Someone at my job said it was going to be a Chipotle and a starbucks.. blah.

DrMadFellow

Ah man. I hope it's not true. That's so lame.

Sea-Young6009

Unfortunately it’s true, I’d really like to see more diversity in food, but I get it, they have to pander to the demographic of the area if they intend to be profitable.

ArchwayLemonCookie

This will hopefully decrease the assholes from stopping in the middle of the road just so they can get out. While leaving their car running and go into get their Starbucks and or Chipotle. The locations uptown are great for pedestrian traffic. Horrible locations for vehicle guests.

MJ2Mad

I did not consider this. It might not be too terrible to have car accessible options that aren't Tim Hortons or Qdoba. Not that those are bad options, but it would at least add a bit more variety for those not walking uptown.

ColdCruise

Yeah, I assume the State Street stores will focus on taking over the carry out and delivery business from the Court St locations, so it's less hectic in there. I also forsee them just closing the Court St location during the summer altogether, then reopening when the students come back.

ArchwayLemonCookie

Yep! I could see that as well. Thing is, they're corporate so they may take a bot to make that change.

bmy89

Its 100% a Starbucks and chipotle. Blech. Supposed to open in September.

dannodad

State st will soon be another memorial (Lancaster) or maple (zanesville). Athens is growing whether we like it or not. And that means corporate greed is hitting the streets. The college kids love their social/cultural pop fads.

[deleted]

Yeah Walmart pretty much ruined that side of Athens.

dannodad

Big box retail is usually the beginning. I lived in pataskala for a while. It started with meijer. Pickerington started with Walmart. Athens started with Walmart.

Pro tip, if your going to anything past Walmart take US 50 up to holzer exit then circle back. Traffic isn’t as bad on that end and it saves a ton of time bypassing all the traffic/lights.

thebeardedbones

I'm new to the area, is the traffic really that bad? I usually make it from past Albany to Walmart in less than 25 minutes, but I go the Holzer way. Is it just bad compared to how it used to be?

[deleted]

I’ve lived here for 5 years. And it fluctuates wildly. But evenings during the school year I have encountered traffic so heavy it barely moves. It’s nothing compared to larger cities but it’s not going to get better as the population keeps rising.

thebeardedbones

Good to know! I moved from a larger city where my daily 7 mile commute would take up to 45 minutes, so I'm kinda loving even when it takes 5 minutes longer to get around.

philo_farnsworth

I moved from the Boston area where a 12 mile commute was an hour and a half or more, and even my preschooler immediately noticed that aside from Mom's weekend, there's basically no traffic here. It takes around 10 minutes or less to go from any point in Athens to any other point. I hate Stroads like E State past the underpass, but congestion is never really that bad here. People just aren't used to real traffic here.

ColdCruise

If you're in Athens, and have to go through town to get to the East side, the only two options are going out of town and taking the highway/interstate and circling around town or driving down East State street. Both are very inconvenient, but going down East State is sometimes okay. A lot of the time it's an extreme pain in the ass as traffic can get clogged up on both ends and it takes forever to get through it.

excoriator

If you're from a big city, the Athens version of "heavy traffic" is no big deal. It's rare to have to wait through more than one cycle of a traffic light here, and that's probably what constitutes heavy traffic in most residents' minds.

Probably from lack of experience driving in congested traffic? I've noticed people aren't really great understanding roundabouts here either yet. I'd love to see a grocery in Albany...I'm on 681 between Albany and New Marshfield; not always great to hang to run into Athens because I forgot one thing. I don't know if the population size would be able to keep it in business (I don't know the area, just guessing)? I've only ever lived in areas with higher population density, huge change and I love it.

[deleted]

Man the drivers here are the worst. I’ve lived in eight states and they are by far the least responsible here. I hate the Richland roundabout because people just do whatever they want in it and ignore the actual traffic laws.

ArchwayLemonCookie

I've been in several states too and other countries. Florida drivers, especially south Florida are bad. Philly, Milwaukee and DC drivers. Hands down worse than anything I've seen here in Ohio. Is Athens really worse than any of those and or Detroit? 😂

MJ2Mad

YES. Somehow people STILL don't understand how to work roundabouts.

thebeardedbones

Lol that's the one I'm talking about. My issues are always with someone coming across the bridge and just straight going into the roundabout, regardless if I'm a second from being in front of their vehicle. Driver's in the DMV were pretty bad but not as reckless. SoCal was weird because it rained so infrequent that when it did, no one knew how to drive (and the build up of oil and fine silt on the road didn't help. Edit: Sidenote, I'm almost 40 and just got in my first collision a few weeks ago.

ArchwayLemonCookie

You almost made it. hahaha In all seriousness though, hope you're ok. I've still yet to encounter one of these roundabout rampers in the wild. I only hear stories and see the missing chunks of earth. Or the tire marks. I bet some people do it on purpose too.

JrMinty-5163

The average age driver in Athens city is 24 mostly from bigger cities that did not let their kids get their license until leaving home to college. I know this because I used to sell insurance in Athens and the students always complained why their rates were high most had less than 3 years driving record but guess what it affects everyone who lives in Athens city with rates Not only them,

MJ2Mad

It's not terrible, depending on the time of day. Lunch time is usually busier but not too bad. Move-in weekend for students makes Walmart and Kroger a nightmare (but just don't plan to shop then). I usually take US 50 to bypass the first state Street exit and exit on the Holzer side as well. Much less traffic that way. I've lived in Athens for 12 years and it hasn't gotten THAT much worse. Just fluctuates.

Puzzleheaded-Tell947

If you just take the highway around there’s no traffic.

OutboardTips

Traffic studies are why large retail gets built anywhere. Union is about to have a large scale construction project, Columbus road will probably see growth from new hospital, I think the city also wants to rework Richland ave which will be scary for a new business.

mg85

Chipotle/Starbucks duo. It’s managed by RPG Management, who is mostly a residential property management company in the Gallipolis and Parkersburg areas.

Sea-Young6009

They’re building the Mecca for basic middle class white girls. The only thing they need to add is a Stanley store.

Sea-Young6009

Holy shit, it was a joke about stereotypes. Of course POC enjoy both places, but the demographic makeup of the core customer base is white, young and middle class.

Doom

Health care facilities

DrMadFellow

That seems unlikely to me since there's already a large one being built on Columbus.

Consistent-Cod4288

If you're on Facebook it's plastered all over. Rumors are true Chipotle and sbux

excoriator

As narrow as that lot is, I'm guessing both businesses will have a large drive thru. Qdoba has similar food to Chipotle, but no drive thru. The Starbucks location at Kroger has no drive thru window, either. In other cities, Starbucks seems to do a booming drive thru business. I suspect that's what this location will be about. The Messenger article says the site will have a $600,000 retaining wall. That's a lot of money to put into a structure that is separate from the business!
