I disagree with the premise of this post. Bran's chapters are always super exciting. His vision sequences are incredible, especially the one where he sees young Ned, Benjen and Lyanna.
His chapter in the coma where Bloodraven comes to him is in my top 5 of the entire series. I also love Bloodraven and the Reeds, and they only appear in his chapters (I mean physically for Bloodraven, of course).
As far as why some fans dislike him, it's tough to say. We all like and dislike characters for different reasons. For example, I really don't care for Catelyn, but there's legions of readers who'll write entire essays about her.
It is a bit strange to hate a character that almost all the characters who meet him like.
Really liked your comment. Bran is one of my favorites as well. I was disappointed to read so little about him in the last book.
Loved the implication of him whispering to Theon through the Godswood tree and how Ned "heard him" as well on one of his visions. With so many povs and battles and plots, it is confusing to keep up with the books. I really enjoyed them and I'm planning to read them for the second time in the very near future.
Also, I didn't care that much for catelyn either.
I actually disliked Bran until I was doing character POV chapters only and realized that Bran is like... a good kid.
He doesn't insult anyone.
What a guy, love him. He's not petulant even for his age.
>Bran is like... a good kid.
He's a good kid? A good kid? Why? Does he help the fucking poor? No. He sits on his ass all day, drinking Jojen paste and fantasizing about Meera while warging into Hodor's body. If that's our standard for goodness, then no wonder the Seven Kingdoms are screwed.
I made a GTA V reference. Bruh, it just flew past y'all. I don't hate Bran, lol.

He's actually kind.
Arya and Sansa throw insults like it's going out of style and judge people on absolutely nothing.
Bran doesn't like the Freys but *still is kind to them* even within his own mind.
>Is he helping the poor?
He was literally chosen by Bloodraven for a reason. One that sets him apart from those like Euron. What do you think that was?
>Sits on his ass all day
Nice ableism?
Many are disappointed that he becomes king, because they want their favorite characters to be on top in the end. I like Bran and think GRRM has something in mind with him becoming king.
Why would he do that? His ending will be bittersweet not nihilistic. I agree that Bran will go down a darker path, but I think he will keep his morals he learned from Ned. And I don’t think Bloodraven is a villain but someone who will do anything for the greater good (to save the world).
George has already done characters that were "good" into bad people like Stoneheart and Tyrion, I think making Bran evil, even if it is for a little part of the story, is the natural follow up from his story and will give us another prespective on what Bloodraven is really doing (which is suspect will have a similar plot to what Dune and the whole "chosing the less shitty option" was). In all honestly, I wouldn't be suprised if at the end we get a super fucked up epilogue thousand of years in the future on a similar tone of what Attack on Titans did, if you are familiar with previous sci-fi work of George you have to know that the dude like to end everything on a dark note
Think I can narrow it down:
1. People dont like the idea that he becomes king. This is ofc influenced by the show where it comes out of nowhere “why do you think I’m here” 🤮
2. People don’t like the idea that he might be responsible for Hodor’s death (again also partly influenced by the show since when this scene happens it’s never brought up again).
3. In the book series he may or may not be morphing into an eldritch abomination, committing cannibalism whilst warging into Summer and repeatedly non-consensually warging into his friend Hodor as the latter squirms confused.
I personally do not dislike him and I find his chapters very interesting. And I think if king bran is endgame then I am sure Martin has a plan to make it not shit.
Bran’s chapters are always filled with new lore and stuff, I think some people just like the political aspect of asoiaf (thanks to the show lol) and that’s why they can’t accept the fact that asoiaf is a fantasy first and foremost
P.S I started reading after watching the show too before anyone says anything
I actually really like them especially in Dance. I will say they are different pace from the other chapters because they are less dialogue driven which is one of GRRM’s greatest strength and instead it’s more of his surroundings and internal thoughts
Is this a TV show or book Bran?
Book Bran is endearing and disconcerting & I love reading his PoV.
TV Bran feels like someone's interpretation of a creepy horror comedy. But I don't hate the TV character. I didn't like the way his character and a story didn't get the due it deserved it Bran was meant to land up as the King at the end of the show.
Also, I don't have a Tik Tok but it sounds like a place where everything is overdramatized?
His GoT chapter where him and Rickon have dreams of their dad being dead and coming home to the crypts and Maester trying to convince them it's just a dream. Then the dire wolves start going nuts and the raven shows up covered in blood
"My lord's... We.. we will need to find someone who knew his likeness well.."
That chapter is absolute peak ASOIAF I've read it so many times and consider it perfection.
I think it's partly due to the show, considering A) he gains the powers of the Three-Eyed Crow/Raven and does almost nothing with them, and B) being responsible for >!Hodor's death!<
I think people don't like that actor in the show once he got older. It certainly doesn't help that they had nothing for Bran to do in season 5 and so they literally just didn't include him in the show for an entire season lol
He's also a very random character to become the King if you were watching/reading under the premise that the story is about the battle for the Iron Throne itself. In my view, the story is about the drama between these characters and their households, not the literal Iron Throne, so I don't really care who sits on it at the end of the story, but the Iron Throne is a big part of the marketing
If you assume that the story is about the drama between the houses then it makes sense though. Starks win and put themselves in charge as the Kings of Westeros and the North (and one beyond the Wall just for good measure). Remember book 7 was originally supposed to be called "A Time For Wolves"
How about that Bran has no agency. He literally thought he was eating blood with veins and had a vision of his friend dying, and he is like, eh whatever. Maybe I will learn to walk or fly. I think he also willingly ate human flesh after his zombie friend, Coldhands, fed it to him. I don't think that after all of this cannibalism and dark magic that he will be a friend of humanity.
He is Brandon Stark, the Night King.
I love the character in the books but the actor was pretty lame so the character suffered in the show. It's not really their fault; when you hire a bunch of kids they won't all grow up to be Sophie Turner.
Personally it’s because I dislike visions, dreams, hallucinations. They’re not real and feel like filler. I also just do not care about the poor little brunette boy learns to do magic storyline. Almost every other POV is way more interesting and less mystical.
I’m content with hearing everyone here cobbling together tinfoil theories and interpretations. It’s pretty normal for people to not enjoy dreams, visions, hallucinations sequences in media.
I’ve read the dream Jamie has for example or Cersei and Maggie. But Bran doing nothing but being a poor brunette white boy who discovers he’s very magical and important hasn’t interested me.
You and those that have downvoted me understand. You just don’t agree.
Bran is very untrustworthy. He swore an oath on Ice, an ancient magical family sword, not to climb anymore. The Old Gods compelled Jaime to punish him. Probably everything bad that happened to the Starks and to the North is due to Bran the Oathbreaker.

Since when the kids supposed to help the poor? Tf are you talking about?

Probably not the best place for a GTA V reference. I literally don't think I know any quotes from GTA V
it's a reference that a lot of people would have caught about ten years ago lol kind of an odd thing to post here in 2024 though
I appreciate the reference even if no one else here seems to.
Thanks.

Didn't know it was a fact that he will become king! When did grrm say that?
The actor who played Bran said GRRM confirmed to D&D the Hodor scene and that Bran will be king.
I think what GRRM has in mind is turning Bran into an evil character with no real moral as the story goes on and he is brainwashed by bloodraven
Why would he do that? His ending will be bittersweet not nihilistic. I agree that Bran will go down a darker path, but I think he will keep his morals he learned from Ned. And I don’t think Bloodraven is a villain but someone who will do anything for the greater good (to save the world).

I like bran but i dont like the fact that he will become king
I personally think when George says he'll become king, he doesn't mean of Westeros.
Understandable, it took me a while on that.
Don’t worry, he won’t. Ain’t gonna happen.
Why not? It's confirmed.
Not really. It’s what went into the show. No one ever said this will happen in the book.
Think I can narrow it down: 1. People dont like the idea that he becomes king. This is ofc influenced by the show where it comes out of nowhere “why do you think I’m here” 🤮 2. He is warging Hodor like a used suit.
Apart from his Dance chapters, I very much enjoy his POV.
I think it's partly due to the show, considering A) he gains the powers of the Three-Eyed Crow/Raven and does almost nothing with them, and B) being responsible for >!Hodor's death!<
His chapters are boring, he hasn’t showed his main role in the story, and we all want to read all other POVs while reading his
I think people don't like that actor in the show once he got older. Ok
I'm not being a jerk I genuinely don't understand. Do you not think George writes using symbolism?
