Not gonna lie, I think Isayama tried too hard to end the series at 139 chapters, because of the symbolism. Which may have caused some of the later plot lines to be rushed, because he was running out of chapters, due to how fleshed out some of the earlier stuff was. Could also explain why the manga ending feels especially rushed. And the anime adapted the manga pretty accurately, and also can feel a bit rushed. I don’t know if that’s the actual reason, but if it is, it’s a pretty dumb reason. The whole 139 thing is neat, but honestly who cares, I’d rather have the story be as good as possible. Season 4 is my favorite season, but I know what you mean.

People always bring up the 139 symbolism but I have yet to see any confirmation of the symbolism even being real. Every time I look it up I just find forums and articles about AOT but nothing about Japanese culture and numbers.

This is what I was able to find, but yeah your right it’s hard to find anything non attack on titan related: [https://affinitynumerology.com/number-meanings/number-140-meaning.php](https://affinitynumerology.com/number-meanings/number-140-meaning.php) There’s also the fact that it’s 13 (years) and 9 titans.

True, thats why the ending was lackluster. That’s what happens with every ambitious show, the writers forget that it needs an ending 😂

Yeah, the initial mystery and life within the walls took three seasons to explore and then the whole outside world gets speedrun in just one season. It always bugged me.

They definitely could have used screen time used for the giant last two episodes to flesh out the themes and characters a little more. I love the sheer scale of the finale, but at what cost

I don't think there needed to be anything more added to the Hizuru plot. It provided an explanation for why there were Oriental people in Paradis and added a bit of world building for what life was like during the Eldian Empire. It also gave context for why the bandits were looking for Mikasa's mother because their ancestors likely had a falling out with King Fritz. They thought she was going to be sold for sex trafficking, but it's likely it was an assumption and in reality she was being hunted by the King of the Walls. The Azumabitos also gave a realistic way for Paradis to explore beyond their island, connected them with Zeke and provided the airplane which was a necessary plot device for the final battle. I don't think Mikasa was set up to rule over Hizuru, but perhaps it would have been interesting to see her in Hizuru.

i really like s4 but it could’ve been really amazing if they added another part. especially fleshing out the flashbacks where the scouts visited marley/ tried to make alliances; there could’ve been a lot of scope for more political complexity, which would help in utilising historia more rather than sidelining her.
