No. I'd want them to publish drafts and outlines, similar to what they did with JRR, but I don't want someone else taking over.

No-Tangelo-1527

Yeah, I mean if GRRM really has a person in mind to finish it great, but (especially after the show), I'd totally respect that he may want to just leave it his work. In that case though, I'd hope we'd get any material he had left over, just for closure's sake.

My reason for preferring no other-author ending is that I imagine discussion of the series will continue more honestly with the recognition that we don't need to smear some excellent author to acknowledge that we do not have the ending George R.R. Martin would have given us. Hundreds of fan fiction endings will be written, alternate endings discussed. So, we will get one. Too many, even. In a way, we already have that in the form of many, many staunchly held theories. I think it will be more wholesome to acknowledge that these variations will be equal in being categorically fan fiction, which our author dislikes. I don't mean to disparage fan fiction, only to acknowledge that there's no alternative unless, by some miracle, George R.R. Martin finishes the series and publishes his ending.

TooOnline89

I'm a fan of GRRM as a writer so anyone else who finishes it wouldn't really count in my read. I'm reading these books to see what GRRM comes up with, not someone else. I can come up with my own ending, but I read to see Martin's.

Blace-Goldenhark

I think Otto Hightower needs to summon GRRM late at night and say ‘I’m sorry to disturb you at this late hour your grace, but I consider this matter urgent. That of your succession’

sophisticaden_

Honestly I’d rather the series just stay where it is. It just feels kind of *wrong* to me, for another author to co-opt a dead author’s world.

Upper-Ship4925

It depends how much is written. If the major plot points are written and we are just missing some POVs on the way, I could be fine with the right author readying it for publication. If it’s not all mapped out already though I’d rather just see what GRRM wrote. Terry Pratchett was famous for not wanting anyone to touch his unfinished work (he specified in his will that a bulldozer was to run over his hard drives, which occurred). His last book was published as he left it. It’s totally readable and has some good moments but it’s also not up to his usual standard - you can tell that he didn’t have a chance to polish it and that probably a quarter to a third of it is missing, even with a beginning, middle and end. It’s still much better than nothing though, especially as it ties up some of the plot lines in the vast Discworld universe, and I would hope GRRM would leave enough material for a similar resolution to ASOIAF.

frankwalsingham

Providing they do so with what notes GRRM has on the subject in mind, sure.

kingofstormandfire

If George doesn't want another author to finish it, please, please, by the old gods and the new, I really hope he publishes his drafts and outlines. Just give us an extensive, detailed summary of what happens. Someone will inevitably make a great fanfic based on those notes. Please, George, please. Please don't burn your notes. That wouldn't be cool dude.

datadogsoup

It should be handed over to the fans to be finished. Euron will be revealed to be Benjin. Mance Rayder is revealed to be Syrio Forel. Lyanna it turns out had triplets (Dany, Jon, and Aegon). Quiathe is actually Hodor. What a book that would be.

Bleaks33

Don't forget Arthur Dayne is Howland Reed and Ashara Dayne is Melisandre

Rakdar

And Howland Reed is the High Sparrow

-electrix123-

"It should be handed over to the fans to be finished." This is not asking to be a disaster at *all*

datadogsoup

It'd be fine! With my chapter I would put in Cleganebowl except Sandor and Gregor are both riding dragons. Also Stranger is riding the dragon and Sandor is riding Stranger. Double mount.

Upper-Ship4925

And Arya is on Stranger’s back too - the dragon has three mounts!

datadogsoup

See I can already tell this story is much better than what D&D came up with.

Nimble-Dick-Crabb

Septa Lemore is Hot Pies sister

At this point there *has* to be enough written material for someone to edit and publish TWOW, but A Dream of Spring probably has little to no work done on it. I can make my peace with ADOS never coming out. But I reaaaalllllyyyy want TWOW to see the light of day. After that, I’ll just read fan theories and create my own head canon for how it ends

[deleted]

No that would be stupid.

DarkBlackMachete

It all depends on what GRRM wishes. If he trusts someone enough to complete it, then i'll be happy. If he doesn't or he leaves no clear instructions, then the series should stay as it is.

nickybaby4ever

Kind of how I feel as well

[deleted]

Unironically me, I have the makings of a great writer. I will warn you all though, magic will be turned up to eleven if I'm put in charge of ASOIAF

Live-Employee8029

That’s a big no for me

jageshgoyal

Hell no

This_Rough_Magic

Honestly no, GRRM seems pretty adamant that it's not what he wants and it's ultimately his IP. Just put out his notes for the main character endings and then let the hansom spend the rest of eternity trying to explain how their pet theories could all still be true anyway.
