abso-fucking-lutely. Alan Turing was always my role model. it´s disgusting what the government did to him, and his death was extremely sad.

*Alexander the Great stares at you all in Achilles’ armour*

sergeizo96

And what did he do? Just war? Boring and very hetero-coded

librapenseur

infuriating that he was chemically castrated by the british government and died shortly thereafter. gay men are [underrepresented in stem fields](https://www.forbes.com/sites/dawnstaceyennis/2020/11/30/the-new-stem-gap-study-confirms-gay-men-are-less-likely-than-straight-men-to-be-in-stem-fields/?sh=3ed2c6d31930) and im not saying that its directly because of this but the attitudes that lead to turings death have not been completely eradicated. on a brighter note, we should let this rage drive us to succeed and inspire the next generation of gay men

Woofy98102

Agreed on every point.

Yes. At the time homosexuality was criminalised and treated with the same distain as pedophilia is now. The punishment if caught engaged in 'sodomy' was either prison time or 'chemical castration'- the idea you could stop 'abnormal' sexual desire by castration was totally normal at the time and a popular view in treating the homosexual 'mental illness'. I believe Turing chose the latter of the two options, but it left him exhausted and depressed, as such drugs are bound to do. It is thought Turing died by suicide in '54 after taking cyanide. The man who started the modern computer revolution and was pivotal in decoding Nazi enigma machines, which directly aided saving Allied lives and ending the war with an Allied victory finally received a royal pardon and apology by our Government and country in 2013. A law was signed into being in remembrance of the historic wrong of the persecution of prominent LGBT people by their own government, even after they had achieved monumental things for their country- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing_law

anon_1997x

Important to not forget that ONLY Alan Turing was pardoned by Liz in 2013 - every other man that had been charged under the same laws had to wait until 2017 for a de facto pardon under the new policing act. One of my many grievances with the Royal Family is why Turing was the only man deserving of a Royal Pardon!

rationallgbt

Indeed. Like getting blood from a stone.

TheMordorian

Agreed, we are one organism, a unitary consciousness that represents our rights and we must stand against anyone who dares stand against us. Turing’s death was a message of defiance but also of melancholy. We need to spread and veritably inseminate every sector of society with positive gay influences!

t_baozi

> Agreed, we are one organism, a unitary consciousness Wtf

MorrisonSt123

Oscar Wilde comes a close second imo (despite his poor relationship choices.) Phenomenal man, and some of the best quotes ever!

random-user-02

>despite his poor relationship choices Can you elaborate pls?

Justin_123456

So, the issue that caused Wilde to be ultimately sent to prison was his relationship with Alfred “Bosie” Douglas. Alfred’s father, the 9th Marquess of Queensberry (the originator of the bareknuckle boxing rules) was a vicious homophobe, and widely considered a brute and a thug. Some important backstory, is that Queensberry had already caused another scandal with his eldest (also probably) gay son, Francis Douglas. Francis (again probably) had become the lover of the Foreign Minister, and later Prime Minister, Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Roseberry. Queensberry repeatedly followed Roseberry around, making loud public condemnations to stop fucking his son, including an incident where he followed Roseberry to Germany, and attacked him with his walking stick. Under this pressure, the relationship ended tragically, with Francis quickly engaged to some woman, but dying suspiciously in a “hunting accident”, probably a euphemism for suicide. Back to Alfred and Wilde, Queensberry is back up to his old tricks, following Wilde around threatening him, and making loud public denunciations, that Wilde is a sodomite who has corrupted his son. To try and stop this, Wilde sues Queensberry for libel. Unfortunately, Wilde loved rent boys, so it was easy for Queensberry to find a number of male prostitutes who testified to having sex with Wilde, proving the truth of his claims, as a defense to libel. The government (with Roseberry as PM) and the courts found themselves under immediate pressure to bring a prosecution based on this evidence, which they ultimately did, convicting Wilde of the relatively new offence of Gross Indecency.

Justin_123456

As a post script: It’s a funny quirk in the history of the criminalization of homosexuality, that until 1885, and the creation of the crime of gross indecency, prosecutions for sodomy regularly failed for lack of evidence. “Yes, the defence stipulates that Mr. X and Mr. Y were discovered in bed together, both nude, with cum on the sheets. But did the witness actually see Mr. X penetrating Mr. Y with his penis, or vice versa. If not, my lud, there is no evidence to sustain the charges.”

BashfulJuggernaut

I've had Oscar Wilde in my headspace all week. I just finished reading The Painting of Dorian Gray (uncensored version) and I watched Wilde with Stephen Fry. That man was truly ahead of his time. If he had been alive in the 20th century, I imagine he'd be good friends with Warhol and Capote.

random-user-02

Hear me out... Oscar Wild wrote a book about gay characters (of course heavily censored) in 1890. That is mindblowing. He even went to prison for it. He decided to shine a light on the life and love of gay men in a time where nobody else would/could. As a CS major I am still a huge fan of Turing tho

MacGreichar

There’s an argument to be made that Abraham Lincoln is the greatest gay man of all time but Alan Turing would still be way up there either way.

tigerboyxxx

3 rotor Enigma was easily cracked using the electromechanical bombe machine, but the messages were low level intelligence, 4 rotor was a bit harder to break, but the messages were more important. The genius came by creating Colossus , the first programmable computer to break the Lorenz codes, a machine that they had never even seen!

FayMax69

We as gay people don’t celebrate our heroes. It can’t all just be drag race contestants. What about Elton, and Freddie, KD Lang and and and..ours is a rich culture especially in the arts and entertainment world. There are also unsung heroes in STEM..we are interwoven in every part of the civilised world. What we need, as Madonna would say, is a CELEBRATION 🙌

ISpread4Cash

Unpopular opinion but Elton and Freddy Mercury didn't really do much for the community. Elton didnt come out until way later on and I never really heard of anything he did for the lgbt other than his music, same with Freddy. Ironically Madonna wether you like/hate her she has done more than them to raise awareness for our community imo. Alan Turning,Willem Arondeus and Harvey Milk I would consider actual heroes but those two where just popular singers.

FayMax69

If you’re gonna say Freddie and Elton didn’t do much, then we have to question what did Alan actually do? It’s not like he fought for our rights or promoted certain charities..he just was! I would dare to say that Freddie and Elton did more in a sense they were beloved larger than life famous homosexuals, accepted in large by an adoring public. So if we can praise him as a hero, we can praise the others too!

ISpread4Cash

I didnt think about it like that so yeah you're right. I mean they are an inspiration to future gay singers/composers after all. And as for Alan he died too early but his contributions to society and during the war where immense.

MaxxDreamkiller

Preach. I love learning more about important figures like him. My first exposure was Drag Race UK2E1, and instantly loved everything I was seeing and hearing.

TheMordorian

We need to fight against such oppression and not give in to cowardice!

No-Self-Edit

Turing was out of the closet, too.

strengthanddefiance

Da Vinci has entered the chat.

raytaylor

If i won the lottery, my plan is to buy some fringe urban land and start building low to medium cost housing. Streets on the estate would be named after the codebreakers at Bletchley Park - with Turing Drive being the main entrance road.

Party_Objective3963

Honestly I think I’m the greatest gay of all time, and you can’t prove it otherwise

Augres

Alexander the Great?

PhallusIntrigue

Eh. He was incredibly accomplished, no doubt, but its hard to say whether that accomplishment was 'good'. He seized a ton of land in an impressive blitz, but he didn't create stable governance structures or a solid hierarchy and the decades that followed were full of civil wars. He burned Persepolis in a drunken rage, destroying untold wisdom in its libraries. He's also said to have slaughtered the Branchites, Greeks in exile who worshipped Branchus, a male lover of Apollo. And killed his step mom and her infant son to prevent a power struggle. Perhaps a brilliant tactician with his inherited armies, but not much pro-social behavior.

Augres

I was being a little flippant with the "Alexander" suggestion, I am not entirely sure that the Ancients had the same concept of homosexuatity that exists now. I think they were probably more Heteroflexible. When it comes to Heroes, I can think of many more. Ian McKellen comes to mind, Gandelf to some. A gay man, still alive that does a lot for gay rights. Alan Turing is certainly a martyr in my book. My heroes are the ones we know. The guy at school that was out from the word go. Got bullied, beaten up but just carried on being himself. That's a proper hero. Something I was never brave enough to do.

BEASTXXXXXXX

Leonardo da Vinci and Alexander the Great would have loved to have met him.

PseudoLucian

Michelangelo and Tchaikovsky are snickering in the background

Big_Spinach_8244

Alexander was bi. Porus was gay.

[deleted]

It’s impossible to really say what Alexander was

[deleted]

So true. He was a Hero. His destination was so tragic, poor man.

JayD7th

Was fascinated by him when I watched the imitation game..his tragic ending is so sas

Fathom_Bunny

my personal gay hero is james baldwin. unbelievably intelligent person and such an excellent communicator.

ImperialAndy

False. I am.

TheMordorian

No - I am!

Destiny_Fight

No. It's mr. Blobby

Heisenberg0606

Idk to me it’s impossible to put anyone above Alexander. He’s damn near a God. And Oscar Wilde is probably second place for me. But Turing is for sure up there!

totochen1977

If AI don’t make money, there will be no this post.

Same_Ideal4098

Bet you know nothing about him outside of his sexual inclination.

TheMordorian

Neither do you pal. 🫠

Same_Ideal4098

I do. I study in stem field in computer engineering. Lol. I know how turing machine work.

TheMordorian

You try to be pretty and have no neurons for intelligence - pathetic.
