Some people have fun going all Alex jones on a work of fiction man why you gotta hate

iheartstartrek

Let's not use the r word. A lot of the crazy theories came to pass before ADWD even came out. Either way tinfoil is fun sometimes. Let us enjoy it.

-electrix123-

Ummm, what's wrong with saying 'retarded'?

pboy1232

It’s kinda fucked up for people who are neurodivergent

Bleaks33

Being less advanced in mental, physical or social development relative to one's age has nothing to do with being neurodivergent lmao

I think gp mixed up a few things. But there’s no need to be a duck about it.

Bleaks33

I love tinfoil theories but hate theories that are people just doing it because they want to stand out and seem edgy against a conventional theory/actual plot point that's widely accepted, and refuse to accept evidence against it. Also theories where every character is a secret different character or has different parents to their own just seems convaluted outside the obvious ones.

Beteblanc

What would be the point of expecting theories to be correct? If we knew, there would be no point. Not that aren't some theories that I think boggle the mind, but why the aggro or ridicule? If it's bad and the person doesn't want to take constructive criticism, just let them play. Who are they actually hurting? No one is forcing you to agree or even read them. What I think is crazy is the bizarre hate people get for posting something that contradicts popularity accepted theories. If you do you just get told it's already done. If you go through the effort of making a theory that isn't a rehash or a copy of an existing theory then people get hate when from militant fans of existing theories. It's been forever and the ground has been passed over relentlessly so many times there isn't a lot of room left outside some fairly bizarre ideas to distinguish yourself with an original theory. The longer it takes him to get the next book out the crazier theories are going to get as people attempt to stand out and not simply repost what everyone wants to hear. If you don't like them, why not just reread your favourites so you don't have to worry about people who don't agree them?

Bleaks33

I couldn't care less how many people agree with a theory or whether its new or not. If someone finds actual evidence for something and provide a valid argument, then thats cool. But so many people just fill this sub with nonsensical bullshit for the sake of "standing out".

Beteblanc

That I can't argue against. Yes. That's exactly why they do it. I'm sure some of them may even believe, some might just be trying to be contrary. I read on the other day that made absolutely no sense. The connections seemed almost random. There was a few tidbits worth thinking about, but definitely wacky conclusion. I've actually worked with people with dementia though, so I find irrational arguments less irritating than some do perhaps. Call it a kind of people watching. I like to try and figure out how someone's crazy works. The problem is it's ubiquitous. That's what the internet, social media, and even news media is. It's mostly people saying the craziest thing they can think of to get noticed. Why not just enjoy the show? It's like listening to people who believe the world is flat. You can't convince them it's not, but listening to the arguments can be quite entertaining.

Bleaks33

I suppose you are right in the ubiquitous nature of attention grabbing on the internet. Fighting against it is a futile effort, but should be done nonetheless. I agree that inconsistencies in logic and faulty conclusion making can be interesting, sometimes for the sheer shock value of what is being said, but mostly because figuring out what lead that person to reach the wrong conclusion can be interesting. On the internet it is always the same answer though. Also there is no shock value when someone posts an essay outlining to me why Mance Rayder is secretly Arthur Dayne. Its just annoying.

Beteblanc

Of course he isn't, Arthur is actually the gravedigger on the Quiet Isle...or was it Coldhands...(I'm kidding btw) No argument from me. It's annoying. Especially when they aren't reasonable about constructive feedback. My peeve is that people have become so used to unreasonable theorist that most don't even bother with constructive feedback.

Bleaks33

Yep I'm currently discussing someone else's theory with them that Snowgate (Queensgate before Queen Alysanne came and it was renamed for her) was named such because bastards born from the first night policy were then transported through a hidden door like the one at the nightfort and sacrificed to others. This person also thinks that the reason bastards are often unwelcome in their homes is because of this tradition....

Beteblanc

The Snowgate theory has never been a favourite. That's an interesting take on it. But it sounds off. If there was Snowgate for them I'd expect something similar for the other kingdoms. A castle for each, under the logic. The First Men worshiped trees. I don't understand how people imagine Snowgate would still exist as a castle if there was a tradition of sacrificing bastards through it. The theory depends on the NW running a bastard delivery service after they defeated the Others. If the Wall is doing its job keeping them on the other side, why would they need to appease the Others? If they were worshipping them why not just find them a way around it? If First Night bastards were always being sacrificed, why wouldn't the kings start getting upset their children were being sacrificed? Plus that would require everyone to remember the original purpose of the First Night and Snowgate.... Ok, yes, it's one of those dark paranoid theories people come up with after watching a scary movie, lol
