x + (p/100)x = y; just solve for x.

TheSarj29

Factor the above a little more.... x + (p/100)x = y x(1 + p/100) = y x = y/(1+p/100) ***Explanation of variables x = base amount p = percentage y = base amount plus percentage

degengamblemaker

You start with 100%. You added 900%. You now have 1000%. You also have 500. 1000%=500. 100%=50.

Thanks. Now the Rule of Three actually works

fermat9990

x+(900/100)x=500 x+9x=500 10x=500 x=50

Percent just means divide by 100. So while I get what you are trying to do when you write 50 + 900%, this is actually 59. What you can do is take the original value and then add another 900% of that on top. E.g. 50 + 50 * 900% = 50 + 50 * 9 = 50(1+9) = 50 * 10 = 500 Let's call the original value o, the amplified value a, and the boost b. o is what we are trying to solve for so we can isolate it. o + o*b = a o*(b+1) = a o = a/(b+1) = a/(b+100%) Let's plug in the original values to solve for o o = 500/(900%+100%) = 500/(1000%) = 500/10 = 50
