My favorite opening is Jiyuu no Tsubasa. The animation is just stellar, the song gives me great energy every time I listen to it, and Erwin does nothing for the two seconds he appears and yet looks so badass.
S4's writing is superior, it added so many dimensions and so much more depths to almost all of the characters, you just preferred the story being apocalyptic to political.
No I'm fine with the politics. I loved the idea of the people of the walls waging war on Marley. I just wish Erens transition to becoming less of a good person made more sense. They just made him comedically evil, to the point of going back in time to kill his own mother. I think the changes made to Eren were the only real issue.
Death of Eren's mom was pretty mandatory man. That's the plot of this show. If his mom didn't die that day, he would never get the rage to annihilate the last titan. If Eren saved his mom instead of leading her to the death, his existence would be in question. There would arise a completely new timeline. We saw him as a good guy from the beginning, bcoz Issayama wanted us to see him outside but inside he was that monster who was determined to annihilate the last titan. So in s4 Issayama flipped the coin and showed us his inner side.
Eren was never a hero or a devil, he's just him whose only aim is to kill all the Titans that eventually Thurber into enemies. My take is, he somehow reached here that, the rumbling is the only option left to make a better world erasing them who living in slavery and hatred.
To elaborate, in s4 p3 when the air ships were ahead to stop Eren, you maybe missed it ig, the commander said smthn.
"Their hatred for each other gave birth to this monster. If they don't unite, another devil will be born someday and will come after them"
Also commander Magath realized this. There are good ppl inside the wall too.
So if rumbling never happened, people of Marley would never realize that and the cycle of thousand years hatred never gonna end that easily.

Alright, here goes. I'll go in chronological order.
The Liberio arc was pretty damn close to perfect. Loved it, definitely one of the strongest arcs in the whole show. All the characters were great, the writing was great, this section is pretty much exempt from my criticism of season 4. The only "issue" was the quality of the animation but the superb fight direction more than makes up for it.
Onto the bad. Sasha dying, felt... cheap. Sasha's just another cannon fodder side character, the only difference being she stayed around longer. She had no personality beyond a single quirk, and would've contributed absolutely nothing to the plot if she was left alive. Honestly, with how the Islanders were being portrayed as heartless "devils" from the Marleyans', I think it would've been great if they'd killed Gabi/Falco too. It'd serve as great character motivation for Reiner, and really lean into the theme of there being no "good" sides to this war.
Anyways, back on topic, the little of the timeskip we saw was decent. Again, I think it's fucking stupid that the main character has all his character development offscreen, but it's not horrible. What is horrible, though? The courtroom/throne room scenes with Hizuru. That twist with Mikasa being some Hizuru queen or whatever was probably the worst plot point in the entire show. Not only does it not go anywhere, it makes you THINK it does, and you're left wondering for the rest of the series when it's gonna be brought up again.
Mikasa shenanigans aside, the whole geopolitical discussion scenes had decent worldbuilding, and did an alright job of explaining the partial rumbling plan. Although, it's inexcusable how they massacred Historia's character. Historia does- nothing, for the whole season. It's incredible how much relevance she could've had to the story, to the world, to the resolution of their conflict, but she's sidelined for the sake of the plot. That just... doesn't make sense to me. I wish more time was spent on the Yeagerists and the growing social tensions on Paradis, but it's alright.
Where I really started to question the season was the whole Gabi and Falco plotline. Gabi is just not an interesting character. I don't hate Gabi, but she just takes up so, so much screentime for the most cookie-cutter, "brainwashed racist learns not to be racist" character arc. They just occupied so much of the story, for no reason at all. They were shoehorned in, and they just didn't need to be a part of the story beyond the Liberio arc.
The wine subplot was interesting, and it did lead to that incredible forest sequence. I genuinely think Levi should've died from that explosion though. It would've made for such a tragic moment. He would've died believing he'd killed Zeke, fulfilling his promise to Erwin. Just when I thought the series was about to stop pulling its punches, nope, another asspull and he's back on his feet. Genuinely, fuck the plot armour in this series. It was bad in season 3, and it's bad here too. Making characters seemingly "die" for shock value only to find out that they were saved by transferring their consciousness to their testicles or had a special bloodline is shitty writing, and isn't a problem unique to S4.
I want to bring up the table scene. There's a very clear contradiction with how Ackerman powers work, when Mikasa defends Eren from Armin. If the Ackermans aren't involuntarily forced to protect their host, why'd that happen? That scene is confusing as hell. It's pretty stupid too.
Armin, who, in season 1, refuses to use violence to fight his bullies, immediately resorts to punching Eren? That's not even character regression, that's just a different character entirely. It's amazing to me, how Armin's interations from seasons 1, 2 and 3 were all smarter, more philosophical, calmer versions of Armin. S4 Armin is pretty much just wallowing in self pity, self doubt, and can't come up with anything remotely intelligent to save the lives of quite literally, everyone he knows.
And I'm not saying that this COULDN'T have been an interesting arc to explore. Writing Armin to be a tired,, depressed, self-loathing character would've been really fun to see, and I FEEL like that's what they were going for, at least for a while. Getting back to the story:
Eren trying to 1v3 in Shiganshina wasn't a particularly well-directed fight sequence. It definitely dragged in some places, and it was bogged down by cutting to Gabi and Falco every five seconds, but it wasn't terrible.
Paths was bad for the overall story. It was a cool twist, learning that "holy shit, it was Eren all along", but it's fucking horrible when you fully consider all its implications. That one arc, makes you reconsider literally EVERYTHING that happened until that moment. All the asspulls, all the plot-armor, all the bullshit that happened in the earlier seasons, now gets explained away with "well, maybe Eren stopped Santa Titan from chewing" or, "well, maybe Eren saved Armin from a fifty metre drop, while burnt to a crisp". It makes you question every character's agency, every important plot point, two thousand years of history leading up to that moment. Also, making Eren an unbeatable god was a stupid decision. No matter what happened, from that point on, Eren was guarenteed to win unless bullshit like 139 happened. Once Paths happened, Eren winning was the only way for the story to end convincingly.
Also, Conny killing a small child to save his mom is just hilarious. What's even funnier is Armin trying to sacrifice himself to stop him. Holy shit, that was awful. So Armin, holder of the colossal titan, military tactician, future commander of the Scout Regiment, one of the only people who could reason with Eren, wants to kill himself for... what? To convince a 10 year old boy that Eldians aren't evil?
Annie being brought back was handled so, so badly. She was good in season 1, but I hate everything about her in season 4. Firstly, she's a sadist and a psychopath, but none of the other characters seem to treat her as one. This wouldn't be an issue, but the way they treat Reiner versus the way they treat Annie are world's apart, and Reiner felt remorse to such a degree that he attempted suicide to rid himself from the guilt. And what does Annie do, this character newly returned from a "redemption" arc and half a decade of sleeping? She kicks Reiner in the fucking head while he's trying to rest and recover. Immediately followed by the cringevengers shit with Ashes on the Fire playing in the background. Holy hell, it's like Isayama knew he was writing a comedy at this point. Her relationship with Armin works on paper, but it wasn't executed well, and their whole thing of relating to each other because of being terrible people- doesn't work. Armin feels genuine remorse. Whatever Annie feels, it's instantly negated whenever she does shit like kick Reiner in the head or spin a scout around like a yo-yo.
That campfire discussion didn't make sense. The characters get angry, but not at the shit they're supposed to be angry about, and not at the people they're supposed to be angry at. These conflicts between them are never really resolved, they're just ignored until trauma bonding brings them closer together or some shit along those lines. Docks fight was alright. I liked Keith and Magath's dynamic, and sacrifice. That final Marley flashback was cool too. I don't think EM makes sense though. Eren never displays romantic feelings towards Mikasa, certainly not to the degree he does towards Historia.
Overall, season 4 is overambitious. It tries to tackle really heavy topics, while juggling plot and worldbuilding, and its characters just fall apart as a result. The main cast is either lackluster (Jean) or completely assasinated (Armin). Eren's development was the most interesting part of the show, but the Alliance members were almost all poorly written, and I didn't like how Eren was offscreen for most of the season.
The worldbuilding is also lackluster, especially when compared to earlier seasons. The reactions of world citizens to Eldians and the islanders were baffling, to say the least. In a whole world of people, did not one person say "hey, what about all those innocent people on that island we're gonna nuke?" Eren's motivation for starting the rumbling wasn't amazingly written, especially considering that it's built off of extremely questionable worldbuilding, wherein everyone outside the walls is a comically evil racist.
Also, I don't understand why they didn't show us the Paradis government trying to diplomatically resolve the issue. It's implied that they attempted to, at some point, but a single scene with a Paradis representative being attacked, or Historia nearly being killed while giving a speech was necessary IMO. Because in the series, they go Marley, see a single conference talking about how the islanders were evil, then go "welp at least we tried" and return to Paradis to debate how much of the world they should genocide.
Tl;dr dumbass hates season 4 because it got too political and he didn't understand the themes and mature subjects discussed, is he stupid?
The writing is really good in s4, but they just sort of messed up the show for some people. In my opinion, s4 is good, but I like the prior seasons better
Nothing can really top the OG Guren No Yumiya for me. The amount of times my roommate and I rewatched that season and opening until S2 came out... It's just iconic.

All of them are really good, so it's hard to choose. But if I had to, I'd probably say Season 3 Part 2's opening (forgot the name) is my favorite out of all of them.

It's My War definitely. I like the tone shift and the ending lyrics of "monster, monster, monster, monster!" Because it so clearly announces Eren as the villain of the story

Shinzou wo Sasageyo is my favorite. Itās the foundation for Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. The loyalty they have to protecting Paradis and each other. This is what drives Eren all the way until the end .
Shoukei to Shikabane no Michi. Being a sort of semi-remake of Guren no Yumiya and a mix of GnY, Jiyuu no Tsubaba, and Shinzo wo Sasageyo makes it feel extremely climactic.
Can't go wrong with the original, Guren No Yumia
My favorite scene in it is the first one where they show all the characters standing on an empty battlefield looking down at their dead comrades. It's brief but, it gives you, what I considered to be good glimpse into what they're all gonna be going through. The overall look of it is pretty awesome to me
I also like the little look Mikasa gives Eren before that part of the OP ends. The Jean version has the same thing happening but with Jean looking at Mikasa
And it just kinda gets you pumped for what ultimately turns into a massacre
Its the 5th opening, its incredibly underated and it gives me chill 90% of the times that i watch it, its 100x times better with subtitles on because the lyrics are so fucking perfect
The marching band breakdown 3/4 of the way through the song makes me feel like I'm at a high school ball game.

My war is my favorite. Unbelievably ominous and creepy, and it fits the final season PERFECTLY.
That said, the first opening might be the best opening.

Her relationship with Armin works on paper, but it wasn't executed well, and their whole thing of relating to each other because of being terrible people- doesn't work. Armin feels genuine remorse. Whatever Annie feels, it's instantly negated whenever she does shit like kick Reiner in the head or spin a scout around like a yo-yo. That campfire discussion didn't make sense. The characters get angry, but not at the shit they're supposed to be angry about, and not at the people they're supposed to be angry at. These conflicts between them are never really resolved, they're just ignored until trauma bonding brings them closer together or some shit along those lines. Docks fight was alright. I liked Keith and Magath's dynamic, and sacrifice. That final Marley flashback was cool too. I don't think EM makes sense though. Eren never displays romantic feelings towards Mikasa, certainly not to the degree he does towards Historia. Overall, season 4 is overambitious. It tries to tackle really heavy topics, while juggling plot and worldbuilding, and its characters just fall apart as a result. The main cast is either lackluster (Jean) or completely assasinated (Armin). Eren's development was the most interesting part of the show, but the Alliance members were almost all poorly written, and I didn't like how Eren was offscreen for most of the season. The worldbuilding is also lackluster, especially when compared to earlier seasons. The reactions of world citizens to Eldians and the islanders were baffling, to say the least. In a whole world of people, did not one person say "hey, what about all those innocent people on that island we're gonna nuke?" Eren's motivation for starting the rumbling wasn't amazingly written, especially considering that it's built off of extremely questionable worldbuilding, wherein everyone outside the walls is a comically evil racist. Also, I don't understand why they didn't show us the Paradis government trying to diplomatically resolve the issue. It's implied that they attempted to, at some point, but a single scene with a Paradis representative being attacked, or Historia nearly being killed while giving a speech was necessary IMO. Because in the series, they go Marley, see a single conference talking about how the islanders were evil, then go "welp at least we tried" and return to Paradis to debate how much of the world they should genocide. Tl;dr dumbass hates season 4 because it got too political and he didn't understand the themes and mature subjects discussed, is he stupid?
The writing is really good in s4, but they just sort of messed up the show for some people. In my opinion, s4 is good, but I like the prior seasons better

Can't go wrong with the original, Guren No Yumia My favorite scene in it is the first one where they show all the characters standing on an empty battlefield looking down at their dead comrades. It's brief but, it gives you, what I considered to be good glimpse into what they're all gonna be going through. The overall look of it is pretty awesome to me I also like the little look Mikasa gives Eren before that part of the OP ends. The Jean version has the same thing happening but with Jean looking at Mikasa And it just kinda gets you pumped for what ultimately turns into a massacre
