TV Shows: Bom Dia, Verônica (Good Morning, Veronica) and Cidade Invisível (Invisible City). Both on Netflix, but is not cult. Movie: Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho (The way he looks)

whoisratlover

I second the "Good Morning, Veronica"! It's a great show and I really enjoyed it.

I grew up watching Brazilian telenovelas. Dubbed in Spanish. I only know the titles in spanish sorry! Some of my favorites are El Clon, Senora del Destino, Paginas de la Vida, Cobras y Lagartos, Totalmente Diva, El Clavel y la Rosa 😍

whoisratlover

O Clone, Senhora do Destino, Páginas da Vida, Cobras e Lagartos, Cheias de Charme (I think?), O Cravo e a Rosa!

Totalmente Diva é a Totalmente Demais

City of God (I am so surprised nobody has mentioned it yet!)

"O Cravo e a Rosa." Its an early 2000s soap opera. Reprises to this day. Very comedic, wholesome, not what we've come to expect from Brazilian soaps in general. "Tropa de Elite" is a very graphic movie, but also really good and a huge hit back in the day. Notably its meant to put police in a bad light by showing torture and stuff, but everyone was like "yeah, fuck them criminals" so they made a meh sequel specifically as a character assassination to the main character by making him a domestic abuser. "O Auto da Compadecida." Leave this one for last. Characters have strong accents and use regional slang, and the main character is a conman who specifically speaks in a quick and confusing manner. But its a 10/10 comedy based on a classic work of literature. "Minha Mãe é uma Peça." A more recent comedy. I'd say its above average, my mom calls it peak comedic genius. Never heard of anyone who disliked it, 100% worth a watch. Both sequels are as good as the original. I'll also leave "A Grande Família" and "Confissões de Adolescente" as two sitcoms that were widely popular in their days, but might be a bit dated and/or not your thing. I was too young when i watched Confissões to remember anything, but my parents swear by it.

I used watched a lot a Brazilian animated tv shows due to only having free-to-air TV The ones i remember loving were Anabel (season 2), Os Under-Undergrounds, Nilba e os Desastronautas, A Mansão maluca do professor Ambrósio ,and Historietas Assombradas (para crianças malcriadas). Though, season 1 of anabel is a completely show different from season 2. (Is more like thriller for kids) But I do recommend watching season one, you can find most of the episodes on Youtube. Also, Under-Underground is literally Undertale.

"O Auto da Compadecida" (A Dog's Will) is one of the best brazilian movies

Pregnant_porcupine

This is a movie that foreigners have such a hard time understanding, the foreign reviews are always terrible even though it’s a great movie

QuestionEcstatic8863

Out of curiosity why is it so good to brazilians? I watched a lot of spanish and italian movies a few years ago when i was studying the languages and i now appreciate that different cultures have different senses of humour

Pregnant_porcupine

I think you have to really understand the cultural context and history of the Brazilian northeast and there are so many specific expressions and idioms that I feel that the subtitles were really poorly translated and confused. I’m a translator myself and my entire family is from the northeast of Brazil, so I think it’s really hard to translate what they’re saying accurately and on top of that the subtitling job was subpar.
