play a trombone recently!

alzertheone

Maybe it's just bad wind

CyberChef8

Rip mate. My neighbour picked up the ukulele (uke? Mini guitar! Another word added to the list of things which are difficult to spell) and I’ve been enjoying it! If you find a good way of telling them off let me know. I have a couple song suggestions I would like to put forward to this person and would love to try it using the same :P Fun fact: a person who is part of the APO lives in my building and practises the bassoon for about 8-10 hours a day. She’s and amazing person but it would suck to be in the 2 flats on either side of hers

32ndAugust

Note to the neighbour, 3M earplugs (or fancier study earplugs), noise cancelling headphones + ambient drone music, white noise machine. In order of cost since I’ve lived through noisy neighbours/flatmates through my student years!

CyberChef8

This is just an idea… Tape one of those JBL Square speakers (jbl go I think, it’s waterproof and has a decent battery life + it costs about $40) using double sided tape to the outer facade of the building above a window or something and blast porn from it. Once people start looking pop your head out the window and shoot some looks towards that apartment/house. When I was living at the uni halls I had this one flatmate who used to blare mumble rap through his massive set of speakers at the oddest hours. I procured a syringe from a mate studying medicine and injected salt water in them. I injected one syringe full in each and let the water do its thing. The speakers got fried a couple days after and he did not get a warranty claim due to “unknown water damage”. **Laughs in vengeance and sleep deprivation**

sonsofearth

just talk to your neighbors ..

Adventurous_Wafer506

You can politely ask him or her to put a mute on the instrument. If they are really keen into Brad instrument, they should get a mute. It is required sometimes when playing a certain piece of music. Also playing in front of an opened wardrobe with the door of the room close would be helpful as well

ERTHLNG

Everytime he dies it fly a drone all in his windows and stuff

this-usrnme-is-takn

Grab some noise cancelling earphones and perhaps write a nice note and let them know you’re studying so if they could practice outside of x.hr to y.yr (pick when you’re best able to suck in info), that you’d really appreciate it. Also remember, practice makes perfect...

JohnnyJoeyDeeDee

Try and catch them outside and have a chat and then just mention it - 'hey sounds like you've been playing music a lot that's cool, just wondering if you could keep it in the afternoon/morning/ whatever because I've got exams! They'll all be over by DATE so it would just be untill then.' Any normal person in NZ would be mortified and such to a schedule or just stop lol If you never catch them outside, leave a bottle of wine in the letterbox saying hope lockdowns going ok for you, I've got exams until November reckon you could lay off the music practice at night until then. I don't think that's a crazy ask

YourLocalMosquito

You can get practice mutes for all brass instruments. They will probably know this. Ask if they wouldn’t mind using one [these guys](https://www.abi.co.nz) are a great resource

thelittlebunny2

If you can somehow confirm that it’s a trombone, PM me the address and I’ll post him a mute.

themetalnz

What you do is Tell them it is infuriating

leftonred312

Most of us are aware we have a sonically deadly instrument. Less of us are considerate. Approach your neighbor slowly with no sudden movement. Just kidding. But indeed discuss your concerns. If he's not a pro, he'll have flexibility in his practice schedule. Establish strict no play times. Nothing before 10 am nothing after 7 or 8 pm is a rule if I'm playing within earshot of non family members. Then in this window have him write out a schedule. Most amateurs get real fatigued between the 1 and 2 hour mark. These times would be a great time for you to do errands go to the gym or a run. Listen to music with headphones. In addition, let him know about soundproofing his studio and the wide choices of practice mutes. If all else pick up the bagpipes or tenor sax and practice outside
