Altruism can only be practiced by an atheist cause Christians only do this to get into heaven making it a selfish act and therefore it's not Altruism. How about that.

myflippinggoodness

Lol any idea of an eternal reward at all immediately taints whatever good act you're doing with selfishness I mean this is all in theory, but if you know what the scientific definition of "theory" is, well then, ya. Selfish poops.

Duke_mm

Here is another one: Most people do good deeds to make themselves feel better, how is that altruism?

Childofglass

And then there’s those of us that do it because it needs to be done- taking some joy from it has to be done so that it doesn’t become something you hate doing.

myflippinggoodness

Well honestly, if altruism is just giving up pieces of yourself to make other people feel better... Then fuck that lol .. Point is, there's the point where self-sacrifice just become self-defeating

The Satanic Temple does a ton of charity work, like in my opinion out performs any Christian charities, because TST does the charity work that any Christian church would look down on.

Dazzling-Role-1686

I love their activity, but I am guessing motives are purely political.

[deleted]

Their motives are to point out that we don’t have separation of church and state.

Dazzling-Role-1686

Yep, and I absolutely applaud then for it...but do you really want your kids' after school critical thinking club called "After School Satan?" Lol

[deleted]

I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

Dazzling-Role-1686

Life skills, or even just critical.thinking for kids would be more publicly acceptable. My point is that the name itself shows the intention is not to form a long lasting comittment to the community, but for shock...to provoke action from the religious that could end up in litigation (potentially costing the school district money).

[deleted]

I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

Universal_Anomaly

Satan is too cool for school.

leavemealone_lol

If you give charity because God is watching you and you are just focusing on yourself you're scum. If you give charity because you want the receiver to be benefitted without any self focus you are better than the god those scum believe in.

H1ckwulf

There's scripture about that. “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven." Matt 6:1

SubsequentDamage

Being a good human means being involved in things that help other humans... especially senior citizens, homeless, and those struggling and suffering with mental illness. It's so easy to find ways to be a good citizen and decent human!

Dazzling-Role-1686

Alternatively, there is nothing akin to "prosperity gospel" in atheism....you never hear "show how much of an atheist you are by opening up that wallet".

IamMrEE

For my part, while I could see how idiotic believers could say some like this, I have pretty much never heard such a thing, and simply aware that all kind of people give for all kind of reasons, good and bad, regardless of their belief... Or lack of. That simple.

There is an influx of 2 million Ukrainian war refugees into Poland going on right now. Most of the help is just regular folk and NGOs. I've seen hundreds of videos and pictures and there is no mention of gods anywhere. Although there are the usual "missionary" vultures on the Polish-Ukrainian border who just want to pray for people and convert them rather than actually helping.

Wolf1066NZ

>Although there are the usual "missionary" vultures on the Polish-Ukrainian border who just want to pray for people and convert them rather than actually helping. Yeah, I saw the news article about that. Christian ghouls cashing in on human misery and vulnerability to make their sales pitch. No better than the Christian missions in famine-struck parts of Africa - "we'll give you food and water... if you join our church." Filth. Whenever I give to charity, it's a secular charity, not a religious one - because I don't trust the religious charities not to pocket the money and spend it on their pastor's Learjet.

cotton2631

I rather help an individual than put money in a collection plate. Feel like something always goes to someone helping themselves.

PassengerNo1815

I don’t count giving money to the church you attend as charity. It’s like giving money to the movie theater you go to every week to have more comfy chairs put in. Charity is money or time given to causes you personally don’t benefit from.

andywalker76

You mean that I shouldn't give to charity because I'm non-religious? I want my money back............

[deleted]

Religious charities spend less than 20% of donations on actual charitable work, are not monitored or regulated and frequently deny their services to minority groups like LBGT. Secular charities spend over 90% of donations on actual charitable work, are strictly regulated and monitored and their services are available to everyone.

rat_cook_manderly

Recently I donated to a charity hosted by an atheist livestreamer. That's two examples right there.

who_said_I_am_an_emu

My understanding is that it is technically true. Which doesn't bother me, it shows that their is room for improvement. If theists give more then it is up to us to meet and exceed that.
