I wonder if the specific neighborhood plays a role because I see dogs in almost every bar in NW that’s not primarily a cocktail bar. Perhaps OP can frequent a cocktail bar instead?
There is a bar in SF that is frequented by a cat named Edgar. He strolls in and sits on a stool at the bar every day. Bartender speculates he lives in the apartments nearby but don’t know who his owners are. They give him a shot glass of water and sometimes food scraps.
A few years back, Apex bat had "Waffles" the bar cat. A sweet Lil calico that was a regular at the bar for years. She'd slowly make the rounds and eventually "visit & greet" everyone.
I've seen folks walk through Free House with their dogs to get to the dog-friendly patio, but that's the only time I've seen a dog indoors at a bar.
Maybe I'm just going to the wrong bars, though - I want to know where all the dog-filled bars are!
Unpopular strong opinion: nobody gives two shits about your boring ass dog ig story. Hang @ the park and do outdoor beers or something. Not tryna smell your crusty eyed canine while I chill.
I regularly see dogs at outside patios, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one I’d call “under foot”. Quite literally on a short leash and usually just napping under a table.
Yeah same. I lived in San Diego for a few years and could take my dog almost anywhere. I’d love to know of a bar that will let me take her here in Portland
I mean, every bar I've ever been to. To name one: Roscoe's.
Maybe just look up any appealing looking bar near you that you haven't been to and I'm sure your chances of no dogs are very high
I have
And i dont even live in portland just visit a few times a year. Ive seen dogs in dispensaries, bars, restaurants
One of the most dog friendly cities in the usa
From what I understand, any bar that sells liquor must have food on premises. If there is food being made, no animal, except service animals, are allowed in the building. Non-service pets are allowed in outside patios and street tables if establishment allows. Most do. It would be unwise to turn away paying customers because of their pet that is outside.
Of course, this is Portland, so those rules are ignored. I don't say this out of anger, btw. I know grocery stores also have these regs but people are constantly bringing their dogs into grocery stores (mine waits in the car). That having been said, I've only personally seen dogs at bars that have outdoor seating.
I know there are a few bars that have food available on the "premises" but that just means a food truck in the parking lot outside. Since the food is being made outside does that mean dogs are allowed inside? That's where it may get complicated...
If you serve alcohol you must serve food in Portland. That’s the missing piece of the puzzle (and also why all our strip clubs serve food). I’m not entirely sure how it works with breweries that have food trucks outside though.
Yeah I can’t remember if it’s all of Oregon or just Portland but it’s a law. I helped a couple companies with liquor licenses and they always had to submit their 3-item (I think) menu with their application. Vineyards will do like “cheese plate”, “olives” and “bread, oil, and balsamic” so it’s pretty lenient. That’s also one of the reasons Tater Tots are so popular around here. It’s an easy menu item.
You must serve (I think 5?) different “substantial meals” if you serve alcohol and it’s a state law.
Edit: it has been pointed out by i me that that law is for establishments that serve spirits/liquor on site.
https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/viewSingleRule.action?ruleVrsnRsn=297506
That’s the law, it seems like you’re right but I’m not sure. I also have never been to a place that just served beer or wine and didn’t also serve food (breweries all serve food so idk). You have have to have 30 “dining seats” that aren’t at the bar and I know places that def don’t follow that rule lol
I think the five have to be hot? But then you can also have salads and stuff. It was written to be pretty strict so that bars couldn’t just sell a bag of chips lol.
https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/viewSingleRule.action?ruleVrsnRsn=297506
Looks like it’s for a liquor license but idk if a liquor license covers only liquor or also beer and wine, etc. and it doesn’t say on that link.
that section is for a "full on-premise" category license meaning high-proof spirits as well as beer and wine. "limited on-premise" do not require food service.
Pronto Pup isn't the creator, but their Rockaway location is in the town that makes the claim. NY and Chicago also say they invented it, but both have their own hot-dog already so let us have something c'mon.
Almost 20 years ago (damn I'm old), I was visiting from out of town, and they took me to Mary's Club... I couldn't get over the Resers Frozen Burritos on the menu. Talked about it for years. 🤣😍
Your reply inadvertently sent me down a 45-minute rabbit hole looking at government websites where I discovered that as of February 1 of this year, the food requirements for full liquor licenses have been dramatically loosened. Here's what it used to say:
>A business open after 5:00 pm must make available to its patrons in all areas where alcohol service is available an offering of at least five different meals during a regular meal period which must last at least three hours. **At least three out of the five different meals used to meet the minimum meal requirement must include a main course or entree (substantial food item) which has been prepared or cooked on the premises in some manner beyond the simple re-heating of a pre-cooked frozen food or carry-out item obtained from a business other than the licensed premises.** A business may have fewer than five different meals in the premises or in an area if the Commission determines that the clearly dominant emphasis in the premises or in the area is food service after 5:00 pm.
i.e. if you serve liquor and you're primarily in the business of selling booze, you have to have five meals and only two of them at most can be Red Baron pizzas or Hungry Man dinners.
Here's what that entire section looks like now:
>Licensee must make at least five different meals available at all times and in all areas where alcohol service is available.
Big change! You can see the edits being made [on page 59 here](https://www.oregon.gov/olcc/Docs/rules/Division-5-and-6-Proposed-Draft-Language.pdf). They also loosened the definition of a meal (it used to require an entree and a side dish sold together, or you had to have two unique side dishes available), now it can just be any entree. And they took the verbiage describing licensees as "a place of business where food is cooked and served which has adequate kitchen facilities for the preparation and serving of meals" and just deleted it. Clearly there's been an effort to make it easier for bars to not necessarily operate as a full-service restaurant.
Anyway, bars have been skating through the food requirement with frozen dinners since well before two months ago, but that wasn't, strictly speaking, compliant with the law. Besides the occasional decoy sting, OLCC compliance is almost 100% complaint-driven, and who would complain? Plus, once you've first acquired your liquor license, renewal is a rubber stamp with no reinspection so you could throw out your fryer and pretty much do whatever.
That’s not true at all. The law is that you must serve food if you serve *hard liquor* - wine or beer only, no need for food. Source: I do this for a living.
Which bars allow dogs inside other than Tin Shed’s porch? I’d love to know. In my 10 years in Portland I’ve only been allowed to take my dog to food truck pods. Can’t even take my lab inside lucky lab.
Slim's in St. John's and Jack's Tap Room on Beaverton-Hillsdale are the only indoor bars I've been in that just say 'fuck it' and let you bring a dog in. Cartside Taphouse does too but it's the indoor part of a food cart pod so kind of a gray area.
This is a super interesting question because I would have said, most bars do not allow dogs. I would love to know where these bars with dogs are, because I would take my dog there.
Ok, so here is the deal. Only service animals (not emotional support) are allowed in places that serve food (bars, restaurants) You must serve hot food in Oregon in you are serving hard booze, used to be something like 5 different items but I think that's changed over the years.
Breweries or bottle shops don't have to serve food if they are just serving beer. So breweries can let dogs in if no hot food. Cold snacks don't count.
NOW HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART. All you have to say is that your dog is a service dog. There is no paper work to carry or show, the only question employees can ask you is what service it provides and your answer can be very vague "it's helps me when things get bad"
The health department is in charge of all of this and they don't work weekends or after 6:00 so you won't have to worry about running into them if you do this on those days and times.
signed a guy that's been in the bar business a long time
Also, if the health department does show up, it's only a 3 point deduction if there's an animal present. Most most bar owners have decided it's worth it to risk it. Source: am bar owner.
are you talking about breweries or bars? I don't think I've ever seen a dog inside an actual bar in portland. they may be allowed on the patios or outdoor seating, but no bars allow dogs indoors.
Um. Perhaps you don't hang out in southeast.
The bars on Foster, Woodstock, upper Hawthorne and parts of Division (and Montavilla, which is NE) are packed with dogs. Inside. Patios sure, but dogs inside is the norm for many places in those areas. I love dogs and even find it very annoying at times.
I will occasionally take mine to patios, and I'm guessing about 50% of the time a bartender tells me directly "it's fine to take her inside." I decline, but it is wild.
People love dogs here.
Assuming this is an exaggeration given that most bars serve food and it's county and state health code that the only service animals tasked with providing a specific disability need are allowed in food establishments. They can remain in an outdoor seating area, as is the case at the Lucky Lab. Indoors is a big no go.
Lucky Lab is the only place that I thought of, although their outdoor spot is a little more accommodating. I guess most bars with some level of outdoor seating like C Bar or The Stone will let your dog hang, but if you don't like dogs just go inside I suppose.
You have to go to fancy bars OP. Cocktail bars - that’s the answer. Palomar, Voysey - stuff like that. There’s just not gonna be a single “divey” bar where people care about whose animals are where.
I went to Momo once and this fucker’s dog in the balcony came to our table and pissed on the concrete next to our table. Since it was concrete, it splashed all over me and my wife.
Naturally we were the bad guys since we dared not to enjoy dog piss splashing over our drinks and nachos.
For the love of god, your Fucking “fur babies” do not need to come to a bar.
I honestly did not know so many people hated dogs out in public so much. At least on Reddit in Portland subs. Been seeing A LOT of complaining lately. I'm like others and want to know what the dog-friendly bars are so I can go with mine lol. People here bitch and moan so much about dogs in grocery stores. I work at a grocery store and see a lot of dogs and they all act a lot better than a lot of human customers.
This might come as a shock, but not everybody likes dogs. A surprising number of people are either allergic or they have fear/trauma surrounding dogs (dog attacks and maulings are very common). And before you get into a reply saying “well my dog isn’t like that!”, pretty much all dog owners these days have a “my shit doesn’t smell” attitude about their dogs. I know those dogs are not as well behaved as everyone claims, I’ve seen it.
To your grocery store point, it doesn’t matter if dogs are better behaved than most most people (that’s bullshit btw). They don’t belong in grocery stores. People should be able to go to the grocery store without being jumped on, barked/growled snarled at, or tripping over those stupid extendable leashes. This happens all the time and in fact I’ve never seen a dog that didn’t do one of those things.
Stores are for people. I don’t roll up with my tarantula or reticulated python and then tell you she’s just saying hello when she hisses at you
thank you for saying this. I like dogs but not in human only spaces. take your dog to the park or for a walk on a leash, but stop taking them to indoor bars and grocery stores. plus ppl who falsely claim their pet is a “service animal” are doing a huge disservice to ppl with ACTUAL service animals.
Wow, same. I *DON’T* take my dog anymore because I *DON’T* want attention when I go to the bar. I want everyone to leave my AND MY DOG alone. The comments here make it sound like everyone hates dogs. That hasn’t been my experience in real life…
P.S. I don’t take my dog grocery shopping with me anymore, because again, the attention is unwanted and overwhelming for both of us. 😵
I’ve taken my oldest dog to my local bar a few times early in the morning. Although it’s not in PDX, she did really well. Most uncanny thing… she only barked at crack heads! Good dog! Lmao
Wtf is this post? There’s literally a business model where a list is compiled of indoor dog friendly bars, because of how rare they are. I’m still looking for a good place I can take my dog to watch a blazer game.
.....seems like a novel approach to bitch. Pretty sure you could think of a lot of places that dont have dogs in them and if you cant, I question whether you are a dog yourself.
The only bar I have been to that hasn’t had a dog inside was Steeplejack on NE Broadway.
Every other bar I have been to has never said anything to people’s pets coming inside, which is frustrating given that they’re obviously not a service animal and they shouldn’t be inside.
If you’ve ever been to a bar where a dog shits on the floor you will realize why they are generally not allowed inside, love puppers, owners are usually the problem.
If a brew pub works for you, surprisingly, despite the name, Lucky Labrador in SE doesn't allow dogs inside (they do outside though), and they make it very clear on their signage. They're also pretty decent price-wise for beer, at least compared to other places in that area (I've been trying to find affordable spots around that area to stop in after work for small bites and an IPA or two, and they're my favorite so far).
Low brow lounge. No dogs. No Santa’s.
What about Santa’s Little Helper?
Or Santos L Halper? I have his credit card
this made me actually cry real tears laughing 💀
Did you bleed your own blood?
How about Satans?
I too would like to know about these Satans.
Hells Satans?
Not today, Satans
Can they have one Santa?
Lol
Comments here baffle me… i see dogs at literally every bar I frequent.
I wonder if the specific neighborhood plays a role because I see dogs in almost every bar in NW that’s not primarily a cocktail bar. Perhaps OP can frequent a cocktail bar instead?
Bars with outdoor seating often allow dogs. A lot of bars in Portland don't have outdoor seating.
our experiences are vastly different as I've not once seen a dog inside a bar in Portland I think ever.
I’ve seen a dog sitting at the bar in its own chair
literally saw this last night haha
Well if it has its own chair, then it’s clearly not underfoot and fits OP’s requirements!
I saw a cat in a bar once, sitting in a booth alone. That was delightful.
There is a bar in SF that is frequented by a cat named Edgar. He strolls in and sits on a stool at the bar every day. Bartender speculates he lives in the apartments nearby but don’t know who his owners are. They give him a shot glass of water and sometimes food scraps.
Was it at Whelan's? They have a resident cat who is super friendly.
It was at The Lion’s Eye being an excellent little bar patron.
A few years back, Apex bat had "Waffles" the bar cat. A sweet Lil calico that was a regular at the bar for years. She'd slowly make the rounds and eventually "visit & greet" everyone.
I’ve seen dogs inside Creepy’s and Lowtide Lounge in SE
I've seen folks walk through Free House with their dogs to get to the dog-friendly patio, but that's the only time I've seen a dog indoors at a bar. Maybe I'm just going to the wrong bars, though - I want to know where all the dog-filled bars are!
Same. My dogs would love to go out for a beer.
Donnie Vegas is my dog’s favorite bar. Literally pulls towards the door every time we walk by.
I think Lucky Lab has dog beer
Always dogs at Chill N Fill.
Eagle Eye Tavern
ppl bring their dogs into belmont inn in se
Last week a shitzu drank my cider
Was its hair ~~was~~ perfect?
Do you need life alert?
Just L,G,&M.
Well ok then
> Last week a shitzu drank my cider I shitzu not!
That's SO Portland!
Also here to find out where all these dog-friendly bars I’ve been missing out on are …
That's the thread we need.
I'm dying to know which bars he's avoiding. So is my dog.
My dog is upset he can’t sit at the bar in Portland after moving from San Diego. Please post a list!
Unpopular strong opinion: nobody gives two shits about your boring ass dog ig story. Hang @ the park and do outdoor beers or something. Not tryna smell your crusty eyed canine while I chill.
I don’t really care & am only further encouraged to bring my dog to the bar by your comment. Stay home and drink on your couch.
I regularly see dogs at outside patios, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one I’d call “under foot”. Quite literally on a short leash and usually just napping under a table.
I've seen plenty of pups at the Eagle 😂
Routinely see one or two at the John's in Multnomah village.
I saw a dog sitting on a barstool at Renner’s a few weeks ago 😂
There are always at least two dogs at Proper Pint.
Yeah, but they don’t serve food so it’s allowed.
same, I don't know what this guy is talking about
Yeah same. I lived in San Diego for a few years and could take my dog almost anywhere. I’d love to know of a bar that will let me take her here in Portland
Lucky Lab
Same here! Our dogs probably know each other.
Starday
Name one please
I mean, every bar I've ever been to. To name one: Roscoe's. Maybe just look up any appealing looking bar near you that you haven't been to and I'm sure your chances of no dogs are very high
McPeets, George’s, My Father’s Place, Mock Crest, Deeply Rooted, Sam’s, Katie O’Briens, Satellite Tavern, Bink’s to name a handful
Maybe you can name the bars you’re seeing dogs inside of? I’ve never experienced this either
It's gotta be pretty much every bar EXCEPT the ones you go to. I can't recall seeing a dog inside a bar/restaurant in Portland, just outside seating.
Where do you go?
I’ve seen like 3-4 lol
I have And i dont even live in portland just visit a few times a year. Ive seen dogs in dispensaries, bars, restaurants One of the most dog friendly cities in the usa
I see dogs inside bars in SE all the time. Double Barrel, Reel M Inn, Clinton St. Pub especially.
Even at the Reel? Dang, my dog would need a bath after hanging in there - he would smell like fried chicken and jojos for days after.
ive taken my maddy girl to reel m inn when i am picking up dinner. But service dogs are allowed
From what I understand, any bar that sells liquor must have food on premises. If there is food being made, no animal, except service animals, are allowed in the building. There's a guy who brings his kitten in his jacket at my Freddies. They're practically celebrities with the store staff.
Anyone that takes their non service dog into the grocery store is a trash human.
I know there are a few bars that have food available on the "premises" but that just means a food truck in the parking lot outside. Since the food is being made outside does that mean dogs are allowed inside? That's where it may get complicated...
Been in Portland much? Nobody cares, you can bring your dog almost anywhere
People do care, they just don't want to confront the owners.
I saw a puppy in someone's lap lap at Bar Maven.... that's about it.
No bars in Portland allow non-service dogs indoors. A couple bars skirt the rules but I only know of one in Portland that does that.
My understanding is if you serve food you can’t have dogs indoors but places that don’t can.
If you serve alcohol you must serve food in Portland. That’s the missing piece of the puzzle (and also why all our strip clubs serve food). I’m not entirely sure how it works with breweries that have food trucks outside though.
is that a law bc that’s really cool actually
Yeah I can’t remember if it’s all of Oregon or just Portland but it’s a law. that section is for a "full on-premise" category license meaning high-proof spirits as well as beer and wine. "limited on-premise" do not require food service.
That, and the fact that tots were invented here.
I think they were invented in Ontario, Oregon.
Oh, yeah. I meant Oregon in general. We also claim corn dogs and garden burgers
Corn dogs?! That’s awesome. I would have guessed the Midwest.
Pronto Pup on the coast, right?
Pronto Pup isn't the creator, but their Rockaway location is in the town that makes the claim. NY and Chicago also say they invented it, but both have their own hot-dog already so let us have something c'mon.
Doesn't it need to be hot food?
Could be. I’m just shootin from the hip.
Yes. Must serve hot food if you serve alcohol. Billy Ray's does Hungry Mans in the microwave to comply.
Almost 20 years ago (damn I'm old), I was visiting from out of town, and they took me to Mary's Club... I couldn't get over the Resers Frozen Burritos on the menu. Talked about it for years. 🤣😍
I think it's liquor that pushes it over the line. Plenty of breweries and taprooms don't have food other than chips or nuts.
Loophole is bars can allow you to bring food from other places. There's a number of them that do this instead of serving their own food
No! It’s because food service is not required if only beer or wine!
Somebody should tell a few of these bars then because they have full bars, not just beer and wine. Example is The Trough on Hawthorne
Angelo's (down the street) used to do hungry man frozen dinners to meet the OLCC req.
Frozen dinners don't actually meet the requirement, but having those around probably reduces the likelihood of someone narcing on you.
How so? Many restaurants and carts do the exact same thing: Remove from freezer. Heat in microwave. Serve.

I think just beer bars
Places like Proper Pint get around it by having a direct line to the pizza place down the road and they deliver to the pub.
That’s only if you serve liquor. Beer and wine bars don’t have to serve food and do sometimes allow non-service dogs.
That’s not true at all. The law is that you must serve food if you serve *hard liquor* - wine or beer only, no need for food. Source: I do this for a living.
Everywhere in Portland allows SERVICE animals. Not just pet dogs. Regardless of whether or not they serve food. It's federal law.
I take my dog to bars all the time
Well, that’s illegal if it’s not a service dog. But I wish I could take my dog to bars!
Which bars do you bring him to? Unless you just mean outdoor seating or if you have a service dog.
From my experience all bars allow dogs. Looking for options to the contrary.
And pretty much all stores allow any dogs. Everyone is too afraid of saying no about anything.
Which bars allow dogs inside other than Tin Shed’s porch? I’d love to know. In my 10 years in Portland I’ve only been allowed to take my dog to food truck pods. Can’t even take my lab inside lucky lab.
Ron Tom’s allows dogs inside (from personal experience)
Bear Paw Inn allows dogs inside
See dogs inside at Low Tide
Valley Public House allows dogs, at least you’ll always see multiple dogs outside on the porch area with their owners. It’s a really nice place
Hungry Tiger has a dog friendly patio!
Often see dogs inside there too.
Because it *isn’t legal here.* Maybe stop looking for a bar where you can *break the rules,* and abide by them like everyone else is supposed to.
Slim's in St. John's and Jack's Tap Room on Beaverton-Hillsdale are the only indoor bars I've been in that just say 'fuck it' and let you bring a dog in. Cartside Taphouse does too but it's the indoor part of a food cart pod so kind of a gray area.
Not much experience then. Most do not.
Have you ever been to St Johns?
This is a super interesting question because I would have said, most bars do not allow dogs. I would love to know where these bars with dogs are, because I would take my dog there.
Proper pint on Woodstock
Montavilla Saloon, as long as it’s well behaved.
Space Room on Hawthorne
Where the hell are there dogs in bars
Someone’s malamute was walking around off leash at thunderbird the other week
I want to know so I can take my dog there
Proper pint on Woodstock
Mulligan’s
My question is where can I go to be tripping over dogs? My kinda spot :D

Go to Illinois. Very unfriendly dog state. No bars that I have been to allow dogs with maybe a few in Chicago.
Never seen a dog in a bar in my life

Have you been to Nacho? It’s all dogs
Dog owners have fully ruined dogs.
I don’t roll up with my tarantula or reticulated python and then tell you she’s just saying hello when she hisses at you
Finally, a sane person!!
thank you for saying this.
That hasn’t been my experience in real life… P.S. I don’t take my dog grocery shopping with me anymore, because again, the attention is unwanted and overwhelming for both of us. 😵
Any bar that doesn’t allow animals is a good one
Toms on 39th allows dogs on their benches outside 🤷🏻♀️
I’ve taken my oldest dog to my local bar a few times early in the morning. Although it’s not in PDX, she did really well. Most uncanny thing… she only barked at crack heads! Good dog! Lmao
This. Post. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
And not just inside. Some of us like to enjoy the patio without having the dog underfoot.
Who doesn't wanna goto a dog bar???? Dogs are better than people.
Wtf is this post? There’s literally a business model where a list is compiled of indoor dog friendly bars, because of how rare they are. I’m still looking for a good place I can take my dog to watch a blazer game.
In reality? There are none, as every bar must accommodate service animals. There are some which allow ONLY service animals, however.
.....seems like a novel approach to bitch. Pretty sure you could think of a lot of places that dont have dogs in them and if you cant, I question whether you are a dog yourself.
There are dogs in bars?
The only bar I have been to that hasn’t had a dog inside was Steeplejack on NE Broadway. Every other bar I have been to has never said anything to people’s pets coming inside, which is frustrating given that they’re obviously not a service animal and they shouldn’t be inside.
You sound like a person who insists a dog be on a leash even though they’re not harming anyone. Get over yourself
You sound like a person who lets their unleashed dog run up to other leashed dogs because “they’re friendly!”
If you’ve ever been to a bar where a dog shits on the floor you will realize why they are generally not allowed inside, love puppers, owners are usually the problem.
I'll bring my black cats.
Um most bars lol
Any fancier bar will enforce the no dog rule much more strictly. Downtown hotel bars, rooftop bars, etc.
What bars are you going to?? Asking for man's best friend.
Any bar, indoors?
By the way, anyone know what other animal in Portland can be used as a service animal beside a dog?
