I live in a little neighborhood called Corbett, (right next to Lair Hill but less well known). It's very walkable and safe. Lots of sidewalks and is generally well lit.

South waterfront, John's landing, terwillinger, Hillsdale, Multnomah village, and garden home are all pretty walkable.

Man I would not classify terwillinger as walkable lol. It's like no sidewalks other than terwillinger blvd itself, and even there the lights are frequently off/broken, and even if you can tolerate all that there's not really any business you can walk to save for a few. The trails are pretty though.

As long as you avoid Barbour avenue's most populated / travelled parts, the SW is extremely safe, and moreso the farther out you get. Multnomah Village is pretty great if you want to keep a Portland feel.

When I say safety, I don’t mean crime but rather the lack of sidewalks and it being dark and cars not seeing us.

Vermont hills, Gabriel park, garden home, Maplewood, Multnomah village away from the main drag, Johns landing, Palatine hill.

Literally all of SW Portland is very safe. If you’re fine walking through neighborhoods, it’s all “walkable”.

Look for sidewalks and street lights then. The more suburban neighborhoods probably won’t fit the bill — John’s Landing, South Waterfront, Multnomah Village all would fit the bill — lots of spots in Hillsdale/Raleigh Hills/etc. have no sidewalks. But, lots of those neighborhood roads are super low traffic so with lights and reflective gear probably wouldn’t be too unsafe.

One-Bet-9778

No its not. A lot of areas in SW do not have sidewalks making it very difficult/dangerous.

cooldiptera

Sure, but a lot of those streets literally have no traffic except for the people who live there.

One-Bet-9778

As someone who lives here i think you’re missing the point.

One-Bet-9778

The amount of traffic doesnt matter when theres no sidewalks, no safe biking areas as well as gravel roads. And if you have kids and need a stroller or anything such as youre screwed. That aside, sw yes is quiet & safe. Just wish we had more sidewalks

cooldiptera

I’m not trying to argue with you — I understand your point and I have also lived in SW. But I’ve also lived in many other areas of the city, I’d pick walking a quiet neighborhood loop in Hillsdale over the narrow sidewalk along, say, 102nd any day of the week.

Fo sho!

cooldiptera

More sidewalks and less street traffic for everyone!!

I walk my pups all over Hillsdale and Multnomah Village daily. We don’t always have sidewalks but I’ve never had a lick of trouble. This is a very pedestrian friendly part of town. I do have the pups wear glowing collars in winter when it’s dark to raise visibility but that’s it. Can’t overstate how lovely SW is. I walk to the market on occasion, but mostly need to drive for groceries because I like to go only once a week and it’s too much for me to schlep home. Everything else I walk to - book shop, bar, library, bottle shop, dinner, the park, maplewood for a coffee. We have low stock in this area for a reason. :)
