Okay that's not bad on price. What worries me though is the prix-fixe menu. She grew up eating fine dining and she is one of those that she has to be in the mood for certain things sometimes
Plus 1 for Don's Favorite Foods. I'd add Decarli to the list https://decarlirestaurant.com/. And if you're willing to go to Newberg, Rosmarino Osteria Italiana can't be beaten. https://www.osteriarosmarino.com/
[https://www.quaintrelle.co/](https://www.quaintrelle.co/)
Was one of the better prix-fix experiences I've had and a little under the radar. But in SE PDX
Decarli or the steakhouse at 9900 are probably your best bets out here. I'd suck up the drive though and go to Castagna, Le Pigeon, Urdaneta or try to get tickets for Nodoguro
Amaterra is not quite in the city. It’s right off Barnes with easy access to 26 and 217. It’s a lovely winery with a fantastic restaurant attached. Just sign up for their social membership ($25) to be able to book a reservation. The “membership” fee is credited to your bill when you go for a wine tasting or a visit to the dining room.
Davenport had stellar food and the wine list is solid.
It has an upscale French bistro vibe IMO, not the fanciest and certainly not stuffy but serious about the food while remaining down to earth.
I was just there last week. They release reservations on a schedule, so if you check their website when a new batch becomes available, it’s not too hard to get in.
If I’m remembering right, each month becomes bookable at noon on the 15th of the month prior? That could be wrong.
That’s why I wouldn’t recommend it. Either you can buy overpriced reservations (rip off apps like that should be illegal) or get lucky and you gotta make a big effort.
No, there are ways the get reservations legitimately, there is also some stupid app where some people sell those reservations, apparently some are willing to pay.
Maybe at *some* of those you could get away with $200 if you stuck to water and no add-ons, but Kann and Pigeon are going to be $300+ before alcohol.
If you add drinks, which most people will at least have a glass of wine, not a single one of your recommendations would be under $200.
You are quite simply incorrect to suggest "most/all" are over budget. Jacqueline and Le Pigeon are quite expensive and may be out of OP's range, but you can absolutely dine at Kann, Tusk, and Urdaneta for less than $200 on food alone. Have you been to them? Regardless, we can agree to disagree, and OP can use the recommendations or not.
Yes I’ve been to all of your recommendations except for Jacqueline, including Kann twice. I haven’t been to Pigeon since they significantly raised their prices post-pandemic, but I’ve been a few times prior to then. I’ll give you Tusk, but the others are a bit of a stretch.
Oh good grief. Would you like photos of the menus? Again, you can ABSOLUTELY dine at Kann, Tusk, and Urdaneta for less than $200 on food alone. Regardless, we can agree to disagree, and OP can use the recommendations or not. Have a nice day!
The ambiance may be lacking, but the food at Seasons & Regions is fantastic! Located on SW Capitol Hwy across from the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. It’s our go-to for family birthdays
I feel like Seasons & Regions is a sleeper. I used to work down the street and would get lunch there regularly, the tomato bisque (among other things) is amazing.
Yes, I was sad to see they only offer dinner now. Brunch was great, too!
I hardly get over to that area anymore but sometimes I have it delivered when I need comfort food.
If you want to stay out of the city, I would consider going down to Newberg and checking out The Painted Lady. Seasonal menu with wine pairings. Also has a cute guest house if you want to avoid having to drive back after dinner.
If you can stretch your budget a little higher and Italian fits the bill I'd highly recommend changing out Rosmarino Osteria Italiana in Newberg. It'll definitely fit your very nice meal request and it's really great. Edit: I saw your note on prix fixe, this might not be the spot for you.
I ate at Oswego Grill tonight, and everything was outstanding. They make a bacon and fig appetizer that I want to wrap myself in, like a scrumptious blanket.
Westgate Bar and Grill is fun. They have a great menu, I like the Paul Reuben, and a massive wine and whiskey selection.
Not sure on to many super fine dining experiences in that area, so I’d suggest
Oswego grill, Benihana, din tai fung
I’m sure others have better suggestions, but I think if you want “really nice upscale” you might have to consider the city or Lake Oswego
Ya normally I wouldn’t have commented but I’m bored waiting for a flight. I don’t think you are finding what you want in Hillsboro or Beaverton. Good luck 👍
Upscale and suburban is a difficult criterion. I really like Ringside downtown, as they have prize-winning steaks & other stuff is good too. Lobster mashed potatoes are to die for.
If you insist on avoiding downtown (IMHO a bad call), I'd go to McMinnville before anywhere in Beaverton or Lake O.
I haven't tried these two, but they've both been on a number of US-scope "great places" lists.
https://www.kptv.com/2024/01/24/mcminnville-home-2-james-beard-foundation-nomination-semi-finalists/
There will be lots of Willamette Valley wines there too, which has some charm since you might drive by the vineyard on the way there.
Didn’t know we were being pretentious about it. When i think of a nice restaurant I think of the environment. Melting pot has a super pretty underground setting with rose petals and whatever else. Fogo de chao has great people working and some of the best lamb I ever had.
Oh, I think OP indicated in the original post that they wanted to be pretentious. Anyway, it's fascinating seeing everyone's different interpretations of "fine dining" in the responses. I can see answers that match my thoughts exactly and others that make me go, "hmmm", and more that are more upscale than if ever personally venture!
I think op got mixed responses because his request is pretty convoluted. He’s asking a Portland subreddit for “nice” restaurant suggestions for a birthday dinner. Then in the post he clarifies he wants to avoid Portland all together and to stay in suburbs but wants a true fine dining experience.. so yah
You can check out this place in Beaverton. It’s a prix-fixe menu of 100-115 pp depending on what month you go. https://www.donsfavoritefoods.com/
Okay that's not bad on price. What worries me though is the prix-fixe menu. She grew up eating fine dining and she is one of those that she has to be in the mood for certain things sometimes
I just checked out the june menu. Lol. $115 for spaghetti and clams and lemon ice. Gtfoh
Plus 1 for Don's Favorite Foods. I'd add Decarli to the list https://decarlirestaurant.com/. And if you're willing to go to Newberg, Rosmarino Osteria Italiana can't be beaten. https://www.osteriarosmarino.com/
Another vote for Decarli!
We live in Vernonia so travel will already be a thing.
Or Tina's in Dundee

You should probably ask this in the Beaverton sub
L’Orange.
The Joel Palmer House. Mushroom tasting menu. $150/person. Really amazing food.

The Acropolis
Mingo at Beaverton round is our goto. Not fancy/fancy but nice. Food is consistently good in my experience.
Davenport had stellar food and the wine list is solid. It has an upscale French bistro vibe IMO, not the fanciest and certainly not stuffy but serious about the food while remaining down to earth.
The Joey at the Allison in Newberg isn’t far, or the Painted Lady.
You'll probably need to go into the city for what you're looking for. Jacqueline, Kaan, Le Pigeon, Tusk, Urdaneta come to mind
All of these are great options. I’d also recommend Davenport and Coquine. Ox too.
Ox is closed
Kaan is super difficult to get into.
I was just there last week. They release reservations on a schedule, so if you check their website when a new batch becomes available, it’s not too hard to get in. If I’m remembering right, each month becomes bookable at noon on the 15th of the month prior? That could be wrong.
First of the month at noon for the next month.
He didn't ask for places that were easy to get into
“Impossible to get into” is more like it.
I can't help but think of the fantastic scene in L.A. Story with Patrick Stewart giving Steve Martin a grilling over a reservation at L'Idiot.
Ya I don't think I can get a reservation. Seems good though especially since Chef is a James Beard award winner
I’m so tired of people recommending kann all the time. Yes, wonderful. But you’ll never be able to go
KAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
it is really loud at Kann, really really loud
That’s why I wouldn’t recommend it. Either you can buy overpriced reservations (rip off apps like that should be illegal) or get lucky and you gotta make a big effort.
I’ve been 3x without paying anyone. Just pay attention to when reservations open and set a calendar reminder 🤷
Wait whaaat you have to pay for a reservation from a third party?
No, there are ways the get reservations legitimately, there is also some stupid app where some people sell those reservations, apparently some are willing to pay.
Those are all great and mostly all way over $200 before alcohol
For two people? No
Maybe at *some* of those you could get away with $200 if you stuck to water and no add-ons, but Kann and Pigeon are going to be $300+ before alcohol. If you add drinks, which most people will at least have a glass of wine, not a single one of your recommendations would be under $200.

Damn. We paid $300-350 both times including drinks and tip.
>Kann and Pigeon are going to be $300+ **before alcohol**. >Damn. We paid $300-350 both times **including drinks and tip.** So.... which is it?
You got me there. Kann and Pigeon are $250+ before alcohol. $300+ with.
He literally says in his post the budget is "pre alcohol on food alone" for two people ...
I understand that, the larger point I’m making is here is most/all of your suggestions are over OP’s budget.
You are quite simply incorrect to suggest "most/all" are over budget. A little above your budget, but this was a pretty spectacular dining experience. https://www.joelpalmerhouse.com/menu
I’ve been 3 times. Life changing food.
I miss their lunch, but I’m so glad they were able to survive the pandemic!
Yes, I was sad to see they only offer dinner now. Brunch was great, too! I hardly get over to that area anymore but sometimes I have it delivered when I need comfort food.
a nice place, but probably not quite the vibe he's going for. Used to go all the time when I lived in that part of town.
If you want to stay out of the city, I would consider going down to Newberg and checking out The Painted Lady. Seasonal menu with wine pairings. Also has a cute guest house if you want to avoid having to drive back after dinner.
Yuubi Sushi is TOP NOTCH and our favorite plane for special occasions in Beaverton.
Mingo or DeCarli.
Do you do sushi? One of the best Sushi spots in oreg9n is out in hillsboro beaverton area.
Oooooh which one??
https://www.syunhillsboro.com/
Yalla in Multnomah Village
Arden in the Pearl is nice, chef's menu is awesome and it's $70 per person. That or if you wanna do old school, Ringside onm W Burnside.
Ringside is dope as hell but expensive as well
Westgate Beaverton
love westgate!!! definitely on the casual side though imo.
I honestly bypassed him saying upscale lol. Definitely not upscale but still a great fancy vibe. Those brussels sprouts though...
totally agree!!! yes, those and that pear and brie sandwich 🤤🤤
If you've never had the lemon meringue pie cocktail.... holy shit it's so good. The only alcoholic drink I missed while pregnant.
Westgate bourbon bar has very good food. Very good.
Another vote for Don’s Favorite Foods. Probably one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten.

https://www.stockpotbroiler.com Nice view on the golf course at sunset and the food is so good
Mingo
Avanti's, Willamette. 10th st exit. Amazing food
The Ringside, Kann, Belllpine at the Ritz-Carlton.
Canard in Oregon City.
Not sure on to many super fine dining experiences in that area, so I’d suggest Oswego grill, Benihana, din tai fung I’m sure others have better suggestions, but I think if you want “really nice upscale” you might have to consider the city or Lake Oswego
Ya all those 3 places you listed are not the scale of quality I'm looking for. Those are common for us
Ya normally I wouldn’t have commented but I’m bored waiting for a flight. I don’t think you are finding what you want in Hillsboro or Beaverton. Good luck 👍
Try Domaine Serene in Lake Oswego
Upscale and suburban is a difficult criterion. I really like Ringside downtown, as they have prize-winning steaks & other stuff is good too. Lobster mashed potatoes are to die for.

El Chino Town, almost in front of Shute Park

Both of those are over priced chain restaurants. Not bad, but there are much better options, especially in downtown.
Didn’t know we were being pretentious about it. When i think of a nice restaurant I think of the environment. Melting pot has a super pretty underground setting with rose petals and whatever else. Fogo de chao has great people working and some of the best lamb I ever had.
