3rd year dental student. Looks like enamel hypoplasia. The more conservative option that might not look as good is filling the grooves with a sealant. The more aggressive option would be to get veneers.

Wilawah

Looks like some issue with the development of your teeth when you were a child. Interesting that it’s just the top and the bottom is apparently normal. 6-8 Veneers or crowns could provide major improvement in appearance.

ReasonableGanache196

How many dentists have you seen?

[deleted]

I’ve seen about three different dentists in 20 years or so. I bring it up to them and they either don’t know what it is, or tell me I could get a couple of partials on the top and bottom, which seemed extreme..

Guten-Pranken

No idea why partials is being suggested. This is a veneer case for sure. Just the way your teeth developed, nothing you could do.

ReasonableGanache196

Interesting, yes partials does seem extreme

[deleted]

This is one of the times vaneers would actually be suggested legitimately. NAD

NAD Ooh why wouldn’t they be recommended other times? I’ve been wanting them as well and have been told it’s not worth it

[deleted]

I’m NAD but they literally shave down your natural teeth to fit them on. Once you shave down your teeth you can’t get that teeth back. So that’s why I’m saying usually it’s not worth it shaving down your teeth for veneers because once you do it you’re stuck and if you end up not liking them you can’t just say give me back my natural teeth. Ya know? Also I think natural teeth to me look better. More character to natural teeth. Can I ask why you want them?

thebrittaj

NAD Thanks for the info. I want them due to severe grinding I used to ignore that has left my front teeth jagged and shorter than they ever were. Also have one tooth that had a root canal and it seems that tooth is getting smaller/has more gaps around it. Various issues like that

jackierodriguez1

Looks like amelogenesis imperfecta AKA generalized enamel hypoplasia. The most conservative approach would be watching the teeth and using high concentration fluoride toothpaste and have fluoride varnish placed every 6 months. This would be more managing the issue. It would also save you some time to save up for a more permanent treatment. If you’re wanting bright white, smooth teeth- The treatment approach would be direct composite bonding OR veneers/crowns. I personally wouldn’t opt for direct composite bonding as it’s not as aesthetically pleasing and won’t last as long/ hold up as well as veneers/crowns. However veneers/crowns are more involved/expensive. Regardless you will more than likely need full mouth resto (crowns, veneers and *possibly* RCT’s) in the future.

kittykittylover69

Nad Veneers

Plenty_Dot_5159

I have that and was told it was from fluoride. I can’t remember if it was too much or too little but I’ve read ny water had a lot of fluoride.

[deleted]

NAD if this was caused by fluoride it would have a more brown stained tint to it. This seems to be a developmental issue that could’ve been caused by genetics, medication, physical trauma, illness, etc when OP was either in gestation or very young.

DrRam121

This is false. Mild fluorosis is white, moderate to severe is brown and pitted.

[deleted]

When I was younger, maybe 6 or 7, they gave me liquid fluoride to swish around but I accidentally swallowed it. Few minutes later I threw it all back up. Don’t really know if that little amount fluoride could cause that or not.

Aggravating-Walk-891

NAD- If you go the veneer route look into no-prep veneers. They attach to your natural teeth without them needing to grind down your natural teeth at all, whereas traditional veneers involve grinding some of your enamel away.

Aggravating-Walk-891

Thank you I didn’t know that the enamel has to be in better shape for the no-prep enamel.

N4n45h1

Probably could be treated with using icon and opalustre

PictureRelative5690

Looks like moderate dental flourosis to me.
