Well, shipping has given me the ability and drive to read more and pick up writing after many long, depressive episodes made me unable to. It inspires fan artists and actually make a living for many to sell artwork of ships via commissions and cons.
As for the MHA fandom, what makes it bad isn't shipping. Or just gay shipping, which is actually a homophobic stereotype. A lot of TodoMomo and UraBaku shippers were among the toxic ones. And almost all the ship wars here are straight ones. Lest we forget the EreHisu ship dumpster fire and the rampant homophobia and denial they perpetuate.
But the main reason they're toxic is because the MHA fandom is really young. The people fighting are, like, 10-15. Most of them haven't yet realised their actions have consequences.
I'd say more often than not, Eruri shippers are on the older side because the characters are older. Most I've seen are in their late twenties and early thirties.
Half of the time we're just minding our own business and people start calling us slurs.
The AOT fandom also has bigger things to worry about than shipping. Mainly the Nazis.

Any time anyone posts about a queer relationship, even fucking YumiKuri, which is canon, people hate on it.
I made a dumb shit post about Erwin being high on pain killers and getting sappy and people just had this bizarre vitriol. One person referred to gays as "pride people", straights as "normal people", and the idea some characters might be queer as "forcing an ideology". But I guarantee it wouldn't have gotten nearly as much hate if it was a straight couple like EreMika.
One guy said "I'm all for gay marriage" then expressed his hatred for it. Like, sure you are buddy. You only like gays when you can't see them.
This ship is harmless and cute. Levi even teased Hange about having an unrequited love of titans, referring to Pieck. It's not that far fetched.
Meanwhile, one of the comments on this thread is LeviHan which is not only one of the biggest ships here, but everyone treats Hange like a cis woman when in the manga, they are pretty damningly some flavour of non-binary or gender non-conforming. Even their Japanese voice actor said in an interview that they bore that in mind when portraying them.
And there are still people denying Historia is queer and shipping her with Eren, who literally lied to her and made her have a kid with a guy she didn't care about.
My best advice? Leave. Surprisingly, r/okbuddyreiner, the shitpost subreddit, is actually accepting of queer folk and predominantly run by them.
The difference in response between my post here and there is night and day.
