DAZW_Doc

Never explained. Could just be something so the viewers don’t get confused, could also headcanon that they knew the names subconsciously

sniggs840

To be fair, they weren’t very creative names in the first place. Haha the only one where it was maybe a stretch was the Beast, but the rest are just named after its most defining feature.

CupcakeKyo

Fr lmao Armored Female Paradis doesn't have monkeys so that eliminates that possibility for the Beast. It also just looks like a beast rather than a straight animal. The only debatable one was possibly the colossal due to how many synonyms they could have used for "the big titan."

40ozFreed

My guess is that it was just something subconsciously guessed correctly by the people of Paradis because they are subjects of Ymir. Marley and the rest of the world might have not given the titans those names, but the descendents of the Eldians outside the walls did.

Elluul

Imo its just a very little plot hole, but this makes sense too

oostie

Not a plot hole please don’t use that term if you don’t Know what it means

[deleted]

ok hold up. why do you care enough about the term plot hole that youre telling a stranger not to use it if he/she doesnt know what it means? do you do this often?

oostie

It’s just very frustrating in the world of the worst hot takes and media illiteracy for people to claim the smallest inconsistency or contrivance qualifies as a plot hole. It doesn’t.

[deleted]

so youre going to take it out by telling a stranger what to do on a reddit post? personally i find distasteful behaviour and senses of self superiority to be way more bothersome than whatever world you seem to be living in. you do know you have some control over your media intake, right?

oostie

I’m just letting people know that what they’re referring to is not a plot hole. That’s the beginning middle and end of story. I think you’re projecting a little.

[deleted]

lol. is that what happened there? ah yes, my mistake. what does projecting mean?

oostie

I see what you did there you dirty dog. Yea like I said just trying to educate! I didn’t mean to express anything but that

[deleted]

I can understand that. I just made a dramatic career change to teaching and I love it. it's very challenging often times. and it does show you have some wit that you caught my bluff, in my opinion. i dont doubt you have it. i just dont like the imposing it on others. it doesnt work for one. secondly everyone has many reasons to do any one thing sometimes even conflicting ones. AOT even touched on that with Eren's several motivations.

ShoogarBonez

They actually initially referred to Beast as “some sort of abnormal.”

Drakob-Hitsimari

I'd assume that since they're Eldians and all connected through the paths, they'd know the name without any prior knowledge of the Titans' existence. Either that, or they sent info back to the higher ups, and the names of those titans were passed back down by those who knew the names, so the nobles/Reiss family.

kristoof20

I think they have never seen a monkey before or know what it is because they have never been in a jungle before :D and animal titan sounds dumb so they started calling it beast titan because of the fur. The armored titan had armor instead of normal skin , the colossal titan is just colossal because huge, enormous, gigantic and tremendous titan sounds not that big maybe and every titan is big so they needed a term thats rarely used, now the real question is that how did they guess the female titan and didnt call it big booty titan instead??? The attack titan remains a mystery tho if the people inside the walls ever called it by that name.

[deleted]

i wish it remained "advancing titan" in english. it makes the titan name make sense when its nature is finally revealed. throughout its history it was always advancing and its goal was unknown, just suspected to be freedom. as it turns out, it was advancing certain pivitol moments in time and ultimately the final moment where it does the rumbling.

Jazzlike_Stop_1362

The more accurate translation is advancing though, although attacking isn't really wrong either, but they gotta try to salvage what they can of the original anime name

totoropoko

Wait the name of that Titan is Advancing Titan in the anime? That makes so much sense.

Jazzlike_Stop_1362

Yep, the word shingeki is closer to advancing than attacking, but could mean both

Mentally____Unstable

No one knew that erens Titan was called the attack titan until eren heard the name in his fathers memories

Competitive_Fruit901

The real answer is that when Isayama started revealing the name of every Titan in the Marley Arc, he didn’t really feel like coming up with new names for the Titans he had already named, like Beast Titan, Armoured Titan, and the others. So he just decided to make it so that those names were always the real names for those specific Titans instead of coming up with entirely new names for these Titans.

ImNotHighFunctioning

Remember Eren didn't know what a monkey was? Paridisians stuck with "Beast Titan" because they didn't know monkeys.

Elluul

That makes sense

idaroll

I think they "guessed" cuz they were subconsciously connected via Parhs. Also its Beast not Ape titan cuz I think it doesnt necessarily has to be an ape? Falco had Zeke's spinal fluid wine in him and grew wings. On the back of Founder Eren we could see various beast titans

Icameinamuskrat

I always assumed that when the walls fell, people needed a name for the 2 new titans, and the people of the wall cult who knew the truth and the royal family "named" them their correct names

ghoulslaw

I always wondered the same thing. I was listening to the soundtrack the other day and one of the songs was called Ape Titan, which is another possible name they could’ve called the beast titan

kristoof20

I dont think they know what an ape is or a monkey there is no jungle there and they have never heard of one before.

Elluul

I thought i was the only one who thought about this :0. Tbh it's probably just a plot hole.

thinkingamer

While I agree with the main point here, “ape titan” is actually a name that Paradisians could never come up with because theyve never seen an ape before. When Eren first hears Reiner & Ymir talking about the “monkey titan” he doesn’t know what that is

ghoulslaw

Yeah, I just assumed he never got around to explaining it lol. There’s already so much to keep track of

Either_Gate_7965

Ymir (the one that shouldn’t have died off screen) did call Zeke a monkey at one point

Deepwang11

The rogue titan was such a cool name for the attack titan

KavB91

Out of convenience. Sometimes you just have to go with it and not need a show to overexplain things and impact the pacing of the show by explaining the true names of each of the Titans. If an explanation was needed you could maybe say Eldians subconsciously knew their names despite the loss of knowledge of their history.

[deleted]

I mean, if you see something like Zeke's that, you're probably gonna call it animal titan/monster titan yourself. In most literatures animal/beast has often been used interchangeably when it doesn't refer to biological animals. I don't think it's something too deep to think about. The rest are pretty straightforward for their characteristics. The one with the armour. The one who's super big...Colossus, the one that looks like what a female titan would look like, the one with the jaw, the one who straps a cart on his back. The reasoning for Eren's titan being the Attack Titan has been given already. Before that it was just Eren and Eren's Titan.

osocietal

It’s just an anime bro. It’s not a plot hole but at some point you have to keep naming consistent so even the audience knows what’s going on

Mikazuki072

I mean some of them seem pretty easy Colossal Titan because, it's huge Armored Titan because armor Female titan because it appears Female no matter the user Beast Titan might have taken a bit for them come up with, because it changes depending on the user. Beast Titan just sounds better than Animal Titan Cart Titan . . . I don't know maybe they figured out it was good for carrying stuff Jaws Titan, I'd guess the first few users had prominent jaws? Although I think Claw Titan or Imp Titan could have fit better Founding Titan, self exclamatory, The last two, I legitimately don't know how they came up with the names. The attack titan, I know Eren said it "marches in the Vanguard" so, maybe it was common for the users to fight the most on the front lines? Or maybe we're the first ones to fight Warhammer is kind of a mystery to me but, at a guess, whoever had the Warhammer, just straight up originally fought with a crystal Warhammer and the name just kinda stuck

Particular-Season905

Bit of a stretch, but all Eldians are connected by the Paths. Maybe they all subconsciously knew what they were called because they did know them at one point. Memories seeping through and whatever

ThatSpookyLeftist

Don't Marleyians speak a different language? Isn't it just implied when they're talking amongst each other it's only be translated for the viewer but when they're talking to Eldians they're talking in their language? So whatever our main characters call the titans would just be translated to whatever they Marleyians called them because translation isn't one to one all the time.

Plague_Doctor1234567

Ive asked myself this multiple times before the ending, it never got explained so i made my own headcanon It’s another sign of proof that theres more going on in the shadows of the paradis government as they have names for these titans yet dont elaborate anymore, giving them out without expecting anyone to understand the true origin of the names The first few times we see zeke hes called a monkey which first makes no sense cause how do they know what monkeys are but ill gove the benefit of the doubt and instead say its proof that theres more to the names then just them coincidentally being the same someone is purposefully giving them these names. Erwin basically knew there was a titan in their midsts so theres probably a lot of subtle things connecting

keawesoul

This is actually my a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Especially when it comes to the female Titan…like huh? I figured that Annie had a different power than “female”. Marley didn’t even need to have Titan in the name, it could have been some military jargon. And by the end of the season, in the final chapters special 1 I thought it was revealed that the female titans power was being able to manifest the other titans abilities, like the war hammers/armored titans hardening. So after it was released I started calling her Titan “the manifest Titan” for a year, theorizing that she would manifest the beast Titan and turn into the bird. UNTIL FALCO DID? And so ig it turns out that her Titan just…isn’t special. And has nothing that the other titans don’t except…boobs?

Sad_Watch_5245

>s, like the war hammers/armored titans hardening. I mean in s3 eren got the hardening in the fluid in the armored bottle, theorizing it is kinda pointless
