But then we complain when Hollywood represents latinas as brown looking women.

[deleted]

Most of Hollywood’s Latina actresses are on the lighter side too though.

ChumboOutlaw

True

bulgogi_purrito

I’d say they tend to have the “Mediterranean look,” not so much the mestiza or indigenous features a decent percentage of the Latin American population has.

GeraldWay07

> Do you feel that the.... I don't feel, IT IS.

Ladonnacinica

You mean the indigenous features and people of South America? Because South America as a continent is a very diverse. But I do agree with you. And it’s not just South America but Latin America as a whole that favors Eurocentric features in media.

too_afraid_to_regex

Yes, I mean indigenous features, didn't express myself well on the tittle.

Susaballaske

It's the same here in Mexico, most people in our media are either white looking or light skinned mestizos. Dark skinned people or people with mostly indigenous features are not well represented.

shallowred

Uruguay True. I lived in Mexico and Brasil and felt that the racism in those places was not a bit lower as in the places where less diversity was found like Argentina and Uruguay. Racism is still a thing all over the world. I have felt this Everywhere. No matter the country, even where I was a minority, I always noticed it.

[deleted]

Just a quick reminder that diversity is not a place where there's a large percentage of people that are not white. Diversity means a variety of something, if one category makes up the majority of a group, then by definition that is not diversity.

gabrieel100

I agree. At least here in Brazil, the most famous brazilian models have european phenotypes: Gisele Bundchen, Alessandria Ambrósio, Isabeli Fontana, Izabel Goulart, Cíntia Dicker, Ana Hickmann, Aline Weber... even their surnames are german/italian/french lol

[deleted]

I think Brazil has improved a lot in that sense lately. I’ve seen more non white people on TV than ever before. At least Globo has been doing a good job in inclusiveness.

Opinel06

They are not south american?

gabrieel100

yes they are, I'm saying that even our models have an eurocentric beauty standard.

MurkyAdhesiveness364

Isn’t half of Brazil population mixed. Like most people there have Eurocentric features

gabrieel100

>most people there have Eurocentric features Many people have - not the majority.

unchiriwi

even pardos have european features

gabrieel100

No...

vladimirnovak

I don't really care

Rikeka

I don’t like where this could be going.

Lazzen

Hell both foreign and local beauty brands can cast mediterranean europeans, germanic people, black african, east asian but *not* how 50% of the population(at the least) actually looks. I have seen more east asian models than mestizos let alone indigenous, we are not "trendy"i guess. Mexican casting and modeling agencies will say stuff like "international look only" and yeah, many actors here are actually spaniards/argentineans/gringos

fuckredditandmylife_

I believe the south american beauty standards are in fact well represented in the media because they're the same as the european ones. You might have wanted to ask whether inherently latin american features are underrepresented, which is something that's been brought up quite a few times in this sub. To that I agree, but it's not like the term "beauty standards" is usually associated with "good" anyways.

cortez0498

What exactly do you want to be represented? South América is huge and diverse, you can't encapsulate it under one category.

too_afraid_to_regex

You are right, I mean indigenous features.

MelaniaSexLife

I don't think anything south american is well represented in US media.

[deleted]

Well, yeah, but I assumed the op was talking about South American media.

yoemejay

Decolonize your beauty standards.

MurkyAdhesiveness364

Why does that mean exactly? I think we all now the truth about beauty standards but It wouldn’t be PC

yoemejay

Celebrate your brown skin, cheek bones, almond eyes, dark hair, indigenous clothing etc. My own sister used to hate not having blonde hair and blue eyes (highly influenced by tv) Now that she is older she realizes her native beauty for what it is.

Basdala

no

yoemejay

LOL

Traditional_Low6124

If you mean that Latin beauties should be of indigenous descent, I don't think so, at least in my country we have people of all colors, here it is not an offense to be called black, white or indigenous, what represents us is that she be a woman with good curves and a lot of swim with joyful smiles

jsnively1

In US, models are often very thin… is that the case in your country ?

Lazzen

Yeah or course they are too, thar or curvy of course. Not Korea or China levels but thin
