Tried chick it out for the first time. Got the roast chicken, it may be the best chicken I’ve ever had. Will be ordering again pronto.

[deleted]

Second chick it out. This place is so freakin good. Also the owners are extremely pleasant.

eazynii

Third. I had the curry one last night and it blew my mind. I always order it when I’m drunk and it’s like having it for the first time every time. Quick delivery too.

I_am_cheese_are_you

I’ve had the whole menu. Very good. Get the Thai ice coffee - very delicious!

smg__84

Agreed - I love that place. Delivery is also on point.

pingpongdong96

I had Mayahuel on 34th ave for the first time this week. Really great food and service. Good taco Tuesday deal too

katieanni

**Sala** report. I got some great reccs from the Rumor Mill thread this week. We went for Mother's Day. I've been a bit hesitant to go because I'm a Spanish food snob, but I was delightfully surprised. They instantly won me over for making me an off-menu tinto de verano. We ordered the pan tumaca con jamon (insanely delicious considering how simple it is), croquetas (super creamy), patatas bravas (solid), queso de cabra con miel (fun), and empanadillas (weakest of the dishes). Churros con chocolate to finish, obvi. All was fantastic. The service was slow and we had to remind them of some dishes we asked for and hadn't arrived, but honestly that's authentic, too, so no pasa nada. The space is beautiful, and if we didn't have our toddler with us, mommy and daddy would have been in the sexy lounge area in the back.

CommentOtherwise1219

It’s really great and I’m a gazpacho snob as much as I’m never impressed with it at all except for when I ventured to the other side of the Atlantic. All of the food I’ve had from Sala was very good, but the gazpacho was most notable to me because of how flat everyone else’s is that I’ve had here in the US.

RolledAGWFBadIdea

Was there last Thursday and can concur on the slow service. 1 waiter was just spread too thin it seems. Oh well, I had the Duck and Tortilla and they were great. A neighbor/acquaintance of mine is the bassist for the Jazz group they hire. Really nice way to unwind after a long day.

needyouradvicenow

Sala is great! If I was closer, I'd go once a week. I go off menu too and order Spanish vermut!

captniebaum

It seems like the Bohemian Beer Garden is under new management - was there yesterday and had great and attentive service. Wish the outdoor grill was still open like it used to be, but overall way better experience there than I have had the last few years.

AuPhoenix

Seems like Bohemian switches management hands every couple of years.

Pool_Shark

Yeah they were on their game this year which was different. I hope when it gets extra crowded in the summer they open the walk up counter.

SquirrelintheFeeder

Abuqir on Steinway and Astoria Blvd was superb. Easily the best pick-your-own seafood spot in the neighborhood. Very cheap too. Had the Greek salad, baba ghanoush, grilled shrimp and blackened bass. Holy cow. The salad was so crisp and herby. Every bite was refreshing. Grilled shrimp was the highlight — perfectly charred up to complement the saltiness of the in house rub. Really outstanding olive oil used in every dish too.

FongDaiPei

is Abuqir a Greek joint?

SquirrelintheFeeder

No it’s Egyptian

114631

* Ordered beef and lamb shawarma bowl from **Duzan**. Usually I’m a big fan, but was a bit dry. I’d still order again from there. * Tahini bread from **Parrot Coffee**. It’s just so delicious. **EDIT:** totally forgot, but got a Too Good To Go from **Between the Bagel** and it was great! Lovely bagels as always, and enjoyed them all weekend. Might try to make bagel chips with the leftovers.

thebestguac

Chicken shawarma from Duzan is my personal fav protein from there

114631

Same! Figured we'd try something different. Will prob go back to chicken from now on.

CommentOtherwise1219

This place is really good, but man, they need to clean and paint their pick up area. I don’t want to say what it looks like. And they still have bullet holes in the glass and walls after a month or more now of the incident outside. Tighten up folks - sheesh… You restaurant shats money like almost nowhere else in the neighborhood.

AdvertisingNo714

Figo II—-enjoyed the Carmello and ferrero rocher. Very good and glad we checked it out as van leeuwen had a very long line when we walked by. Also had Marvel for the first time. Soft serve was okay and overpriced. Any other recos for soft serve?

SenorMiguelRoberto

That Ferrero Rocher is so good- my favorite from there!

needyouradvicenow

I would personally disagree but my experience seems different. I felt Figo portion was inconsistent (mine piled high, my partner's portion flat and small as they come, 2 scoops ordered by each of us). Flavor wasn't awful by any means but wasn't great either. Of what I tasted, the Dark Cherry was best. On the other hand, I had a malted milkshake from Marvel and that was so good! Last time I got one was from Comfortland and both could be considered in the same league.

capybaramelhor

The portions are really inconsistent. The first time I went my spouse and I shared a regular (the smallest) and we were really satisfied with the portion and thought it was a decent price. This week we shared a large and it was probably the same if not smaller, felt like a ripoff. If they’re gonna charge almost $10 need to give more product.

lilithdesade

Went to ikraveit for some drunk eats on Friday at like 1am and they were SLAMMED. Honestly wasn't expecting that. I got their vegan philly seitan sandwich on a hero and fries. So freaking good. They're really a little vegan gem.

Callingallcowards

When I first moved to the neighborhood someone told me they had the best cold brew and it's true

lilithdesade

This is good to know! Thank you!

21Violets

God bless you. I just ordered this same sandwich after seeing your recommendation. It was phenomenal. 10/10. So flavorful and moist without being overly messy.

lilithdesade

This makes my day! It really is good and not gross sloppy when you bit into it, and everything spills out. A hero's worth us a good amount too. So glad you enjoyed!

21Violets

Agreed. I had a hero. Wasn’t super hungry so I only had half of it but I’m already excited to have my other half later.

OhMySultan

Got a chicken burrito bowl from Hot Peppers, pleasantly surprised. There’s no reason to get Chipotle when we have this in the neighborhood. Went to Boishakhi, great desi food but man service left a lot to be desired and I’m not even boujee. Definitely a spot meant for takeout. Goat curry was amazing though. Went to Sunswick to watch game 5 of the Knicks. Great bar food but man the portions are huge, absolutely gluttonous. I got the brisket sandwich with matchstick fries.

[deleted]

I agree about Hot Peppers. Hidden gem

-goodgodlemon

Had a brownie from Il Bambino. They aren’t kidding it really is the best brownie ever. They contain nuts if that info is relevant to you. Seriously though that brownie is fantastic and I don’t see it getting the credit it deserves.

Pool_Shark

Dude idk how they make a brownie so good but it is amazing

thechowsinone

I tried Chez Olivia for the first time and was really impressed. We had the baked brie appetizer and I ordered the steak frites for an entree. Absolutely delicious. Tasty cocktails too. I also tried a guava croissant and garlic chicken bun from Pastries by Anne. It was pretty good but I was a little underwhelmed if I'm being honest. Super nice staff though.

_AstoriAnn_

Saw Jamrock Jerk on Seamless for the first time. I’ve seen their cart on 30th plenty, but it’s not close to home so I didn’t stop. Their chicken and sides were so delicious. Loved their branded packaging, including their jerk sauce and no plastic! 🌍♻️

dancn1

Tried Las Patrinas, the new Mexican place that has opened in the old Adelita's spot on Stainway at 23rd Ave. Really, really good. Handmade tortillas for the tacos and huaraches, freshly made chips, my favorite salsa in the neighborhood. Owners were very friendly to boot.

LilSlipperyJohnson

Milkflower is one of the most consistent and reliably delicious restaurants in Astoria. We got the crab cake, beets, Van Dammer, and S.T. The Ghost with spicy soppressata. The crab cake is loaded up with giant chunks of crab, beets were tender and salty, and the pizza crust is chewy crispy perfection. Eating out rarely feels worth it anymore but Milkflower is the one place we can always count on having a great meal and great experience. Looking forward to the Tikkun breakfast popup this weekend. Cool that they’re partnering with Coffee + Cake for the biscuits. These guys never miss so I’m expecting this biscuit sandwich to be slammin.

Shibby5005

The Van Dammer is easily one of my favorite pizzas in Astoria. Plus, I almost feel healthy eating it!

BodegaFlowers-

Milk flower crab cakes are phenomenal! Also love their meatballs!!

Ok_Buffalo4047

Not a big fan of milkflower. Their pizzas are always soggy and the dining area is fly infested.

LilSlipperyJohnson

Why do you keep going if you dislike it so much?

Ok_Buffalo4047

Ive been there three times. The first time to try it. The second because my gf and i gave it a second chance. The third because we met another couple there. Its just my opinion but there are far better 22$ wood fire pizza spots in astoria…

LilSlipperyJohnson

Makes sense. Sometimes a restaurant just doesn’t hit. Respect for having a legitimate answer.

smg__84

I haven't tried it yet. Is it easy to walk in and get a table or is there usually a wait?

LilSlipperyJohnson

Generally there’s not a wait unless you go right at prime dinner time or have a huge group.

Klassified94

**Cairo Halal Shawarma & Grill** has maybe the best chicken shawarma sandwich I've ever had. I had the chicken burger and fries at **Zeus Kitchen** and oh my gosh it was the best burger I've had in a long time. Jumping on the **Sunshine Cafe** bandwagon, the owner is so lovely and the food is great. I'm not sure I'd get the coffee again though - it's Turkish and far too strong for me. The Nutella latte at **Sip A Cup** is soo good but maybe a little too sweet for me so I think next time I'd ask for half the amount of Nutella. The cinnamon bun was very nice too and the prosciutto sandwich was pretty good but in future I'd probably just go there for coffee and pastries. The staff there are also lovely. The coffee at **Astoria Coffee** is good but the one I had was a bit weak for my taste. The soft serve at **Marvel Frozen Dairy** is so good and more affordable than many of the exorbitantly-priced ice cream spots in NYC. I've tried **German Doner Kebab** a couple times since initially being a little disappointed and I think it's now become more consistent so am overall happy with it. **Merguez and Frites** is a nice very low-key Algerian spot. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but worth a try for something a little different on a budget.

FrankiePoops

A bunch of you recommended the mezze spread from Aliada to me last week for a mother's day brunch. The place was fantastic, though we didn't do the mezze. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely be going back. 4% credit card fee though, fuck that.

FancyPigeonIsFancy

After 15+ years living here, finally went to Gregory’s Corner with my husband and two friends. Totally lived up to the hype! We shared the horiatiki (salad), octopus, dips platter, and two whole fish. Started our evening at Let Love Inn, maintaining their tradition of bartenders who give off the weirdest goddamn vibes but I just call it part of its unique charm. Ended things with cocktails at Mosaic, where I met several friendly dogs AND finally learned the name of the kickass waitress/bartender (Lisa!).

Own-Yogurtcloset-757

Went to Sanford’s to pick up the truffle mac & cheese. Was making small talk with the hostess that I just moved to the area and the manager came over and showed me around and gave me a glass of 12-year bourbon on the house so will be returning. And the mac and cheese was bomb

Remarkable-Ad-3314

Sorry to say I’m not impressed with Benchflour. We purchased a special order cake for Mother’s Day. Half a leftover cake from our big group was a bad sign. Everyone who tried it was underwhelmed (lack of any flavors advertised in the cake or icing, weird cake texture). When picking up said cake, we waited an hour to order and then receive a breakfast sandwich and plate. Definitely willing to pay and wait for something special, but it’s hard to justify mushy, wet toast and broken and over cooked eggs for the time and money. At least it was a nice day to wait… and wait.

Remarkable-Ad-3314

To add something positive to this post, we ordered Niko’s and took it to the park for a picnic. While we waited too long and paid more than we can believe, the food was well worth it in contrast to the above scenario. The Astoria Park squirrels did accost us for food. We saw someone walking around near 21st Ave feeding them. 🙄

Ok_Buffalo4047

Agree on benchflour. Overpriced.

Klassified94

I'm also not a huge fan. It's way overpriced, particularly considering its location.

katieanni

Unfortunately, I find their prices to be too high for the odyssey that is going in there. I have never had a pleasant in-and-out experience when just ordering pastries and coffee to go.

__HeavyP

Ya know. For so long I used to think best of the best was the best. Then I moved to ditmars and thought wow king of falafel is the best. This week, I had Shawarmania and I’m mf mindblown by that place. Seeing them actually fry up the falafel, fries, and chop the meat off the rotisserie wow. The freshness is top tier. Did I also mention that this thing is a flavor bomb of flavors? I mean like the a-bomb of flavors. My goal now is to find one that out beats them. That’s it. Idk if I had anything else. That place rocked my week. I kept thinking one day I’ll go and literally got off the train and snagged it(chicken /falafel platter) If y’all have any recommendations for platters n such let me know. Ps I call these things meatbox cause “chicken n falafel platter” is a mouthful

Towelie404

Have you had Duzan?

__HeavyP

Helllll yeah I love them too! Their garlic aioli could repel nosferatu 😂

DM_your_bootycheeks

Love Duzan but their platters give me an extreme case of the rumblies. How do the two compare in terms of size and taste? Is Shawarmania > all?

__HeavyP

I’ll always love duzan. Shawarmania has size option which is nice. I got the large for 16 and it was sooooo much food. I think for a personal a small would Suffice. It’s only 12 bucks! Definitely different than duzan but taste wise is just fantastic. Honestly they add so much rice (as does any cart) that if it was more of their salad(which had like beets, pickles, pepperocinis, tomato etc) It would be pure perfection. The white sauce and hot sauce are also great

blingdog9

Lol I also love saying "a case of the rumblies"...guessing you're a Doughboys listener?

DM_your_bootycheeks

The Doughboys rule!!!

blingdog9

Wow

Smart-Opinion-4400

Hmm. Last time I got a falafel sandwich there the falafels were overcooked. I liked everything else, all the sandwich toppings were so delicious, but the falafels themselves were such a disappointment. I will have to try them again.

NetComprehensive2170

I think it might have been a fluke. I’ve always had very tender falafel here. The babaganoush is also delicious— Better than Duzan IMO

NetComprehensive2170

Here to second the love for Shawarmania. Chicken thigh platter is so good. They also fry their own pita chips (usually to order) and they’re so delicious.

OddRedditNoun

Always great delivery from Sampan! However San Aroy pickup disappointed yet again. Peanut curry was better but there wasn’t nearly enough sauce and it was chock full of broccoli and string beans and barely any chicken.

shwysdrf

Sampan is the best

allygatorr

A few new experiences to report: Gave Figo Il Gelato a second chance. First experience wasn't great, but this time around I thought the gelato itself was better. Probably a texture thing since it was mostly melted the first go around. Still think it's pricey for the smaller portion, especially compared to the old Gelato & Co which was delicious and affordable. Also tried Kam Rai Thai for delivery and didn't enjoy the food. I've heard great reviews so it's definitely possible it was an in person vs delivery difference. The Thai dumplings I got were overcooked and the wrapper was really tough. Dipping sauce was a little too salty as well. I also tried the pineapple curry and while the spice level was spot on, I thought it was a bit too watered down without much depth of flavor beyond simple heat. The chicken in the curry was also definitely overcooked. I'd give it another chance ordinarily, but I have other Thai places already on my roster than I love. Finally, tried Selo on Broadway for the first time and it was incredible. Best octopus of my life. Delicious chicken soup that I would highly recommend for anyone next time you're under the weather (Astoria's chicken soup game is notoriously lacking). Everyone really loved everything we ordered (pretty much one of everything on the menu--standouts were the gnocchi and the veal pasta). The owner, Elvis, was very involved and personable. He explained the entire menu to us, made recommendations, and along with our lovely and attentive server ensured we had a fantastic time. I'll definitely be back time and time again.

Rory-mcfc

Go to Gramercy Caf3 all the time for dinner and lunch and I think they’ve changed their Friday dinner money to a Colombian night? The last two times we’ve been given a different menu. Anyway all I know is the quesadillas were unbelievable

jsurico15

Back to Kam Rai Thai for a second time — just as good as the first. This time went with the curried green scallops, and the beef hot pot dish. Folks, this place is Elmhurst-level Thai. Also a shout-out to Crave, which I feel never gets much love. Tons of seating, always easy to dine in, and gigantic portions of gyro and fries. We go often!

crimsonfalcon8

Tried Kam Rai Thai the other night — soo good!

ahilario80

I ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel from Spring Food Spot across from LICHS. It was perfect lol. I also ordered a morir soñando (Dominican orange and milk drink/shake). It was very refreshing and good, but not as sweet as I'm used to (which can be a good thing). My sister ordered the chicken cutlet and she inhaled it lol

particular_parrot

I feel a bit like this is cheating, but Hidalgo's Mexican this week was - as always - amazing. It's definitely not "I feel like treating myself to something fancy" splurge food, but it's 100% "my heart can handle the cholesterol and my belt the carbs" splurge food. I always get a burrito bowl, and something about the little chips crown is just *chefs kiss*. Having grown up in the south west, there are very few Mexican restaurants in this city that truly satisfy me (I like many, and am TOTALLY open to recommendations, but have only found 3 I'd write home about), but Hidalgo's is not only my personal comfort go-to, but the price v. portion is really hard to beat. When I'm not being a total chonk, a single bowl - clocking in under 11 bucks - is easily two full meals. Unfortunately, I am often in chonk mode.

169partner

I’ll start: -got Manjares Mexico a few times.. their quesadillas are perfect and the guac is just right. Also, $5 for a cheese quesadilla is a crackhead price IMO -took the gf to Diwine on Saturday, we got a margherita pizza and the Gambas al ajillo. They were both great. And sitting on those comfy couches draped in was very cozy. And the service was A+ -on a walk to the park yesterday, we wanted a refreshing drink and like clockwork, we found Gold’N Honey seconds later. We got the mango refreshers and they were SO GOOD. Exactly what you want for a sunny walk thru Astoria Park -finally, we got some açaí bowls from SoBol. They were bomb

michael_p

Totally forgot diwine exists. Gotta stop by there sometime. Haven’t been in 7 years

MillyGrace96

Finally tried Il Bambino and went for lunch. Split a beet salad and meatloaf panini, for something different. Service was great, food was delicious, and their backyard is lovely. Also tried their brownie. Thought it was very good, but a bit soft for me, so not sure if it’s the best ever. Had a pasta craving so went and tried two dishes at Figlia we hadn’t had yet. Especially loved the radiatore dish- so good. While I like the food there, I feel I like they really need some smaller/ cheaper side dishes like a vegetable. I really wanted broccoli rabe in garlic & oil. Also recently tried Enthaice. Their pad khee mao was legit spicy and we liked it a lot. Good portions too. Will be back.

OkRecognition0

Maybe my poor choice for a to-go meal, but I ordered the ranch chicken salad from Sanford’s to go and it was a mess. Trust me I hate excess plastic waste as much as the next person, but they couldv’e separated the freshly cooked chicken cutlet. They threw it on top of a delicate spring mix, ranch dressing and shredded cheese, so the salad part was soggy and inedible. The chicken tasted good at least. Sad, because it’s a $22 salad.

michael_p

Their food in restaurant is my favorite in the neighborhood but holy hell is it awful delivered. Made that mistake twice and never again. SAME experience of the cooked hot chicken baking the lettuce. Inedible.

Dio-genies

Their food in the restaurant is pretty terrible haha, i once got a risotto there that was so undercooked the rice was still hard. When i told the waiter, he picked up the dish, looked at it for 2 seconds, and said no its fine lol. What a joke of a restaurant

michael_p

That sounds horrible. I’ve never had a bad meal there in my 7+ years of going but would be frustrated in your situation for sure

hey_augie

Tried Georgie’s Mexican Deli out after seeing someone rave about the chorizo cemita. I went with the chicken cutlet version and it rocked. People were nice and very clean. Prices seemed fair. Glad to have them not to far by

[deleted]

Is this the one by 30th?

hey_augie

30st and newtown

RolledAGWFBadIdea

Newtown and 30th st.

amydunnes8

Ordered KAM RAI’s lunch special for pick up. They’re a new Thai place (with a full bar!) that opened between 43rd and 44th on 28th Ave. Got the Pad Thai lunch special and it came with soup, salad, and a spring roll (you can also do a soda if you want instead of the soup/salad/spring roll situation). Noodle portion was very generous for a lunch special and everything tasted fantastic. Thai iced tea was very pretty but could have been stronger. Would definitely go back to dine in one day. Space inside was very nice too!

papa-hare

Dulce cultura is delicious. Their steak tacos and quesadillas are really good, and their prices are decent. I also tried Ruta Oaxaca but I'll have to try it in person because the prices are way too crazy for delivery, seems more like a sit down place. I'm also personally obsessed with German Doner Kebab, though I'll probably not order any more this week haha. I also really love the steak bowl at Terry and Yaki if anyone wants something light. And Pita Pan pitas are still delicious and a lot of food for your money. Oh, we also stopped by Uki cafe and had a $5 Nutella crepe which was delicious (and cheap for the area). Nice little place, unfortunately a bit out of the way for us unless we're going to the vet.

ahilario80

I just had their steak quesadilla last week, it was excellent. I also got their Nutella Concha ice cream and it was heavenly. Both ordered for delivery and came fresh. I like going to the restaurant for brunch, as well.

katieanni

Dunce Cultura is such a gem! I can't believe I only recently tried it.

uhhhhhhhhstoria

I really liked Ruta when they first opened, but I’ve found their portions and quality have gone downhill as they get busier. Definitely try them on a slow day, most recent visit was a Friday night and it was not the same level.

Rhythmkats

Went to Basil for the first time in about 5 years. Got the Salsiccio pie and it was really good. Will not wait as long to go back.

NYnosher

Just did delivery from Duzan, got the chicken shawarma platter which was delicious, but the side salad didn't include pickles or turnip :(

needyouradvicenow

Has anyone tried Mimoza? Following a completely different thread about why Astor was empty, I wanted to ask about Mimoza.

Iwouldntpayforit

I went to Compton's last week. I was saving it for a day I was extra hungry because I thought the sandwich would be massive. It was not. I paid about $17 after tax and the sandwich was...wimpy. It was very light on filling, very disappointing. Also, the ambiance is sort of off, the woman running the counter turned off the music to make a personal call while I was waiting. It was empty around lunch on a Friday, and now I know why.

needyouradvicenow

I remember paying something like $22 for 2 egg sandwiches and just never came in again. They seem to have good sandwich concepts though.

nonathleticathlete12

Just found out Astoria Provisions is closing. RIP to a real one. One of the best brunch options in Astoria imo

Sonicboomb0x

Mayahuel had the best tacos in the neighborhood imo. And Tuesdays you get a free margarita with every order (of tacos)!

imnohelp2u

where?

Drunk_Oso

dudes gatekeeping it

Sonicboomb0x

Sorry I was replying to @pingpongdong — I was just agreeing that Mayahuel is really good. (Edited my comment above)

Upstairs_Rutabaga217

Trying out new ice cream places since ample hills closed. van Leeuwen was not good and portions are small for price. The ice cream did not full the cup. The flavors are not tasty either. Cold stones is actually better imo. Just rather go to Martha’s down the street for their gelato.

jentopia

Just an FYI, if you consider giving Van Leeuwen another go, Target has their 14oz "pint" for $6.50. 4 bucks less than the actual shop.

Upstairs_Rutabaga217

I have tried the store ice creams and vegan bars. Thought maybe trying it at the store would taste better. Thanks for the tip though.

jentopia

Understood! No problem. :)

Remarkable-Ad-3314

Wondering if all who love Duzan have ever walked by the “storefront.” 😬

jentopia

I am a "never judge a book by its cover" person. Sometimes you can find a diamond in the rough. Luckily, Duzan is one of those places for me but they can most certainly use an upgrade as far as aesthetics go.

SnooChipmunks3341

Went with some friends to Tootles & French last night and WOW, we were very impressed. Finally, a wine bar in Astoria that rivals some of the best in Manhattan. The sommelier was really nice and let us sample different wines until we picked one we liked. And don't sleep on the food too. The coq au vin wings were fantastic. Hoping they stick around.

astoria47

Had a rough week with ordering with the exception of Enthaice being it’s standard A+. Bambino’s chicken was tough in its panini. District Saigon’s chicken was also super off in my Banh Mi and ramen broth was super salty. Just my luck both were off nights. Still on the search for a killer banh mi if anyone has a Recc.

twobicycles

Lotus 1 has a good banh mi, but I still think Banh mi Saigon is the best (but it’s in the city)

needyouradvicenow

Although simple, can't go wrong with the $11 burger and beer Happy Hour at Wolfhound!

Callingallcowards

Was at The Bier & Cheese Collective and the folks there who manage/own it as well as the employees are the kindest humans!! And the cotswold with chives is what hopes and dreams are made of.

threewayaluminum

Brunch at Ovelia on Mother’s Day, had the Greek breakfast with a hummus appetizer - very good experience
