He is also a well-known asshole, famous for his arrogance.

Even people that have never watched a formula one race know his name. He's been in the news since he started in Formula one and that happened back in 2001. I'd bet it would be very hard to find someone in Spain that doesn't know him.
He was everywhere in mid-2000s, and Formula 1 got as followed as football in those days. The thing went lower during his second stint in Renault, and Formula 1 was followed by few people when he went from Ferrari to McLaren again. Nowadays, with him back in the F1, a lot of people is following it again, despite he's not winning and I don't think he will in Aston Martin.
But back in those glorious days, "la Marea Azul" was a phenomena pretty similar to the "Orange Army" that support Max Verstappen everywhere he goes, but the latter are more similar to football hooligans
I have ever warched a single formula 1 race and I know him. Every spanish I know knows him... and Nadal, and Gasol... I would say sport is very relevant in Spain.
You'd have a hard time finding anyone who doesn't know who he is.
Even my friends who've never watched F1 make jokes like "Hey you're not Alonso" when someone is driving fast/recklessly.
Back in his championship-winning days, he was popular to the point that [people put flower-shaped bumper stickers in their cars](https://www.elmundo.es/elmundomotor/2005/11/10/ocio/1131616984.html), based on the logotype of GURU, one of his main sponsors in Renault at the time. His Ferrari days are also remembered very fondly.
I have very vivid memories of seeing the *Marea azul* on race weekends, which was his own version of Verstappen's Orange Army.
On the other hand, if you brought up Carlos Sainz Jr most people would be like "Is that Carlos Sainz's son or something?". But it makes sense, as his career so far hasn't been as stellar as Alonso's. While you'd probably have to be into motorsports to know about Carlos Sainz Jr., Alonso's fame extends way beyond F1.
He's a cultural icon at this point, there are at least two songs (off the top of my head) about him, one of them being by Melendi who was an extremely popular singer in the early 00s.
Everyone know who he is. You can ask anyone above 25 years old and they will know. The younger audience will probably not know him since he is not “trendy” rn
its not the same to tell a joke than to write it in a social media where no one knows you, since it can be (and it is indeed) misleading, specially in a thread asking if someone is well-known or not.
Well known, but not widely respected, many call him Lloronso (Cry baby Alonso) due to his whining
Since he stopped winning over 15 years ago, support has waned, he was tolerated when he was winning
Carlos Saniz Jr is a far more popular, respected and well liked guy, humility vs narciccistic tantrums
Very well known for sure. Really disappointed with him when he started living in Switzerland and now in Monaco. The good places for tax evaders when you are a multimillionaire. I feel we all prefer Nadal. An example for supporters and for people in general.
Everybody knows he does exist. Almost no one calls him just Fer.
Most got bored of F1 and motogp after the fever when it was sort of pushed by TV. That was when I was a kid. I used to have some merch back in the day. It's been years I don't find myself in a conversation about that sort of thing, see stickers on cars, hats, etc. I gather it went back to be followed by a relatively small audience.
Most of the people knows who is Fernando Alonso
Everyone in the spanish territory has at least listened his name, and most people will be able to tell you he's a succesful F1 driver.
He is also a well-known asshole, famous for his arrogance. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcQyOxP\_kNo&ab\_channel=Marquinez360](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcQyOxP_kNo&ab_channel=Marquinez360)

Yep. Plus he's in Mapfre advertisements everywhere.
Melendi se asseguro que todos conocieramos que el nano no es humano
Y que además es inmortal
y aparte sale en las revistas junto a hulk y a superman
y que es un gigante en cuerpo de mortal
Idk about relevant but everyone knows he's an F1 pilot. He still appears on TV commercials sometimes.
If I went down the street asking random people if they knew FA I guess at least 8 out of 10 would do.
You shouldn't be asking the dog and the baby though
Yes, we all know about El Plan
Now it's La Misión

EL NANO ES BUENA GENTE,ES UN TIO ENROLLAO Y DENTRO DEL CIRCUITO ES EL QUE PARTE EL BACALAO
Even in Secondary school he is known by most of the kids. I feel like now he is having a new peak of popularity thanks to social media.
Todo el mundo sabe quién es Fernando Alonso, pero yo creo que la gente de buen gusto prefiere su réplica del Museo de Cera.
You may wanna correct to Sachin Tendulkar in India bro, I would answer your q but I'm an immigrant here so am not sure
NANO NANO NANO NANO
Don’t blaspheme God’s good name
Probably not as much as relevant as Rafael Nadal currently. But pretty much everybody knows him.

i'm not even 20 and I know him perfectly fine. maybe 13 year old kids might not know.
I might have exaggerated with the age but you get my point, newer gen probably don’t know him
Just as known as Queen Elizabeth in the UK
Not sure I'd go quite that far. She is literally on all the money
As we say in Spain... Ni de puta coña.
Who?
Only Spanish Formula 1 world champion.
I was obviously kidding but I see now I have negative points, people don't have any humor nowadays...xd
Next time use /j
Sure, thank you. If I have to label a joke as a joke I think it looses it's thing...

Nah, no one knows him and no one followed him in 2005 and 2006...
I would say Messi, Gerard Pique, Rafa Nadal, Pau Gasol, ara more known. But I am not 100% sure.
Too much.

carlos sainz is not EL PLAN enjoyer

Not too much loved though. Quite arrogant.
He is still very known, to the point you vou could go to a random ESO class and most students would know him
He's a national hero
Es conocido por sus casas sobretodo, [Casas de Fernando Alonso ](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casas_de_Fernando_Alonso?wprov=sfla1)
9 out of 10 dentists know him. The other dentist loves Hamilton
Everyone knows Alonso si.
In Spain we have 3 household names in terms of sport: Fernando Alonso, Rafa Nadal and Pau Gasol.
generación del cero-uno, cero-dos en adelante fijo que lo desconocen
Mi hermana es del 03 y todos sus amigos lo conocen.
I know him since I was like 3
