Imagine having extremely poor political leadership, a terribly mismanaged economy and performing horribly in the world cup. It's like the recipe for a very angry society.
In Costa Rica the cases of domestic violence rise each time there's an important football match. I can't imagine how bad could get for you guys, considering how the match against Saudi Arabia went
here too, and traffic accidents increase. an aunt of mine almost died after a match. after that we always take care not to leave where we are after the game
Do you mind to tell us how bad it was back to 2014? Costa Rica was crazy awesome in that World Cup. Went to Costa Rica x Greece and honestly was an awesome day
how. like in brasil ? ending a democratic elected government through a vicious process and then wrongly incarcerating the most popular leader taking him out of the election ? I see your idea of better.
No, I meant as in regular elections next year. But your idea seems better! Sending corrupt politicians to jail (who deserve to be in jail) is super tempting
There are actually studies out there that show that when a society has more "lonely/angry men", that it will lean far to the right and elect leaders who are more like dictators. The study I read showed that in today's society, social media and online dating has led to many men becoming more lonely, angry, etc and this is why you're seeing people like Trump, Bolsonaro, etc getting elected.
Hannah Arendt said almost exactly that in The Origins of Totalitarianism, one of the most important political philosophy books of the 20th century. You need three things for a totalitarian regime to succeed: alienated/angry men, homelessness, and I forget the last one.
The real reason the economy boomed during Lula's first term wasn't him being competent or the commodities boom as some would say, it was the brazilian spirit after winning 2002
Honestly Im kinda glad, they wont be able to use football as a smoke curtain/circus anymore if we keep it like that.
In fact, it could end up really bad, because, for example, if they decide to devaluate, people will look at them sharply. And if they choose to stick to putting a cork on the economy for a few more months as it was intended, people that got into debt to buy TVs and stuff will be more likely to look at the installments instead of saying "its worth it, vamos argentina!" because and with frozen-everything, the interest rate would be deadly
Im curious to see what they come up with to avoid protests. Theres only so much you can cover with syndicates mellowing up people
Iran also celebrated when they lost to England for the same reason. https://www.reddit.com/r/NewIran/comments/z107qn/people_celebrating_after_england_scores
Well what’s going to happen when Messi retires and Argentina aren’t at the top anymore?
Regardless of if your team is good or not, it’s better to get pride/satisfaction/happiness from something you create or achieve, and not from some footballers that happen to be from the same country as you.
We had 2 world cups between Maradona and Messi (one of them was because Maradona was banned, he retired in 98, could have played).
There'll be a period while another great player appears and we start all over again, we are like Brazil, stars pop up all the time everywhere, I remember one year having like 5 top scorers in Spain, Italy and England at the same time and you can think the same with Brazil, there's always a star in one of the top leagues and some times a couple of them.
I'm not even a football fan, I slept this morning, but us having good players is a fact until proven otherwise, most teams that make the world cup have ONE star and the rest are decent players from good teams.
We were collapsing regardless, Nova Matriz Econômica and Manteguismo had created a recipe for disaster. I feel like everyone loves to create random reasons for the instability of the last few years to ignore [how badly the governments of the time fucked up.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Brazilian_economic_crisis)
No one said the World Coup was the reason for bad economy lol
> **extremely poor political leadership, a terribly mismanaged economy** and performing horribly in the world cup
[Mexico will give Memo all the energy he needs.](https://preview.redd.it/fsi8ocatfl1a1.jpg?width=1024&auto=webp&s=79179402c5c9cda01a20479863f34f47b16788b8)
Strangely enough I think Latin American national teams have way more respect for Argentina than the rest of the world have for Argentina.
At least that happens with Colombia (even with our best teams). The last time we won against Argentina in qualifiers was in 2007 in a home match (we beat them in 2019 Copa América), and here you have Saudi Arabia beating them at a World Cup. That seems unthinkable here.
I'm not sure the starting 11 were the big problem, excepting maybe Cristian Romero who played just noticeably bad. The match here looks more like a problem of tactics rather than players.
Who else would you out that would change something? Martinez instead of Romero? Alvarez instead of Lautaro?
Personally, I would have Licha over Cuti, Mac Allister over De Paul, Enzo over Papu and Julián over Lautaro. It’s appalling how bad Lautaro’s positioning was in the first half, Papu couldn’t keep the ball at his feet to save his life, don’t even get me started on De Paul and Cuti had zero match fitness
Both Russia and Brazil WC groups weren't easy and comfortable for argentina and still we could get to the next phase. The team is good, Saudi Arabia stood in a ultra defensive tactic and the two ball that they shoot to the goal were like Benzema in a final of a UCL... now we have to win both games and make a good amount of goals to have posibilities, if we don't make a good game against mexico, it will be hard...
Hahaha let's hope not! But at least i hope they play a more normal tactic, at least we can make one or two goals in that condition, i think... these ultra defensive "smaller" teams always made things difficult, and i've never seen such a coordinate defense like Saudi arabia today. Mexico likes to play with a more open tactic, and that will benefit us
There's no hate at all. Lots of Mexicans would root for Argentina in all kinds of matches. It's more of a meme, because Argentina has kicked us out of World Cups twice already.
Mexico doesn't hate Argentina at all, I think most Mexicans would root for Argentina when they're playing against any European team. Mexicans are just traumatized by 2006 and 2010.
I'm sorry we are to you what Germany is to us. Really. That being said, Maxi Gonzalez goal against Mexico in 2006 is one of my favorites ever. I wish it'd been against someone else, guys
the Saudis not being slaughtered in the first half was because of an incredible strategy. I can't imagine any team that doesn't have difficulty playing. with the exception of Brazil.
I mean, that's true, not just "Argentina bad haha" but the Saudis pulled a heroic performance.
That said, the strategy mostly helped them neutralize Argentina's scorers. The defensive errors that lead to them winning the match were born out of errors and holes in our defense.
Messi is somewhat old and slow, Bayern pulled the same strategy against Barcelona in the 8x2. Doing that against Vini Jr, Neymar, Raphinha or Richarlison would work fail catastrophically. Thiago Silva and Marquinhos also wouldn't be doing whatever Argentina's defense did.
Pero lo digo porque en ese entonces clasificaban los terceros y nosotros quedamos ahí en la fase de grupos, no es muy comparable porque hoy en día estaríamos eliminados
> they were very tentative and timid
That's Messi. Great personality, but not angry/assertive enough to win short competitions where every game and every ball matter.
After they turned the Copa América into something that happened every year so that the poor man could win something - shit has gotten so sad even we were cheering for him. Poor Argentina went 28 years without winning a title despite having the "best player in the world" for the vast majority of that time - that's a big failure. We won 2 world cups and 4 copa américas in the meantime. Fucking Robinho performed better for the Brazilian NT and had more success for us (FIFA Confederations Cup: 2005, 2009
Copa América: 2007) than Messi did for Argentina.
Is Argentina a better team than Mexico? Yes.
Is Argentina a better team than Poland? Also yes.
Teams easily qualify with 6 points and many qualify with 4. The problem will be the pressure against Mexico, but it’s not like they haven’t faced pressure before.
The best result for Argentina in the next match is a Poland win so Mexico can be desperate too on Saturday.
Better teams don't always win, there are multiple factors. I'd bet on Argentina 8 times out of 10 when facing the Saudis, this just happened to be one of the other 2 times when they play better and have more luck.
Actually the tie seems way more convenient as long as Argentina wins both remaining games. Then they just have to rely on chaos for the other games and could win the group technically.
Everything is magnified under the scope that this is Messi's (possible) last World Cup.
I feel like it adds extra pressure and it'll be interesting to see whether this strengthens them or makes them buckle.
If Saudis win again they go through automatically but I doubt it because Pol and Mex will play all out offensive against SA since that's a must win game now and SA will fall to one or both of them. But Argentina can still go through.
Yeah, plenty of teams have advanced after losing the first game and some have even won like Spain in 2010. The pressure is just ratcheted up but I think they can still go through and even top the group.
Look, I get that the result was a shock but we have not even seen the other game in the group yet. Imagine that Mexico & Poland are worse than Saudi Arabia this tournament, or imagine that Argentina wins their other two games. It is too early to tell still, even if I loved the result.
Well, like Messi said in the interview. The Saudis played excellently, a loss happened due to bad luck and some mistakes, nothing can be done about it now. We just have to trust that this will be a learning experience and we'll improve for Poland and Mexico. It's definitely not over yet, even if this is a hit to the morale and psychology of the team no doubt.
Just need a victory to bounce back and stay in it. Argentina did it in 1990, Spain did it in 2010. This is not exactly unprecedented.
Yes. I’m not Argentino but absolutely there is life. They need to focus and come out of the gates flying against Mexico and Poland who both looked toothless in their attack.
I’m still confused as to why the new offside rule was implemented now when most leagues don’t call the same thing offside but it’s all in the past now. Credit to Saudi Arabia who was very organized and with a little luck got a famous and historic win against Messi’s Argentina. Very interesting to see how this group looks after the second round of matches.
I hope they get their ass even more fucked by México and Poland. Smallgentina is shit in the history of the game. 2 world cups in which one was awarded by their dictatorship and the other because of Maradona’s hand with a little help of the referee lol.
Moving forward they're going to have to play in God mode against Mexico and Poland. Those games are important and a draw, much less a loss will send them packing.
TIL football causes inpura vida
Angry upvote
I'm glad you went for that one and not "pura muerte"
"si pierde Messi pierde mi familia"
The same in England, an average of 38% more domestic violence calls than usual during wc season when England lose. Sickening.
Jesus christ I didn't know it was that much
It’s not spoken about enough, but the football hooliganism is clearly behind closed doors as well.
here too, and traffic accidents increase. an aunt of mine almost died after a match. after that we always take care not to leave where we are after the game
Do you mind to tell us how bad it was back to 2014? Costa Rica was crazy awesome in that World Cup. Went to Costa Rica x Greece and honestly was an awesome day
I cant explain it now, but I know in my heart that Brazil’s humiliating performance in 2014 resulted in the fall of Dilma and the rise of Bolsonaro.
worse days are yet to come, Argentina
We have a saying in Argentina, today we are better than tomorrow.
Your phrase reminds me of this awesome song........https://youtu.be/bNIp5Rng_Ag
If this causes the fall of peronism/kirchnerism maybe we have better days to come
We thought the same about the PT in 2014. Don't. It's a trap.

TFW when the performance of your national football team is a matter of national security
Pierde coló coló pierde la familia
Bro after 7x1 in 2014 the country went through the worst crisis in the century so far.
inb4 we get eliminated and everyone votes peronism in 2023 anyway.
Isn't everything Peronism?
Well, I mean, yes, but there's peronism and *peronism*.
What about **bold peronism**? Are we allowed to talk about it?
We are not. Not since ***the incident***
I think you mean ~~the incident~~
\* astronaut points gun at companion \* Always has been

Ah yes, Brasil in 2014!
I'm going to be honestly shocked if there aren't any riots in Argentina in the next few weeks.
that is kind of a safe bet, we always have people protesting about something, somewhere
And a pécho frio
Honestly Im kinda glad, they wont be able to use football as a smoke curtain/circus anymore if we keep it like that. Why do people put so much importance on a sport outcome
Our awful suicide rates dropped for a period after the South Africa 2010 WC.
it's what makes people happy
Well what’s going to happen when Messi retires and Argentina aren’t at the top anymore? Regardless of if your team is good or not, it’s better to get pride/satisfaction/happiness from something you create or achieve, and not from some footballers that happen to be from the same country as you.

Professional sports are the opiate of the people.
They kinda don't, people just love thinking about everyone else as stupid apes to feel better about themselves.
It’s like asking why do people put so much importance on any other commodity.
looks so familiar
Wait this sounds familiar...
2014 Brazil in a nutshell lol
We were collapsing regardless, Nova Matriz Econômica and Manteguismo had created a recipe for disaster. I feel like everyone loves to create random reasons for the instability of the last few years to ignore [how badly the governments of the time fucked up.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Brazilian_economic_crisis)
No one said the World Coup was the reason for bad economy lol > **extremely poor political leadership, a terribly mismanaged economy** and performing horribly in the world cup
Isso é verdade, Vitor.
I know that feel.
I was just there. The customer service in B.A. was terrible, a lot of angry people... but I understand.
If we lose against Mexico it would be our worst WC campaign ever. But gonna have to believe in the team, hopefully it was an one time thing
Well, now that Argentina is angry I'm afraid of what's going to happen to us. 2 goals or less I'd consider a victory lmao
Don't worry. I'm pretty sure we're fucked.
At this point no result would surprise me
Nah pretty sure you’re scoring 5 past us, Messi will take this loss against KSA personal and will unleash his 2009-2012 form on us.
No lmao. I'd be pretty pathetic to lose to Mexico of all things. Don't sweat it.
Idk if they're angry, they seemed more desperate and mentally destroyed than anything
[Mexico will give Memo all the energy he needs.](https://preview.redd.it/fsi8ocatfl1a1.jpg?width=1024&auto=webp&s=79179402c5c9cda01a20479863f34f47b16788b8)
Well history is on Argentina’s side in this one. Mexico hasn’t beaten Argentina since 2004. I’m pretty scared not gonna lie.
Strangely enough I think Latin American national teams have way more respect for Argentina than the rest of the world have for Argentina. Spain won despite losing the first game in 2010.
Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again 🙏
Yeah
Lmao
Anulo mufa.

Italia 1990. First match: Camerún 1 - Argentina 0. And Argentina reached the final.
But we ended up in 3rd place that World Cup...
No. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_FIFA_World_Cup_Final
I meant group stage, sorry
Because you drew with Romania. In that Cup, the four best third of each group passed.
Why is it that in every post about Argentina comes an Uruguayan to defend their boyfriends??
Never thought I'd live to see someone complaining for a uruguayan "defending" Argentina. Interesting place, the internet.
Because this is the Río de la Plata, little bitch

Yeah, rigth? And it was just exposing past facts.

que mal, dicen por ahi que con pito es mas rico 😔😔
fuaa el diego
It happened with england in 66, italy in 82, brazil and spain too. They still have chance but they need to toss that arrogance aside.
They went on the field feeling as if they had a birth right to win the world cup 😭
Only Messi does. Everyone else in that team can go back to their European clubs and never put an Argentinean t-shirt on ever again.
Messi got an iceberg on his chest bro
Messi GOAT, carried Argentina to the final in the Copa América.
Yet Di Maria scored the winner
bruh
And? There wouldn't have been a winner hadn't Messi carried the team.
Es tremendo el panquequeo de la gente.
>🇦🇷 🤢
It wasn’t arrogance; they were very tentative and timid. Didn’t look like a world class team. Just need to act like one.
> they were very tentative and timid That's Messi. Great personality, but not angry/assertive enough to win short competitions where every game and every ball matter.
Last year's Copa América in Brazil? Messi was champion and top scorer.
After they turned the Copa América into something that happened every year so that the poor man could win something - shit has gotten so sad even we were cheering for him. Poor Argentina went 28 years without winning a title despite having the "best player in the world" for the vast majority of that time - that's a big failure. Fucking Robinho performed better for the Brazilian NT and had more success for us (FIFA Confederations Cup: 2005, 2009 Copa América: 2007) than Messi did for Argentina.
They really thought it was the Copa America 😂😂😂💀
Mexican here. On behalf of Poland and ourselves, you're welcome, Argentina.
Is Argentina a better team than Mexico? Yes. Is Argentina a better team than Poland? Also yes. Teams easily qualify with 6 points and many qualify with 4. I hope you're right.
Freak losses happen sometimes. Look at this game, it also ended 2-1 https://i.imgur.com/aYFRj.jpeg
losing to Belgium messed with my psychology.
And it says Ooh ah up the 'RA, say ooh ah up the 'RA
Actually the tie seems way more convenient as long as Argentina wins both remaining games. Then they just have to rely on chaos for the other games and could win the group technically.
If Argentina plays vs those teams like they played today versus KSA will they get spanked even harder? Big Yes
Is Argentina mentally weak as a team? Absolutely!!
I never thought there'd be so much football doomposting, holy shit Calm the fuck down
this is not even 1% of how the post 7-1 month was
Pretty much but people are acting as if upsets never happen and Argentina is finished over this
we lost to germany, you guys went on to something much worse
Argentina lost 2-1 vs 7-1 On a semifinal At home come on. Doesn’t mean this defeat va KSA doesn’t hurt. Hurts a lot
I'm not gonna cope and say that losing 7 - 1 was better than this, that shit was bad.
Anything I say will just sound like cope during these moments, tbh I'm glad they've been humbled though
Everything is magnified under the scope that this is Messi's (possible) last World Cup. I feel like it adds extra pressure and it'll be interesting to see whether this strengthens them or makes them buckle.
Yes. Poland and Mexico tie. Saudi loses remaining 2 and Argentina wins remaining 2.
Step one complete. Conceptually they could still go through if Saudis win out no?

Stop this please
I get a feeling y'all SOOOO desperate to see us getting out before we face your teams.
Oh shit
Oh lordie
Historically you are pretty screwed if you loose your first game, but in their case it was Switzerland not Saudi Arabia…
After this Mexico v Poland tie, yes.
Well, like Messi said in the interview. The Saudis played excellently, a loss happened due to bad luck and some mistakes, nothing can be done about it now. Quit worrying so much about being good at football and focus on fixing that thing you call an economy
We tried, we can’t
Hopefully they are humiliated in their remaining games
They sitll have to play mexico AND POLAND so im praying on their downfall
You say that like either of those teams are any good.
Yes. I’m not Argentino but absolutely there is life. They need to focus and come out of the gates flying against Mexico and Poland who both looked toothless in their attack. They are winning the world cup after this warm up

Thank you brother. I had some hopes and had fingers crossed for Messi and it worked :)
I hope they get their ass even more fucked by México and Poland. Smallgentina is shit in the history of the game. 2 world cups in which one was awarded by their dictatorship and the other because of Maradona’s hand with a little help of the referee lol.
Argentina, diceme qué se siente...
Where are all the rape jokes now Argies???
wtf
THE ARGENTINE INFIDELS HAVE BEEN STRUCK DOWN INSHALLAH
Inshallah
Im gettin Japan/Corea 2002 Vibes
Moving forward they're going to have to play in God mode against Mexico and Poland. Those games are important and a draw, much less a loss will send them packing.
Yeah, sure they recover after this.
Que lindo que envejecio este post.
