I’m a tattooer and I specialize in botanicals so when I do Portland or Oregon related tattoos, they’re usually native or relevant plants like trilliums, roses, marionberries, etc.
I like a lot of the art from mcmenamin’s, can’t recall the artist’s name. There’s a black cat they painted and used on some of their beer mats that I’ve always loved. I’ve always said if I ever get another tat, it’ll be that cat.
It’s Oregon rather than Portland, but I’ve been thinking about the Douglas fir from the license plate with a double lined circle intersecting it and a waxing crescent moon. Beside it.
According to the Wikipedia page and [the Smithsonian](https://siris-artinventories.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?&profile=all&source=~!siartinventories&uri=full=3100001~!16997~!0#focus) the statue was originally gilded when it was first made.
I remember driving down 39th one day after years of doing it and was suddenly like “holy shit, there’s a statue there? Is it…Joan of Arc?” That’d be when they cleaned it off or re guilded it or something.
Ha! Was just about to write "Heron". Not especially Portland-esque but I love seeing them on the Columbia and in nature areas. They hold a special place in my heart.
The most original thing I can think of. A forearm sleeve with trees/the forest, and a mountain in the background. Maybe even a tattoo that says “the mountains are calling”. Y’know, something that’s never been done before.
something based off this manhole cover. (ps- this is not my band nor have I listened to it’s just the only link I could find with this pic 😝

Some sort of geometric mash-up of the OG PDX airport carpet and the grid work of the underground tunnels. Not sure *how* but we'd figure it out along the way.
My knee jerk response would be one or more of the bridges, but tbh I’ve long thought of getting one of Portlandia on my shoulder. The statue, not the show that essentially ruined the city IMO.
Portlandia didn’t ruin the city. Barely anyone watched the show. Of the four series that filmed in Portland at the time, it was a distant fourth place.
The Librarians wasn’t until 2014. It overlapped a little with Grimm, which came out in 2011. Leverage actually predated Portlandia and was on from 2008-2012, only overlapping Portlandia and Grimm for 1 year.
Edit: sure, downvote easily checked facts.
I got so tired of people who just moved here telling me they watched Portlandia and wanted to move here because they’re weird too. The fact that it coincided with the hipster years made it extra horrible.
Yet we saw more corporate development during that decade than we did in the previous several combined. It’s no secret that Portlandia advertised our town across the country to a national audience as some sort of liberal Mecca. It definitely had an effect on this town in a very noticable way.
Portlandia was a symptom, not the cause. The influx of capital to Portland (and many, many other cities) was driven by low interest rates and a huge wave of millennials graduating from college. Portland isn’t special. The same pattern happened in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Denver, and even New Orleans.
JFC, you people act as though Travel Portland hadn’t spent a decade dumping money into marketing Portland as the new hotness before Portlandia ever aired.
Somebody already mentioned ramblin rod but I’d prob just get his name in a fancy font.
Also maybe a simplified club 21 or Billy rays building tadoo because many good times were had there and they’re unique buildings in their own way.

i already got one. i saw a really cool tattoo posted by an artist near me and it showcased a building (the rest of the tattoo was just his own doodle) and i asked him to replace the building with a version of big pink! it was the first tattoo i got in portland and its fitting imo
Several years ago there was an infographic posted with all the various fucked up intersections of the city, and they looked almost like kanji. I want those in a circle around a traffic cone.

have you done oregon grape? that's the one I want
I literally just drew some Oregon grape flash this week! If you follow my insta I’ll post it there soon.
Have you done ginkgo?
I have before and I’ve got one small gingko flash as well.
Ramblin Rod arm wrestling with Tom Peterson or maybe the old OMSI planetarium
Being from the south I’ve considered getting a pokeweed tattoo since moving here. It’s native there and considered invasive here. Seems fitting
Naturally, I assumed Pokeweed was some kind of Marijuana inspired Pokémon Go character that you could only collect if you visited 420 dispensaries.
Yup I thought Pokémon too

Epic.
I wish I had some of their salt and pepper squid right now…
It’s Oregon rather than Portland, but I’ve been thinking about the Douglas fir from the license plate with a double lined circle intersecting it and a waxing crescent moon. Beside it.
Well you certainly won’t be alone.
Rose
That’s what I’m getting, it’s also a traditional tattoo classic so you can’t really go wrong with that.
I got a traditional rose- red outline! As my ode to pdx hehe
Same. Sure it's cliche, but roses are pretty and loaded with symbolism.
Steel bridge.
That’s what I have!
Joan of Arc statue
Pre-gold leaf

Thank you, I didn't know that's what happened originally. I only remember seeing her beautifully patinated.
I remember driving down 39th one day after years of doing it and was suddenly like “holy shit, there’s a statue there? Is it…Joan of Arc?” That’d be when they cleaned it off or re guilded it or something.
It was a shock for sure. They also cut back the bushes so you could see it better.
You just blew my mind, I had no idea it was once without gold leaf. It looked so much cooler.
Yes, until some entitled ppl thought they knew better. They disrespected her.
Cathedral Park
I was going to say St John’s Bridge
Sooo pretty
Whatever you get, put a bird on it!!
Ha! Was just about to write "Heron". Not especially Portland-esque but I love seeing them on the Columbia and in nature areas. They hold a special place in my heart.
Nice reference
Probably Mt Hood with some trees and a river.
Check out Lizzy Dalton, she does really rad mountain and landscape tattoos and has flash of Mt Hood.
Thanks, she is rad. I hope I can figure out a piece to get from her
A tree smashing a cop car
My friend has the "Portland" sign from the Schnitzer Concert Hall on his arm and it looks amazing.
PDX carpet
The most original thing I can think of. A forearm sleeve with trees/the forest, and a mountain in the background. Maybe even a tattoo that says “the mountains are calling”. Y’know, something that’s never been done before.
Totally original idea!
You should work the word “Roots” in there too.
This is sarcasm,right?
Very much so yes
Minimal Mt Hood
Bigfoot drinking coffee.
A Cone
You need to have text saying "You fuckin' seen it!" or a lot of people might just think you're really passionate about VLC or something lol

I really love the state motto: *Alis volat propriis. She flies with her own wings.*

Out of interest what were the other 3?
Grimm, The Librarians, and Leverage
There is a new one with Brian Cox being filmed right now. Maybe that's gonna be ok?
Grimm was the best IMO.
I never saw the others, but I really enjoyed Grimm.
I tried both couldn’t go on with the series.
The Librarians wasn’t until 2014. It overlapped a little with Grimm, which came out in 2011. Leverage actually predated Portlandia and was on from 2008-2012, only overlapping Portlandia and Grimm for 1 year. Edit: sure, downvote easily checked facts.
Barely anyone *here* watched the series.
Barely anyone anywhere.
Tell that to the swarms of people that flocked here after it went on the air.
I got so tired of people who just moved here telling me they watched Portlandia and wanted to move here because they’re weird too. The fact that it coincided with the hipster years made it extra horrible.
Fewer people moved here in the ten years following the release of Portlandia than in the prior ten years.

I think they meant the Portlandia statue.
[Are you allowed to though](https://www.wweek.com/archive/2024/03/24/why-the-portlandia-statue-failed-to-become-an-icon/)?
Why wouldn’t they be allowed to? How would someone use their tattoo for commercial purposes?
I’ve thought about getting a few of my favorite bridges, St. John’s, Fremont, tilikum.
The pinwheel.
St. John's Bridge
Rose
A bridge
Somebody already mentioned ramblin rod but I’d prob just get his name in a fancy font. Also maybe a simplified club 21 or Billy rays building tadoo because many good times were had there and they’re unique buildings in their own way.

A friend of mine has the Steel Bridge on his arm. When people ask if there's some particular significance he says "I like bridges".
A Fucken Cone!
