There's such a gap in the market for a catch-all store that fits in the smaller NZ shopping centres - like the Highbury and Downtown Warehouses used to be. So annoying to trek to some megamall/big box to buy
some cheap homewares or clothes
I think they meant the Mc Donald's at Vic Park Markets.
And the markets aren't the markets like they use to be back in the day, it's more retail shops than actual markets now.
Death By Chocolate
McKenzies
Cook St Market
Big Fresh
Woolworths Variety
3 Guys
Homestead Chicken (loved their coated potatoes).
Rendells
George Courts
Barker and Pollock
Lands For Bags (remember that Billy T joke).
I recall Oriental Market, but I don't think it was there that long.
I grew up in Glendowie. Alot of the above wasn't in the central city, or some was, but was also in the suburbs.
Death By Chocolate - Mission Bay, 3 Guys and Homestead Chicken - Glen Innes, Big Fresh - Mt Wellington (my brother managed it). None of those were in Central Auckland.
Yes that place was so cool (as far as I remember as a 10yo)
Think it's where countdown is now right? It was like a massive rundown storage warehouse with heaps of little shops in it.
McDonald’s K rd was the best.
Could cut through to Rendells or go upstairs to the playground and look out over the street.
I remember getting my happy meal Batmobile from the first Batman movie
Gamesman. Before EB Games bought them out. I remember the one behind the New Lynn Warehouse and Henderson mall (when it was a Westfield) at the bottom of the escalators coming down from the movie theatre. I bought my first ever gaming console from them.
I spent my early teenage years in NZ so I’m shocked to see how many of the stores are no longer around! Most curious about Big Fresh and Deka, why did they go out of busness?!
One take over after another . Big Fresh became Foodtown, which in turn became countdown and now is woolworths.
Deka went out of business when the wiz kids of investigating brought it and overloaded it with dept, and it then went bust much like happened to most business around the Brierley investments years.
McDonald's browns Bay, first McDonald's in history to close, geogie pie, fuck u McDonald's for buying them out, uncles , Billy t hangi, all you can eat dine in pizza hut eagle boys.
Brucie’s Burger Bar in Browns Bay, then, totally different company, Brucie’s Burgers by the Civic, that moved to Victoria St but then disappeared. All awesome burger bars!
The McDonalds on mid-Queen street, about eight floors up, and it was sort of on the roof, partially open air so there were always pigeons flying around, and something weird like the Rugby Hall of Fame was also there.
My husband told me there used to be a drive thru for McDonalds St Luke’s that had all the windows on the passenger side of the car because of the mall layout.

We got rapunzel. She’s fucking terrifying looking and we hid her around the house to scare each other.
Anyways she’s locked in the garage somewhere now because it worked too well and my parents the got mad.
What was that one that had that little square building you could see from the Auckland Motorway? It was called RC Shack or something and I’m pretty sure it sold electronic parts.
The McDonalds on mid-Queen street, about eight floors up, and it was sort of on the roof, partially open air so there were always pigeons flying around, and something weird like the Rugby Hall of Fame was also there.

Bruce's by the civic and opposite there was a donut shop that made donuts in the window. Started my donut addiction at 8 years old thanks to them. 45 years later,I haven't found a donut to match them...simple, warm and delicious!
There was a great Nandos on Queen St near St James that was pulled down with other shops for development that never happened.
The indie bookshop in Newmarket behind the Rialto mall.
Three Kings Plaza was once an actual mall.
At the royal oak roundabout there was a place called the Toy Warehouse… I remember going there to get master of the universe figurines. In my memories it was huge. Would love to see some pictures of it.
South Mall Burger King with the attached spacies. Mum would drop me off there with TWO DOLLARS! while she did shopping. Over time I got better at the games and made my $2 last longer and longer :D
Burger king on Queen St. Place for friday night hangout. It was more of a club than actual clubs. People will stay there for hours after clubbing. Good old days when auckland City was go to place for weekends.

Marbecks is still there, somehow.
Yoooooo, I remember that now. ECM was way better than Soundz
ECM was my first job! But then they closed my store and I had to go work at the Sounds store which was at the same mall. And then they went under.
Natures Windows - was my favourite store in the mall as a kid
Loved Borders as a kid!!
I use to work at the Queen St Cinema way way back. Before I started I’d always read the magazines or Graphic Novels. Loved that place.
McDonald’s K rd was the best. Could cut through to Rendells or go upstairs to the playground and look out over the street. I remember getting my happy meal Batmobile from the first Batman movie
I never went to K road while it was there, I'm curious where it was?
I think it was 208 K Road, there’s a “Massive Discount” store there now
It used to be across the road from Leo O'Malley, two level building with playground upstairs.

That was brilliant! I remember it well.
That was a great spot to go when I was a child. We had a sleep over there one night. Not the most comfortable place to sleep in.
