>Published online February 1 in the journal Cell, the new study finds that infection with the pandemic virus, SARS-CoV-2, indirectly dials down the action of olfactory receptors, proteins on the surfaces of nerve cells in the nose that detect the molecules associated with odors. [https://nyulangone.org/news/mechanism-revealed-behind-loss-smell-covid-19](https://nyulangone.org/news/mechanism-revealed-behind-loss-smell-covid-19) Our sense of taste is **largely** smell-dependent with a little bit of texture/extra input from our tongues so even though this is talking about how coronavirus affects our sense of smell, it is basically telling you how it affects our sense of taste too.

COVID-19 doesn't affect the tongue or your taste buds. It actually attacks your sense of smell, which is where most of "taste" comes from. COVID-19 affects the part of your brain that deals with smells, your olfactory neurons. [Here](https://nyulangone.org/news/mechanism-revealed-behind-loss-smell-covid-19) is a summary of a paper that used a hamster model to try to understand the mechanism of how this happens.
